RESUMO

Stingless bees (Meliponini) are a ubiquitous and diverse element of the pantropical melittofauna, and have significant cultural and economic importance. This review outlines their diversity, and provides identification keys based on external morphology, brief accounts for each of the recognized genera, and an updated checklist of all living and fossil species. In total there are currently 605 described extant species in 45 extant genera, and a further 18 extinct species in nine genera, seven of which are extinct. A new fossil genus, Adactylurina Engel, gen. nov., is also described for a species in Miocene amber from Ethiopia. In addition to the systematic review, the biology of stingless bees is summarized with an emphasis on aspects related to their nesting biology and architecture.

Understanding the floral and reproductive biology of botanical species is crucial for the development of strategies in plant breeding systems. Jatropha curcas L. is a promising species for the manufacture of biofuels, being previously studied mainly in genetic improvement to develop characteristics suitable to biofuels. In order to contribute with data for hybridization and breeding programs, this paper studies the floral biology and reproductive system in two experimental populations of different ages of Jatropha curcas in Cruz das Almas/BA. Both of them were examined about their anthesis, durability, number of flowers, stigma receptivity, P:O ratio, and reproduction tests. As observed, Jatropha curcas is a monoecious species and its flowering occurs between September and April. Inflorescences are composed of unisexual flowers with daytime anthesis (♂: 05-06h; ♀: 07-08h), where the staminates last 10h and pistillates 60h. The physic nut is self-compatible, forming fruits by self-fecundation and cross-pollination, although the greatest number of fruits/seeds is generated by natural pollination. Experiment 02, presented a larger number of flowers, probably due to the plant's age and physiology. Performing artificial pollination between 08:00h and 09:30h is recommended for larger production since the stigma is receptive and the flowers have a large amount of pollen available.

BACKGROUND: Animal pollination is an important ecosystem function and service, ensuring both the integrity of natural systems and human well-being. Although many knowledge shortfalls remain, some high-quality data sets on biological interactions are now available. The development and adoption of standards for biodiversity data and metadata has promoted great advances in biological data sharing and aggregation, supporting large-scale studies and science-based public policies. However, these standards are currently not suitable to fully support interaction data sharing. RESULTS: Here we present a vocabulary of terms and a data model for sharing plant-pollinator interactions data based on the Darwin Core standard. The vocabulary introduces 48 new terms targeting several aspects of plant-pollinator interactions and can be used to capture information from different approaches and scales. Additionally, we provide solutions for data serialization using RDF, XML, and DwC-Archives and recommendations of existing controlled vocabularies for some of the terms. Our contribution supports open access to standardized data on plant-pollinator interactions. CONCLUSIONS: The adoption of the vocabulary would facilitate data sharing to support studies ranging from the spatial and temporal distribution of interactions to the taxonomic, phenological, functional, and phylogenetic aspects of plant-pollinator interactions. We expect to fill data and knowledge gaps, thus further enabling scientific research on the ecology and evolution of plant-pollinator communities, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services, and the development of public policies. The proposed data model is flexible and can be adapted for sharing other types of interactions data by developing discipline-specific vocabularies of terms.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Propolis extracts are widely used in traditional folk medicine and exhibit several properties such as antitumor, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial. However, these products have not been investigated in combination with medicines used in clinical practice. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition of propolis extracts from Apis mellifera scutellata and different Meliponini species and characterize their cytotoxicity against tumor cells, antibacterial effects, and interference with the actions of doxorubicin and gentamicin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Chromatographic and spectrometric analyses were performed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC)-tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). Propolis extracts were evaluated for cytotoxicity and synergism using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and the antimicrobial activity was examined using the broth microdilution technique and synergism was investigated using checkerboard and time-kill assays. RESULTS: The chemical characterization revealed the presence of 63 compounds, and the extracts showed selective cytotoxicity against tumor cell lines. Propolis extracts of mandaçaia and mirim exerted selective synergistic cytotoxicity in combination with doxorubicin. Except for the tubuna extract, all evaluated extracts exhibited antibacterial effects on gram-positive strains. Mandaçaia and mirim extracts exerted a synergistic effect with gentamicin; however, only mandaçaia extract exerted a selective effect. CONCLUSION: Propolis could be a source of antineoplastics and antibiotics. These natural products may reduce the occurrence of doxorubicin and gentamicin related adverse effects, resistance, or both.

