Objective.Implanted neural microelectrodes are an important tool for recording from and stimulating the cerebral cortex. The performance of chronically implanted devices, however, is often hindered by the development of a reactive tissue response. Previous computational models have investigated brain strain from micromotions of neural electrodes after they have been inserted, to investigate design parameters that might minimize triggers to the reactive tissue response. However, these models ignore tissue damage created during device insertion, an important contributing factor to the severity of inflammation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of electrode geometry, insertion speed, and surface friction on brain tissue strain during insertion.Approach. Using a coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian approach, we developed a 3D finite element model (FEM) that simulates the dynamic insertion of a neural microelectrode in brain tissue. Geometry was varied to investigate tip bluntness, cross-sectional shape, and shank thickness. Insertion velocities were varied from 1 to 8 m s-1. Friction was varied from frictionless to 0.4. Tissue strain and potential microvasculature hemorrhage radius were evaluated for brain regions along the electrode shank and near its tip.Main results. Sharper tips resulted in higher mean max principal strains near the tip except for the bluntest tip on the square cross-section electrode, which exhibited high compressive strain values due to stress concentrations at the corners. The potential vascular damage radius around the electrode was primarily a function of the shank diameter, with smaller shank diameters resulting in smaller distributions of radial strain around the electrode. However, the square shank interaction with the tip taper length caused unique strain distributions that increased the damage radius in some cases. Faster insertion velocities created more strain near the tip but less strain along the shank. Increased friction between the brain and electrode created more strain near the electrode tip and along the shank, but frictionless interactions resulted in increased tearing of brain tissue near the tip.Significance. These results demonstrate the first dynamic FEM study of neural electrode insertion, identifying design factors that can reduce tissue strain and potentially mitigate initial reactive tissue responses due to traumatic microelectrode array insertion.

Objective.Electrodes chronically implanted in the brain undergo complex changes over time that can lower the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of recorded signals and reduce the amount of energy delivered to the tissue during therapeutic stimulation, both of which are relevant for the development of robust, closed-loop control systems. Several factors have been identified that link changes in the electrode-tissue interface (ETI) to increased impedance and degraded performance in micro- and macro-electrodes. Previous studies have demonstrated that brief pulses applied every few days can restore SNR to near baseline levels during microelectrode recordings in rodents, a process referred to as electrical rejuvenation. However, electrical rejuvenation has not been tested in clinically relevant macroelectrode designs in large animal models, which could serve as preliminary data for translation of this technique. Here, several variations of this approach were tested to characterize parameters for optimization.Approach. Alternating-current (AC) and direct-current (DC) electrical rejuvenation methods were explored in three electrode types, chronically implanted in two adult male nonhuman primates (NHP) (Macaca mulatta), which included epidural electrocorticography (ECoG) electrodes and penetrating deep-brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was performed before and after each rejuvenation paradigm as a gold standard measure of impedance, as well as at subsequent intervals to longitudinally track the evolution of the ETI. Stochastic error modeling was performed to assess the standard deviation of the impedance data, and consistency with the Kramers-Kronig relations was assessed to evaluate the stationarity of EIS measurement.Main results. AC and DC rejuvenation were found to quickly reduce impedance and minimize the tissue component of the ETI on all three electrode types, with DC and low-frequency AC producing the largest impedance drops and reduction of the tissue component in Nyquist plots. The effects of a single rejuvenation session were found to last from several days to over 1 week, and all rejuvenation pulses induced no observable changes to the animals' behavior.Significance. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of electrical rejuvenation for diminishing the impact of chronic ETI changes in NHP with clinically relevant macroelectrode designs.

