RESUMO

The initial electrical characteristics and bias stabilities of thin-film transistors (TFTs) are vital factors regarding the practical use of electronic devices. In this study, the dependence of positive bias stress (PBS) instability on an initial threshold voltage (VTH) and its origin were analyzed by understanding the roles of slow and fast traps in solution-processed oxide TFTs. To control the initial VTH of oxide TFTs, the indium oxide (InOx) semiconductor was doped with aluminum (Al), which functioned as a carrier suppressor. The concentration of oxygen vacancies decreased as the Al doping concentration increased, causing a positive VTH shift in the InOx TFTs. The VTH shift (∆VTH) caused by PBS increased exponentially when VTH was increased, and a distinct tendency was observed as the gate bias stress increased due to a high vertical electric field in the oxide dielectric. In addition, the recovery behavior was analyzed to reveal the influence of fast and slow traps on ∆VTH by PBS. Results revealed that the effect of the slow trap increased as the VTH moved in the positive direction; this occured because the main electron trap location moved away from the interface as the Fermi level approached the conduction band minimum. Understanding the correlation between VTH and PBS instability can contribute to optimizing the fabrication of oxide TFT-based circuits for electronic applications.

Polylactic acid (PLA) stands as a promising material, sourced from renewables and exhibiting biodegradability-albeit under stringent industrial composting settings. A primary challenge impeding PLA's broad applications is its inherent brittleness, as it fractures with minimal elongation despite its commendable tensile strength. A well-established remedy involves blending PLA with plasticizers. In this study, a range of organic carbonates-namely, 4-ethoxycarbonyloximethyl-[1,3]dioxolan-2-one (1), 4-methoxycarbonyloximethyl-[1,3]dioxolan-2-one (2), glycerol carbonate (3), and glycerol 1-acetate 2,3-carbonate (4)-were synthesized on a preparative scale (∼100 g), using renewable glycerol and CO2-derived diethyl carbonate (DEC) or dimethyl carbonate (DMC). Significantly, 1-4 exhibited biodegradability under ambient conditions within a week, ascertained through soil exposure at 25 °C-outpacing the degradation of comparative cellulose. Further investigations revealed 1's efficacy as a PLA plasticizer. Compatibility with PLA, up to 30 phr (parts per hundred resin), was verified using an array of techniques, including DSC, DMA, SEM, and rotational rheometry. The resulting blends showcased enhanced ductility, evident from tensile property measurements. Notably, the novel plasticizer 1 displayed an advantage over conventional acetyltributylcitrate (ATBC) in terms of morphological stability. Slow crystallization, observed in PLA/ATBC blends over time at room temperature, was absent in PLA/1 blends, preserving amorphous domain dimensions and mitigating plasticizer migration-confirmed through DMA assessments of aged and unaged specimens. Nevertheless, biodegradation assessments of the blends revealed that the biodegradable organic carbonate plasticizers did not augment PLA's biodegradation. The PLA in the blends remained mostly unchanged under ambient soil conditions of 25 °C over a 6 month period. This work underscores the potential of organic carbonates as both eco-friendly plasticizers for PLA and as biodegradable compounds, contributing to the development of environmentally conscious polymer systems.

Reevaluating the composition of the double metal cyanide catalyst (DMC) as a salt of (NC)6Co3- anions with 1:1 Zn2+/(X)Zn+ cations (X = Cl, RO, AcO), we prepared a series of well-defined DMCs, [ClZn+][Zn2+][(NC)6Co3-][ROH], [(RO)Zn+][Zn2+][(NC)6Co3-], [(AcO)Zn+][Zn2+][(NC)6Co3-], [(RO)Zn+]p[ClZn+](1-p)[Zn2+][(NC)6Co3-], [(AcO)Zn+]p[(tBuO)Zn+]q[Zn2+][(NC)6Co3-], and [(AcO)Zn+]p[(tBuO)Zn+]q[ClZn+]r[Zn2+][(NC)6Co3-]. The structure of [(MeOC3H6O)Zn+][Zn2+][(NC)6Co3-] was precisely determined at the atomic level through Rietveld refinement of the synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data. By evaluating the catalyst's performance in both propylene oxide (PO) polymerization and PO/CO2 copolymerization, a correlation between structure and performance was established on various aspects including activity, dispersity, unsaturation level, and carbonate fraction in the resulting polyols. Ultimately, our study identified highly efficient catalysts that outperformed the state-of-the-art benchmark DMC not only in PO polymerization [DMC-(OAc/OtBu/Cl)(0.59/0.38/0.15)] but also in PO/CO2 copolymerization [DMC-(OAc/OtBu)(0.95/0.08)].

