RESUMO

B-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia (B-ALL) is the main neoplasia affecting children worldwide, in which cytotoxic chemotherapy remains the main treatment modality. In this study, we analyzed the profile of inflammatory markers concerning oxidative stress and cytokines in 17 B-ALL patients. Peripheral blood (PB) and bone marrow (BM) samples were collected and evaluated for the pro-oxidative status (nitric oxide products-NOx and hydroperoxides), antioxidants (sulfhydryl groups-SH and total radical-trapping antioxidant parameter-TRAP), and cytokines (TNF-α, IFN-γ), at diagnosis (D0) to and the end of the induction phase (D28). At D28, hydroperoxides were higher in PB, concomitant to TNF-α levels. INF-γ was increased in the BM at D28. Hydroperoxides were higher in patients presenting malignant cells in BM and/or PB after treatment, a condition named minimal residual disease (MRD) when compared to those without MRD at D28. These findings suggest that oxidative stress and cytokines vary across the B-ALL induction phase, and lipid peroxidation is a potential marker associated with MRD status.

Animal welfare, in addition to individual aspects, depends on the understanding and dedication of those responsible for the shelter. The objective of this study was to evaluate the welfare of dogs kept in municipal shelters in the state of Paraná, using the Shelter Quality protocol. A total of 16 shelters, 439 dogs and 165 enclosures were evaluated in the fall season of 2017. Most shelters presented dogs with adequate body condition and clean coat, in secure enclosures with adequate water supply and thermal comfort. In addition, most dogs were kept in collective enclosures and in open environments, with low noise levels and showing more positive, desirable emotions in adoption. As negative aspects, 58% (96/165) of the precincts evaluated had inadequate or inexistent beds and 30% (50/165) of the enclosures kept dogs individually, being indicators of a low degree of well-being for the dogs involved. In addition, no shelter provided elderly dog rations and 81% (13/16) of the shelters neglected the diagnosis and treatment of pain. Although most shelters present more positive than negative points in their evaluation, shelter management should always aim at correcting critical points that compromise animal welfare.(AU)

Animals may be eventually collected by public shelters in Brazil and the shelter's environment directly affects their quality of life. This work studied relevant characteristics of the physical facilities and the management of establishments liked to the municipal public power that shelter dogs, cats and horses in the state of Paraná. It was registered 17 municipalities with 20 shelters, of which 18 participated in the research. All the municipalities maintained dogs, seven (41.2%) maintained cats and eight (47.1%) kept horses. All the shelters had social housing; two (11.8%) of dogs and five (71.5%) of cats housing one animal per pen; four (22,2%) there were pens that didn't have visualization for outside; 11 (64.7%) had cleaning correctly; five (29.4%) shelters that sheltered dogs and one (14.3%) that sheltered cats didn't have area for quarantine and isolation restroom; beds were available in 15 (88.2%), five (71.4%) and one (12.5%) of the pens of dogs, cats and horses, respectively. Animal shelters in Paraná should ban pens isolation, include one bedding per animal and socialize the animals. In addition, there is an opportunity to increase the animal welfare through improvements in animal management and sanitary management, which do not depend on the housing improvements.(AU)

RESUMO

A male Brazilian Fila dog was referred because of a perineal orifice with urine stream during micturition. To determine the extent of the accessory channel, a contrasted retrograde urethrocystography was performed. A surgical correction was undertaken. Histological study showed the presence of the urethral channel lined by multilayer transitional epithelium. The patient recovered well and there was no evidence of complications one year after surgery.

The use of laparoscopic surgery for the removal of cystic calculi in three dogs was reported. Three trocars were used, one in the ventral midline (10mm) and the others in the right (10mm) and left (5mm) flanks. The calculi were removed and the bladder was sutured with intracorporeal technique in two layers, a simple continuous pattern and interrupted or continuous Lembert pattern. No postoperative complications were observed. One patient had a recurrence of urolithiasis, attributed to inadequate conservative treatment and to the lack of an appropriate diet. It was submitted to another similar videolaparoscopic cystotomy without complication. The proposed technique is appropriate and an alternative to conventional cystotomy for treatment of canine vesical urolithiasis.

