AIM: To investigate the effects of Contractubex® (Cx) on peripheral nerve regeneration and scar formation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A surgical procedure involving sciatic nerve incision in 24 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats followed by epineural suturing was performed. In weeks 4 and 12 following surgery, macroscopic, histological, functional, and electromyographic examinations of the sciatic nerve were conducted. RESULTS: No significant difference was found between the Cx group and the control group in terms of sciatic function index (SFI) and distal latency results at week 4 (p > 0.05). However, significant improvements in the Cx group were observed in SFI amplitudes and nerve action potentials at week 12 (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively). Significant improvements were found in the amplitudes of nerve action potentials in the treatment group after weeks 4 and 12 (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001, respectively). Macroscopically and histopathologically, epidural fibrosis decreased (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001, respectively). For both measurement times, the treatment group had significantly higher numbers of axons (week 4, p < 0.05; week 12, p < 0.001), and the treatment group had better results regarding its axon area (weeks 4 and 12, p < 0.001) and myelin thickness (weeks 4 and 12, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Cx, which is applied topically in peripheral nerve injury, affects axonal regeneration and axonal maturation positively and reduces the functional loss.

AIM: To analyse postoperative meningitis (POM) after craniotomy, and to compare the clinical characteristics, treatment outcomes and mortality rates of POM that were caused by Acinetobacter spp. or other possible causes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, POM cases in our hospital between 2008 and 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. Cases were divided into three groups; Acinetobacter spp. meningitis (case group), non-Acinetobacter bacterial meningitis (control group 1) and culture negative meningitis (control group 2). Demographic, clinical, laboratory features, treatment modalities and mortality rates were compared between case and control groups. RESULTS: A total of 112 patients with POM were included in the study. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture results were negative in 50 (44.6%) patients; bacteria were isolated from CSF of 62 (55.3%) patients. Acinetobacter spp. was isolated from 28 (45%) patients, while bacteria other than Acinetobacter spp. were detected in 34 (55%) patients. No significant differences were observed between case and control groups in terms of age, gender, comorbidity and operation type. For the case group, change of treatment according to culture result was significantly different from control groups (p < 0.001). Mortality was 55.6% in the case group, 24.2% in control group 1 (p=0.013), and 24% in control group 2 (p=0.006). In multivariate analysis, isolation of Acinetobacter spp. from CSF culture [OR < sub > adj < /sub > 5.2, 95% confidence interval (CI):1.2-22.0, p=0.026] and inappropriate treatment (OR < sub > adj < /sub > 15.7, 95%CI:3.6-68.9, p < 0.001) were determined to be independent risk factors for mortality. CONCLUSION: Postoperative meningitis, especially caused by Acinetobacter spp., and its inappropriate empirical treatment are associated with high mortality.

CONTEXT: Internal rigid fixation provides immediate stability of the occipito-cervical (OC) junction for treatment of instability; however, in current practice, the optimal OC junction stabilization method is debatable. AIMS: The aim of this study to test the safety and efficacy of a newly designed modified inside-outside occipito-cervical (MIOOC) plate system for the treatment of instability. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: This was a feasibility study of MIOCC plate system. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Five male and four female patients with OC instability were treated using MIOOC plate system. Stabilization rate, safety, and efficacy were evaluated radiologically and clinically. RESULTS: Mean age of the patients was 35 ± 11 (range: 22-58) years. Etiology of OC instability included trauma, neoplasm, congenital abnormalities, and iatrogenic. The fusion levels ranged from occiput-C3 to occiput-C6. Mean follow-up duration was 22 ± 10 (range: 6-46) months. There were neither complication nor was there any need for plate revision or screw pullout. Mortality occurred in one patient due to primary malignancy at 6 months; otherwise, no morbidity was observed. During the follow-up, no recurrent subluxation or newly developed instability at adjacent levels occurred. All patients showed a satisfactory union at the most recent follow-up examination. CONCLUSIONS: These preliminary results suggest that the MIOCC plate system is a useful and safe method for providing immediate internal stability of the OC junction. Using a multi-piece plate design in this plate system provided easy implantation and a better interface between plate and OC bones. Further, clinical studies and long-term results are needed to determine the reliability of the MIOOC plate system.

