(1) Background: currently, the advantages of bulk-fill resin composite and high-viscosity glass ionomer materials have increased their use in dentistry; accordingly, their mechanical, surface, and optical properties have become more important. This study aimed to evaluate the mechanical, surface, and optical properties of three different restorative materials (a high-viscosity bulk-fill resin composite (TNC), a flowable bulk-fill resin composite (EBF), and a high-viscosity glass ionomer (FIX)) after application using different techniques (control, heat application, and ultrasonic activation). (2) Methods: specimens were prepared to assess the color stability and surface roughness (n = 12). The specimens were immersed in two different solutions for 14 days. For the compressive strength test, specimens were prepared using a Teflon mold (n = 12). (3) Results: among the specimens applied according to the manufacturer's instructions and immersed in distilled water, it was observed that the surface roughness values of FIX on the 7th day were statistically significantly higher than the other materials (p < 0.05). The compressive strength values of EBF applied using ultrasonic activation were significantly lower than those of EBF applied using the other techniques (p < 0.05). (4) Conclusions: coffee can negatively affect the color stability of restorative materials, but discoloration may vary depending on differences in the content of the material. All materials evaluated in this study exhibited clinically acceptable surface roughness values. It can be concluded that flowable bulk-fill resin composite is the most durable material in terms of compressive strength, so it can be used in the restoration of posterior teeth, especially those exposed to intensive stress.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of in-office bleaching in esthetic dentistry on the roughness and color stability of the enamel surface, using different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (HP). Fifty human incisors were randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 10). No bleaching was performed in the control group. For these groups, concentrations of 40% HP with fluoride (F), 35% HP with calcium (Ca), 25% HP with nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) and 18% HP with nHA were used for bleaching in the test groups. Surface roughness was assessed at baseline after bleaching occurred. Color measurements were first obtained at baseline, then after the first and second sessions of bleaching, and, finally, after the staining protocol. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were performed. Statistical analysis was conducted with a one-way ANOVA, followed by a post hoc Tukey's test and a paired-samples t-test (p < 0.05). All the bleaching gels used exhibited a similar color change (p > 0.05). Bleaching gels containing 18% HP with nHA and that containing 35% HP with Ca caused less surface roughness of the enamel. Of these concentrations, 25% HP with nHA caused the most surface roughness and no significant difference was observed, compared with 40% HP with F. The highest coloration after bleaching was observed in 40% HP with F and 25% HP with nHA. The lowest coloration was obtained in 35% HP with Ca and 18% HP with nHA but no significant difference was observed between them and the control group. A concentration above 18% HP does not increase the bleaching effectiveness. The results show that 18% HP with nHA and 35% HP with Ca resulted in the least increase in enamel surface roughness when compared to high-concentrate HP; however, it also prevented recoloration after bleaching.