BACKGROUND: Parents may seek out health information online when their adolescent has nonspecific back pain to better understand treatment options. Such information directed towards consumers has not been previously analysed. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional content analysis was performed to describe the treatments recommended on consumer websites for nonspecific back pain in adolescents. The credibility and readability of the websites were also assessed. Systematic Google searches were completed in five countries, and relevant content from eligible web pages was analysed. An a priori codebook with 34 treatment-related codes was developed. Nine additional codes were inductively created during analysis. Credibility was assessed using the JAMA benchmark. Readability was assessed via the Flesch Kincaid Grade Level. RESULTS: Of 245 web pages, 48 were deemed eligible and analysed. Of 43 treatment codes, 37 were present in at least one web page. The five most frequently identified codes were See the doctor/get a diagnosis (found on 85% of web pages), Ergonomics/posture/biomechanics (52%), Reassurance (48%), Physiotherapy (48%) and Non-prescription pharmaceuticals/supplements (46%). Only 21% of the web pages met all four JAMA benchmark criteria, and 15% cited at least one recent or high-quality source. The median Flesch Kincaid Grade Level score was 9.0 (range 3.5-12.9). CONCLUSIONS: Parents of adolescents with nonspecific back pain may find that treatment recommendations published online are numerous and varied, with visits to the doctor encouraged. The credibility scores of these web pages are generally low, while the median reading level may be too high for the general population. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: This analysis reveals that public-facing websites with recommendations for treating adolescent nonspecific back pain do not cite the most recent, high-quality research. Although web pages correctly encourage physical activity and exercise over surgery and prescription medications, they do not reflect the psychologically informed or interdisciplinary care emphasized in recently published treatment recommendations. Clinicians must be aware that caregivers of their adolescent patients with nonspecific back pain may be exposed to online messages that encourage them to keep seeking a diagnosis.

This observational study aimed to explore the association of farmer-driven selective dry cow therapy (DCT), milking routine and dry cow management practices with SCC in early-lactation cows from 21 commercial dairy herds. Milking routine practices evaluated referred to cow preparation for milking, in-lactation mastitis management, and recording. Dry cow management practices related to dry cow environment and cleaning, dry-off procedure, milk cessation strategy and calving environment. Data from 2,016 multiparous cows in 21 commercial spring-calving grazing dairy herds were available for the study. Herd owners self-reported DCT (the assignment and administration of DCT was at the discretion of the herd owners with no involvement from the research team), management practices during milking and the dry period. Cow-level last test-day SCC records in 2020 (range = 105-285 DIM) and first test-day records in 2021 (range = 5-60 DIM) were obtained from milk recording databases. Quarter-level milk sampling was carried out on all cows in late lactation of 2020 (range = 240-261 DIM) for bacterial culturing. Bacteriological results were used to define cows with IMI when ≥1 quarter sample resulted in bacterial growth and there were no contaminated samples from that cow. Mixed model analyses were used to evaluate the association of selective DCT, milking routine, and dry cow management practices with cows' first test-day log 10 SCC (logSCC) in 2021. At dry-off in 2020, 47.6% of the cows were administered an internal teat sealant alone (ITS), while 52.4% were administered an antibiotic plus an internal teat sealant (AB+ITS). The mean herd-level percentage of cows with IMI was 19.7% (range = 9.8%-39.5%); Staphylococcus aureus accounted for the majority of cow-level IMI (89.9%, 357/397). Between herds, the proportion of cows administered ITS ranged from 17.7% (14/79; in a herd with an IMI prevalence of 10.1%) to 86.8% (66/76; in a herd with an IMI prevalence of 27.6%). In total, 11.8% (105/889) and 29.8% (292/980) of cows that were administered ITS or AB+ITS had an IMI in late lactation 2020, respectively. The mean untransformed SCC at the last test day in 2020 of cows administered ITS and AB+ITS was 55,000 and 197,200 cells/mL, respectively. The statistical analysis showed a significant interaction between selective DCT and milk yield at last test-day in 2020; cows with a milk yield of 15 kg and administered ITS had a 0.1 higher (untransformed SCC of 19,000 cells/mL higher) first test-day logSCC compared with cows administered AB+ITS. Additionally, greater parity, IMI in late lactation, higher logSCC at the last test-day in 2020 and longer dry periods were associated with higher logSCC at the first test-day in 2021. The current study identified cow- and herd-level management practices that could aid dairy farmers in improving the outcome of selective DCT and decrease early lactation SCC.