OBJECTIVES: Chiari malformation type 1 (CM-1) is associated with cough headache, intracranial hypertension, cerebellar and spinal cord symptoms/signs. Herniated cerebellar tonsil length (HCTL) is widely used radiological parameter to determine the severity of CM-1, but with limited utility due to its weak correlation with some clinico-radiological findings. In this study, we aimed to evaluate a novel, practical parameter (cervico-medullary compression ratio; "CMCR") for its relationship with clinico-radiological findings in CM-1. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-five adult patients (17 F, 18 M) with CM-1 were included in this retrospective study. Head CT and craniospinal MR images were assessed. CMCR was calculated as the ratio of herniated cerebellar tonsil surface area to foramen magnum surface area, and HCTL was measured. These two parameters were correlated with clinical and radiological findings. RESULTS: The mean CMCR was 0.60 ± 0.15 and mean HCTL was 8.91 ± 3.4 mm with no significant difference between gender and age groups for both parameters. For cough headache (0.64 ± 0.14 vs 0.52 ± 0.15, p = 0.043) and syringomyelia (0.67 ± 0.11 vs 0.56 ± 0.16, p = 0.039), only CMCR; for intracranial hypertension (CMCR: 0.64 ± 0.14 vs 0.55 ± 0.16, p = 0.049; HCTL: 9.66 ± 3.59 mm vs 7.79 ± 3.03 mm; p = 0.045) and cerebellar symptoms (CMCR: 0.65 ± 0.14 vs 0.54 ± 0.16, p = 0.048; HCTL: 10.4 ± 3.5 mm vs 7.4 ± 2.8 mm, p = 0.041), both CMCR and HTCL were significantly different between patients with and without respective findings. However, neither CMCR nor HTCL was different between patients with and without spinal cord symptoms and hydrocephalus. CONCLUSION: CMCR is a superior numerical parameter than HCTL for the assessment of clinical severity in CM-1 cases and needs further validation with larger studies.

OBJECTIVE: Preserving the ligamentum flavum (LF) during lumbar spine surgery can help to limit the extent of postoperative epidural fibrosis (EF), which is a potential cause of persistent leg pain. We present a retrospective analysis of microdiscectomy with preservation of the LF to evaluate the effects of the two LF mobilizing techniques (reflecting inferiorly or medially vs. removing completely) on EF and clinical outcomes. METHODS: Microdiscectomy was performed through a unilateral laminotomy in 93 patients (52 male, 41 female; mean age, 46 years; range, 25-65 years) with L3-L4 (n = 3), L4-L5 (n = 40), and L5-S1 (n = 50) lumbar disc herniation. Patients whose LF was removed were assigned to group 1 (n=42), and patients whose LF was preserved by mobilizing it medially (n = 31) or inferiorly (n = 20) were assigned to groups 2 and 3, respectively. Follow-up visual analog scale (VAS) scores and magnetic resonance images were evaluated. RESULTS: EF scores, particularly for the anterior quadrants, were significantly higher in group 1 than in groups 2 (P = 0.012) and 3 (P = 0.001). Likewise, postoperative VAS scores in group 1 were also significantly higher than in groups 2 (P = 0.009) and 3 (P = 0.044). CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate that 1) preserving the LF during lumbar microdiscectomy reduces the formation of postoperative EF and improves clinical outcomes; 2) EF in the anterior, rather than the posterior epidural space, is correlated with clinical results; and 3) the ligament mobilizing technique used should be individually tailored on the basis of the features of disc herniation.

BACKGROUND: The development of secondary brain injury via oxidative stress after traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a well-known entity. Consequently, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of omeprazole (OM) on rat model of TBI. METHODS: A total of 24 male rats were used and divided into 4 groups as follows; control, trauma, OM, and methylprednisolone (MP). The trauma, OM, and MP groups were subjected to closed-head contusive weight-drop injuries. Rats received treatment with saline, OM, or MP, respectively. All the animals were sacrificed at 24 hours after trauma and brain tissues were extracted. The oxidant/antioxidant parameters (malondialdehyde, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, nitric oxide) and caspase-3 in the cerebral tissue were analyzed, and histomorphologic evaluation of the cerebral tissue was performed. RESULTS: Levels of MDA and activity of caspase-3 were significantly reduced in the OM and MP groups compared with the trauma group. Glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase levels were increased both in the OM and MP groups compared with the trauma group. The pathology scores were statistically lower in the OM and MP groups than the trauma group. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present study showed that OM was as effective as MP in protecting brain from oxidative stress, and apoptosis in the early phase of TBI.

