Poultry litter is a valuable source of nutrients for crop production, but its use in agriculture can lead to environmental and public health concerns due to the presence of pollutants, antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs). We compared the effect of different on-farm poultry litter composting processes on physicochemical, biological, and toxicological parameters, as well as on the occurrence of antibiotics and resistant Escherichia coli. The composting treatments consisted of passively-aerated piles C:N = 19 (PAC19), mechanically-aerated piles C:N = 19 (MAC19), and mechanically-aerated piles C:N = 30 (MAC30). Poultry litter composting led to a significant reduction of antibiotic residues, enteroparasites and antibiotic resistant E. coli. The conditions of the process, such as extra C source and mechanical aeration influence the quality of the final product. MAC19 is a low-cost effective method to reduce the potential risks associated with poultry litter use in agriculture and produce good quality compost.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the economic cost associated with implementing the Results Based Financing for Maternal and Newborn Health (RBF4MNH) Initiative in Malawi. No specific hypotheses were formulated ex-ante. SETTING: Primary and secondary delivery facilities in rural Malawi. PARTICIPANTS: Not applicable. The study relied almost exclusively on secondary financial data. INTERVENTION: The RBF4MNH Initiative was a results-based financing (RBF) intervention including both a demand and a supply-side component. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: Cost per potential and for actual beneficiaries. RESULTS: The overall economic cost of the Initiative during 2011-2016 amounted to €12 786 924, equivalent to €24.17 per pregnant woman residing in the intervention districts. The supply side activity cluster absorbed over 40% of all resources, half of which were spent on infrastructure upgrading and equipment supply, and 10% on incentives. Costs for the demand side activity cluster and for verification were equivalent to 14% and 6%, respectively of the Initiative overall cost. CONCLUSION: Carefully tracing resource consumption across all activities, our study suggests that the full economic cost of implementing RBF interventions may be higher than what was previously reported in published cost-effectiveness studies. More research is urgently needed to carefully trace the costs of implementing RBF and similar health financing innovations, in order to inform decision-making in low-income and middle-income countries around scaling up RBF approaches.

Escherichia coli is the bacteria most commonly used as an indicator of fecal contamination in agricultural environments. Moreover, E. coli is categorized as a priority pathogen due to its widespread antibiotic resistance. This study aimed to characterize E. coli strains isolated from 10 horticultural farms. Isolates were obtained from samples of vegetable crops (n = 62), the surrounding soil (n = 62), poultry litter (n = 8), and groundwater (n = 6). Phyllo-grouping assignment was performed on the total of E. coli isolates. Antibiograms and quantification of the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) were performed with antibiotics commonly used in humans. Biofilm formation capacity was studied by quantifying cells attached to culture tubes. Overall, 21 E. coli isolates were obtained. Three phylogenetic groups (A, B1, and C) and two Escherichia clade IV and IV-V were identified in the collection by polymerase chain reaction. Sixty-seven percent of the E. coli isolates were resistant to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and/or ampicillin. Amoxicillin MIC values ranged from 11.9 to >190.5 µg/mL and ampicillin MIC values ranged from 3 to >190.5 µg/mL. All the E. coli isolates, resistant and non-resistant, had biofilm forming capacity. The presence of phenotypic resistance on fresh produce and environmental matrices could present significant opportunities for contamination that result in health risks for consumers. To the authors' best knowledge, this is the first environmental assessment of resistant E. coli occurrence in horticultural farms in South America.

Monensin is an ionophore antibiotic used as a feed additive and growth promoter in cattle production worldwide. The occurrence of monensin in aquatic surficial ecosystems is of concern due to its possible detrimental effects on human health and native biota. Argentina is one of the most important cattle beef producers worldwide; however, there is little knowledge on the environmental occurrence of monensin and the associated risks to aquatic biota. In this study, we developed a method for the extraction and quantification of monensin in surface water; then, we evaluated the occurrence of monensin in a stream impacted by different animal husbandry's operations, and then, we analyzed the ecological implications of monensin residues on aquatic organisms using the risk quotient (RQ) method. Sampling was carried out on August 2017 from the headwaters to the floodplain of the El Pantanoso stream, Buenos Aires province, Argentina. Monensin detection frequency was 75% (n = 20). The median level was 0.40 µg/L and the maximum concentration was 4.70 µg/L. The main input of monensin was from a cattle slaughterhouse, an activity that has not been considered before in the literature as a source of emission of veterinary pharmaceuticals into the environment. The RQ assessment showed that monensin levels could have potential negative effects on aquatic biota in the sampling site closest to the cattle slaughterhouse. The data obtained in this study shows that monensin was present in El Pantanoso surface waters at levels of high ecotoxicological risk to aquatic biota.

