Upwelling phenomena alter the physical and chemical parameters of the sea's subsurface waters, producing low levels of temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen, which can seriously impact the early developmental stages of marine organisms. To understand how upwelling can affect the encapsulated development of the gastropod Acanthina monodon, capsules containing embryos at different stages of development (initial, intermediate and advanced) were exposed to upwelling conditions (pH = 7.6; O2 = 3 mg L-1; T° = 9 °C) for a period of 7 days. Effects of treatment were determined by estimating parameters such as time to hatching, number of hatchlings per capsule, percentage of individuals with incomplete development, and shell parameters such as shell shape and size, shell strength, and the percentage of the organic/inorganic content. We found no significant impacts on hatching time, number of hatchlings per capsule, or percentage of incomplete development in either the presence or absence of upwelling, regardless of developmental stage. On the other hand, latent effects on encapsulated stages of A. monodon were detected in embryos that had been exposed to upwelling stress in the initial embryonic stage. The juveniles from this treatment hatched at smaller sizes and with higher organic content in their shells, resulting in a higher resistance to cracking 30 days after hatching, due to greater elasticity. Geometric morphometric analysis showed that exposure to upwelling condition induced a change in the morphology of shell growth in all post-hatching juveniles (0-30 days), regardless of embryonic developmental stage at the time of exposure. Thus, more elongated shells (siphonal canal and posterior region) and more globular shells were observed in newly hatched juveniles that had been exposed to the upwelling condition. The neutral or even positive upwelling exposure results suggests that exposure to upwelling events during the encapsulated embryonic phase of A. monodon development might not have major impacts on the future juvenile stages. However, this should be taken with caution in consideration of the increased frequency and intensity of upwelling events predicted for the coming decades.

Over the last decades, climate change has intensified. Temperatures have increased and seawater has become "fresher" in Antarctica, affecting fish such as Harpagifer antarcticus. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate changes in the osmoregulatory response of the Antarctic notothenioid fish Harpagifer antarcticus and evaluate how it will cope with the future climate change and environmental conditions in the Antarctic, and in the hypothetical case that its geographical distribution will be extended to the Magellanes region. The present study was undertaken to determine the interaction between temperature and salinity tolerance (2 °C and 33 psu as the control group, the experimental groups were 5, 8, and 11 °C and 28 and 23 psu) and their effect on the osmoregulatory status of H. antarcticus. We evaluated changes in gill-kidney-intestine NKA activity, gene expression of NKAα, NKCC, CFTR, Aquaporins 1 and 8 in the same tissues, muscle water percentage, and plasma osmolality to evaluate osmoregulatory responses. Plasma osmolality decreased with high temperature, also the gill-kidney-intestine NKA activity, gene expression of NKA α, NKCC, CFTR, Aquaporins 1, and 8 were modified by temperature and salinity. We demonstrated that H. antarcticus can not live in the Magallanes region, due to its incapacity to put up with temperatures over 5 °C and with over 8 °C being catastrophic.

Oncorhynchus kisutch is the third most cultivated salmonid species in the Chilean salmon industry and its farming conditions are characterised by high stocking density leading to the generation of high levels of organic matter (food - feces) and decomposition. In addition to the increasingly frequent hypoxic oceanographic events, these inappropriate farming conditions increase the demand for oxygen within the fish farm pen and lead to the appearance of hypoxic events that are harmful to fish.This study aimed to evaluate the stress response (cortisol) and transcription of genes involved in the immune response in head kidney and spleen of Oncorhynchus kisutch subjected to chronic hypoxic stress conditions. The fish were exposed to 100%, 60%, 50%, 35%, and 25% of DO for 28 days, then the blood (plasma), head kidney and spleen were removed. We observed mortality in the 25% DO group at days 15 and 20. Plasma cortisol increased significantly under 35% and 25% DO conditions compared to control. Transcription of Toll-like receptors (TLR1, TLR5M, TLR8, and TLR9) and cytokines (IL-1ß, IL6, IL10, TNF-α) increased in the head kidney only in the 50% DO group, while in spleen there was an increase of these markers in the conditions of 60%, 35%, and 25% DO. As for the markers involved in cell-mediated immunity, CD4-MHCII and CD8-MHCI do not have a clear expression pattern, although there was down-regulation in MHCII transcription in the head kidney, in all the hypoxia conditions evaluated. Finally, IgM transcription was increased in the spleen in all hypoxia conditions, although it wasn't always statistically significant compared to the control. These results indicate that chronic hypoxia induces the stress response, increasing plasma cortisol levels and modulating the transcription of genes involved in the innate and adaptive immune response. The expression patterns were tissue-specific, indicating that the degree of hypoxia differentially affects the transcription of genes involved in the immune response of Oncorhynchus kisutch.