Administering more than 10 times the therapeutic dose of insulin is extremely rare in diabetic dogs and is life threatening with hypoglycemia and seizures if not accompanied by appropriate treatment. A 15-year-old, castrated male miniature poodle dog managed for diabetes presented with depression, disorientation, ataxia, and cluster seizures. The dog had been administered 11.1 U/kg of neutral protamine hegadorn (NPH) insulin (10 times the prescribed dose) 3 h before the onset of symptoms. Blood analysis revealed hypoglycemia, with a circulating glucose level of <50 mg/dL. To treat the hypoglycemia-induced seizures, dextrose was repeatedly administered intravenously. Repeated generalized seizures were treated with anticonvulsants and intermittent mannitol. Since refractory hypoglycemia persisted 24 h after the insulin overdose, it was decided to proceed with glucagon treatment (15-30 ng/kg/min titrated to the blood glucose level after a loading dose of 50 ng/kg intravenous bolus infusion). After 37 h of glucagon treatment, blood glucose levels stabilized. After entering a hyperglycemic state, NPH insulin was administered to manage insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. This is the first case documented of successful treatment with glucagon, anticonvulsants and intermittent mannitol for refractory hypoglycemia and seizure caused by fatal insulin overdose. Thus, it has great clinical value in veterinary medicine.

High-performance oxide transistors have recently attracted significant attention for use in various electronic applications, such as displays, sensors, and back-end-of-line transistors. In this study, we demonstrate atomically thin indium-oxide (InOx) semiconductors using a solution process for high-performance thin-film transistors (TFTs). To achieve superior field-effect mobility and switching characteristics in TFTs, the bandgap and thickness of the InOx were tuned by controlling the InOx solution molarity. As a result, a high field-effect mobility and on/off-current ratio of 13.95 cm2 V-1 s-1 and 1.42 × 1010, respectively, were achieved using 3.12-nanometer-thick InOx. Our results showed that the charge transport of optimized InOx with a thickness of 3.12 nm is dominated by percolation conduction due to its low surface roughness and appropriate carrier concentration. Furthermore, the atomically thin InOx TFTs showed superior positive and negative gate bias stress stabilities, which are important in electronic applications. The proposed oxide TFTs could provide an effective means of the fabrication of scalable, high-throughput, and high-performance transistors for next-generation electronic applications.

The interest in low processing temperature for printable transistors is rapidly increasing with the introduction of a new form factor in electronics and the growing importance of high throughput. This paper reports the fabrication of low-temperature-processable enhancement-mode amorphous oxide thin-film transistors (TFTs) using the solution process. A facile low-pressure annealing (LPA) method is proposed for the activation of indium oxide (InOx) semiconductors at a significantly low processing temperature of 200 °C. Thermal annealing at a pressure of about ~10 Torr induces effective condensation in InOx even at a low temperature. As a result, the fabricated LPA InOx TFTs not only functioned in enhancement mode but also exhibited outstanding switching characteristics with a high on/off current ratio of 4.91 × 109. Furthermore, the LPA InOx TFTs exhibit stable operation under bias stress compared to the control device due to the low concentration of hydroxyl defects.

Purpose: To investigate the endothelial heterogeneity across distinct vascular beds in the inner and outer blood-retinal barriers. Methods: We evaluated the molecular, cellular, and functional differences between primary human retinal endothelial cells (HRECs) and human choroidal endothelial cells (HCECs) in terms of angiogenic and vasculogenic properties, permeability, and transcytosis. Tube formation assay, cell migration assay, in vitro permeability assay, microfluidic sprouting assay, and transcriptome analysis were performed. Results: HRECs showed higher proliferation and migration activity than did HCECs, whereas the tube formation ability was similar between HRECs and HCECs. Under angiogenic stimuli, HCECs displayed earlier sprouting angiogenesis, but the overall speed was faster and more stable in HRECs. HRECs expressed higher levels of adherens junctional proteins, whereas the tight junctional genes and transcytosis-related genes were more highly expressed in HCECs. Angiopoietin-2 was predominantly expressed in HRECs, but vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptors were more strongly expressed in HCECs. Platelet-derived growth factor subunit B (PDGFB) was more highly expressed in HRECs, which correlates to the lower degree of pericyte coverage in choroidal blood vessels. Conclusions: Retinal and choroidal ECs showed significant cellular and molecular heterogeneities that correlated with their functional characteristics. Retinal ECs are vasculogenic with high migratory characteristics and faster angiogenic sprouting, and they are more responsive to VEGF-induced permeability. In contrast, choroidal ECs express high levels of transcytosis genes, and they are vasculogenic, rather proliferative, adept in generating tip cells, and less responsive to VEGF-induced permeability.

