RESUMO
Bimodal visual somatosensory long-latent evoked potentials (LEP) and automatic analysis were employed to examine 110 healthy neonates of different gestation age. The data were obtained about maturation of that type of evoked bioelectric activity of the brain. Nonspecific changes in LEP revealed in 34 neonates with impairment of the white matter of the cerebral hemispheres pointed to the gravity of the pathological process, corresponded with the intensity of brain echogram abnormalities and disease outcomes. LEP were shown to be labile in premature neonates suffering from leukoencephalopathy.

The incidence of cysts of cerebral ventricular vascular plexuses (CVP), estimated with the use of echography in 2671 newborns, has made up 4.16% in full-term babies and 3.67% in preterm ones. Analysis of 40 CVP cases has shown that asphyxia and marked mechanical effects on fetal head and neck at birth and intrauterine herpetic infection may be conducive to the development of this condition. Psychomotor development of these children in the first 3 years of life was normal and only if CVP were combined with other diseases inducing stable brain injuries, neurologic disorders were present.

Generalized herpetic infection in the newborn runs its course in association with cerebral lesions as well as with injuries to the lungs, heart and liver. The infection diagnosis should take into account the mother's epidemiological anamnesis, the clinical manifestations in the child and the results of the simultaneous use of several methods (fluorescent antibody test, IEA, virological test). Of paramount importance is the simultaneous examination of the mother. Of no less importance is echoencephalography, namely the detection of cysts in white matter of the frontal lobes.

Normal echographic anatomy of the brain was studied in 179 newborns whose gestation age ranged from 25 to 42 weeks. Specific features of various brain structure images (caudate nucleus head, islet, periventricular spaces, large hemisphere sulcus) are analyzed in relation to the gestation age of the infants and the scanning plane. Normal parameters of the cerebral ventricles, cerebellum, corpus callosum, transparent septum space, etc., are presented. Stability of some brain structures in intrauterine hypotrophy was demonstrated. The studies have confirmed high informative value of echography for the imaging of various brain structures in the diagnosis of brain abnormalities and diseases, as well as the possibility of determining the newborn's gestation age by this method.

The examination of 1712 neonates by using an ultrasound method provided the findings of the incidence and echographic pattern of subependymal hemorrhages (SEH). A long-term follow-up of 32 newborns with SEH detected at birth by dynamic brain echography indicated that the mental and motor development in 30 of them was normal, whereas 2 babies had mild specific growth retardation unrelated to SEH. EEG abnormalities were found in 9 of 20 examined children. It was suggested that SEH failed to affect the mental and nervous development in infants, regardless of the extent and site of an injury.

The study in 209 mothers with lactational mastitis has employed an AGA-780M thermovisor. Thermograms underwent a qualitative and quantitative isotherm-based evaluation. Diagnostic sensitivity of telethermography in mastitis was 97.1%. It could not differentiate types of mastitis in most cases and thus had a low specificity. Telethermography allows early identification of mastitis, control of therapy and reduction of the incidence of suppurative mastitis. The opportunity of telethermographic differentiation of milk stasis and initial mastitis has important practical implications since it allows one to avoid inappropriate use of antibiotics.

Compensatory potentials of the central nervous system (CNS) in preterm infants with a history of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy have been discussed with an emphasis on a need for revision of traditional perceptions. The use of new methods of evaluation of the developing brain indicates the phenomenon of its neurologic adaptability. It is suggested by a high incidence of CNS functional recovery in surviving preterm infants. The recovery process is phasic and bears most promise if rehabilitative interventions are individualized for every child.

The investigation was conducted to reveal reliable echographic features of early (necrotic) stages of periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) on the basis of retrospective analysis of echograms of decreased children (with postmortem diagnosis of PVL) and survived newborns with pronounced cystic changes in the periventricular areas (advanced PVL stage), which were revealed during dynamic echoencephalography. Altogether 268 echograms of 78 children with a birth-weight from 700 to 2400 g were analysed. All children but one were born preterm. Ultrasound device "Aloka-SSD 118" (Japan), with a transducer frequency of 5mHz, was used during frontal fontanel echoencephalography. Three patterns of echographic image of periventricular areas compromised with the aforementioned disease were identified. In the detection of early PVL stages, the specificity of the technique was 94% and sensitivity, 86%. The followup that lasted from 9 months to 2.5 years revealed varying pronounced neurologic disorders in all the survived children with PVL.

Mammary and endometrial status was examined in 162 female patients with benign ovarian tumors and tumor-like formations. Abnormal changes were found in the brests of 69.1% of the patients, and in the endometrium of 33%. A study of the secretory endometrium in patients with benign ovarian tumors and endometrioid cysts by means of the measurement of estradiol and progesterone receptors, demonstrated definite intracellular changes concerning the transmission of an adequate hormonal signal in endometrial cells, in which with respect to mammary hyperplasia.

A thyroid enlargement was noted during ultrasound investigation of 41 patients with autoimmune thyroiditis. The structure of glandular tissue was inhomogeneous with zones of rarity and density. Repeated echography of the thyroid in 20 patients with autoimmune thyroiditis after prolonged thyrotherapy (thyroiodine at a daily dose of 0.1-0.2 g and 1.2 tablets of Thyreocomb daily) revealed diminished sizes of the thyroid in 9 patients, unchanged sizes of the thyroid in 11, unchanged echostructure of the thyroid in 17, in 3 patients thyroid tissue echogeneity was increased, its structure became more homogeneous, sizes became less. This method provides additional information on the topography, sizes and echostructure of the thyroid, assessing the effectiveness of conservative therapy.

In 15 healthy mature babies and 15 newborn babies with cerebral pathology the visual evoked potentials (VEP) were investigated. The light diodes were used for stimulation. The curves preprocessed using a simple configurations technique were analysed with an euristic technique on a microcomputer. The high information value (88.5%) was attributed to VEP in cases of perinatal brain lesions. This suggested the inclusion of VEP techniques into the routine neurological investigation of the newborns.
