RESUMO

In this work, omniphobic surfaces are developed by combining chemical etching and surface modification of aluminum. In the first step, hierarchical micro/nanostructuring is carried out by chemical etching. Thereafter, a perfluoropolyether is grafted onto the corrugated aluminum substrate, decreasing its surface free energy and turning the system omniphobic. The morphology and chemical composition of the developed surfaces are characterized. We observed a low affinity toward liquids, regardless of their chemical nature and surface tension. The surface shows superhydrophobic properties with a water contact angle of 160° and simultaneously strong oleophobic properties with a hexadecane contact angle of 141°. Furthermore, these omniphobic surfaces significantly delay the freezing time of water droplets to 5100 s, which is about 20-fold of the freezing time on pristine aluminum (260 s), and they even inhibit ice growth by repelling the incoming droplets prior to ice nucleation.

RESUMO

Blue whales are sighted every year around the Azores islands, which apparently provide an important seasonal foraging area. In this paper we aim to characterize habitat preferences and analyze the temporal distribution of blue whales around São Miguel Island. To do so, we applied Generalized Additive Models to an opportunistic cetacean occurrence dataset and remotely sensed environmental data on bathymetry, sea surface temperature, chlorophyll concentration and altimetry. We provide a brief description of the oceanography of the area, emphasizing its high spatio-temporal variability. In order to capture this dynamism, we used environmental data with two different spatial resolutions (low and high) and three different temporal resolutions (daily, weekly and monthly), thus accounting for both long-term oceanographic events such as the spring bloom, and shorter-term features such as eddies or fronts. Our results show that blue whales have a well-defined ecological niche around the Azores. They usually cross the archipelago from March to June and habitat suitability is highest in dynamic areas (with high Eddy Kinetic Energy) characterized by convergence or aggregation zones where productivity is enhanced. Multi-scale studies are useful to understand the ecological niche and habitat requirements of highly mobile species that can easily react to short-term changes in the environment.

RESUMO

In the present work, perfluoroalkylated laponite nanoparticles with a high degree of functionalization (60 wt %) have been prepared and a methodology to prepare transparent, antistatic, and omniphobic laponite-based films with holistic self-cleaning properties against liquids, solids and liquid-solid mixtures has been developed. The intrinsic electrical and ionic conductivities observed in unmodified laponite coatings are combined with perfluoroalkyl-modified laponite clays. As a result, films with improved self-cleaning functionality based on dust-repellency and omniphobic liquid-repellence (sheet resistance in the range of 107 Ω/□ and contact angles of 106° (H2O) and 93° (oil)) were obtained. These unique films, being capable to repel dust and liquids, were applied to a variety of substrates (i.e., glass and plastics) and tested against solids and liquids of different nature with excellent performance. Bending tests of these holistic self-cleaning films deposited over flexible substrates showed better mechanical performance than unmodified laponite films.

RESUMO

Stimuli-responsive reversible coloration-change materials represent a highly demanded type of smart systems useful for a wide variety of applications, with a significant growing interest in multicolor abilities. In particular, electrochromic materials have received a great deal of attention due to their versatility and broad range of industrial uses. However, most of the existing electrochromic technologies provide a single coloration, while achieving multiple colors based on simple approaches remains a challenge. The present article reports on PVA gel-based electrochromic devices, containing a single viologen, providing a colorless and two different well-defined colored states. The successful fabrication of a device, based on two viologens (multi-EC gel) with a simple architecture (glass/TCO/multi-EC gel/TCO/glass), with five different multiswitchable colors based on four-zoned electrodes (rainbow-like ECD) is also demonstrated. This novel easy-to-make multichromic system represents a significant breakthrough toward the generation of full-color devices, expanding the potential of electrochromic technology.

RESUMO

Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) films have been electrodeposited on indium tin oxide-coated polyethylene terephthalate (ITO-PET) substrates from graphene oxide (GO) solutions, and the resulting flexible transparent electrodes have been used in electrochromic devices of ethyl viologen (EtV(2+)). The electrochromic performance of devices with bare ITO-PET electrodes and ITO-PET coated with RGO has been compared. Under continuous cycling tests up to large voltages, the RGO film was oxidized and dispersed in the electrochromic mixture. The resulting devices, which contained GO and RGO in the electrochromic mixture, showed lower switching voltages between the colored and bleached states. This electrocatalytic activity of the solution-phase GO/RGO pair toward the electrochemical reaction of the electrochromic redox couple (the dication EtV(2+) and the radical cation EtV(+•)) allowed devices with an optical contrast higher than the contrast of those free of GO at the same applied voltage.