AIMS: Low back pain (LBP) is a common health problem in pre-professional dancers which could hamper the dancers' professional career. However, pre-professional dancers are not often studied, although they may have their own pain perceptions and coping strategies towards LBP. Considering the biopsychosocial nature of LBP, it is important to increase the understanding of these perceptions and coping strategies. The aim of this qualitative research study was to explore the dancers' perceptions about LBP and their coping strategies when they suffered from LBP. METHODS: Eighteen pre-professional dancers with and without LBP from different dance schools in Belgium were included in this study. Participants were invited for an in-depth online video interview. These in-depth interviews were based on a topic list. Afterwards, the interview transcripts were analyzed thematically. RESULTS: Two primary themes emerged from the data: 1) perceptions of LBP and 2) coping strategies which dancers applied when they suffered from LBP. The perceptions about LBP were related to two different themes: "it's all about the body" and "it's all about the psychosocial and contextual factors." In addition, the coping strategies were divided into "active coping strategies" and "passive coping strategies," whereas the most popular coping strategies were stretching exercises and passive coping strategies such as massages or heating cream. CONCLUSION: Although LBP has clearly been shown to be a biopsychosocial phenomenon, this qualitative study showed that dancers mainly considered biomedical factors as contributing factors to LBP. Additionally, instead of relying on coping strategies aimed at directly improving pain or trying to treat LBP on the basis of a single-cause diagnosis, it is important to consider the biopsychosocial origin of LBP in the management plans.

Use of selective dry cow antimicrobial therapy requires to precisely differentiate cows with an intramammary infection (IMI) from uninfected cows close to drying-off to enable treatment allocation. Milk somatic cell count (SCC) is an indicator of an inflammatory response in the mammary gland and is usually associated with IMI. However, SCC can also be influenced by cow-level variables such as milk yield, lactation number and stage of lactation. In recent years, predictive algorithms have been developed to differentiate cows with IMI from cows without IMI based on SCC data. The objective of this observational study was to explore the association between SCC and subclinical IMI, taking cognizance of cow-level predictors on Irish seasonal spring calving, pasture-based systems. Additionally, the optimal test-day SCC cut-point (maximized sensitivity and specificity) for IMI diagnosis was determined. A total of 2,074 cows, across 21 spring calving dairy herds with an average monthly milk weighted bulk tank SCC of ≤200,000 cells/mL were enrolled in the study. Quarter-level milk sampling was carried out on all cows in late lactation (interquartile range = 240-261 d in milk) for bacteriological culturing. Bacteriological results were used to define cows with IMI, when ≥1 quarter sample resulted in bacterial growth. Cow-level test-day SCC records were provided by the herd owners. The ability of the average, maximum and last test-day SCC to predict infection were compared using receiver operator curves. Predictive logistic regression models tested included parity (primiparous or multiparous), yield at last test-day and a standardized count of high SCC test-days. In total, 18.7% of cows were classified as having an IMI, with first parity cows having a higher proportion of IMI (29.3%) compared with multiparous cows (16.1%). Staphylococcus aureus accounted for the majority of these infections. The last test-day SCC was the best predictor of infection with the highest area under the curve. The inclusions of parity, yield at last test-day, and a standardized count of high SCC test-days as predictors did not significantly improve the ability of last test-day SCC to predict IMI. The cut-point for last test-day SCC which maximized sensitivity and specificity was 64,975 cells/mL. This study indicates that in Irish seasonal pasture-based dairy herds, with low bulk tank SCC control programs, the last test-day SCC (interquartile range days in milk = 221-240) is the best predictor of IMI in late lactation.

Maintaining the electric fields necessary for the current generation of noble liquid time projection chambers (TPCs), with drift lengths exceeding 1 m, requires a large negative voltage applied to their cathode. Delivering such high voltage is associated with an elevated risk of electrostatic discharge and electroluminescence, which would be detrimental to the performance of the experiment. The Xenon Breakdown Apparatus (XeBrA) is a 5-l, high voltage test chamber built to investigate the contributing factors to electrical breakdown in noble liquids. In this work, we present the main findings after conducting scans over stressed electrode areas, surface finish, pressure, and high voltage ramp speed in the medium of liquid xenon. Area scaling and surface finish were observed to be the dominant factors affecting breakdown, whereas no significant changes were observed with varying pressure or ramp speed. A general rise in both the anode current and photon rate was observed in the last 30 s, leading up to a breakdown, with a marked increase in the last couple of seconds. In addition, the position of breakdowns was reconstructed with a system of high-speed cameras and a moderate correlation with the Fowler-Nordheim field emission model was found. Tentative evidence for bubble nucleation being the originating mechanism of breakdown in the liquid was also observed. We deem the results presented in this work to be of particular interest for the design of future, large TPCs, and practical recommendations are provided.

