RESUMO

Observed choices between options representing a relative vice and a relative virtue have commonly been used as a measure of eating self-control in the literature. However, even though self-control operations may manifest across the post-choice consumption stage, either similarly or in different ways from the choice stage, most prior research has ignored consumption quantity of the chosen option. While the behavior of choosing a virtue instead of a vice does manifest self-control, we examine how this plays out in post-choice consumption. Specifically, we find that when processing resources are limited, after having chosen a virtue food, unrestrained eaters ironically consumed greater quantities and therefore more calories than restrained eaters (Study 1). This reflects more persistent self-control in the post-choice consumption stage among restrained eaters than unrestrained eaters, and occurs because choosing a virtue lowers accessibility of the self-control goal among unrestrained eaters relative to restrained eaters (Study 2), thereby increasing intake of the virtuous food. In contrast, subsequent to having chosen a vice, unrestrained eaters and restrained eaters did not show any such difference in intake (Study 1) or goal accessibility (Study 2). Together, these results reveal that persistence of self-control in the post-choice consumption stage depends on individuals' dietary restraint and their initial exercise of self-control in the choice decision. The mere act of choosing a virtue satisfies unrestrained eaters' self-control goal and leads to increased food intake, whereas the same act keeps the same goal activated among restrained eaters who reduce intake of the chosen virtue. Put differently, persistent self-control across choice and quantity decisions is observed only when those with a dietary goal show successful self-control enactment in the choice stage. We therefore highlight that the operation of self-control can be dynamic within a consumption episode, and thus, choice and post-choice quantity are both informative of self-control.

In Korea, decommissioning of nuclear power plants and transportation of the decommissioning waste are expected to expand in the near future. It is necessary to confirm that radiological risks to the public and workers are not significant through radiological safety assessment. The objective of this study is to assess the radiological safety for transportation of RPV waste, which is a major decommissioning waste with relatively high level of radioactivity. It was assumed that the waste would be transported to the Gyeongju disposal facility by land transportation. First, the source term and transportation method of the RPV waste were determined, and the external dose rates from the waste were calculated using MCNP. Then, transportation scenarios were assumed under both normal and accident conditions. Under the scenarios, radiation doses were calculated using the RADTRAN. Under normal operation scenarios without a transportation accident, assuming 40 shipments per year, the average individual doses for the public ranged from 6.56×10-6to 2.18×10-2mSv yr-1. The maximum individual doses for only a single shipment ranged from 2.43×10-6to 3.14×10-1mSv. For cargo handlers and vehicle crew members, the average doses were 2.26×101mSv yr-1and 2.95 mSv yr-1, respectively. Under transportation accident scenarios, average individual radiological risks which are product of the radiation doses and the annual accident rates ranged from 1.14×10-11to 1.61×10-10mSv yr-1by transportation route segment when considering the transportation accident rate. Average individual doses assuming transportation accident occurrence ranged from 2.62×10-4to 1.42×10-3mSv. The maximum individual dose under accident conditions was 7.99×10-2mSv. The calculated doses were below the regulatory limits in Korea. However, relatively high doses were observed for cargo handlers and vehicle crew members because of conservative assumptions. This study results can be used as basic data for the radiological safety assessment for the decommissioning waste transportation in the future.

Cellular energy is primarily produced from glucose and fat through glycolysis and fatty acid oxidation (FAO) followed by the tricarboxylic acid cycle in mitochondria; energy homeostasis is carefully maintained via numerous feedback pathways. In this report, we uncovered a new master regulator of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. When ubiquitin E3 ligase ß-TrCP2 was inducibly knocked out in ß-TrCP1 knockout adult mice, the resulting double knockout mice (DKO) lost fat mass rapidly. Biochemical analyses of the tissues and cells from ß-TrCP2 KO and DKO mice revealed that glycolysis, FAO, and lipolysis were dramatically upregulated. The absence of ß-TrCP2 increased the protein stability of metabolic rate-limiting enzymes including 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase (PFKFB3), adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL), carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A (CPT1A), and carnitine/acylcarnitine translocase (CACT). Our data suggest that ß-TrCP is a potential regulator for total energy homeostasis by simultaneously controlling glucose and fatty acid metabolism and that targeting ß-TrCP could be an effective strategy to treat obesity and other metabolic disorders.