Background and Objectives: The purpose of this study is to assess the long-term maintenance of each approach of sinus elevation, the crestal approach and lateral approach, by comparing the radiographic results of each technique. Materials and Methods: In total, 103 patients who had undergone an implant procedure with either the crestal approach or lateral approach method applied to their maxillary molar edentulous area were included. Using orthopantomographs, the radiographic changes were consistently evaluated over 3 years after the procedure (immediately after procedure and 1 year, 2 years and 3 years after implant placement) Results: The radiographic evaluation after 3 years of implantation with sinus elevation showed a significant amount of bone formation (8.07 mm for crestal approach and 12.00 mm for lateral approach method). The largest amount of grafted height loss occurred during the 1 year, but the resorption was minimal (0.98 mm for crestal approach and 0.95 mm for lateral approach method) over the entire 3 years. Conclusions: Although the lateral approach showed more bone growth, the amount of bone resorption was similar to that of the crestal approach. Both methods showed the highest amount of bone resorption in the first year, and the amount of change thereafter was insignificant. It is judged that both methods can be used according to the situation to help implant placement.

Grignard reagents featuring carbanion characteristics are mostly unreactive toward alkyl halides and require a catalyst for the coupling reaction. With the need to prepare p-(CH2=CH)C6H4CH2CH2CH2Cl on a large scale, the coupling reaction of p-(CH2=CH)C6H4MgCl with BrCH2CH2CH2Cl was attempted to screen the catalysts, and CuCN was determined to be the best catalyst affording the desired compound in 80% yield with no formation of Wurtz coupling side product CH2=CHC6H4-C6H4CH=CH2. The p-(CH2=CH)C6H4Cu(CN)MgCl species was proposed as an intermediate based on the X-ray structure of PhCu(CN)Mg(THF)4Cl. p-ClC6H4MgCl did not react with sterically encumbered R3SiCl (R = n-Bu or n-octyl). However, the reaction took place with the addition of 3 mol % CuCN catalyst, affording the desired compound p-ClC6H4SiR3. The structures of p-(CH2=CH)C6H4CH2CH2CH2MgCl and p-ClC6H4MgCl were also elucidated, which existed as an aggregate with MgCl2, suggesting that some portion of the Grignard reagents were possibly lost in the coupling reaction due to coprecipitation with the byproduct MgCl2. R3SiCl (R = n-Bu or n-octyl) was also prepared easily and economically with no formation of R4Si when SiCl4 was reacted with 4 equiv of RMgCl. Using the developed syntheses, [p-(CH2=CH)C6H4CH2CH2CH2]2Zn and iPrN[P(C6H4-p-SiR3)2]2, which are potentially useful compounds for the production of PS-block-PO-block-PS and 1-octene, respectively, were efficiently synthesized with substantial cost reductions.

BACKGROUND: Melatonin receptors are present in the human skin and retina. These receptors can be stimulated by light emitting diodes (LEDs) at specific wavelengths, thereby inducing cutaneous photorejuvenation. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of LEDs at specific wavelengths on melatonin membrane receptor (MT1) and cutaneous photorejuvenation via the MT1 pathway in vitro. METHODS: Normal human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) were irradiated using LEDs at different wavelengths (410~940 nm) at a dose of 1 J/cm². MT1 activity was evaluated after melatonin stimulation and LED irradiation. Thereafter, the expressions of collagen (COL) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), with and without luzindole (MT1/2 receptor antagonist), were investigated via semi-quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR), real-time PCR, western blotting, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: In HDFs, the MT1 mRNA and protein levels increased significantly in response to melatonin (dose, 50 nM) (p<0.01) and LED irradiation at 595, 630, 850, and 940 nm (p<0.01). LED irradiation up-regulated COL type I and down-regulated MMP-1. Compared to LED irradiation without luzindole, LED irradiation with luzindole produced no significant increase in COL type I mRNA and protein levels (p<0.01). CONCLUSION: We found that LED irradiation induces collagen synthesis and MMP-1 inhibition in HDFs via MT1 activation. Additionally, multiple LED wavelengths (595, 630, 850, and 940 nm) stimulated MT1 in HDFs, unlike in the eyes, where only blue light induced plasma melatonin suppression. This suggests the possibility of the melatoninergic pathway in photorejuvenation.

