RESUMO

True north can be determined on Earth by three means: magnetic compasses, stars, and via the global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), each of which has its own drawbacks. GNSS are sensitive to jamming and spoofing, magnetic compasses are vulnerable to magnetic interferences, and the stars can be used only at night with a clear sky. As an alternative to these methods, nature-inspired navigational cues are of particular interest. Celestial polarization, which is used by insects such as Cataglyphis ants, can provide useful directional cues. Migrating birds calibrate their magnetic compasses by observing the celestial rotation at night. By combining these cues, we have developed a bioinspired optical method for finding the celestial pole during the daytime. This method, which we have named SkyPole, is based on the rotation of the skylight polarization pattern. A polarimetric camera was used to measure the degree of skylight polarization rotating with the Sun. Image difference processes were then applied to the time-varying measurements in order to determine the north celestial pole's position and thus the observer's latitude and bearing with respect to the true north.

Due to their high specific surface area and advanced properties, TiO2 nanotubes (TiO2 NTs) have a great significance for production and storage of energy. In this paper, TiO2 NTs were synthesized from anodization of Ti-6Al-4V alloy at 60 V for 3 h in fluoride ethylene glycol electrolyte by varying the water content and further annealing treatment. The morphological, structural, optical and electrochemical performances of TiO2 NTs were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Visible spectroscopy and electrochemical characterization techniques. By varying the water content in the solution, a honeycomb and porous structure was obtained at low water content and the presence of (α + ß) phase in Ti-6Al-4V alloy caused not uniform etching. With an additional increase in water content, a nanotubular structure is formed in the (α + ß) phases with different morphological parameters. The anatase TiO2 NTs synthesized with 20 wt% H2O shows an improvement in absorption band that extends into the visible region due the presence of vanadium oxide in the structure and the effective band gap energy (Eg) value of 2.25 eV. The TiO2 NTs electrode also shows a good cycling performance, delivering a reversible capacity of 82 mAh.g-1 (34 µAh.cm-2.µm-1) at 1C rate over 50 cycles.

A simple double thin-film coating-based device is proposed to quantify the ethanol content in humid air featuring a 10 ppm resolution and spanning a dynamic range from 0 to 1000 ppm. The transduction involves the measurement of the direct optical reflection intensity, changing upon refractive index variations induced by water and ethanol adsorption within the coatings. The first thin-film coating is a microporous methyl-functionalized, silica xerogel material more sensitive to alcohol, and the second one is a microporous pure silica xerogel material more sensitive to water. The precision of the sensor is achieved through a mathematical treatment applied on the time resolved adsorption period. Reflection signals of both the ethanol- and water-sensitive coatings are taken into account in the treatment to correct for differences in ambient conditions (temperature, relative humidity, presence of volatile organic compounds) within the same chamber previous to data analysis, which corresponds to realistic operating conditions. As the adsorption mechanism is governed by molecular dynamic equilibrium, these sensors are fast and instantaneously regenerated in ambient air. The sensor is easy to assemble and was reusable for a period exceeding 1 year (maximal tested time).
