RESUMO

To evaluate the intraosseous biocompatibility of AH Plus, EndoREZ, and Epiphany root canal sealers as recommended by the Technical Report #9 of the Fédération Dentaire Internationale (FDI). Thirty guinea pigs, 10 for each material, divided into experimental periods of 4 and 12 weeks, received one implant on each side of the lower jaw symphysis. At the end of the observation periods, the animals were killed and the specimens prepared for routine histological examination. After analyzing both periods, the inflammatory tissue reaction to EndoREZ was considered severe. In the AH Plus group, the reaction changed from severe to moderate, while it was observed biological compatibility to Epiphany with bone formation and none to slight inflammatory reaction. It was concluded that Epiphany root canal sealer was the only material that presented intraosseous biocompatibility within the two analyzed periods.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate 50 human periapical lesions for bacteria and epithelium in a case study in dental practice. STUDY DESIGN: Specimens were obtained from the extraction of 50 untreated teeth that had lesions attached to their apices. The specimens were histologically evaluated using serial sections. RESULTS: Bacteria were found in all teeth, colonizing necrotic tissue in the main canal, dentinal tubules, or apical ramifications, and in the body of the periapical lesion in 18 abscesses or cysts. Twenty-one lesions were epithelialized; 14 abscesses, 20 granulomas, and 16 cysts were distinguished. In 18 root canals inflamed tissue was found in the apical part of the canal. A single foramen was present in 13 cases while apical ramifications were found in 37 cases. CONCLUSIONS: Granulomas were most common, and most epithelialized lesions were cysts. Bacteria were only detected periapically in abscesses or cysts. Inflamed tissue was present in the apical root canal in one third of cases.

RESUMO

Placement of orifice plugs has been suggested to augment the seal of conventional root canal fillings. This study assessed in vivo the efficacy of white mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) plugs in preventing periapical inflammation subsequent to coronal inoculation of root-filled teeth. The two-rooted mandibular premolars of six beagle dogs were conventionally prepared and filled with gutta-percha and sealer. A white MTA orifice plug was placed into one canal in each tooth. Pulp chambers were inoculated with plaque except for 12 teeth (negative control), and restored. Radiographs were taken at regular intervals. At 10 months, dogs were killed and jaw blocks processed for histology. None of the roots revealed radiographic or histologic evidence of severe inflammation. Mild inflammation was observed in 17% and 39% of the roots with and without an orifice plug, respectively (McNemar, p > 0.05). Without development of severe inflammation, the seal augmentation efficacy of MTA orifice plugs could not be determined.