The interleukin-1 receptor-related kinase 4 (IRAK4), downstream of myd88, plays an essential role in hyperactive TLR signalling seen in some B-cell lymphomas. In particular, efficient IRAK4 inhibitors of activated B-cell subtype of human diffuse large B-Cell lymphoma (DLBCL) are being developed. However, the anticancer effect of IRAK-4 inhibitors in veterinary medicine has not been elucidated. It is therefore explored in this study involving the GL-1 and CL-1 canine lymphoma cell lines in vitro. MyD88 expression was analysed using polymerase chain reaction. GL-1 and CL-1 cells were subjected to concentration- and time-dependent treatment with an IRAK-4 inhibitor and assessed for viability, TLR signalling association and apoptosis using a cell counting Kit-8 assay, Western blotting and flow cytometry. The GL-1 and CL-1 cells exhibited enhanced MyD88 expression, however, canine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (cPBMCs) did not. The IRAK-4 inhibitor reduced cell viability in a dose- and time-dependent manner, significantly reduced the phosphorylation of molecules associated with TLR signalling at IC50 such as IRAK1, IRAK4, NF-κB and STAT3, and induced apoptosis in GL-1 and CL-1 cells. The anticancer effect of the IRAK-4 inhibitor on canine lymphoma cells is mediated by apoptosis via downregulation of TLR signalling.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is characterized by chronic, relapsing skin inflammation (eczema) with itchy sensation. Keratinocytes, which are located at the outermost part of our body, are supposed to play important roles at the early phase of type 2 inflammation including AD pathogenesis. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether keratinocytes-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS) could be produced by the allergens or non-allergens, and the keratinocytes-derived ROS could modulate a set of biomarkers for type 2 inflammation of the skin. METHODS: Normal human epidermal keratinocytes (NHEKs) were treated with an allergen of house dust mites (HDM) or a non-allergen of compound 48/80 (C48/80). Then, biomarkers for type 2 inflammation of the skin including those for neurogenic inflammation were checked by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and western immunoblot experiments. RESULTS: HDM or C48/80 was found to upregulate expression levels of our tested biomarkers, including type 2 T helper-driving pathway (KLK5, PAR2, and NFκB), epithelial-cell-derived cytokines (thymic stromal lymphopoietin, interleukin [IL]-25, IL-33), and neurogenic inflammation (NGF, CGRP). The HDM- or C-48/80-induced expression levels of the biomarkers could be blocked by an antioxidant treatment with 5 mM N-acetyl-cysteine. In contrast, pro-oxidant treatment with 1 mM H2O2 could upregulate expression levels of the tested biomarkers in NHEKs. CONCLUSION: Our results reveal that keratinocytes-derived ROS, irrespective to their origins from allergens or non-allergens, have a potential to induce type 2 inflammation of AD skin.

Background and Objectives: In this study, we attempted to determine the effects of acupuncture on cardiac remodeling and atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence rates in patients with AF after electrical cardioversion (EC). Materials and Methods: We randomly assigned 44 patients with persistent AF to an acupuncture group or a sham acupuncture group. An electroacupuncture treatment session was administered once weekly for 12 weeks at four acupuncture points (left PC5, PC6, ST36, and ST37). Results: Among the 44 recruited participants, 16 (treatment group) and 15 (control group) completed the trial. The three-month AF recurrence rate (primary outcome) was not significantly different between the two groups. Following the completion of treatment, patients who had been treated with acupuncture had a significant reduction in left atrial volume index (42.2 ± 13.9 to 36.1 ± 9.7 mL/m2; p = 0.028), whereas no change in atrial size was observed in the sham acupuncture group. No serious adverse events were observed. The AF recurrence rate and cardiac function did not differ significantly between the two groups. At three months, the acupuncture treatment group showed more favorable atrial structural remodeling compared to the sham acupuncture group. Conclusion: In future research on acupuncture in AF management, it is recommended that the inclusion criteria be amended to include only symptomatic AF, that an appropriate control group is designed, and that the acupuncture treatment frequency is increased to several times per week.