RESUMO

Robinow syndrome (RS) is an extremely rare condition. Characteristic craniofacial findings of RS include a fetal facial appearance, ear abnormalities and oral findings. The aim of this case report was to evaluate the oral findings of a 26-year-old man with RS and to describe the dental treatments performed. The patient had short stature, vertebral anomalies, short and broad fingers, a fetal facial appearance, gingival hyperplasia, fissured tongue, caries and multiple impacted teeth. Periodontal and restorative dental treatments were performed under aseptic conditions with due precautions. No surgical treatment was performed to the impacted teeth because of the lack of symptoms.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate effects of different polishing methods and whitening agents on surface hardness and roughness of nano-hybrid composite resin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In total, one hundred twenty disc-shaped specimens were prepared to nano-hybrid composite (Charisma Diamond). 60 samples were used for microhardness measurements and the others were used for the evaluation of surface roughness. Samples were divided randomly into two subgroups (n = 30 each). In first group a low-viscosity liquid polishing agent (Biscover LV) was applied. In the second group, nothing was applied. All the samples were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h. After initial measurements were completed, samples were divided randomly into three subgroups for bleaching application. 10% carbamide peroxide (Opalescence PF), 45% carbamide peroxide (Opalescence PF Quick), 38% hydrogen peroxide (Opalescence Boost) was applied. Then microhardness and surface roughness measurements of samples were repeated and data were recorded as final values for each sample. RESULTS: When the polishing techniques were compared, no signicant difference was observed in surface hardness and roughness. When the bleaching agents were compared, the 10% carbamide peroxide and 38% hydrogen peroxide containing bleaching agent groups showed statistically significant differences between pre- and post-procedure hardness values (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Office-type bleaching agent containing CP was observed to be more secure for composite resins than other bleaching agents. No negative effect of glaze materials on the protection of surface roughness and hardness of composite resin was observed. Key words:Composite resin, bleaching, surface hardness, surface roughness.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a desensitizing agent on microleakage of Class V cavities. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 72 premolar teeth were used. There were 6 groups. Class V restorations were prepared with two different restorative materials (Equia fil, GC, America and Grandio, VOCO, Germany) and two adhesive systems (Clearfil SE Bond, Kuraray, Japan and S3 Bond Plus, Kuraray, Japan) with and without desensitizing agent (Gluma Desensitizer, Heraeus Kulzer, Germany). Restorations were polished with aluminum oxide abrasive discs. Then a range of 5 - 55C thermocycling was performed 10.000 times. The microleakage of restorations was examined with dye penetration method (Basic fuchsine). Bonferroni corrections and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to determine the significance of differences in occlusal and gingival dye penetration scores between groups. RESULTS: There was no stastistical significance between the occlusal and gingival microleakage scores within the groups were shown. CONCLUSIONS: It can be concluded that use of desensitizing agent under both high viscosity glass ionomer restorative materials and resin composites doesn't affect the microleakage. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effects of resin infiltration and sealant type on enamel surface properties and Streptococcus mutans adhesion to artificial enamel lesions. Artificial enamel lesions were produced on the surfaces of 120 enamel specimens, which were divided into two groups: Group A and Group B (n=60 per group). Each group was further divided into four subgroups (n=15 per subgroup) according to sealant type: Group I-Demineralized enamel (control); Group II-Enamel Pro Varnish; Group III-ExciTE F; and Group IV-Icon. In Group A, hardness and surface roughness were evaluated; in Group B, bacterial adhesion was evaluated. Icon application resulted in significantly lower surface roughness and higher hardness than the other subgroups in Group A. In Group B, Enamel Pro Varnish resulted in lowest bacterial adhesion, followed by Icon. This study showed that resin infiltration of enamel lesions could arrest lesion progress.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the change in surface hardness of silorane-based composite resin (Filtek Silorane) in time and compare the results with the surface hardness of two methacrylate-based resins (Filtek Supreme and Majesty Posterior). MATERIALS AND METHODS: From each composite material, 18 wheel-shaped samples (5-mm diameter and 2-mm depth) were prepared. Top and bottom surface hardness of these samples was measured using a Vicker's hardness tester. The samples were then stored at 37°C and 100% humidity. After 24 h and 7, 30 and 90 days, the top and bottom surface hardness of the samples was measured. In each measurement, the rate between the hardness of the top and bottom surfaces were recorded as the hardness rate. Statistical analysis was performed by one-way analysis of variance, multiple comparisons by Tukey's test and binary comparisons by t-test with a significance level of P = 0.05. RESULTS: The highest hardness values were obtained from each two surfaces of Majesty Posterior and the lowest from Filtek Silorane. Both the top and bottom surface hardness of the methacrylate based composite resins was high and there was a statistically significant difference between the top and bottom hardness values of only the silorane-based composite, Filtek Silorane (P < 0.05). The lowest was obtained with Filtek Silorane. The hardness values of all test groups increased after 24 h (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Although silorane-based composite resin Filtek Silorane showed adequate hardness ratio, the use of incremental technic during application is more important than methacrylate based composites.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the application of gaseous ozone and Nd:YAG laser on glass-fibre post bond strength. Forty-two madibular premolar roots were cut, endodontically instrumented and irrigated with 2.5% NaOCl. Post spaces were prepared and roots were divided into three groups (n = 14). The antimicrobial pretreatment was conducted as follows: gaseous ozone, Nd:YAG laser and control (no additional disinfection methods). Scanning electron microscope analysis was made for each group (n = 2). A resin cement was used for luting the posts. For push-out test, each root was cut horizontally (two cervical, two middle and two apical). Statistical analyses were performed with one-way anova (α = 0.05). Fracture types were observed. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups (P > 0.05). There were statistically significant differences in cervical and apical segments of laser and control groups (P < 0.05). The disinfection of the post spaces with Nd:YAG laser and ozone had no adverse effects on bond strength of glass-fibre post.

INTRODUCTION: The aims of this study were to evaluate the effect of an antibacterial monomer-containing self-etching adhesive in reducing enamel demineralization around orthodontic brackets in vivo and to compare it with the conventional adhesive system quantitatively. METHODS: Fourteen orthodontic patients were randomly divided into 2 equal groups; they received brackets fitted to all their teeth, bonded with either Clearfil Protect Bond (Kuraray Medical, Okayama, Japan) (experimental group) or Transbond XT (3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif) (control group). Block randomization to obtain equal numbers in each group was used. After 30 days, all first premolars were extracted with orthodontic indications and longitudinally sectioned. Demineralization was assessed by cross-sectional microhardness. Determinations were made at the bracket edge cementing limits and at occlusal and cervical points 100 and 200 µm away from the edge. In all of these positions, 6 indentations were made at depths of 10 to 90 µm from the enamel surface. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey post-hoc test were used. The statistical significance level was set at P <0.05. RESULTS: ANOVA showed statistically significant differences for adhesive type, position, depth, and their interactions (P <0.05). The multiple comparison test showed that the antibacterial monomer-containing adhesive was significantly more efficient than the conventional adhesive system, reducing enamel demineralization in almost all evaluations (P <0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The results indicated that using antibacterial monomer-containing adhesive for bonding orthodontic brackets successfully inhibited caries in vivo. This cariostatic effect was localized at the area around the brackets and was significant after 30 days.

