RESUMO
Back pain is a typical symptom of abdominal aortic aneurysm. Symptoms of root compression may also be present if the aneurysm has caused changes to the vertebral column. A typical case is presented. The condition is life-threatening and requires vascular reconstruction.

In a prospective study, we randomly allocated 39 patients with isolated fractures of the lower two-thirds of the ulnar shaft to treatment either by a prefabricated functional brace or a long-arm cast. Significantly better wrist function and a higher percentage of satisfied patients were found in the braced group. Thirteen patients returned to employment while still wearing the brace but only one was able to work in a cast.

The effect of naproxen on heterotopic ossification after total hip replacement was studied in a randomized, double-blind trial. Twenty-eight patients received 250 mg naproxen thrice daily for 4 weeks postoperatively starting on the morning of the operation while 27 control patients received a placebo. Three months after the operation, 13 patients in the control group had heterotopic ossification compared with 4 patients in the group that received naproxen; and after 1 year, the figures were 15 and 4, respectively (P less than 0.01). Three control patients had severe ossifications. We conclude that naproxen given for 4 weeks is sufficient to decrease the incidence of heterotopic ossification after cemented total hip replacement.

One hundred fractures of the neck of the femur, Garden stage III or IV, were treated with Gouffon pins during a three year period. Seventy-nine were followed from 24 to 52 months. Union occurred in 59 fractures. Eighteen fractures did not unite and 2 became redisplaced within the first week. Avascular necrosis was noted on radiographs in 14 of the 59 united fractures. A higher pin migration rate was found in Garden stage IV fractures, and in the failures.