BACKGROUND: BreastCheck is Ireland's breast screening service which offers biennial mammograms to women aged 50-69. Practicing regular breast self-examination (BSE) enhances women's awareness and increases their perception of their susceptibility to the risk of breast cancer, possibly increasing their likelihood of attending a screening programme which reduces breast cancer mortality. Research is needed to identify the promotors and barriers to both attending breast cancer screening and practicing BSE. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the promotors and barriers associated with attending breast cancer screening and practicing BSE in Irish women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from the participants of TILDA wave 3 (2014-2015) was used, the participant population included females only (≥50 years old), a total of 3575 women. Bivariate analysis was used to identify variables that were significantly associated with having had a mammogram since the last interview (wave 2) or regularly checking their breasts for lumps (BSE). Regression analysis was then used to determine the effect the significant variables had on predicting the likelihood of participants attending breast screening or practicing BSE. RESULTS: Over half (55%) of all women over the age of 50 had a mammogram since wave 2 was completed (2012) and two thirds reported practicing regular BSE. The factors associated with having attended for breast cancer screening were: having private health insurance (OR = 1.86, 95%CI = 1.45-2.380), and practicing BSE (OR = 1.683, 95%CI = 1.344-2.107). The factors found to be associated with practicing regular BSE were: higher quality of life (OR = 1.035, 95%CI = 1.015-1.057), higher BMI (OR = 1.118, 95%CI = 1.020-1.226), being married (OR = 1.436, 95%CI = 1.190-1.732) and attending mammogram screening (OR = 1.691, 95%CI = 1.353-2.114). CONCLUSION: Regular participation in mammography screening reduces breast cancer mortality. Women eligible for BreastCheck were significantly more likely to attend screening. BSE is associated with increased attendance at screening. Health-care professionals should encourage BSE in order to increase screening uptake.

BACKGROUND: Positive expiratory pressure (PEP) devices are an important element of the management of cystic fibrosis, and of other respiratory diseases. Whereas there have been reports in the literature of contamination of airway clearance devices and their surfaces by microbial pathogens, there is little evidence available regarding such contamination and its contribution to respiratory infection. AIM: To establish whether pathogenic bacteria can contaminate PEP devices in the context of normal cleaning and maintenance practices. METHODS: Patients' home-use clearance devices were brought to a routine clinic appointment and collected for microbiology sampling and analysis. The patients were provided with replacement devices. Nineteen such devices were collected from 17 patients, reflecting use of multiple devices by some patients. Swabs were taken and cultured from each patient's used device, the patient's airway, as well as from new unopened and unused devices that acted as controls. RESULTS: Seven of 19 devices (37%) tested positive for presence of pathogenic bacteria. Device-cleaning methods varied among patients and non-sterilization methods were found to be ineffective at removing pathogens. Microbial species found on the devices did not correlate with those identified from airway swabs. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the presence of pathogens on positive expiratory pressure devices. The potential for transmission of these pathogens to the patient's airway and the risk of infection remains unclear and requires further study.

This study is an analysis of the 100 most cited articles in mitral valve surgery. A bibliometric analysis is a tool to evaluate research performance in a given field. It uses the number of times a publication is cited by others as a proxy marker of its impact. The most cited paper Carpentier et al. discusses mitral valve repair in terms of restoring the geometry of the entire valve rather than simply narrowing the annulus (Carpentier, J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg 86:23-37, 1983). The first successful mitral valve repair was performed by Elliot Cutler at Brigham and Women's Hospital in 1923 (Cohn et al., Ann Cardiothorac Surg 4:315, 2015). More recently percutaneous and minimally invasive techniques that were originally designed as an option for high risk patients are being trialled in other patient groups (Hajar, Heart Views 19:160-3, 2018). Comparison of percutaneous method with open repair represents an expanding area of research (Hajar, Heart Views 19:160-3, 2018). This study will analyse the top 100 cited papers relevant to mitral valve surgery, identifying the most influential papers that guide current management, the institutions that produce them and the authors involved.