The physiological and behavioural responses of ectotherms to temperature is strongly dependent on the individuals' previous thermal history. Laboratory based studies investigating the mechanisms of thermoregulation in marine ectotherms, however, rarely consider key temporal elements of thermal exposure, such as the rate at which temperature changes. We tested the hypothesis that juvenile seahorses, Hippocampus erectus, from a tropical coastal lagoon in Yucatan, Mexico, would exhibit variations in physiological and behavioural descriptors of thermoregulation when submitted to contrasting regimes during 30 days: temperature constant at 25 °C (C 25); gradually increasing 1 °C every 5 days from 25 to 30 °C (GI 25-30); and constant at 30 °C (C 30). Immediately after exposure, critical maximum temperature, thermal preference, oxygen consumption, partial energy balance, growth rate and survival of seahorses were measured. Seahorses exposed to GI 25-30 showed a significantly higher critical thermal maxima (37.8 ±â€¯0.9 °C), preference (28.7 ±â€¯0.4 °C), growth (1.10 ±â€¯0.49%) and survival (97.6%) than those exposed to C 30 (36.5 ±â€¯1, 29.4 ±â€¯0.3 °C, 0.48 ±â€¯0.32%, 73.8%, respectively). Both high temperature regimes induced metabolic depression, but ramping resulted in a greater amount of energy assimilated (278.9 ±â€¯175.4 J g-1 day-1) and higher energy efficiency for growth (89.8%) than constant exposure to 30 °C (115.4 ±â€¯63.4 J g-1 day-1, 65.3%, respectively). Gradually increasing temperature allowed physiological mechanisms of thermal adjustment to take place, reflecting the capacity of juvenile H. erectus to respond to environmental change. Despite its advantage, this capacity is limited in time, since the cumulative effect of thermal exposure affected metabolic performance, eventually compromising survival. The study of seahorse response to thermal variations in the context of ocean warming needs to consider the temporal elements of thermal exposure to foresee its vulnerability under future scenarios.

We report on a coherent beam combination of three high-brightness tapered amplifiers, which are seeded by a single-frequency laser at λ = 976 nm in a simple architecture with efficiently cooled emitters. The maximal combined power of 12.9 W is achieved at a combining efficiency of > 65%, which is limited by the amplifiers' intrinsic beam quality. The coherent combination cleans up the spatial profile, as the central lobe's power content increases by up to 86%. This high-brightness infrared beam is converted into the visible by second harmonic generation. This results in a high non-linear conversion efficiency of 4.5%/W and a maximum power over 2 W at 488 nm, which is limited by thermal effects in the periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN).

Aquaculture is currently one of the best prospects to help meet the growing need for protein in the human diet. However, aquaculture development and production result in consequences for the environment and also impact other productive activities. Salmon and trout cage culture has required the use of large quantities of pharmaceuticals in order to control outbreaks and the persistence of different pathogens, including sea lice (parasitic copepods), which cause economic losses of around 0.39 €â€¯Kg-1 of salmon produced. The pharmaceuticals currently used for the control of sea lice (cypermethrin, deltamethrin, azamethiphos, hydrogen peroxide) are applied by in situ immersion treatments, enclosing net pens using tarpaulin and then bathing fish with the pharmaceutical. After treatment the pharmaceuticals are released into the surrounding environment, exposing non-target species. Although the effects of such pharmaceutical exposure has been studied in some species, to date a systematic and exhaustive review of these potential effects has not yet been performed. In this study, an exhaustive review of the literature evaluating lethal and sub-lethal effects of anti-sea lice pharmaceuticals on non-target crustaceans and bivalves was performed, in order to assess the extent of the effects, toxicity, variables affecting such toxicity and identify potential synergistic effects previously unexplored. Our results show clear negative effects at concentrations lower than those used in treatments against sea lice in all of the species studied. Likewise, this study demonstrates knowledge gaps that need to be addressed in order to improve our understanding of the effects of these pharmaceuticals on non-target species, ecosystems in general and other productive activities.

