Objective: to analyze the relationship of the similarity of planetary health diet and habitual diet with the practice of physical activity on theacademic performance of adolescent high school students by gender.Method: 877 adolescents were evaluated. The diet is reviewed through the 24-hour reminder. Physical activity was classified according to typeof activity, frequency, duration, and intensity using the APALQ questionnaire. The caloric intake of adolescents was compared with the proposalof the EAT-LANCET commission, and the relationship between physical activity and diet with academic performance was again established.Results: Mexican adolescents do not comply with the proposal of a planetary health diet. No relationship was found between physical activityand academic performance. On the other hand, animal proteins rich in fats are consumed doubly according to the recommendation; these andwhole grains, both are inversely related to better academic performance.Conclusions: Mexican adolescents are far from consuming a planetary health diet. Physical activity was not related to academic performance, butthere is an inverse relationship between fat-rich animal proteins and whole grains in relation to subjects that contribute to academic performance,which suggests that a healthy diet such as the planetary diet proposal could have an impact on environmental sustainability and favorably impactthe academic performance of adolescents.(AU)


Objetivo: analizar la relación de la similitud entre la dieta de salud planetaria y la dieta habitual con la práctica de actividad física sobre elrendimiento académico en adolescentes estudiantes de secundaria por género.Método: se evaluaron 877 adolescentes. La dieta se revisó a través del recordatorio de 24 horas. Se clasificó la actividad física según el tipo deactividad, frecuencia, duración e intensidad con el cuestionario APALQ. Se comparó la ingesta calórica de los adolescentes con la propuesta porla comisión EAT-LANCET y se establecieron relaciones entre la actividad física y la dieta con el rendimiento académico.Resultados: los adolescentes mexicanos no cumplen con la propuesta de una dieta de salud planetaria. No se encontró relación entre laactividad física y el rendimiento académico. Por otro lado, las proteínas animales ricas en grasas se consumen doblemente de acuerdo con larecomendación; estas y los cereales integrales, ambos se relacionan inversamente con un mejor rendimiento académico.Conclusiones: los adolescentes mexicanos están lejos de consumir una dieta planetaria saludable. La actividad física no se relacionó con elrendimiento académico, pero sí existe una relación inversa entre las proteínas animales ricas en grasas y los cereales integrales con relación amaterias que contribuyen con el rendimiento académico, lo que sugiere que una alimentación saludable como la propuesta de la dieta planetariapodría tener impacto sobre la sostenibilidad ambiental e impactar favorablemente en el rendimiento académico de los adolescente.(AU)

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory and metabolic biomarkers have been associated with hepatocellular cancer (HCC) risk in phases I and II biomarker studies. We developed and internally validated a robust metabolic biomarker panel predictive of HCC in a longitudinal phase III study. METHODS: We used data and banked serum from a prospective cohort of 2266 adult patients with cirrhosis who were followed until the development of HCC (n=126). We custom designed a FirePlex immunoassay to measure baseline serum levels of 39 biomarkers and established a set of biomarkers with the highest discriminatory ability for HCC. We performed bootstrapping to evaluate the predictive performance using C-index and time-dependent area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). We quantified the incremental predictive value of the biomarker panel when added to previously validated clinical models. RESULTS: We identified a nine-biomarker panel (P9) with a C-index of 0.67 (95% CI 0.66 to 0.67), including insulin growth factor-1, interleukin-10, transforming growth factor ß1, adipsin, fetuin-A, interleukin-1 ß, macrophage stimulating protein α chain, serum amyloid A and TNF-α. Adding P9 to our clinical model with 10 factors including AFP improved AUROC at 1 and 2 years by 4.8% and 2.7%, respectively. Adding P9 to aMAP score improved AUROC at 1 and 2 years by 14.2% and 7.6%, respectively. Adding AFP L-3 or DCP did not change the predictive ability of the P9 model. CONCLUSIONS: We identified a panel of nine serum biomarkers that is independently associated with developing HCC in cirrhosis and that improved the predictive ability of risk stratification models containing clinical factors.

