RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Software applications executed on a smart-phone or mobile device ("Apps") are increasingly used by oncologists in their daily work. A comprehensive critical review was conducted on Apps specifically designed for Radiation Oncology, which aims to provide scientific support for these tools and to guide users in choosing the most suited to their needs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in mobile platforms, iOS and Android, returning 157 Apps. Excluding those whose purpose did not match the scope of the study, 31 Apps were methodically analyzed by the following items: Objective Features, List of Functionalities, Consistency in Outcomes and Usability. RESULTS: Apps are presented in groups of features, as Dose Calculators (7 Apps), Clinical Calculators (4), Tools for Staging (7), Multipurpose (7) and Others (6). Each App is presented with the list of attributes and a brief comment. A short summary is provided at the end of each group. DISCUSSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS: There are numerous Apps with useful tools at the disposal of radiation oncologists. The most advisable Apps do not match the more expensive. Three all-in-one apps seem advisable above all: RadOnc Reference (in English), Easy Oncology (in German) and iOncoR (in Spanish). Others recommendations are suggested for specific tasks: dose calculators, treatment-decision and staging.

RESUMO

We propose a procedure for characterizing fabrication deviations within a chip and among different chips in a wafer in silicon photonics technology. In particular, independent measurements of SOI thickness and waveguide width deviations can be mapped through the wafer, allowing a precise and non-destructive characterization of how these variations are distributed along the surface of the wafer. These deviations are critical for most wavelength-dependent integrated devices, like microring resonators, filters, etc. We also show that the technique allows for the characterization of proximity effects.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To delineate the clinical target volume (CTV) in low dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy for prostate cancer, American Brachytherapy Society (ABS) recommends a CTV = prostate. ESTRO advocates a CTV = prostate + 3 mm excluding rectum and many authors use and recommend other different CTVs. This study aims to: (1) evaluate the appropriateness of these recommendations and (2) test the applicability of seed distributions on the different CTVs and contrast the dosimetric differences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-eight patients treated with (125)I seeds (dose 145 Gy; CTV = prostate) were studied. We established for every patient: (1) risk of extraprostatic extension (EPE), (2) adequacy of original plan to an extended CTV with 3 mm-margin (3) a new planning and seed distribution for this CTV and (4) comparison of dosimetry of both plans. RESULTS: Mean risk of EPE was 28.46 %. Original plan, when applied to the extended CTV, resulted in unsatisfactory dosimetry. A plan was generated for the 98 extended CTVs meeting all dosimetric specifications. CONCLUSIONS: The risk of EPE is high enough to consider a 3 mm-margin around prostate necessary for all cases. A CTV = prostate + 3 mm except rectum as ESTRO recommends is feasible and would adjust planning to the most probable extension of the tumor.

RESUMO

We experimentally demonstrate the use of cyclic pulse coding for distributed strain and temperature measurements in hybrid Raman/Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) optical fiber sensors. The highly integrated proposed solution effectively addresses the strain/temperature cross-sensitivity issue affecting standard BOTDA sensors, allowing for simultaneous meter-scale strain and temperature measurements over 10 km of standard single mode fiber using a single narrowband laser source only.

RESUMO

A cyclic pulse coding technique is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for fast implementation of long-range Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA). The proposed technique allows for accurate temperature and strain measurements with meter-scale spatial resolution over kilometers of standard single-mode fiber, with subsecond measurement times.

RESUMO

The nonlinear response of amorphous silicon waveguides is reported and compared to silicon-on-insulator (SOI) samples. The real part of the nonlinear coefficient γ is measured by four-wave-mixing and the imaginary part of γ is characterized by measuring the nonlinear loss at different peak powers. The combination of both results yields a two-photon-absorption figure of merit of 4.9, which is more than 7 times higher than for the SOI samples. Time-resolved measurements and simulations confirm the measured nonlinear coefficient γ and show the absence of slow free-carrier effects versus ns free-carrier lifetimes in the SOI samples.

RESUMO

We present the characterization of the ultrafast nonlinear dynamics of a CMOS-compatible horizontal-slot waveguide with silicon nanocrystals. Results are compared to strip silicon waveguides, and modeled with nonlinear split-step calculations. The extracted parameters show that the slot waveguide has weaker carrier effects and better nonlinear figure-of-merit than the strip waveguides.

RESUMO

We present an experimental technique to characterize backscattering in silicon microring resonators, together with a simple analytical model that reproduces the experimental results. The model can extract all the key parameters of an add-drop-type resonator, which are the loss, both coupling coefficients and backscattering. We show that the backscattering effect strongly affects the resonance shape, and that consecutive resonances of the same ring can have very different backscattering parameters.

RESUMO

An application of the ROC statistical method is described on a sample of 161 patients who underwent hepatic gammagraphy and biopsies obtained by laparoscopy, and of whom 90 were found to have hepatic cirrhosis according to pathological anatomy. Five decision thresholds have been established in the elaboration of the gammagraphic diagnosis of cirrhosis. The true positive fraction (TPF) and false positive fraction (FPF) of these five thresholds are shown on an ordinate axis and an ROC curve is obtained. By means of a simplified cost-benefit analysis the optimal point of operation for this type of diagnosis is determined on this curve, according to which the diagnosis of cirrhosis should be considered positive when alterations in the size of the liver and distribution of the isotope in the liver are found simultaneously with splenomegaly.