We report on the first Q^{2}-dependent measurement of the beam-normal single spin asymmetry A_{n} in the elastic scattering of 570 MeV vertically polarized electrons off ^{12}C. We cover the Q^{2} range between 0.02 and 0.05 GeV^{2}/c^{2} and determine A_{n} at four different Q^{2} values. The experimental results are compared to a theoretical calculation that relates A_{n} to the imaginary part of the two-photon exchange amplitude. The result emphasizes that the Q^{2} behavior of A_{n} given by the ratio of the Compton to charge form factors cannot be treated independently of the target nucleus.

RESUMO

A DBR tapered diode laser in continuous wave operation was used to generate second-harmonic radiation at 589 nm in a PPMgO:LN ridge waveguide crystal. An optical output power of 0.86 W at an optical-to-optical and an electrical-to-optical efficiency of 42% and 11%, respectively, was achieved. The visible radiation was characterized by a spectral bandwidth ΔνFWHM of 230 MHz and a beam propagation parameter M1/e22 better than 1.1. The integration of such a system into a housing of a small footprint will enable a portable and highly efficient module featuring a visible output power in the watt-level range.

Using an AlGaInP-based truncated tapered power amplifier, it was possible to boost the output power of a 647-nm distributed Bragg reflector laser from 50 mW to more than 500 mW. The light source has the potential to replace bulky Kr ion lasers still in use at this wavelength.

RESUMO

High-power distributed Bragg reflector tapered diode lasers (DBR-TPLs) at 1180 nm were developed based on highly strained InGaAs quantum wells. The lasers emit a nearly diffraction-limited beam with more than two watts with a narrow spectral width. These features are believed to make this type of diode laser a key component for the manufacturing of miniaturized laser modules in the yellow and orange spectral range by second-harmonic generation to cover a spectral region currently not accessible with direct emitting diode lasers. Future applications might be the laser-cooling of sodium, high-resolution glucose-content measurements, as well as spectroscopy on rare earth elements.

In this work, frequency doubling of a passively mode-locked 3.5 mm long monolithic distributed Bragg reflector diode laser is investigated experimentally. At 1064 nm, optical pulses with a duration of 12.4 ps are generated at a repetition rate of 13 GHz and a peak power of 825 mW, resulting in an average power of 133 mW. Second-harmonic generation is carried out in a periodically poled MgO-doped LiNbO3 ridge waveguide at a normalized nonlinear conversion efficiency of 930%/W. A maximum average second-harmonic power of 40.9 mW, corresponding to a pulse energy of 3.15 pJ, is reached in the experiment at an opto-optical conversion efficiency of 30.8%. The normalized nonlinear conversion efficiency in mode-locked operation is more than 2 times larger compared to continuous-wave operation.

RESUMO

Single-mode lasers below 630 nm are still realized using complex laser systems. We present distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) ridge waveguide lasers (RWL) based on AlGaInP. When packaged into sealed TO-3 housings and cooled internally to about 0°C the DBR-RWL emit more than 50 mW at a wavelength of 626.0 nm into a nearly diffraction-limited single longitudinal mode with a spectral width below 1 MHz. These new monolithic diode lasers have the potential to drastically miniaturize existing set-ups e.g. for quantum information processing.

We demonstrate laser cooling of trapped beryllium ions at 313 nm using a frequency-doubled extended cavity diode laser operated at 626 nm, obtained by cooling a ridge waveguide diode laser chip to -31°C. Up to 32 mW of narrowband 626 nm laser radiation is obtained. After passage through an optical isolator and beam shaping optics, 14 mW of 626 nm power remains of which 70% is coupled into an external enhancement cavity containing a nonlinear crystal for second-harmonic generation. We produce up to 35 µW of 313 nm radiation, which is subsequently used to laser cool and detect 6×10(2) beryllium ions, stored in a linear Paul trap, to a temperature of about 10 mK, as evidenced by the formation of Coulomb crystals. Our setup offers a simple and affordable alternative for Doppler cooling, optical pumping, and detection to presently used laser systems.

