RESUMO

AIM: To study mechanisms of action of natural magnetic field of the Earth on arterial pressure (AP) and melatonin production in patients with essential hypertension (EH) stage II. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Clinical, laboratory and device investigations covered 52 men with EH stage II (mean age 42 +/- 0.92 years) and 11 healthy men (mean age 23 +/- 1.46 years). Mean 24-hour, mean daytime, mean night systolic and diastolic pressures, 24-h index, time hypertensive index, standard deviation were registered. Melatonin was measured in the urine by radioimmunoassay. Geomagnetic situation was assessed by K-index (quiet--under 15, disturbed--15-25, magnetic storm--above 25). RESULTS: In hypertensive patients AP grew with growth of geomagnetic activity. In normal subjects AP remained normal. The 24-h rhythm of AP variability in hypertensives was normal. Magnetic storm affected melatonin production in EH patients noticeably: night and daytime production of melatonin was low. In normal subjects night melatonin production was high. CONCLUSION: AH stage II patients respond to magnetic storm with maladaptation, i.e. a rise in AP and low melatonin production.

RESUMO

The goals of this investigation were to study the influence of geomagnetic activity on platelet aggregation, blood coagulation in venous blood. The geophysical information was provided by the Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, Ionosphere and Radio Waves Propagation Russian Academy of Sciences. The most significant changes were obtained in increased platelets aggregation, blood coagulation during increased geomagnetic activity. All these effects may cause the development of angina pectoris. The using of acetyl acetylsalicylic enable decreased the negative effect of geomagnetic disturbances on patients with ischemic heart disease.

RESUMO

The massif of data about acute coronary pathology and deaths of Central Railway Hospital (Moscow) is analysed during 1992-1993. The geomagnetic storms are characterised by their intensity and duration. The quantitative values of biotropic of the geomagnetic storms are given to different diseases. It is shown that during geomagnetic storms the number of cases of myocardial infraction increase to 2.5 times, the acute cerebral insult to 2 times, the angina pectoris and cardiac arrhythmia to 1.5 times and deaths to 1.2 times in regarding to the periods without the geomagnetic storms.

RESUMO

The functional characteristics variations during the magnetic storms were observed in both the healthy humans and in patients with cardio-vascular diseases as well as in cosmonauts at SOYUZ spacecraft and MIR station. These characteristics revealed a nonspecific adaptive stress reaction, which should be accompanied by the variations in the stress-hormone production rate. The neurohumoral regulation of the organism functions during the geomagnetic storms in a group of patients with cardio-vascular pathology and in a control group of healthy individuals were studied. The magnetic storm effect characterised of both the sick and healthy examines was the violated ratio of glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids, namely increase of cortisone secretion (adrenal cortex hormone), as well as some tendency to the activation of sympathoadrenal system. Our investigations revealed also a suppressed production of melatonin (the pineal gland hormone) during the geomagnetic storm. These results are not in contradictions with the functional characteristics violation by the magnetic storms and correspond to the existence of adaptive stress reaction of the human organism to the geomagnetic field disturbances.

RESUMO

It was shown by two independent methods that there is a certain correlation between the number of aviation accidents and heliogeophysical factors. The statistical and spectral analyses of time series of heliogeomagnetic factors and the number of aviation accidents in 1989-1995 showed that, of 216 accidents, 58% are related to sudden geomagnetic storms. A similar relation was revealed for aviation catastrophes (64% out of 86 accidents) and emergencies (54% out of 130 accidents) that coincided in time with heliogeomagnetic storms. General periodicities of the series were revealed by the method of spectral analysis, namely, cycles of 30, 42, 46, 64, 74, 83, 99, 115, 143, 169, 339 days, which confirms the causative relation between the number of aviation accidents and heliogeomagnetic factors. It is assumed that some aviation accidents that coincided in time with geomagnetic storms, are due to changes in professional abilities of pilots that were in the zone of storms.

RESUMO

It was hypothesized based on previous laboratory observations and theoretical concepts that astronauts working at the "Mir" station under zero gravity conditions exhibit enhanced sensitivity to geomagnetic disturbances. The result of studies made it possible to reveal the dynamics of changes in cardiovascular characteristics separately in the main phase and the phase of storm restoration. A similar dynamics of cardiac activity was observed in experimental rabbits during geomagnetic storms.

RESUMO

A complicated nonlinear biological system should be in principal more sensitive to the external factors activity including geomagnetic disturbances. The complex of experimental studies based on this hypothesis were done simultaneously in two hospitals in Moscow as well as in condition of space orbital station, where just above-mentioned conditions are the case. This studies revealed that the reaction of astronauts to the geomagnetic storm involves a mobilization and activation of all centers of the sympathetic link, and as a result,--a significant increase and stabilization of pulse (heart rate), decrease of the heart rhythm variability and the power of respiratory waves. This nonspecific adaptation stress-reaction was accompanied by variations in the regulation of vascular tonus which is correspond to specific adaptation stress-reaction. The results of clinical examinations of healthy people and patients with the ischemic heart disease lead us to the conclusion that the reaction to the geomagnetic disturbances are mainly of one type and manifests themselves in deterioration of the physiological status, rheologic blood characteristics and the heart rate disturbances similar to ones observed in astronautes.

RESUMO

Emergency ambulance statistical data accumulated in Moscow during March 1983-October 1984 have been analyzed. Diurnal numbers of urgent hospitalization of patients in connection with suicides, mental disorders, myocardial infarction, defects of cerebrum vessels and arterial and venous diseases have been examined. Intensity and duration of planetary geomagnetic storms were used as magnetic activity indices. Comparison of geomagnetic and medical data rows has shown that at least 75% of magnetic storms caused increase in hospitalization of patients with the above-mentioned diseases on 30-80% at average. The dependence of the value of biotropic effect on the duration of effect and intensity of magnetic storm is observed.

RESUMO

The obtained results clearly evidence for the influence of magnetic disturbances and storms on melatonin production in patients with ischemic heart disease. Improvement of 24-hour rhythm of melatonin secretion during the period of magnetic disturbances says in favour of this influence while an overall fall of melatonin production during magnetic disturbances and storms is an apparent negative factor.

RESUMO

A new class of diagnostic magnetometric devices--magnetic storm indicators was created at the IZMIRAN. Magnetic storm indicators have the following advantages: small weight and dimensions, efficiency, low power consumption and low prices. Magnetic storm indicators could be used in medicine, in geophysics and for special purposes. Magnetic storm indicators could be used to determine and indicate the magnetic storm amplitudes in any region of the Earth in real time scale. In the paper we summarized the results of experimental works in clinics and shown a principle possibility of magnetometric equipment application for magnetic storm registration under conditions of industrial noises in urban environment.

RESUMO

A total of 80 patients with ischemic heart diseases (men-47, women-33) were followed up daily during 2-3 weeks. We studied capillary flow in the cuticle above the nail (eponichium) with TV-capillaroscope, allowed to conduct prolonged studies. We evaluated capillary indices for perivascular edema, erythrocytes aggregation, blood velocity. Microcirculations data were compared daily values of geomagnetic activity (A-index), three-hour-range indices (K) and atmospheric pressure. In the first day magnetic storms pathological changes of capillary flow were detected in 71.5% patients with acute myocardial infarction (men-73.7%, women-69.2%). We could see appearance of perivascular edema, red blood cell aggregation, delay and slowing down capillary flow. Similar changes were detected in patient with angina pectoris in 64.8% (men-73.3%, women-56.3%). Number patients with ischemic heart diseases reacted upon geomagnetic disturbances exceed more then 2.5 times quantity patients, who react upon change of atmospheric pressure.