In this report, the authors present an unusual case of a 10-year-old child who suffered a severe headache and rhinorrhea that occurred as a result of fencing foil sports injury via trans-nasal-trans-sphenoidal (TNTS) pathway. Following trauma, the child had shown neurological symptoms such a pupil dilatation, change in consciousness and mild hemiparesia. Imaging demonstrated destruction of bone structures including posterior wall of sphenoid sinus and antero-superior part of sella turcica, and also a contusion at right thalamic region. For treatment of rhinorrhea lumbar drainage system (LDS) had planted in order to relieve cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage. After the treatment, the patient had fully recovered without any need of further surgical intervention. CSF leakage had prevented and neurological symptoms were completely treated. This case represents the first report of brain injury via TNTS pathway in a sports practice. Diagnosis, clinic follow-up and treatment options of this rare accidental sports injury are discussed.

BACKGROUND: The development of secondary brain injury via oxidative stress after traumatic brain injury (TBI) is well known. Decorin (DC) inactivates transforming growth factor ß1, complement system, and tumor necrosis factor α, which are related to oxidative stress and apoptosis. Consequently, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of DC on TBI. METHODS: A total of 24 male rats were used and divided into 4 groups as follows; control, trauma, DC, and methylprednisolone (MP). The trauma, DC, and MP groups were subjected to closed-head contusive weight-drop injuries. Rats received treatment with intraperitoneal saline, DC, or MP, respectively. All the animals were killed at the 24th hour after trauma and brain tissues were extracted. The oxidant/antioxidant parameters (malondialdehyde, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and NO) and caspase 3 in the cerebral tissue were analyzed, and histomorphologic evaluation of the cerebral tissue was performed. RESULTS: Levels of malondialdehyde, NO, and activity of caspase 3 were significantly reduced, and in addition glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase levels were increased in the DC and MP groups compared with the trauma group. The pathology scores and the percentage of degenerated neurons were statistically lower in the DC and MP groups than in the trauma group. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present study showed that DC inactivates transforming growth factor ß1 and protects the brain tissue and neuronal cells after TBI.

Objective Chiari malformation type-I (CM-1) is described radiographically as a simple displacement of the cerebellar tonsils at least 5 mm below the foramen magnum (FM). If CM-1 exists due to hyperostosis of the cranial bones, the authors were not able to determine a common consensus for the treatment of CM-1 and syringomyelia. Methods A 31-year-old-female presented to our hospital with bilateral facial paralysis, hypoesthesia and motor loss of the extremities. The patient had bilateral gag reflex loss, phonation disorder and dysarthric speaking. Sensory and motor deficits were available at the bilateral upper and lower extremities. The skeletal radiographs revealed extensive thickening and sclerosis of the calvarial and facial bones, moderate widening and sclerosis of the clavicles and ribs, and that the internal auditory canal (IAC) and the optic foramen (OF) were narrowed. CM-1 and syringomyelia secondary to the small posterior fossa were due to calvarial hyperostosis. The patient underwent posterior fossa decompression and duraplasty. In addition, a syringosubarachnoid shunt was placed at the level of C7-T1. The symptoms of lower cranial nerve palsy and motor loss were recovered, but the symptoms of the foraminal stenosis, such as visual and auditory losses and facial paralysis were not recovered in any way. Conclusion We described in this case report CM-1 as a late complication of craniodiaphyseal dysplasia (CDD), and the difficulties in its treatment. In the treatment of these patients with CDD, posterior fossa decompression and syringosubarachnoid shunting are necessary, in spite of all the risks of these procedures.