RESUMO

Red-emitting ridge waveguide lasers with integrated tenth order surface distributed Bragg reflector gratings were developed. The grating was implemented by the use of a BCl3-Ar-plasma, while the shape of the grating trench was controlled by additional He-backside cooling of the wafer. The devices exhibit longitudinal single mode operation up to 96 mW at 635.3 nm with a side mode suppression ratio of 18 dB and a good beam quality of M2<3. The spectrum is free of mode hops for a span of more than 55 pm.

For the 2009 influenza A (H1N1) pandemic, vaccination and infection control were the main modes of prevention. A live attenuated H1N1 vaccine mimics natural infection and works by evoking a host immune response, but currently there are no easy methods to measure such a response. To determine if an immune response could be measured in exhaled breath, exhaled nitric oxide (FE(NO)) and other exhaled breath volatiles using selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) were measured before and daily for seven days after administering the H1N1 2009 monovalent live intranasal vaccine (FluMist®, MedImmune LLC) in nine healthy healthcare workers (age 35 ± 7 years; five females). On day 3 after H1N1 FluMist® administration there were increases in FE(NO) (MEAN±SEM: day 0 15 ± 3 ppb, day 3 19 ± 3 ppb; p < 0.001) and breath isoprene (MEAN±SEM: day 0 59 ± 15 ppb, day 3 99 ± 17 ppb; p = 0.02). MS analysis identified the greatest number of changes in exhaled breath on day 3 with 137 product ion masses that changed from baseline. The exhaled breath changes on day 3 after H1N1 vaccination may reflect the underlying host immune response. However, further work to elucidate the sources of the exhaled breath changes is necessary.

The (2)H(e,e'p)n cross section at a momentum transfer of 3.5 (GeV/c)(2) was measured over a kinematical range that made it possible to study this reaction for a set of fixed missing momenta as a function of the neutron recoil angle θ(nq) and to extract missing momentum distributions for fixed values of θ(nq) up to 0.55 GeV/c. In the region of 35°≤θ(nq)≤45° recent calculations, which predict that final-state interactions are small, agree reasonably well with the experimental data. Therefore, these experimental reduced cross sections provide direct access to the high momentum component of the deuteron momentum distribution in exclusive deuteron electrodisintegration.

We manufactured and investigated distributed Bragg reflector ridge-waveguide diode lasers having sixth-order surface gratings and an emission wavelength around 974 nm. The single-mode output power of the lasers with a total length of 4 mm exceeded 1 W. A very small spectral linewidth of 1.4 MHz (3 dB) consisting of a Lorentzian part of 146 kHz and a Gaussian part of 1308 MHz was measured using a self-delayed heterodyne measurement technique.

We present experimental results of the first high-precision test of quark-hadron duality in the spin-structure function g_{1} of the neutron and 3He using a polarized 3He target in the four-momentum-transfer-squared range from 0.7 to 4.0 (GeV/c);{2}. Global duality is observed for the spin-structure function g_{1} down to at least Q;{2}=1.8 (GeV/c);{2} in both targets. We have also formed the photon-nucleon asymmetry A1 in the resonance region for 3He and found no strong Q2 dependence above 2.2 (GeV/c);{2}.

We measured the angular dependence of the three recoil-proton polarization components in two-body photodisintegration of the deuteron at a photon energy of 2 GeV. These new data provide a benchmark for calculations based on quantum chromodynamics. Two of the five existing models have made predictions of polarization observables. Both explain the longitudinal polarization transfer satisfactorily. Transverse polarizations are not well described, but suggest isovector dominance.

We report on a precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in fixed target electron-electron (Møller) scattering: A(PV) = [-131 +/- 14(stat) +/- 10(syst)] x 10(-9), leading to the determination of the weak mixing angle sin2(thetaW(eff) = 0.2397 +/- 0.0010(stat) +/- 0.0008(syst), evaluated at Q2 = 0.026 GeV2. Combining this result with the measurements of sin2(thetaW(eff) at the Z0 pole, the running of the weak mixing angle is observed with over 6sigma significance. The measurement sets constraints on new physics effects at the TeV scale.