OBJECTIVE: To test the null hypothesis that there is no significant difference between the chitosan-containing and conventional nonfluoridated dentifrices in inhibition of enamel demineralization around orthodontic brackets. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen orthodontic patients who were scheduled to have extraction of four first premolars for orthodontic reasons were divided into two groups after the power of the study was estimated. Patients in the experimental group were instructed to use chitosan-containing dentifrice (AloeDent), and patients in the control group were instructed to use nonfluoridated dentifrice (Sensodyne Mint). After 60 days, the teeth were extracted and longitudinally sectioned. The demineralization was assessed by cross-sectional microhardness. The determinations were made at the bracket edge cementing limits and at occlusal and cervical points, 100 µm and 200 µm away from the edge. In all these positions, indentations were made at depths of 10, 20, 30, 50, 70, and 90 µm from the enamel surface. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey test were used for statistical evaluation at P < .05 level. RESULTS: ANOVA showed statistically significant differences for the factors of dentifrice type, position, and depth (P  =  .000). Statistically significant differences for microhardness values between two tested dentifrices were observed up to 20 µm of depth from the enamel surface (P < .05). Lower microhardness values were found for nonfluoridated dentifrice. Significant microhardness differences were also determined between materials at occlusal and cervical 0 µm positions (P < .05). At these positions, chitosan-containing dentifrice showed lower demineralization than the control. CONCLUSION: Chitosan-containing dentifrice may reduce the enamel decalcification found in patients with poor oral hygiene. The null hypothesis is rejected.

BACKGROUND: A preliminary study using laser fluorescence suggested that amorphous phosphate-containing orthodontic composites may prevent demineralisation around bonded orthodontic brackets. OBJECTIVE: To compare the microhardness of the enamel around brackets bonded with an amorphous calcium phosphate-containing orthodontic composite (ACP-containing) with the microhardness of the enamel around brackets bonded with a conventional composite resin. METHODS: Forty extracted upper premolars were used. Orthodontic brackets were bonded to the teeth with either an ACP-containing composite resin (N = 20) or a conventional composite resin (N = 20). The latter were used as the control. The crowns of all teeth were painted with an acid resistant varnish, leaving a 2 mm ring of exposed enamel around the brackets. The teeth were then subjected to a daily cycle of demineralisation for 6 hours and remineralisation for 18 hours for 21 days. Each tooth was sectioned and the microhardness of the enamel determined 25, 50, 75, 100 and 150 microm from the surface. RESULTS: The enamel was significantly harder 25 microm (p = 0.000) and 50 microm (p = 0.001) from the enamel surface in the teeth with brackets bonded with the ACP-containing composite resin as compared with the control teeth. CONCLUSION: ACP-containing orthodontic composite resins may reduce the enamel decalcification found in patients with poor oral hygiene.