Aim To report a case of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy secondary to a verbal altercation in an employee who presented with chest pain. Methods The clinical history was obtained from the patient's occupational health record and correspondence from her treating cardiologist. Results The patient was diagnosed with Takotsubo cardiomyopathy following investigations for chest pain. Her echocardiogram was diagnostic. She was treated with beta blockers and advised to have complete rest; she remained out of work for six months. Conclusion There are few published cases of work related Takotsubo cardiomyopathy; it poses a challenge to physicians to be cognisant of this condition in a case of chest pain following emotional turmoil.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between subjective health complaints, sleep quantity and new injury within an endurance sport population. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: Ninety-five endurance sporting participants were recruited from running, triathlon, swimming, cycling and rowing disciplines. Over 52-week period participants submitted weekly data regarding subjective health complaints (SHCs) (cardiorespiratory, gastrointestinal and psychological/lifestyle), sleep quantity, training load and new injury episodes. Applying a 7- and 14-day lag period, a shared frailty model was used to explore new injury risk associations with total SHCs and sleep quantity. RESULTS: 92.6% of 95 participants completed all 52 weeks of data submission and the remainder of the participants completed ≥30 weeks. Seven-day lag psychological/lifestyle SHCs were significantly associated with new injury risk (Hazard ratio (HR)=1.32; CI 95%=1.01-1.72, p<0.04). In contrast, cardiorespiratory (HR=1.15; CI 95%=0.99-1.36, p=0.07) and gastrointestinal (HR=0.77; CI 95%=0.56-1.05, p=0.09) SHCs were not significantly associated with new injury risk. New injury risk had a significant increased association with 14-day lag <7h/day sleep quantity (HR=1.51; CI 95%=2.02-1.13, p<0.01) and a significant decreased association with >7h/day sleep quantity (HR=0.63, CI 95%=0.45-0.87, p<0.01. A secondary regression analysis demonstrated no significant association with total SHCs and training load factors (Relative Risk (RR)=0.08, CI 95%=0.04-0.21, p=0.20). CONCLUSIONS: To minimise an increased risk of new injuries within an endurance sporting population, this study demonstrates that psychological/lifestyle subjective health complaints and sleep quantity should be considered. The study also highlights a lag period between low sleep quantity and its subsequent impact on new injury risk. No association was demonstrated between subjective health complaints, sleep quantity and training load factors.

The objective of the current study was to examine phenotypic fertility performance and survival, and to gain insight into underlying factors that may contribute to greater fertility performance in 2 divergent genetic groups (GG) of Holstein-Friesian, selected using the Irish Economic Breeding Index (EBI). The GG were evaluated across 3 spring calving pasture-based feeding treatments (FT) over 4 yr. The 2 divergent GG were (1) high EBI; representative of the top 5% nationally (elite), and (2) EBI representative of the national average (NA). In each year, 90 elite and 45 NA cows were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 FT: control, lower grass allowance, and high concentrate. No interaction between GG and FT was observed for any of the measures of fertility investigated. The elite cows achieved significantly greater pregnancy rate to first service (+14.9 percentage points), and significantly greater pregnancy rates after 21, 42, and 84 d of breeding (+17.3, +15.2, and +9.6 percentage points, respectively) compared with NA. The number of services per cow was fewer for elite (1.57) compared with NA (1.80). The interval from mating start date to pregnancy was significantly shorter for elite cows compared with NA. The elite cows maintained greater mean body condition score than NA throughout the study (2.91 vs. 2.72), and had greater body condition score at calving, artificial insemination, and drying off compared with NA. The elite cows had greater mean circulating concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-1 compared with NA. No significant effect was observed of GG on commencement of luteal activity, or progesterone profile variables. Greater survival to the start of fifth lactation was observed for elite cows. The elite cows were 43% less likely to be culled than NA by the beginning of the fifth lactation. The results highlight the success of the Economic Breeding Index to deliver reproductive performance and longevity consistent with industry targets across a range of seasonal pasture-based FT. The results also clearly demonstrate the potential of appropriate genetic selection to reverse negative fertility trends incurred during previous decades of selection for milk production alone.