Autoimmune diseases are clinical syndromes that result from pathogenic inflammatory responses driven by inadequate immune activation by T- and B-cells. Although the exact mechanisms of autoimmune diseases are still elusive, genetic factors also play an important role in the pathogenesis. Recently, with the advancement of understanding of the immunological and molecular basis of autoimmune diseases, gene modulation has become a potential approach for the tailored treatment of autoimmune disorders. Gene modulation can be applied to regulate the levels of interleukins (IL), tumor necrosis factor (TNF), cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 (CTLA-4), interferon-γ and other inflammatory cytokines by inhibiting these cytokine expressions using short interfering ribonucleic acid (siRNA) or by inhibiting cytokine signaling using small molecules. In addition, gene modulation delivering anti-inflammatory cytokines or cytokine antagonists showed effectiveness in regulating autoimmunity. In this review, we summarize the potential target genes for gene or immunomodulation in autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and multiple sclerosis (MS). This article will give a new perspective on understanding immunopathogenesis of autoimmune diseases not only in animals but also in human. Emerging approaches to investigate cytokine regulation through gene modulation may be a potential approach for the tailored immunomodulation of some autoimmune diseases near in the future.

INTRODUCTION: Rhinitis and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) are different diseases, but have some similar risk factors. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to compare the risk factors and clinical biomarkers for rhinitis and OSAS in children. METHODS: We examined 3917 children (age 4-13 years) who were enrolled in a cross-sectional study conducted in Seongnam, Korea. Their parents completed the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire (PSQ) for evaluation of OSAS and the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire for evaluation of rhinitis. Clinical biomarkers, including total eosinophil count and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), were measured in a subset of these children. RESULTS: OSAS and rhinitis had prevalences of 4.0% and 43.5%, respectively. Body mass index (P < 0.001) and prematurity (P = 0.016) were significantly associated with OSAS, but not with rhinitis. Higher parental education and income increased the risk for rhinitis, but decreased the risk for OSAS. Having more siblings and birth by Cesarean delivery decreased the risk for rhinitis, but living in a new household increased the risk for rhinitis. A short distance of the residence to a main road during pregnancy significantly increased the risk of OSAS. Males, increased exposure to mould, and firstborns had increased risk of OSAS and rhinitis. The NLR was higher in OSAS patients than in those with allergic rhinitis (P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: OSAS and rhinitis shared some risk factors, whereas other factors had inverse association with the two disorders. These results imply that different strategies might be used for prevention of rhinitis and OSAS.

The pollution status of particulate matter (PM) in a subway system and technological trends in their reduction were discussed in this study. The levels of PM2.5 and PM10 are generally found to be higher in the underground platforms and tunnels than those in the outdoor air. It has also been reported that the composition of fine dust in the subway consists of various substances including heavy metals (like Fe), carbonaceous matter, and solvent extractable organic matter (SEOM). It was confirmed that subway dust was created mainly by wearing on wheels, rails, and brakes. In addition, the concentration of PM in such environment was influenced not only by internal factors (eg, operating conditions of trains and ventilation systems, number of passengers, and the structure of subway stations) but also by outside factors (eg, ambient air concentration). Up to now, various techniques (ventilation fans, platform screen doors (PSDs), magnetic filters, small jet fans, artificial intelligent ventilation systems, hybrid filters, etc) have been studied to reduce PM in underground subway systems. In this study, we reviewed the air quality of major subway stations with the focus on PM and relevant technologies for its reduction.