BACKGROUND: Standard cancer treatments show a lack of selectivity that has led to the search for new strategies against cancer. The selective elimination of cancer cells modulating the redox environment, known as "selective oxycution", has emerged as a viable alternative. This research focuses on characterizing the unexplored Escallonia genus plant extracts and evaluating their potential effects on cancer's redox balance, cytotoxicity, and activation of death pathways. METHODS: 36 plant extracts were obtained from 4 different species of the Escallonia genus (E. illinita C. Presl, E. rubra (Ruiz & Pav.) Pers., E. revoluta (Ruiz & Pav.) Pers., and E. pulverulenta (Ruiz & Pav.) Pers.), which were posteriorly analyzed by their phytoconstituents, antioxidant capacity, and GC-MS. Further, redox balance assays (antioxidant enzymes, oxidative damage, and transcription factors) and cytotoxic effects (SRB, ∆Ψmt, and caspases actives) of those plant extracts were analyzed on four cell lines (HEK-293T, MCF-7, HT-29, and PC-3). RESULTS: 36 plant extracts were obtained, and their phytoconstituents and antioxidant capacity were established. Further, only six extracts had EC50 values < 10 µg*mL- 1, indicating high toxicity against the tested cells. From those, two plant extracts were selective against different cancer cell lines: the hexane extract of E. pulverulenta´s stem was selective for HT-29, and the ethyl acetate extract of E. rubra´s stem was selective for PC-3. Both extracts showed unbalanced redox effects and promoted selective cell death. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study proving "selective oxycution" induced by Chilean native plant extracts.

AIM: The aim of the present study was to compare the Preece-Baines 1 (PB1) model fit between longitudinal and cross-sectional data in male soccer players and to adjust the height growth curve by maturity status. METHODS: A final sample of 57 male Portuguese soccer players from professional soccer academies was included. Longitudinal height records were measured between 8 and 17 times in each subject from 2-8 years to 14-17 years. Additionally, longitudinal height records were used as cross-sectional data along with 1087 cross-sectional height records taken from 602 Portuguese soccer players. Skeletal age was estimated by Tanner-Whitehouse III method from a left hand-wrist radiograph. Age at peak height velocity (PHV) was estimated by PB1 model for longitudinal and cross-sectional data and by maturity status. RESULTS: No significant differences were found between all the longitudinal estimates of 57 players and the random cross-sectional samples for, S1 parameter and for growth velocity at PHV, at TO, and for age at PHV. The age at PHV in early, on-time, and late maturers were 12.26, 12.9, and 13.58 years, respectively. CONCLUSION: PB1 adjusted the height growth of Portuguese male soccer players from cross-sectional data, obtaining an estimate PHV very similar to that found from longitudinal data. A maturity time difference of ≈0.6 years was found between the age at PHV of on-time, early, and on-time and late maturity state.

The aim of this work was to find out if biofilms can be made by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from agave plants using agave fructans as sole carbohydrate substrates or if it was necessary to use fructose as a breakdown product of such polymers. This is part of a research project geared to develop industrial lactic acid production from agave fructans, an abundant raw material in Mexico's agave plantations. Present results showed that nine strains of LAB isolated from Agave salmiana and belonging to genus Lacticaseibacillus and Enterococcus produced exopolysaccharides directly from agave fructans to a greater extent than with fructose. The best polysaccharide productions in planktonic cultures were Lacticaseibacillus paracasei strains DG2, DG3, DG4 and DG8. Furthermore, all nine LAB strains produced biofilms on polystyrene microplates, much better with agave fructans than with fructose. In most strains, biofilm formation was favored at pH from 6.0 to 6.5, except for strains DG7 and DG9 where pH 5.5 was optimal. Biofilm formation required between 3 and 5 days of incubation in all Lacticaseibacillus paracasei strains, whereas Enterococcus faecium required a little less of 3 days. Present results support the straight use of agave fructans to develop LAB biofilms using agave epiphytic bacteria. This finding simplifies upstream processing of agave fructans to be used for future lactic acid fermentation in LAB biofilm reactors.