Glyphosate is the most widely-used pesticide for weed control in agriculture and in urban and residential areas. This is the first study to quantify glyphosate and AMPA levels in surface water in Australia from different land uses. Glyphosate and AMPA was measured in surface water from 10 rural streams, 30 urban stormwater wetlands and 9 urban streams located in and around the city of Melbourne, Australia on five occasions between October 2017 and February 2018. Glyphosate and AMPA were present in most of the urban surface water samples. The frequency of detection of glyphosate was 77% in wetlands and 79% in urban streams, whereas it was only detected in 4% of the rural streams. Similarly, AMPA detection was 91% in wetlands and 97% in urban streams, whereas it was only present in 6% of the rural stream samples. In both urban streams and wetlands, the highest average glyphosate concentrations occurred in November (1.8 ±â€¯2.2 µg L-1). Overall, wetlands and streams associated with urban land use are vulnerable to glyphosate contamination. These results highlight the importance of screening for contaminants in urban stormwater to identify the source of pollutants that may end up in aquatic ecosystems and the risks therefrom.

Nurses have an integral role to play in achieving the 95-95-95 goals to stem the HIV epidemic. We used the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) theoretical model to develop a nurse-delivered, mHealth intervention to support antiretroviral therapy adherence among female sex workers living with HIV in Mombasa, Kenya. Twenty-three purposively sampled female sex workers living with HIV participated in 5 focus group discussions to iteratively develop the message content as well as the format and structure of the nurse-delivered, text-based intervention. Focus group discussion interview guides were developed in accordance with the IMB model. Transcripts were analyzed according to IMB themes, and findings were used to develop the intervention. Information-oriented texts addressed concerns and misconceptions; motivation-oriented texts reinforced women's desires to feel healthy enough to engage in activities; and behavioral skills-oriented texts included strategies to remember medication doses. The nurse-delivered, theory-based, culturally tailored intervention to support medication adherence was evaluated.

Glyphosate is currently the most widely used herbicide in the world, yet screening of environmental waters for this chemical is limited by the need for specialized derivatization and measurement methods that can be tedious and time-consuming. In this work, we present a novel method for the detection and quantification at trace levels of glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in environmental water samples. The detection and quantification of the analytes was performed by liquid chromatography (LC) coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). Chromatographic separation was achieved with an ion-exchange column and a pH-gradient elution of a solution of ammonium hydroxide and ammonium acetate. The limit of detection for glyphosate and AMPA was 0.25 µg L-1 and the limit of quantification was 0.5 µg L-1with a 20-µL injection. The method was used to investigate the levels of glyphosate and AMPA in surface water samples from the Yarra River catchment area and urban constructed stormwater wetlands. The results indicate that at the time of sampling, no glyphosate or AMPA was present in the samples from the Yarra River catchment area (n = 10). However, glyphosate was detected above the limit of quantification in 33% of the wetland samples (n = 12), with concentrations ranging from 1.95 to 2.96 µg L-1. Similarly, AMPA was quantified in 83% of the wetland samples, with concentrations ranging from 0.55 to 2.42 µg L-1. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a pH-gradient LC-MS/MS method for glyphosate and AMPA analysis at ultratrace levels, with minimal sample processing, avoiding costly, time-consuming derivatization and preconcentration steps. We measured the occurrence and seasonal variations of glyphosate and its metabolite, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), in different environmental compartments within the limits of an agricultural basin. This topic is of high relevance since glyphosate is the most applied pesticide in agricultural systems worldwide. We were able to quantify the seasonal variations of glyphosate that result mainly from endo-drift inputs, that is, from direct spraying either onto genetically modified (GM) crops (i.e., soybean and maize) or onto weeds in no-till practices. We found that both glyphosate and AMPA accumulate in soil, but the metabolite accumulates to a greater extent due to its higher persistence. Knowing that glyphosate and AMPA were present in soils (> 93% of detection for both compounds), we aimed to study the dispersion to other environmental compartments (surface water, stream sediments, and groundwater), in order to establish the degree of non-point source pollution. Also, we assessed the relationship between the water-table depth and glyphosate and AMPA levels in groundwater. All of the studied compartments had variable levels of glyphosate and AMPA. The highest frequency of detections was found in the stream sediments samples (glyphosate 95%, AMPA 100%), followed by surface water (glyphosate 28%, AMPA 50%) and then groundwater (glyphosate 24%, AMPA 33%). Despite glyphosate being considered a molecule with low vertical mobility in soils, we found that its detection in groundwater was strongly associated with the month where glyphosate concentration in soil was the highest. However, we did not find a direct relation between groundwater table depth and glyphosate or AMPA detections. This is the first simultaneous study of glyphosate and AMPA seasonal variations in soil, groundwater, surface water, and sediments within a rural basin.