The development of new anticoagulants is an important goal for the improvement of thrombosis treatment. Recent studies have suggested the importance of thrombin inhibitors in the modulation of thromboembolic disorders. The aim of this study was to discover a new small-molecule thrombin inhibitor. In this study, the compound JJ1, which has a novel scaffold, was selected by structure-based docking simulation to determine its potential inhibitory activity against thrombin. JJ1 was shown to inhibit the catalytic activity of human α-thrombin with a K i of 0.019 µM by direct binding to the active site and with at least 10,000-fold selectivity relative to that reported for the inhibition of other biologically important serine proteases. JJ1 prolonged clotting times (activated partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time) and inhibited the activity and production of thrombin. Furthermore, it inhibited thrombin-catalyzed fibrin polymerization and platelet aggregation. Similar to its in vitro antithrombotic activities, JJ1 showed enhanced antithrombotic effects in an in vivo pulmonary embolism and arterial thrombosis model. It also exhibited anticoagulant effects in mice. Collectively, these results demonstrated that JJ1 was a potent, direct, and selective thrombin inhibitor that may be useful in the management of various thrombotic disorders.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this trial is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of electroacupuncture in the treatment of acute decompensated heart failure compared with sham electroacupuncture. METHODS: This protocol is for a randomized, sham controlled, patient- and assessor-blinded, parallel group, single center clinical trial that can overcome the limitations of previous trials examining acupuncture and heart failure. Forty-four acute decompensated heart failure patients admitted to the cardiology ward will be randomly assigned into the electroacupuncture treatment group (n = 22) or the sham electroacupuncture control group (n = 22). Participants will receive electroacupuncture treatment for 5 days of their hospital stay. The primary outcome of this study is the difference in total diuretic dose between the two groups during hospitalization. On the day of discharge, follow-up heart rate variability, routine blood tests, cardiac biomarkers, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) level, and N-terminal pro b-type natriuretic peptide (NT-pro BNP) level will be assessed. Four weeks after discharge, hs-CRP, NT-pro BNP, heart failure symptoms, quality of life, and a pattern identification questionnaire will be used for follow-up analysis. Six months after discharge, major cardiac adverse events and cardiac function measured by echocardiography will be assessed. Adverse events will be recorded during every visit. DISCUSSION: The result of this clinical trial will offer evidence of the effectiveness and safety of electroacupuncture for acute decompensated heart failure. OBJECTIVE: Exploring clinically effective methods to reduce ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury in humans is critical. Several drugs have shown protective effects, but studies using other interventions have been rare. Electroacupuncture (EA) has induced similar protection in several animal studies but no study has investigated how the effects could be translated and reproduced in humans. This study aimed to explore the potential effect and mechanisms of EA in IR-induced endothelial dysfunction in humans. METHODS: This is a prospective, randomized, crossover, sham-controlled trial consisting of two protocols. Protocol 1 was a crossover study to investigate the effect of EA on IR-induced endothelial dysfunction. Twenty healthy volunteers were randomly assigned to EA or sham EA (sham). Flow mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery (BA), nitroglycerin-mediated endothelial independent dilation, blood pressure before and after IR were measured. In protocol 2, seven volunteers were administered COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib (200 mg orally twice daily) for five days. After consumption, volunteers underwent FMD before and after IR identical to protocol 1. RESULTS: In protocol 1, baseline BA diameter, Pre-IR BA diameter and FMD were similar between the two groups (p = NS). After IR, sham group showed significantly blunted FMD (Pre-IR: 11.41 ± 3.10%, Post-IR: 4.49 ± 2.04%, p < 0.001). However, EA protected this blunted FMD (Pre-IR: 10.96 ± 5.30%, Post-IR: 9.47 ± 5.23%, p = NS, p < 0.05 compared with sham EA after IR). In protocol 2, this protective effect was completely abolished by pre-treatment with celecoxib (Pre-IR: 11.05 ± 3.27%; Post-IR: 4.20 ± 1.68%, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: EA may prevent IR-induced endothelial dysfunction via a COX-2 dependent mechanism.

Low molecular weight fucoidan (LMF) has been reported to possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Thus, we examined the effects of LMF extracted from Undaria pinnatifida on dermal wounds. Five round dermal wounds were created on the dorsal back of rats, and they were then treated topically with distilled water (DW), Madecasol Care™ (MC) or LMF at 200, 100 and 50 mg/mL, twice a day for a week. There were dose-dependent increases in wound contraction in the groups receiving LMF but not in the MC group, compared with the DW. Histopathological examination revealed that LMF treatment accelerated wound healing, which was supported by increases in granular tissue formation on day four post-treatment but a decrease on day seven, accompanied by an evident reduction in inflammatory cells. In the LMF-treated wounds, collagen distribution and angiogenesis were increased in the granular tissue on days four and seven post-treatment. Immunoreactive cells for transforming growth factor-ß1, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 or matrix metalloproteinases 9 were also increased, probably due to tissue remodeling. Furthermore, LMF treatment reduced lipid peroxidation and increased antioxidant activities. These suggested that LMF promotes dermal wound healing via complex and coordinated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and growth factor-dependent activities.