Many studies have reported the benefits of probiotic microorganisms and the production of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. Determining the proteolytic and ACE inhibition capacities during whey fermentation was the goal of the study. Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG, Streptococcus thermophilus SY-102, and both bacteria together were initially inoculated into whey, reaching an initial concentration of 108 CFU per milliliter in each fermentation system. Through the use of TNBS, SDS-PAGE, and SEC-HPLC methods, the proteolytic profile was examined. An in vitro investigation was performed to test the ACE inhibition capacity. With S. thermophilus, the logarithmic phase of microbial development was shorter than with L. rhamnosus (6 and 12 h, respectively). The logarithmic phase in the co-culture fermentation, however, was extended to 24 h. There were no significant differences in pH between the fermentations. However, the co-culture had a greater concentration of protein hydrolysis (453 ± 0.06 µg/mL), as indicated by the amount of free amino groups. Similarly, this fermentation produced more low molecular weight peptides. The higher inhibition activity, which increased at the conclusion of the fermentation with the co-culture and reached 53.42%, was influenced by the higher peptide synthesis. These findings highlighted the significance of creating useful co-culture products.

Acute type A dissection presenting with cerebral malperfusion has high morbidity and mortality. Given the complexity of underlying vascular involvement, it is a challenging clinical scenario. Many of these patients are not deemed surgical candidates. If surgery is considered, it often requires complex aortic arch and neck vessel reconstruction. We present a 48-year-old male with an acute type A aortic dissection that presented with paraplegia and decreased level of consciousness. A Computed Tomography showed occlusion of both common carotid arteries. He was successfully treated with a multi-site perfusion strategy and a Hybrid Frozen Elephant Trunk graft to achieve fast restoration of the cerebral circulation and minimize brain ischemia and permanent neurological damage. From this case, we learn that aggressive arch and neck vessel reconstruction supported by multi-site perfusion could help improve mortality and neurological outcomes in selected patients.

ABSTRACT We describe a 60-year-old woman with post-myocardial infarction (MI) ventricular septal defect (VSD) and cardiogenic shock who was successfully stabilized with veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) as a bridge therapy for the surgical closure of her VSD. This case highlights the role of VA-ECMO in the management of post-MI VSD to improve the results of surgical repair and patient survival.

The mobility of the human body depends on, among other things, muscle health, which can be affected by several situations, such as aging, increased oxidative stress, malnutrition, cancer, and the lack or excess of physical exercise, among others. Genetic, metabolic, hormonal, and nutritional factors are intricately involved in maintaining the balance that allows proper muscle function and fiber recovery; therefore, the breakdown of the balance among these elements can trigger muscle atrophy. The study from the nutrigenomic perspective of nutritional factors has drawn wide attention recently; one of these is the use of certain compounds derived from foods and plants known as phytochemicals, to which various biological activities have been described and attributed in terms of benefiting health in many respects. This work addresses the effect that the phytochemicals curcumin from Curcuma longa Linn and sulforaphane from Brassicaceae species have shown to exert on muscle function, recovery, and the prevention of muscle atrophy, and describes the impact on muscle health in general. In the same manner, there are future perspectives in research on novel compounds as potential agents in the prevention or treatment of medical conditions that affect muscle health.

Plants of the genus Opuntia spp are widely distributed in Africa, Asia, Australia and America. Specifically, Mexico has the largest number of wild species; mainly O. streptacantha, O. hyptiacantha, O. albicarpa, O. megacantha and O. ficus-indica. The latter being the most cultivated and domesticated species. Its main bioactive compounds include pigments (carotenoids, betalains and betacyanins), vitamins, flavonoids (isorhamnetin, kaempferol, quercetin) and phenolic compounds. Together, they favor the different plant parts and are considered phytochemically important and associated with control, progression and prevention of some chronic and infectious diseases. Part 1 collected information on its preventive actions against atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and obesity, hepatoprotection, effects on human infertility and chemopreventive capacity. Now, this second review (Part 2), compiles the data from published research (in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies) on its neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, antiulcerative, antimicrobial, antiviral potential and in the treatment of skin wounds. The aim of both reviews is to provide scientific evidences of its beneficial properties and to encourage health professionals and researchers to expand studies on the pharmacological and therapeutic effects of Opuntia spp.