Aims To examine; (a) the number of registered dietitians (RDs) with blended tube fed (BTF) patients, work setting and caseload; (b) attitudes and experiences towards BTF; (c) current BTF supports and future resources required. Methods An online survey collected information from Irish RDs over one month. Data was examined using cross-tabulations and Mann-Whitney U tests. Free-text was categorized into thematic domains. Results A significant number of RDs with HEN paediatric patients concurrently managed BTF patients (n = 27/48, 56.3%, p<0.05). The majority were based in tertiary hospitals (HEN; n = 20/48, 41.7%, BTF; n = 12/27, 44.4%). Equal numbers were willing to support BTF or on a patient-case basis (n = 36/77, 46.8%). International guidelines were most used to inform RDs (n = 40/69, 58.0%). Professional training workshops were the preferred learning method (n = 60/73, 82.2%). Conclusion Overall, BTF appears to be a growing practice. Community services, professional guidelines, training and information are needed.

The objective of the current study was to explore differences in dry matter intake, intake capacity, production efficiency, energy balance, and grazing behavior, of 2 divergent genetic groups (GG) of lactating Holstein-Friesian, selected using the Irish Economic Breeding Index (EBI). The GG were evaluated across 3 spring calving pasture-based feeding treatments (FT) over 3 yr. The 2 divergent GG were (1) high EBI, representative of the top 5% nationally (elite), and (2) EBI representative of the national average (NA). In each year 90 elite and 45 NA cows were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 FT: control, lower grass allowance, and high concentrate. Although FT did affect animal performance, there were few notable incidences of GG × FT interaction. The elite cows expressed lower daily milk yield (-1 kg) compared with NA. Elite cows did, however, express higher daily concentrations of milk fat (+3.7 g/kg) and protein (+2.1 g/kg) compared with NA. Daily yield of milk solids and net energy of lactation (NEL) was similar for both GG. Body weight (BW) was greater for NA (+13 kg) compared with elite, whereas mean body condition score was greater (+0.14) for elite compared with NA. Intake did not differ significantly between GG. Intake capacity, expressed as total dry matter intake/100 kg of BW, was greater with elite compared with NA. Production efficiency expressed as yield of milk solids per 100 kg of BW was greater with elite compared with NA, although milk solids/total dry matter intake did not differ between GG. Expressed as NEL as a proportion of net energy intake minus net energy of maintenance (NEL/NEI - NEM) and NEI/milk solids kg, indicated a slight reduction in the utilization of ingested energy for milk production with elite compared with NA. This is, however, suggested as favorable as it manifested as a more positive energy balance with elite compared with NA and so is likely to enhance robustness, increase longevity, and increase overall lifetime efficiency. Noteworthy was a consistent numerical trend toward more intense grazing activity with elite compared with NA cows, exhibited in the numerically greater grazing time (+19 min) and total number of bites per day (+2,591).

Current techniques for measuring the dry matter intake (DMI) of grazing lactating beef cows are invasive, time consuming and expensive making them impractical for use on commercial farms. This study was undertaken to explore the potential to develop and validate a model to predict DMI of grazing lactating beef cows, which could be applied in a commercial farm setting, using non-invasive animal measurements. The calibration dataset used to develop the model was comprised of 94 measurements recorded on 106 beef or beef-dairy crossbred cows (maternal origin). The potential of body measurements, linear type scoring, grazing behaviour and thermal imaging to predict DMI in combination with known biologically plausible adjustment variables and energy sinks was investigated. Multivariable regression models were constructed for each independent variable using SAS PROC REG and contained milk yield, BW, parity, calving day and maternal origin (dairy or beef). Of the 94 variables tested, 32 showed an association with DMI (P < 0.25) upon multivariable analysis. These variables were incorporated into a backwards linear regression model using SAS PROC REG. Variables were retained in this model if P < 0.05. Five variables; width at pins, full body depth, ruminating mastications, central ligament and rump width score, were retained in the model in addition to milk yield, BW, parity, calving day and maternal origin. The inclusion of these variables in the model increased the predictability of DMI by 0.23 (R2 = 0.68) when compared to a model containing milk yield, BW, parity, calving day and maternal origin only. This model was applied to data recorded on an independent dataset; a herd of 60 lactating beef cows two years after the calibration study. The R2 for the validation was 0.59. Estimates of DMI are required for measuring feed efficiency. While acknowledging challenges in applicability, the findings suggest a model such as that developed in this study may be used as a tool to more easily and less invasively estimate DMI on large populations of commercial beef cows, and therefore measure feed efficiency.