Objetivo A malformação Chiari tipo-I (MC-1) é descrita radiograficamente como um simples deslocamento da tonsila cerebelar de pelo menos 5 mm abaixo do forame magno (FM). Se houve MC-1 em função da hiperostose dos ossos do crânio, os autores não foram capazes de determinar um consenso para o tratamento de MC-1 e siringomielia. Métodos Paciente de 31 anos deu entrada com paralisia facial bilateral, hipoestesia e perda motora das extremidades. A paciente apresentou perda de reflexo de vômito bilateral, desordem fonética e disartria. Deficiência motora e sensorial foram identificadas em ambas as extremidades superiores e inferiores. Radiografias do esqueleto revelaram extensa espessamento e esclerose dos ossos calvários e faciais, ampliação moderada e esclerose das clavículas e costelas, além de estreitamento do canal auditivo interno (CAI) e do forame ótico (FO). A MC-1 e siringomielia secundária à pequena fossa posterior ocorreram devido à hiperosteose calvarial. A paciente foi submetida a descompressão da fossa posterior e duroplastia. Somado a isso, um shuntsiringo-subaracnóideo foi colocado na altura da C7-T1. Os sintomas de paralisia donervo craniano inferior e a perda motora foram recuperados, mas os sintomas de estenose do forame, como por exemplo perdas auditivas e visuais, ou paralisia facial, não foram recuperados em nenhum nível. Conclusão descrevemos neste relato de caso a MC-1 como uma complicação posterior da displasia craniodiafisária (DCD), além das dificuldades em seu tratamento. No tratamento desta paciente com DCD, são necessários a descompressão da fossa posterior e o shunt siringo-subaracnóideo, apesar de todos os riscos neste procedimento.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The study was designed to investigate whether local administration of a mixture composed of cepae extract, allantoin, and heparin (CAH) decreased already formed epidural fibrosis (EF) at the laminectomy site. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four adult male Sprague Dawley rats were equally divided into four groups. Laminectomy was performed at the L5 level in all rats. The group 2 and group 4 rats were treated with local drug administration. While the group 1 and 2 rats were sacrificed after 6 weeks, the remaining rats were reoperated and CAH mixture was applied in group 4. The vertebral columns of all rats were removed en bloc. Fibroblast numbers, EF, and arachnoidal involvement (AI) were evaluated. RESULTS: The results of the treatment groups were separately compared with the control groups. The numbers of fibroblasts in the treatment groups were significantly lower than those in the control groups (P < 0.001). The grade of EF in group 2 was significantly less than that in group 1 (P < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference regarding EF and AI grade between group 3 and group 4, and local application of the drug on EF and AI yielded better results than in the control groups. CONCLUSION: The mixture composed of CAH might be a successful candidate for preventing EF in clinical practice.

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension is characterized by high intracranial pressure without hydrocephalus or intracranial mass. Surgical treatment includes optic nerve fenestration and insertion of ventriculoperitoneal and lumboperitoneal (LP) shunts. For decreasing intracranial pressure, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) LP shunt is widely used for the surgical management; it also carries complications such as shunt migration, venous sinus thrombosis, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and subdural and intracerebral hematoma. A 52-year-old man was admitted to the neurosurgery clinic with severe headache, retro-orbital pain, and blurred vision. Lumbar puncture demonstrated that the CSF opening pressure was 32 cm H 2 O. A nonprogrammable LP shunt with two distal slit valves was inserted. Shortly after the surgery, his condition deteriorated and he became comatose. Immediate computed tomography scan revealed cerebellar hemorrhage and acute hydrocephalus. Development of remote cerebellar hemorrhage following LP shunt is rare. We discuss this rare event and the applicable literature.

Glioblastoma cyst fluid contains growth factors and extracellular matrix proteins which are known as neurotrophic and neurite-promoting agents. Therefore, we hypothesized that glioblastoma cyst fluid can promote the regeneration of injured peripheral nerves. To validate this hypothesis, we transected rat sciatic nerve, performed epineural anastomosis, and wrapped the injured sciatic nerve with glioblastoma cyst fluid- or saline-soaked gelatin sponges. Neurological function and histomorphological examinations showed that compared with the rats receiving local saline treatment, those receiving local glioblastoma cyst fluid treatment had better sciatic nerve function, fewer scars, greater axon area, counts and diameter as well as fiber diameter. These findings suggest that glioblastoma cyst fluid can promote the regeneration of injured sciatic nerve and has the potential for future clinical application in patients with peripheral nerve injury.

ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To investigate whether topically administered hemostatic agents ankaferd blood stopper and microporous polysaccharide hemospheres can decrease epidural fibrosis after laminectomy in rats. METHODS: Eighteen adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were equally and randomly divided into three groups. In the treatment groups, ankaferd blood stopper and microporous polysaccharide hemospheres topically administrated upon duramater surface after laminectomy. Fibroblast count, epidural fibrosis and arachnoidal involvement were evaluated and graded histopathologically. RESULTS: Our data revealed that the count of fibroblasts, the grading of epidural fibrosis and arachnoideal involvement in the rats treated with microporous polysaccharide hemospheres were significantly less than the control group. Although the arachnoideal involvement in ankaferd blood stopper group were significantly less than the control group, there were no statistical differences when comparing the grading of epidural fibrosis and the fibroblasts count between the treatment groups and the control group. CONCLUSION: The ankaferd blood stopper and microporous polysaccharide hemospheres reduced epidural fibrosis and arachnoideal involvement after laminectomy in rats.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether topically administered hemostatic agents ankaferd blood stopper and microporous polysaccharide hemospheres can decrease epidural fibrosis after laminectomy in rats. METHODS: Eighteen adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were equally and randomly divided into three groups. In the treatment groups, ankaferd blood stopper and microporous polysaccharide hemospheres topically administrated upon duramater surface after laminectomy. Fibroblast count, epidural fibrosis and arachnoidal involvement were evaluated and graded histopathologically. RESULTS: Our data revealed that the count of fibroblasts, the grading of epidural fibrosis and arachnoideal involvement in the rats treated with microporous polysaccharide hemospheres were significantly less than the control group. Although the arachnoideal involvement in ankaferd blood stopper group were significantly less than the control group, there were no statistical differences when comparing the grading of epidural fibrosis and the fibroblasts count between the treatment groups and the control group. CONCLUSION: The ankaferd blood stopper and microporous polysaccharide hemospheres reduced epidural fibrosis and arachnoideal involvement after laminectomy in rats.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: General anesthesia (GA) is the most commonly used anesthetic technique for spinal surgery. This study aimed to compare spinal anesthesia (SA) and GA in patients undergoing spinal surgery, in terms of perioperative outcome and cost effectiveness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 80 patients with ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists) physical status I-II. The patients were randomized to receive SA (n = 40) or GA (n = 40). Heart rate (HR), mean arterial blood pressure (MABP), blood loss, duration of surgery, duration of anesthesia, surgeon satisfaction, and duration in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) were recorded. Postoperative analgesic requirement, nausea and vomiting (PONV), perioperative hemodynamic variables, and anesthetic costs were determined. RESULTS: HR and MABP were significantly higher in the GA group than in the SA group at the end of surgery and at PACU admission. Duration of anesthesia, surgeon satisfaction, postoperative analgesic requirement, and anesthetic costs were significantly higher in the GA group. Mean blood loss was lower in the SA group than in the GA group, but the difference was not significant. Duration of surgery, duration in the PACU, perioperative hemodynamic variables, and complications were similar in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: SA could be considered a reliable alternative to GA in patients undergoing lumber spine surgery, as it is clinically as effective as GA, but more cost effective.

