RESUMO

We demonstrate a highly biomimetic spiking neuron capable of fast and energy-efficient neuronal oscillation dynamics. Our simple neuron circuit is constructed using silicon-germanium heterojunction based bipolar transistors (HBTs) with nanowire structure. The HBT has a hysteresis window with steep switching characteristics and high current margin in the low voltage range, which enables a high spiking frequency (~ 245 kHz) with low energy consumption (≤ 1.37 pJ/spike). Also, gated structure achieves a stable balance in the activity of the neural system by incorporating both excitatory and inhibitory signal. Furthermore, inhibition of multiple strengths can be realized by adjusting the integration time according to the amplitude of the inhibitory signal. In addition, the spiking frequency can be tuned by mutually controlling the hysteresis window in the HBTs. These results ensure the sparse activity and homeostasis of neural networks.

RESUMO

We devised a novel strategy of two-stage anionic polymerization of (ε-caprolactam) in a twin screw extruder to control the generation of branched structures. Long-living anions of nylon 6 prepared in the first extrusion gave rise to a change in the molecular structure when they interacted with diamine added during the second extrusion. It has been found that the transfer of living anions between functional molecules having the same anion-forming groups affects the structural change of the resulting polymer molecule. The variation in chain structure has resulted in dramatic changes in the physical and dynamic properties of the polymer despite changes in molecular weight of less than 2 without forming a network structure. Tensile elongation and toughness at the optimum concentration of the additive were increased by 5 and 10 times, respectively, which was enough for the resulting polymer to be classified as a super-tough nylon without a toughener. It can be widely used as a matrix polymer for diverse composite materials.

RESUMO

We present a photonic technique for generating a frequency- modulated sub-terahertz signal for non-destructive or noninvasive sensing and imaging applications. Large frequency deviation was achieved by using optical phase modulation and heterodyne photomixing with an uni-travelling photodetector. The operation principle is theoretically derived and explained. In addition, the generation of 350-GHz frequency- modulated sub-terahertz signal with 6.7-GHz frequency deviation is experimentally demonstrated, and the possibility of frequencies up to 1 THz and wider frequency deviations is discussed.

RESUMO

We propose a high-sweeping-speed optically synchronized dual-channel terahertz (THz) signal generator for an active gas-sensing system with a superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixer. The generator can sweep a frequency range from 200 to 500 GHz at a speed of 375 GHz/s and a frequency resolution of 500 MHz. With the developed gas-sensing system, a gas-absorption-line measurement was successfully carried out with N(2)O gas in that frequency range.