This research sought to establish the impact of a 10-week program combining mixed martial arts (MMA) and one-to-one psychotherapy on young males' mental health and determine factors that predict help-seeking behavior in at-risk males. Preparticipation and post-participation interviews were employed as the method of data collection. Seven males (20-35 years; M = 24.57) completed preparticipation interviews and five completed follow-up interviews. Thematic analysis of preparticipation revealed that help-seeking behavior in at-risk males is impeded by the presence of male gender stereotypes, the absence of positive role models, as well as difficulty navigating challenging social landscapes. Post-participation interviews revealed that the sport provided structure and fitness for at-risk males, while the counseling was pivotal for personal growth. Improved relationships, work life, and self-esteem were also observed. The sporting element of the program helped to reduce stigma associated with engaging in psychotherapy, and positive male relationships were noted as particularly impactful. Findings support previous research indicating that combining sports and psychotherapy positively impacts young males' mental health. Sport provides an acceptable doorway to psychotherapy, providing space to explore personal issues.

The objective of this study was to validate the effect of genetic improvement using the Irish genetic merit index, the Economic Breeding Index (EBI), on total lactation performance and lactation profiles for milk yield, milk solids yield (fat plus protein; kg), and milk fat, protein, and lactose content within 3 pasture-based feeding treatments (FT) and to investigate whether an interaction exists between genetic group (GG) of Holstein-Friesian and pasture-based FT. The 2 GG were (1) extremely high EBI representative of the top 5% nationally (referred to as the elite group) and (2) representative of the national average EBI (referred to as the NA group). Cows from each GG were randomly allocated each year to 1 of 3 pasture-based FT: control, lower grass allowance, and high concentrate. The effects of GG, FT, year, parity, and the interaction between GG and FT adjusted for calving day of year on milk and milk solids (fat plus protein; kg) production across lactation were studied using mixed models. Cow was nested within GG to account for repeated cow records across years. The overall and stage of lactation-specific responses to concentrate supplementation (high concentrate vs. control) and reduced pasture allowance (lower grass allowance vs. control) were tested. Profiles of daily milk yield, milk solids yield, and milk fat, protein, and lactose content for each week of lactation for the elite and NA groups within each FT and for each parity group within the elite and NA groups were generated. Phenotypic performance was regressed against individual cow genetic potential based on predicted transmitting ability. The NA cows produced the highest milk yield. Milk fat and protein content was higher for the elite group and consequently yield of solids-corrected milk was similar, whereas yield of milk solids tended to be higher for the elite group compared with the NA group. Milk lactose content did not differ between GG. Responses to concentrate supplementation or reduced pasture allowance did not differ between GG. Milk production profiles illustrated that elite cows maintained higher production but with lower persistency than NA cows. Regression of phenotypic performance against predicted transmitting ability illustrated that performance was broadly in line with expectation. The results illustrate that the superiority of high-EBI cattle is consistent across diverse pasture-based FT. The results also highlight the success of the EBI to deliver production performance in line with the national breeding objective: lower milk volume with higher fat and protein content.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the associations between training load, baseline characteristics (e.g. age or previous injury) and rate of musculoskeletal injury and/or pain specifically within an Endurance Sporting Population (ESP). DESIGN: Prospectively registered systematic review. METHODS: Eight electronic databases were searched by two independent reviewers. Studies were required to prospectively monitor both (i) training loads and (ii) musculoskeletal injury and/or pain for >3 months. Methodological quality and risk of bias were determined utilising the Critical Skills Appraisal Program (CASP). Reported effect sizes were categorised as small, medium or large. RESULTS: Twelve endurance sport studies were eligible (running, triathlon, rowing). Increased injury and/or pain risk was associated with: (i) high total training distances per week/month (medium effect size) (ii) training frequency <2 sessions/week (medium effect size) and (iii) both low weekly (<2hours/week) and high monthly (large effect size) training durations. None of the studies reported internal training load data or acute:chronic workload ratios. Baseline characteristics found to increase the rate of injury and/or pain included: (i) a history of previous injury (medium effect size), (ii) age >45 years (small effect size), (iii) non-musculoskeletal comorbidities (large effect size), (iv) using older running shoes (small effect size) and (v) non-competitive behaviour. CONCLUSIONS: This review identifies a range of external training load factors and baseline characteristics associated with an increased rate of injury and/or pain within ESPs. There is an absence of research relating to internal training loads and acute:chronic workload ratios in relation to rate of injury and/or pain within ESPs.