INTRODUCTION: The aims of this study were to evaluate the in-vivo reaction of newly erupted enamel to demineralization around orthodontic brackets and to compare it with that of mature enamel. METHODS: Thirteen orthodontic patients scheduled to have 4 first premolars extracted for orthodontic reasons were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 included 7 younger patients with newly erupted teeth (4 boys, 3 girls; mean age, 11.21 +/- 1.12 years; range, 11-13 years). Group 2 contained 6 adults with mature teeth (5 men, 1 woman; mean age, 34.64 +/- 4.01 years; range, 25-41 years). Brackets were placed, and, 30 days later, the teeth were extracted. These teeth were longitudinally sectioned, and demineralization was assessed by cross-sectional microhardness. Determinations were made at the bracket-edge composite limits and at occlusal and cervical points 100 mum away. Evaluations under the brackets and at the lingual surfaces were made as controls. In all these positions, 6 indentations were made at depths from 10 to 90 mum from the enamel surface. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey tests were used for statistical evaluation at the P <0.05 level. RESULTS: ANOVA showed statistically significant differences for tooth type, position, depth, and their interactions (P <0.05), except the tooth type and position interaction. The multiple comparison test showed less demineralization in the enamel around orthodontic brackets bonded to mature teeth campared with newly erupted teeth (P <0.05). CONCLUSIONS: During the 30-day study period, the tooth enamel in the adult orthodontic patients was more resistant to demineralization than that of the younger patients.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of three different antiseptic mouthrinse solutions on the saliva samples obtained from the individuals, who had high caries activity rate. METHODS: The efficacy of three antiseptic mouthrinses were evaluated in a study with healthy volunteers. The three antiseptic solutions used in this study were 0.1% octenidine dihydrochloride (Octenisept, Schülke&Mayr, UK), 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate (Kloroben, Drogsan, Turkey) and an antimicrobial enzymatic rinse (Biotene, Laclede, Inc, USA). A total of 27 adult volunteer subjects were participated in the study. The subjects were stratified into three balanced group. Then the mouth rinses were used by each group according to the manufacturer's directions. The subjects were restricted for 60 minutes for food intake after using the prescribed mouthrinse. The saliva samples were collected from the volunteers at 1, 10 and 60 minutes after their usage in tubes. The tubes were kept in +4 degrees C in a fridge till the evaluation. 10(-3) and 10(-5) dilutions were prepared for each solution and S. mutans were evaluated according to total number of colony forming unit (CFU) per ml. The dilutions were spreaded on the surface of Brucella agar plates for anaerobic incubation for 48 hours. The dilutions were 100, 10(-3) and 10(-5) of the solutions Kloroben, Biotene, Octenisept, and the time factor were 0, 1, 10 and 60 minutes. The statistical analyses were performed by Duncan and Bonferroni tests. RESULTS: Octenisept was found to be more effective over S. mutans than the other mouthrinse solutions (P<.05). CONCLUSIONS: All mouthrinse solutions except Biotene were effective on oral microorganisms.

OBJECTIVE: This in vitro study evaluated the microleakage of Class V cavities restored with a resin composite and different adhesive systems after occlusal loading. METHODS & MATERIALS: Standardized box-shaped Class V cavities were prepared on the buccal side of 135 non-carious human premolars. The teeth were randomly divided into three groups of 45 premolars each and restored as follows: Group 1-two-step total-etch adhesive (Single Bond, 3M) + resin composite (Supreme, 3M ESPE); Group 2-two-step self-etch adhesive (Clearfil SE, Kuraray) + resin composite and Group 3-one-step self-etch adhesive (Xeno III, Dentsply) + resin composite. The restorations were finished with aluminum oxide discs (Sof-Lex, 3M). Fifteen teeth in each group received 10,000 x 100 N and 250 N occlusal loads, respectively, and the remaining 15 teeth served as the control. The premolars were immersed in 2% methylene blue for 24 hours. The dye penetration was examined under a stereomicroscope, and the results were statistically analyzed by Kruskal Wallis, Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon Signed Rank tests to determine differences between the groups. RESULTS: Gingival margins showed more dye penetration than occlusal margins in all the tested groups (p<0.05). In all the tested adhesive systems, 100 N occlusal loading did not change dye penetration; however, Groups 1 and 2 exhibited better marginal sealing than Group 3 at the enamel margins under 250 N occlusal loading. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this in vitro study, it may be concluded that enamel margins provided better marginal sealing than dentin/cementum margins and the two-step self-etch adhesive exhibited better marginal sealing than an all-in-one adhesive at the enamel margins under 250 N occlusal loading.

RESUMO

AIM: The purpose of this in vitro study was to examine the effect of two different finishing systems on the surface roughness of different types of composite restorative materials. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Thirty specimens, 8 mm in diameter and 3 mm in depth, were prepared using a microfill composite (Clearfil ST, Kuraray Co. Ltd., Osaka, Japan), a hybrid composite (Clearfil AP-X, Kuraray Co. Ltd., Osaka, Japan), and a packable composite (Clearfil Photo Posterior, Kuraray Co. Ltd., Osaka, Japan) cured against a Mylar matrix strip to create a baseline surface. The average surface roughness was measured using a surface profilometer (Surftest 211, Mitutoyo, Japan) in five different positions on each sample before and after finishing with one of the two finishing systems [Sof-Lex discs (3M) and Po-Go (Dentsply)]. The obtained data were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at a p=0.05 significance level. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences in the average surface roughness (Ra, microm) between the Mylar matrix strip, Sof-Lex discs, and Po-Go discs (p<0.05). For all tested materials, the Mylar matrix strip provided smoother surfaces than both of the finishing systems (p<0.05). When the finishing discs were compared, Sof-Lex discs produced a smoother surface than Po-Go discs for all tested materials (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The Mylar matrix strip provided a smoother surface than Sof-Lex and Po-Go discs. Furthermore, Sof-Lex discs produced smoother surfaces than Po-Go discs. Sof-Lex and Po-Go systems produced clinically acceptable surface roughness for microfill, hybrid, and packable composite resin materials. The effect of finishing and polishing systems on surface roughness was dependent on both the system and the composite resin restorative material.