Although the importance of bees as the pollinators responsible for maintaining gene flow for many native and cultivated plants in ecosystems around the world is recognized, much of their biodiversity and behavior remains to be discovered. Stingless bees are considered key pollinators for several plant species in tropical and subtropical ecosystems and they also provide pollination services for economically important agricultural crops. Many countries are using the honey bee (Apis mellifera Linnaeus, 1758, Hymenoptera: Apidae) as a surrogate to evaluate the risk of pesticides to all species of bees. However, there is uncertainty regarding the extent to which honey bees can serve as surrogates for non-Apis bee species in the risk assessment for pesticides. This paper provides a short overview of the life history traits relevant in risk assessment of stingless bees. It summarizes what is known about stingless bee exposure to pesticides compared to that of honey bees and presents criteria for potential candidate species from Brazil for use in pesticide risk assessment in tropical environments. This paper also identifies gaps in knowledge of bee biology and pesticide exposure routes not covered by the current honey bee exposure assessment paradigm. Based on these gaps, research is needed on life history traits, estimates of nectar and pollen consumption, mud, resin, and water collection and available protocols to adequately assess toxic effects of pesticides to stingless bees. This review is part of a series of papers on the risk of exposure of non-Apis bees to pesticides.

RESUMO

Males of some groups of bees have to find a place outside the nests to sleep, sometimes forming "male sleeping aggregations". Here we report the first record of "dense" male sleeping aggregation of two different genera of Eucerini bees observed in Bahia, Brazil. We discuss the possible aim of this kind of aggregation as well the plant utilized on aggregate.

The present study intended to verify which factors (phylogenetic relationship or local ecological conditions) would determine how Frieseomelitta bees use floral resources. The data obtained in the literature on biocenotic studies of Apoidea visiting flowers in Brazil were analyzed, with identification and quantification of floral resources used by Frieseomelitta species in different areas. The phenogram of similarity on use of resources among Frieseomelitta species was compared to the phylogenetic hypothesis proposed for the group. Among the eight Frieseomelitta species registered in 19 studies, F. doederleini (Friese), F. francoi (Moure), F. languida Moure, F. varia (Lepeletier) e Frieseomelitta sp. nov., were collected using resources from 36 plant families. F. doederleini, F. languida e F. varia centralized their activity in Caesalpiniaceae, Malpighiaceae e Anacardiaceae. The similarities and disparities found among areas and Frieseomelitta species reflected the similarities and differences of the vegetation composition in each area. Frieseomelitta bees presented a forage pattern similar to that one presented by other highly social bees, visiting flowers of many plant species, but concentrating their activities in few plant species. Despite the low phylogenetic relationship between F. languida and F. doederleini, they showed a high similarity on the use of floral resource, while F. varia e F. languida, species with high phylogenetic relationship, showed low similarity in the use of resource. Although the data obtained are not conclusive, it indicates that phylogenetic restrictions do not influence the pattern of use of floral resource by Frieseomelitta bees.

No presente estudo procurou-se investigar fatores que influenciariam o modo de utilização de recursos florais por abelhas Frieseomelitta von Ihering. Os dados obtidos na literatura sobre estudos biocenóticos de Apoidea visitando flores no Brasil foram analisados, com identificação e quantificação dos recursos florais utilizados pelas espécies de Frieseomelitta, em diferentes áreas. O fenograma de similaridade no uso de recursos entre as espécies de Frieseomelitta foi comparado com a hipótese filogenética proposta para o grupo. Das oito espécies de Frieseomelitta registradas em 19 estudos, F. doederleini (Friese); F. francoi (Moure); F. languida Moure, F. varia (Lepeletier) e Frieseomelitta sp. nov.; foram amostradas em 36 famílias botânicas. As similaridades e as disparidades encontradas entre as áreas e entre as espécies de Frieseomelitta refletiram as semelhanças e diferenças da composição da vegetação de cada área. Abelhas Frieseomelitta apresentam padrão de forrageio semelhante ao observado para outros grupos de abelhas eussociais, visitando diversas espécies vegetais, mas concentrando a visita em poucas espécies. F. languida e F. doederleini, embora apresentem parentesco mais distante dentre as espécies do gênero, mostraram maior similaridade no uso dos recursos, enquanto que F. varia e F. languida, espécies mais aparentadas do gênero, não apresentaram similaridades no uso de recursos. Embora as informações disponíveis não sejam, ainda, conclusivas, mostram que as restrições filogenéticas não influenciam específicamente o padrão de utilização dos recursos florais pelas espécies de Frieseomelitta.
