RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Endometrial polyps (EPs) are one of the most common pathologies detected during the examination of the uterine cavity of infertile women. We aimed to demonstrate the relationship between EPs, chronic endometritis (CE) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was performed on 394 hysteroscopically examined infertility cases. We performed polyp resections (PR) and extensive biopsies of the endometrium to demonstrate the association with clinical pregnancy (CP) by IVF. We performed statistical analysis to compare these associations. RESULTS: The incidence of CE was twice as high in the presence of EPs as in the absence of EPs. The associations between EPs and PR were found to be significant for positive CP outcomes. A significant difference in IVF outcome was found between the group with EPs and the group without EPs. All these associations were statistically significant (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: We found a frequent association between EPs and CE. The pregnancy rate obtained after IVF was negatively affected by the presence of EPs. Treatment of these pathologies improved IVF outcomes.

RESUMO

Meconium peritonitis is a rare prenatal disease with an increased rate of morbidity and mortality in the neonatal period. Distinctive features revealed by prenatal and postnatal ultrasoundmay be present: abdominal calcifications, ascites, polyhydramnios, meconium pseudocyst, echogenic mass and dilated bowel or intestinal obstruction. Establishing clear postnatal treatment and prognosis is difficult because of the heterogeneity of the results obtained by ultrasound. The aim of the study is to determine how prenatal diagnosis of meconium peritonitis is associated with perinatal management and further evolution. Clinical results are different depending on the presence of antenatal diagnosis of meconium peritonitis and its form, which can be mild or severe. Surgical treatment and management of meconium peritonitis depend on the clinical presentation of the newborn. Meconium peritonitis diagnosed prenatally differs from that of the newborn, not only concerning the mortality rates but also through reduced morbidity and overall better prognosis.

RESUMO

Abdominoperineal approach for rectosigmoidian resection, first imagined and performed in 1948 by Orwar Swenson, was the surgical technique that opened the pathway in the treatment of congenital megacolon (1). B. Duhamel (1956) and F. Soave (1964) intended to correct the postoperative complications appeared after the Duhamel technique and proposed surgical procedures that keep the aganglionic rectum in transit (2,3). In 1994 K. Bax reproduces the Duhamel procedure using laparoscopic approach (4). K.Georgeson, in 1995, reproduced the Swenson technique for rectosigmoidian resection using minimal invasive surgery (5).Today, this approach represents the most frequently used procedure for the radical treatment of congenital megacolon.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: Echinococcosis is one of the most frequent parasitosis and is endemic in Romania. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The data on 111 children with abdominal localization of hydatidosis who underwent exploration and treatment in 3 pediatric surgical clinics were reviewed. The study evaluated 59 patients who were treated at "Sf. Maria" pediatric hospital Iasi during 2004 and 2009, 47 at "Marie Curie" pediatric hospital from Bucharest during 2000 - 2009 and 5 children at Bacau General Hospital 2004-2009. The medical records were reviewed for: demographics, age, gender, location of the cyst, operative procedure, medical treatment, outcome, length of hospital stay and postoperative follow up. RESULTS: Age ranged between 2 and 17 years and male/female ratio was 1,1/1.67% of patients lived in rural areas. The liver was the most common organ involved: in 69 cases it was the only organ involved and there were 2 kidney cyst cases, 8 spleens involved, 2 cases in broad ligament, 13 peritoneal cases and 26 cases of cyst located in great omentum. The preferred surgical procedure was Lagrot partial pericystectomy. For medical antihelminthic treatment it was used Albendazole. As complications there were: biliary fistulas, postoperative cholangitis, infection of the residual cavity, anaphylactic reactions. The mortality rate was 0%. CONCLUSIONS: Most of the patients were from rural area. The liver was the major organ involved. The treatment includes both surgical and medical means. There is a relatively high rate of postoperative complications (although some of them being minor) in 31 patients.
