RESUMO

This review article explores the potential contribution of Japan's experience in addressing rapid aging in Asia with a specific focus on dementia care. As Japan is a frontrunner in terms of aging society, we consider valuable insights and lessons from Japanese policy history and reflect on its contribution. The World Health Organization, Regional Office for the Western Pacific Regional Action Plan on Healthy Ageing for the Western Pacific was compared with the Japanese "Outline for Promotion of Dementia Policies". The following five issues were discussed: i) improving awareness of dementia and community engagement in Japan from a mutual aid perspective; ii) social activities for prevention of dementia at the local level; iii) human resources for medical and long-term care; iv) local coordinators for old people care at home to evaluate the needs for care and tailor the care-plan on an individual basis; v) research and development of long-term care products. Given these factors, it is important to address the aging society through a combined cross-sectoral approach, including policy, research, development of care products, community, and education of care workers. Aging population measures in Japan do not provide a definitive answer, which prompts the consideration of better solutions derived from Japan's trial and error. The aging rate of 7%, 14%, and 21% are commonly used in international comparisons as indicators of the speed of the aging process, but before this 7% is reached, policies tailored to each country should be considered.

RESUMO

The Indonesia health care services require knowledgeable and skilled nurses as professional service providers, especially in a gerontic nursing area. Moreover, widening the gap between academic and clinical practice is also an issue, which affects the care service quality. In these circumstances, the project to enhance the educational skills of nursing lecturers and clinical nurse preceptors in gerontic nursing practice was started in 2020. Japanese nursing education experts provided guidance on the principle theory of nursing practice in basic nursing education and conducted workshops to develop nursing practice materials for 10 Indonesian trainees. The project provided 3 webinars for more than 100 Indonesian nursing lecturers and preceptors each time, 18 workshops and developed 2 virtual reality (VR) materials, 8 supervisions of the trial class and 5 lectures onsite and online. This study aimed to clarify the effects of the project evaluated in the process and its impact using a questionnaire survey and interviews conducted. The results of the questionnaire survey for students showed that 20% of their knowledge and skills in gerontic nursing, increased and the extent of understanding and satisfaction was high. Lecurers and preceptors perceived improvement in their teaching skills, especially in theoretical thinking and evidence-based teaching methods. Notably, "the evaluation from others" would be a facilitating factor of the project. The project effects were clarified and achieved the goal and objectives of the project.

RESUMO

AIM: Develop a proxy evaluation questionnaire for patients' family members and nurses to evaluate dignity expectations and satisfaction of patients with dementia. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHOD: A proxy questionnaire draft was prepared with 30 items on expectations for dignity and 23 items on satisfaction with dignity. And administered to three paired groups: 81 older patients with intact cognitive function, 75 family members, and 77 nurses. RESULTS: 18 of 30 items and 21 of 23 were correlated between patients and their family members' responses on dignity expectations and satisfaction, respectively. When limited to nurses with clinical experience of ≥20 years, there were significant correlations between patients' and nurses' responses (p < .05). Exploratory factor analysis of patient's responses to significantly correlated items extracted 3 factors with 13 items of expectations for dignity but no factors of satisfaction with dignity. Using a questionnaire provides insight for proxy evaluation of expectations for dignity.