Amaranth is a protein-rich seed, highly consumed in Mexico and reported as a potential source of bio-peptides with physiological function. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate and identify bioactive peptide sequences from amaranth protein fractions released by pepsin and pancreatin in vitro digestion. Multifunctional bioactivities of peptides were measured through antihypertensive, antithrombotic and antioxidant assays. Peptide sequences were identified by analysis with a Nano-LC-ESI-MS/MS. With these results, it was demonstrated that the in vitro enzymatic digestion mechanism allows the release of multifunctional bioactive peptide fractions from amaranth proteins.

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMO) have attracted great interest in recent years due to their role in boosting infants and adults health. According to several in vitro, in vivo and clinical studies, gastrointestinal and immune physiological systems benefit the most from HMO intake. Other organ systems, such as the respiratory, central nervous, circulatory, locomotor, and urinary systems have also been found to be affected by the HMO consumption in the recent decade. Due to their positive impact on human health, the incorporation of HMO into the infant formula or other functional foods has become highly desirable. Currently, their large-scale production is limited to 2'-fucosyllactose (2'FL) and lacto-N-neotetraose (LNnT) that are obtained through fermentation and added to the infant formula as fortifiers. Fewer advances have been made for other HMO to reach the industrial scale synthesis. The present paper summarizes the latest research on HMO in terms of their health benefits and synthetic methodologies, with the overall aim to establish the current status and trends in both fields.

Several modern drugs, which are derived from traditional herbal medicine are used in contemporary pharmacotherapy. Currently, the study of drug-plant interactions in pain has increased in recent years, looking for greater efficacy of the drug and reduce side effects. The antinociception induced by intragastric co-administration of the combination of pomegranate peel extract (PoPEx) and acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) was assessed using the isobolographic analysis in formalin test (nociceptive and inflammatory pain). The effective dose that produced 30% of antinociception (ED30) was calculated for both drugs from the logarithmic dose-response curves, subsequently generating a curve with the combination on fixed proportions (1:1) of PoPEx and ASA. Through isobolographic analysis, this experimental ED30 was compared with the calculated theoretical additive ED30. The result was a synergistic interaction, the experimental ED30 was significantly smaller (p < 0.05) than the theoretical ED30. The antinociceptive mechanism of the PoPEx-ASA combination involves the l-Arginine/NO/cGMP pathway, antioxidant capacity, and high content of total phenols. These findings suggest that an interaction between PoPEx and ASA could be a novel treatment for inflammatory and nociceptive pain, also diminish the secondary reactions of ASA.

BACKGROUND: Exercise training induces adaptive physiological and morphological modifications in the entire organism; however, excessive loads of training may increase damage in tissues. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of silymarin in lung and liver histological changes in rats subjected to exercise training (ET). METHODS: Male Wistar rats were subjected to an 8-week ET treadmill program 5 days per week, 60 min/session, and were previously administered 100 mg ascorbic acid or 100 mg of silymarin. RESULTS: Silymarin increased alveolar and bronchial muscle size, improve vascularization, and reduced tissue inflammation. In liver, silymarin promoted the reduction of lipid content. CONCLUSION: Silymarin supplementation may improve inflammation in pulmonary tissue after 8 weeks of the ET treadmill program, improve cell recovery, and reduce intrahepatic lipid content.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) caused by Mycobacterium Tuberculosis (TB) is a rare entity. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy had been used as an effective therapy for this cases, but the evidence is scarce. We present a case that took place in the middle of SARS-CoV2 pandemic. A 33-year-old female presented with ARDS due to pulmonary TB infection (pneumonia with empyema and pneumothorax), which required invasive mechanical ventilation with poor response. Long term veno-arterio-venous (VAV) ECMO, overlapped with veno-venous ECMO, was used as a salvage therapy with a good response for a total of 26 days. This is an example of the effectiveness of this therapy in this scenario, never described before. The fact that this therapy was used in the middle of SARS-CoV2 pandemic, with limited resources available, was remarkable, but it was encouraged by previous successful experiences.
