RESUMO

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) aerogel-based scaffolds were obtained from physical PLLA gels containing cyclopentanone (CPO) or methyl benzoate (BzOMe) molecules. An innovative single step method of solvent extraction, using supercritical CO2, was used to achieve cylindrical monolithic aerogels. The pore distribution and size, analyzed by SEM microscopy, were found to be related to the crystalline forms present in the physical nodes that hold the gels together, the stable α'-form and the metastable co-crystalline ε-form, detected in the PLLA/BzOMe and PLLA/CPO aerogels, respectively. A higher mechanical compressive strength was found for the PLLA/CPO aerogels, which exhibit a more homogenous porosity. In vitro biocompatibility tests also indicated that monolithic PLLA/CPO aerogels exhibited greater cell viability than PLLA/BzOMe aerogels. An improved biocompatibility of PLLA/CPO monolithic aerogels was finally observed by coating the surface of the aerogels with polydopamine (PDA) obtained by the in situ polymerization of dopamine (DA). The synergistic effect of biodegradable polyester (PLLA) and the biomimetic interface (PDA) makes this new 3D porous scaffold, with porosity and mechanical properties that are tunable based on the solvent used in the preparation process, attractive for tissue engineering applications.

RESUMO

Snail mucus is an attractive natural substance, which is increasingly used in cosmetic creams and syrups thanks to its emollient, moisturizing, protective and reparative properties. The aim of the present study was to explore the physicochemical properties of chitosan-based films added with snail mucus extracted from Helix Aspersa Muller. To this aim, chitosan films at different content of snail mucus were fabricated by simple solvent casting technique. The results of X-ray diffraction analyses, tensile mechanical tests, Infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetry demonstrated that snail mucus addition strongly modifies the properties of chitosan films. In particular, it acted like a plasticizer enhancing films extensibility up to ten times and strongly improving their water barrier and bioadhesion properties, with a trend depending on Snail mucus content. Furthermore, it provides the films with antibacterial properties and enhanced cytocompatibility, yielding materials with tailored properties for specific requirements.

RESUMO

The rotational spectrum of the 1:1 complex formic acid-isopropylformate (FA-IPF) has been first observed when trying to assign the pulsed jet Fourier transform microwave (FTMW) spectrum of the adduct formic acid-2-propanol, by expanding a binary mixture of HCOOH and 2-propanol in He. The strong FTMW spectrum of isopropylformate, formed by the esterification reaction, was observed instead. However, when HCOOH was in excess in the binary mixture, it was possible to observe and assign the rotational spectrum of FA-IPF. Later on a much intense spectrum of FA-IPF was obtained, when combining FA with IPF. Finally, the spectra of five isotopologues of the most stable isomer of formic acid-isopropylformate have been observed by means of rotational spectroscopy in supersonic expansion. Some of them, HCOOH-(CH3)2CHOOCD and HCOOH-(CH3)2CDOOCH have been synthesized in the MW cavity by using DCOOH or (CH3)2CDOH as precursors in the esterification process. In the observed isomer of the complex, the two subunits are linked to each other by a standard O-H···O and a weak C-H···O hydrogen bond. The dissociation energy has been estimated to be 34.1 kJ·mol-1.