BACKGROUND: Bone marrow (BM) is progressively filled with adipocytes during aging process. Thus, BM adipocytes-derived adiponectin (APN) affects the function of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). However, little is known about the effect of APN on migration ability of BMSCs cultured under hypoxic conditions, which is similar to the BM microenvironment. RESULTS: We found that the population and migration ability of BMSCs from APN KO mice was higher than that of WT mice due to increased stability of hypoxia inducible factor 1α (HIF1α). Stem cell factor (SCF)-activated STAT3 stimulated the induction of HIF1α which further stimulated SCF production, indicating that the SCF/STAT3/HIF1α positive loop was highly activated in the absence of APN. It implies that APN negatively regulated this positive loop by stimulating HIF1α degradation via the inactivation of GSK3ß. Furthermore, APN KO BMSCs were highly migratory toward EL-4 lymphoma, and the interaction between CD44 in BMSCs and hyaluronic acid (HA) from EL-4 enhanced the migration of BMSCs. On the other hand, the migrated BMSCs recruited CD8+ T cells into the EL-4 tumor tissue, resulting in the retardation of tumor growth. Additionally, gradually increased APN in BM on the aging process affects migration and related functions of BMSCs, thus aged APN KO mice showed more significant suppression of EL-4 growth than young APN KO mice due to higher migration and recruitment of CD8+ T cells. CONCLUSION: APN deficiency enhances CD44-mediated migration ability of BMSCs in the hypoxic conditions by the SCF/STAT3/HIF1α positive loop and influences the migration ability of BMSCs for a longer time depending on the aging process. OBJECTIVE: We identify individuals who set daily intake budgets and examine if an intervention making people estimate their calorie intake up to a certain point in the day helps those setting daily budgets to regulate their calorie intake for the remainder of the day, after high prior consumption. DESIGN: We conducted an online experiment in five countries: Australia, China, Germany, India, and the UK (n = 3,032) using a 2 (setting calorie budget: yes vs. no, measured) x 2 (intervention: intake reminder vs. control, manipulated) between-subjects design, with the amount of prior consumption measured. Participants were contacted in the afternoon. Those in the intervention condition were asked to estimate their prior calorie intake on that day. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: We measured the individual characteristics of those who set daily calorie budgets and the intended calorie intake for the remainder of the day. RESULTS: Among people who set daily calorie budgets, the intervention reduced intended calorie intake for the remainder of the day by 176 calories if they had already consumed a high amount of calories that day. CONCLUSION: A timely intervention to estimate one's calorie intake can lower additional intended calorie intake among those who set daily calorie budget.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, consumers are found to be more impulsive to purchase fitness products online. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to investigate a moderated mediation model of consumers' perception of COVID-19 and impulse buying behavior through fear moderated by income. A total of 608 responses were collected from consumers in the United States, and this study employed partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to examine the hypothesized relationships in the research model. The results showed that the perception of COVID-19 had a positive influence on fear, which in turn led to impulse buying behavior of fitness products. Moreover, consumers' income levels negatively moderated the positive relationship between fear and impulse buying behavior. The findings contribute to a better understanding of consumers' behavior and offer practical implications that enable marketers and retailers to predict consumers' behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Previous research has suggested the negative relationship between self-esteem and conspicuous consumption since conspicuous consumption is aimed to gain social recognition and signal status. However, it has not been much explored how this relationship holds depending on social classes. We propose subjective social class will moderate the relationship between social self-esteem and conspicuous consumption. We also hypothesize the mediating roles of social dominance orientation and life satisfaction in the proposed moderation effect. By conducting the survey with the American sample, we tested these predictions. In Study 1, we showed that the negative relationship between social self-esteem and conspicuous consumption appeared only among high subjective social class individuals. In Study 2, we replicated Study 1 and further demonstrated that social dominance orientation and life satisfaction respectively mediated the interactive effect of subjective social class and social self-esteem on conspicuous consumption. The results suggest that among individuals who perceive themselves to be in a high social class, a low level of social self-esteem is conducive to conspicuous consumption. The theoretical implications and limitations of the present investigation are discussed.

Fashion rental service, as a form of collaborative consumption, has gained increasing attention in the fashion industry. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, fashion rental businesses need to strategically respond to consumers with heightened contamination concerns. This research aims to understand how diverse consumption values of fashion rental service form attitudes towards the service depending on one's contamination concerns and predict adoption intentions. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data (N = 270). The findings suggest that functional, economic, and emotional values significantly increase attitudes leading to adoption intentions. Further, contamination concerns moderate the relationships between values and attitudes as well as attitudes and intentions. The findings enrich the literature of collaborative consumption by integrating theories of consumption value and consumer contamination. Furthermore, the results provide managerial implications for strategic communication of FRS to effectively reach consumers depending on their contamination concern.

OBJECTIVE: Nutrition and menu labelling have been increasingly implemented worldwide. This research examines the effect of nutrition information provision on the immediate and subsequent consumption decisions of restrained and unrestrained eaters. DESIGN: We conducted three scenario-based experiments. In Study 1 (N = 478) and Study 2 (N = 199), we manipulated the availability of nutrition information and measured dietary restraint. Study 3 (N = 275) extended Study 2 by adding a condition where we provided reference information about recommended daily calories. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: We measured choices between relatively low-calorie and high-calorie alternatives (Studies 1-3) and measured a subsequent decision to consume indulgent food (Studies 2 and 3). RESULTS: Nutrition information did not generally affect choices between low-calorie and high-calorie options, irrespective of dietary restraint. However, restrained eaters who chose a high-calorie option in the presence of nutrition information indicated they would reduce subsequent intake. CONCLUSION: Nutrition information does not necessarily reduce the choice of relatively high-calorie food, but it can help restrained eaters reduce subsequent intake after a high-calorie choice. These results suggest that despite not having an immediate effect on choices, nutrition and menu labelling may benefit restrained eaters at a later time.

When dining in restaurants, diners often anticipate indulgent consumption, such as enjoying a dessert. This study examined the effects of anticipating such indulgence on preferences for healthy food among restrained and unrestrained eaters. Two experiments revealed that anticipating indulgent consumption reduced restrained eaters' preference for the immediate consumption of healthy food. Conversely, unrestrained eaters' expectation of indulgent consumption increased or did not change their preference for a healthy option. The interactive effect of indulgence anticipation and dietary restraint on healthy food preference held regardless of availability of nutrition information. The findings suggest that, despite increasing concern for healthy eating, restrained consumers ironically show a preference for unhealthy food options when anticipating a dessert consumption opportunity. The present study provides theoretical implications for consumption anticipation, sequential consumption, and dietary restraint, and practical implications for restaurateurs as well as for consumers, health professionals, and policymakers regarding healthy eating.
