RESUMO
Strontium 89, a radiopharmaceutical, has proved effective in treating pain associated with multiple osteoblastic bony metastasis from prostate or breast cancer. The drug is given intravenously in an outpatient setting. Pain relief may be noted within 1 to 2 weeks and may last for several weeks or months. Radiosensitizers such as idoxuridine incorporate into the DNA and increase the susceptibility of the cancer cell to radiation damage. Hypoxic cell sensitizers (such as metronidazole, misonidazole, SR 2508, and Ro-038799) increase oxygen to the cancer hypoxic cells and promote damage of the DNA, thus preventing cell repair.

Multiple solid tumors are unresponsive to chemotherapy drug levels that are given by systemic administration. Regional chemotherapy administration provides a higher drug concentration at and/or near the tumor site, thus achieving a higher tumor cell kill. Intravenous therapy nurses are involved in the access of the multiple devices, infusion of the chemotherapy drugs, and monitoring of the patient for the duration of the regional therapy. This article will provide a review of regional chemotherapy via intraarterial, intrathecal, and intraperitoneal routes. Nursing management will focus on the specifics of drug delivery and the care of the patient receiving regional chemotherapy.

A high pressure liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method has been developed which is fast, simple, specific, and reliable over a wide range of sugar concentrations in a variety of food matrices. With few exceptions, sample preparation is simple, requiring only a water-ethanol extraction, followed by a rapid mini-column cleanup before injection into the HPLC system. The majority of samples can be prepared for analysis within 1--1 1/2 hr, and the following sugars are separated in less than 45 min: fructose, glucose, sucrose, maltose, lactose, melibioals, chocolate products, chocolate sirups, cookies, health food products, molasses, preserves, processed fruits, and soy protein products.