A Miniature Pinscher bitch was treated by the owner with enrofloxacin at dose of 50 mg/kg, once a day, for two days (daily dose rate 10 times greater than prescribed). Physical examination showed depression, lumbar cifosis, hipotermia, pale mucosa, dispneia, drewling, vomiting and anuria, followed by respiratory failure, seizures, and coma. Symptomatic treatment was performed, and the urinary flow returned to normal in 12 hours, and seizures were controlled. However, the animal stayed in coma, and died 72 hours after the beginning of the treatment. Acute renal and hepatic failure, and hipovolemic shock, compatible with enrofloxacin intoxication, were observed through necropsia and histopatology.

RESUMO

In this paper, the seasonal abundance of 25 sandfly species (1 of the Brumptomyia genus and 24 of the Lutzomyia genus) found at P1V5, municipal district of Buriticupu, Maranhão State, is discussed. The capture was carried out from 18:00 P.M. to 6:00 A.M., once a month, from January to December 1996. CDC light traps were set up in the forest, in the peri and intradomicile environments. Five species were only found in the rainy season (January to June), being represented by one or two individuals; eight species occurred only in the dry season (July to December) and eleven species appeared in both seasons. The most frequent species in the dry period were: L. whitmani (26.3%), L. serrana (23%), L. choti (22.8%), L. evandroi (7.5%), L. longipalpis (5.8%), L. termitophila (3.3%), L. shannoni (3%) and L. migonei (2.5%). In the rainy season, L. whitmani was the prevailing species (74%), followed by L. termitophila (4%), L. umbratilis (3.4%), L. serrana (2.8%), L. evandroi (2,8%) and L. claustrei (2.4%). L. whitmani was thought to be an annual species, occurring in the entire year of study. The others species, with exception to L. serrana and L. evandroi, showed a seasonal, punctual or peripheric pattern.

RESUMO

In this study the diversity of the species and relative abundance of the sand flies in the Amazonian community of Lagoas, in Buriticupu, Maranhão State, was determined. The study consisted of adult sandflies captured with CD light-traps, Shannon-trap and manual aspiration tube, between 18 PM and 6 AM, once a month, from December/95 to January/97, in a forest fragment and in the domestic environment (peri and intra). In all, 9,393 specimens were captured (4,302 males and 5,140 females) distributed among 38 species (1 Brumptomyia and 37 Lutzomyia). The diversity and abundance of species was higher in the forest, followed by the peri and intra. The predominance in the wild ambient is a consequence of the potentialities found in the remaining fragments of the forest which have survived the lumber yard exploitation and agricultural activities. In the forest environment Lutzomyia whitmani (64.9%), L. migonei (27%) and L. serrana (3.6%) were the most frequent species. In the peri and intra domicile L. evandroi predominated (55.4% and 97.9%). The species, L. whitmani (33.4%) and L. migonei (6.4%), were important in the peri domicile. The peridomestic habit of 7.7% of the sand flies showed the greatest epidemiologic importance, due to the existence of patients with leishmaniasis ulcers, who believe they were infected near their habitations.

RESUMO

Myxosarcoma is an unusual neoplasm in the dog, most seen in the skin, and seldom in the heart and in the liver. The authors describe a case of a 5-years old mongrel dog showing abdominal distension, weakness, and decreased appetite. An exploratory celiotomy showed a massive non-encapsulated nodular tumour, adhered on the mesentery, measuring 30cm in diameter. Histopatology identified the tumour as a myxosarcoma. There is not previous record of mesenteric myxosarcoma

RESUMO

This study lists 32 species of sand flies, 1 of them belonging to the genus Brumptomyia and 31 to the genus Lutzomyia, distributed among the following subgenera: Psychodopygus (6), Nyssomyia (5), Pressatia (3), Evandromyia (2), Psathyromyia (2), Sciopemyia (2), Lutzomyia (1), Micropygomyia (1), Viannamyia (1), and the groups Oswaldoi (5) and Migonei (3). The sand flies were captured in the wild (forest) and in peridomicile (pigpen, hen house and stable) and intradomicile (bedroom) areas from 06:00 PM to 06:00 AM, once a month, for 4 years on the Island of São Luis, Maranhão. All species sampled were present in the forest. Among them, 16 were found in the peridomicile, while 11 were found inside the houses. A total of 22,581 specimens were captured, 65.1% of them in the peridomicile, 17.5% in the forest and 17.4% in the intradomicile. The most common species was Lutzomyia longipalpis (66.4% of the captured specimens), followed by Lutzomyia whitmani (24%) and Lutzomyia evandroi (5.9%). The remaining 29 species represented 3.7% of the total sample.