OBJECTIVE: Earlier studies suggest that high-calorie diet is an important risk factor for neuronal damage resulting from oxidative stress of lipid metabolism. In our experimental study of rats under high-fat diet, oxidative stress markers and axonal degeneration parameters were used to observe the sciatic nerve neuropathy. The aim of this study is to evaluate the pathophysiology of neuropathy induced by high-fat diet. METHODS: A total of 14 male rats (Wistar albino) were randomly divided into two experimental groups as follows; control group (n=7) and the model group (n=7); while control group was fed with standard diet; where the model group was fed with a high-fat diet for 12 weeks. At the end of 12 weeks, the lipid profile and blood glucose levels, interleukin-1ß (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) levels were studied. Tissue malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO) levels and super-oxide dismutase (SOD), paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities were studied. The distal blocks of the left sciatic nerves were evaluated for histomorphological analysis (including mean axon area, axon numbers, nerve fiber diameters, axon diameters, and thickness of myelin sheets). RESULTS: Body weights, serum glucose and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels of rats were found not statistically significantly different compared between the model and the control groups (p>0.05). Serum cholesterol, triglyceride, TGF-ß and TNF-α levels were significantly higher in the model group when compared with the control group (p<0.05). IL-1 and IL-6 levels were not statistically significantly different compared between the model group and the control group (p>0.05). The MDA and NO levels and the SOD and GPx activities of the sciatic nerves in model group were statistically significantly higher than the control group (p<0.05). In addition, the activities of PON-1 were statistically significantly lower in the model group when compared with the control group (p<0.05). The difference in the total number of myelinated axons between the control group and the model group was not statistically significant (p>0.05). The nerve fiber diameter and the thickness of the myelin sheet were statistically significantly lower in the model group when compared with the control group (p<0.05). The axon diameter and area were significantly decreased in the model group when compared with the control group (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Our results support that dyslipidemia is an independent risk factor for the development of neuropathy. In addition, we postulated that oxidative stress and inflammatory response may play an important role in the pathogenesis of high-fat diet induced neuropathy.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Tufted angiomas (TAs) are rare, benign vascular neoplasms of childhood mainly localized in the skin and subcutaneous tissues. TAs are progressive, slowly growing, and characteristically involve superficial or deep muscle fascia tissue. TAs are frequently seen before the age of 5 years (60 to 70%) and have no sex predominance. TA following pregnancy or TA among immunosuppressive drug users was rarely reported in literature. TA is extremely rare in patients older than 60 years. PATIENT: A 73-year-old man presented with right eye pain, redness, burning sensation, swelling, and double vision. On physical examination, his right eye was protruding, hyperemic, and there was a supraorbital palpable mass extending to the lateral orbital wall. Cranial computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a heterogeneously enhancing right intraorbital retrobulbar capsulated lesion with intracranial extension. The patient underwent surgery. TA was proven histopathologically. CONCLUSION: We report the first TA of the orbit with orbital and cranial bone destruction, frontotemporal extension, and loss of vision due to optic nerve compression. The surgical treatment and orbitocranial mesh reconstruction following neurosurgical gross total removal of the lesion is discussed. TAs should be considered in the differential diagnosis of intraorbital tumors. TAs usually persist throughout life but cause no serious symptoms when they are located in the upper thorax, neck, and shoulders. TAs located in the orbit should be excised.

BACKGROUND: Citicoline has been shown to have beneficial effects in a variety of CNS injury models. The aim of this study was to test the effects of citicoline on nerve regeneration and scarring in a rat model of peripheral nerve surgery. METHODS: Seventy adult Sprague-Dawley rats underwent a surgical procedure involving right sciatic nerve section and epineural suturing. Rats were assigned to the control or experiment groups to receive a topical application of 0.4 mL of saline or 0.4 mL (100 micromol/L) of citicoline, respectively. Macroscopic, histological, functional, and electromyographic assessments of nerves were performed 4 to 12 weeks after surgery. RESULTS: In the control versus citicoline-treated rats, SFI was -90 +/- 1 versus -84 +/- 1 (P < .001), -76 +/- 4 versus -61 +/- 3 (P < .001), and -66 +/- 2 versus -46 +/- 3 (P < .001) at 4, 8, and 12 weeks after surgery, respectively. At 12 weeks after surgery, axon count and diameter were 16400 +/- 600 number/mm(2) and 5.47 +/- 0.25 microm versus 22250 +/- 660 number/mm(2) (P < .001) and 6.65 +/- 0.28 microm (P < .01) in the control and citicoline-treated groups, respectively. In citicoline-treated rats, histomorphological axonal organization score at the repair site was (3.4 +/- 0.1) significantly better than that in controls (2.6 +/- 0.3) (P < .001). Peripheral nerve regeneration evaluated by EMG at 12 weeks after surgery showed significantly better results in the citicoline group (P < .05). Nerves treated with citicoline demonstrated reduced scarring at the repair site (P < .001). CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrate that citicoline promotes regeneration of peripheral nerves subjected to immediate section suturing type surgery and reduces postoperative scarring.