Glyphosate is intensively used in agricultural fields and it is frequently detected in non-target wetland ecosystems. The floating hydrophyte Ludwigia peploides is widely distributed in American streams and it is an abundant species. Therefore, our objectives were (1) to establish and validate an extraction and quantification methodology for glyphosate in L. peploides and (2) to evaluate the role of this species as a potential glyphosate biomonitor in an agricultural watershed. We developed a new method of glyphosate extraction from leaves of L. peploides. The method recovery was 117± 20% and the matrix effect 20%. To validate the method using environmental samples, plants of L. peploides were collected in March 2016 from eight monitoring sites of El Crespo stream. Surface water and sediment samples were collected at the same time to measure glyphosate and to calculate bioconcentration factors (BCFs) and biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs). Glyphosate was detected in 94.11% in leaves, the concentrations ranging between 4 and 108 µg/kg. Glyphosate was detected in surface water and sediments at 75% and 100% of the samples, at concentrations that varied between 0 and 1.7 µg/L and 5-10.50 µg/kg dry weight, respectively. The mean BCFs and BSAFs were 88.10 L/Kg and 7.61, respectively. These results indicate that L. peploides bioaccumulates glyphosate mainly bioavailable in the surface water. In this sense, L. peploides could be used as a biomonitor organism to evaluate glyphosate levels in freshwater aquatic ecosystems because, in addition to its capacity to bioconcentrate glyphosate, it is easy to sample and it has a restricted mobility.

In the present study, we evaluated the spatial and temporal trends of current-use pesticides in surface water and sediments as well as their relationship with hydrological stream dynamics within the agricultural watershed of El Crespo stream (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina). We sampled 2 contrasting sites: site 1 (upstream), surrounded by agricultural lands, and site 2 (downstream), surrounded by natural grasslands. Most of the applied pesticides (glyphosate, 2,4-D, atrazine, tebuconazole, and imidacloprid) were detected at high frequencies in surface water samples at both sites. However, only glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) were present at high concentrations and had a significant spatial-temporal trend. The highest concentrations were found during spring 2014 at site 1, in association with the intense rains that occurred in that season. The fact that glyphosate and AMPA concentrations were higher than the rest of the studied compounds is closely related to the land use within the watershed, as glyphosate was the most applied herbicide during the fallow period of glyphosate-resistant crops (soybean, maize). The pesticide mixture had a significant spatial-temporal trend, reaching the highest levels during storm flow events in spring 2014. The intensive rains in spring 2014 could be the main factor influencing stream hydrology and pesticide behavior at El Crespo watershed. The estimated annual pesticide losses were 3.11 g/ha at site 1 and 0.72 g/ha at site 2. In Argentina, glyphosate use has increased exponentially in recent years as a result of the widespread adoption of no-till management combined with genetically modified glyphosate-resistant crops. This massive use of glyphosate has created concern about its potential environmental impact. Sorption-desorption of glyphosate was studied in 3 Argentinean soils with contrasting characteristics. Glyphosate sorption isotherms were modeled using the Freundlich equation to estimate the sorption coefficient (Kf ). Glyphosate sorption was high, and the Kf varied from 115.6 to 1612 mg1-1/n L1/n /kg. Cerro Azul soil had the highest glyphosate sorption capacity as a result of a combination of factors such as higher clay content, cation exchange capacity, total iron, and aluminum oxides, and lower available phosphorus and pH. Desorption isotherms were also modeled using the Freundlich equation. In general, desorption was very low (<12%). The low values of hysteresis coefficient confirm that glyphosate strongly sorbs to the soils and that it is almost an irreversible process. Anguil soil had a significantly higher desorption coefficient (Kfd ) than the other soils, associated with its lower clay content and higher pH and phosphorus. Glyphosate high sorption and low desorption to the studied soils may prevent groundwater contamination. However, it may also affect its bioavailability, increasing its persistence and favoring its accumulation in the environment.
