RESUMO

The development of nanoribbon-like structures is an effective strategy to harness the potential benefits of graphenic materials due to their excellent electrical properties, advantageous edge sites, rapid electron transport, and large specific area. Herein, parallel and connected magnetic nanostructured nanoribbons are obtained through the synthesis of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) using NiCl2 as a precursor with potential applications in nascent electronic and magnetic devices. Several analytical techniques have been used for the thorough characterization of the modified surfaces. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) shows the characteristic topographical features of the nanoribbons. While X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy provided information on the chemical state of Ni and graphene-like structures, magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (SKPFM) confirmed the preferential concentration of Ni onto rGO nanoribbons. These results indicate that the synthesized material shows 1D ordering of nickel nanoparticles (NiNPs)-decorating tiny rGO flakes into thin threads and the subsequent 2D arrangement of the latter into parallel ribbons following the topography of the HOPG basal plane.

RESUMO

PtPd bimetallic catalysts supported on hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) with different porous sizes were developed for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) toward fuel cell applications. The HPC pore size was controlled by using SiO2 nanoparticles as a template with different sizes, 287, 371, and 425 nm, to obtain three HPC materials denoted as HPC-1, HPC-2, and HPC-3, respectively. PtPd/HPC catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The electrochemical performance was examined by cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry. PtPd/HPC-2 turned out to be the most optimal catalyst with an electroactive surface area (ESA) of 40.2 m2 g-1 and a current density for ORR of -1285 A g-1 at 2 mV s-1 and 1600 rpm. In addition, we conducted a density functional theory computational study to examine the interactions between a PtPd cluster and a graphitic domain of HPC, as well as the interaction between the catalyst and the oxygen molecule. These results reveal the strong influence of the porous size (in HPC) and ESA values (in PtPd nanoparticles) in the mass transport process which rules the electrochemical performance.

RESUMO

The current environmental situation requires taking actions regarding processes for energy production, thus promoting renewable energies, which must be complemented with the development of routes to reduce pollution, such as the capture and storage of CO2. Graphene materials have been chosen for their unique properties to be used either as electrocatalyst or as catalyst support (mainly for non-noble metals) that develop adequate efficiencies for this reaction. This review focuses on comparing experimental and theoretical results of the electrochemical reduction reaction of carbon dioxide (ECO2RR) described in the scientific literature to establish a correlation between them. This work aims to establish the state of the art on the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide on graphene-based catalysts.

RESUMO

The increasing demand for raising the reliability of electronic contacts has led to the development of methods that protect metal surfaces against atmospheric corrosion agents. This severe problem implies an important economic cost annually but small amounts of corrosion inhibitors can control, decrease or avoid reactions between a metal and its environment. In this regard, surfactant inhibitors have displayed many advantages such as low price, easy fabrication, low toxicity and high inhibition efficiency. For this reason, in this article, the spectroelectrochemical behavior of polycrystalline gold electrode modified by reverse micelles (water/polyethyleneglycol-dodecylether (BRIJ 30)/n-heptane) is investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), potentiodynamic methods and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Main results indicate a strong adsorption of a monolayer of micelles on the gold substrate in which electron tunneling conduction is still possible. Therefore, this method of increasing the corrosion resistance of gold contacts is usable only in conditions of long-term storage but not in the operation of devices with such contacts. In this regard, the micelle coating must be removed from the surface of the gold contacts before use. Finally, the aim of the present work is to understand the reactions occurring at the surfactant/metal interface, which may help to improve the fabrication of novel electrodes.

RESUMO

Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is increasing worldwide regardless of culture, genetic, gender, and geographic differences. While multiple individual risk factors, such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia, can cause cardiovascular disease (CVD), it is the intercurrence of these risk factors that defines MetS as a cluster that creates an environment for atherosclerosis and other manifestations of CVD. Despite the advances in the knowledge and management of each of the components of MetS, there are two molecular biology processes, chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, which are still underdiagnosed and undertreated. In order to assess the effect of a dietary supplement on chronic inflammation in MetS, we conducted a clinical trial with volunteers receiving a formula composed of resveratrol, piperine and alpha tocopherol (FRAMINTROL®), together with their habitual treatment, for three months. The inflammatory state was evaluated by ultrasensitive C reactive protein (US CRP) and ferritin in plasma, and oxygen consumption and chemiluminescence in neutrophils. The results showed that ferritin decreased by 10% (p < 0.05), US-CRP by 33% (p < 0.0001), oxygen consumption by 55% (p < 0.0001), and spontaneous chemiluminiscence was by 25% (p < 0.005) after treatment. As far as we know, this is the first study showing a chronic inflammation decrease in MetS patients due to the administration of a biopower Resveratrol-piperine and alpha tocopherol dietary supplement together with conventional therapy.

RESUMO

The target species (Aphia minuta and Pseudaphya ferreri) of the transparent goby fishery on Mallorca Island (Balearic Islands, western Mediterranean) are currently discarded when the maximum daily catch is exceeded or when the sorting process is unworkable. The mortality suffered by this discarded fraction remains unknown, although it may be important for resource management. Accordingly, the aims of this study were to (1) assess the environmental drivers of the relative post-release survival of the discarded target species and (2) test the correlations between post-release survival and two behavior-related variables (swimming speed and its increase after a stimulus, assessed via video recording). To do so, mortality of the target species from 47 hauls sampled under normal fishing boat operations was monitored when the gear was onboard and after a few hours. At the reference level (an average depth of 25.7 m and temperature of 15.7 ºC), the immediate survival was 99.9% (95% CI: 97.9 to 100%), but the estimated post-release survival decreased to 47.2% (33.8 to 65.8%). Relative post-release mortality doubled when the water temperature increased by 2.8 ºC or when the fishing depth increased up to 32 m. Furthermore, the swimming speed of the target species was significantly correlated with the estimated post-release survival; thus, this vitality metric may offer a promising strategy for more easily estimating post-release mortality in other fisheries.

RESUMO

Telephone helplines is an effective method for helping patients with chronic diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The objective of this cross-sectional multicenter study was to assess reasons for consultation by patients with IBD to a nurse-led telephone service. The sample included 7,273 IBD patients from 6 public hospitals in Barcelona, Spain. Data collected included calls registered during 50 working days including caller characteristics, reason for consultation, patient's diagnosis, and action recommended. The most common reasons for consultation were suspicion of relapse, doubts regarding medication, drug monitoring, side effects, visit appointment, and request of test results. In 63.7% of cases, telephone calls were solved solely by nurses, and in 35.9% in collaboration with a physician. Patient's questions were resolved via telephone in 89.3%. Findings from this study add support of the nurse's role for providing an effective telephone service for resolution of a wide range of patient queries in IBD. Helplines managed by IBD nurses may be a key element for patient-centered care.

RESUMO

Biomass grown in wastewater treatment photobioreactors is a cheap raw material with high contents of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids. This work studies the production of fermentable monosaccharides from three biomasses grown in piggery wastewater (P), domestic wastewater (W) and synthetic medium (S) by applying chemical pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis, using a Taguchi design. ANOVA identified temperature, chemical reagent type and chemical reagent concentration as significant operational parameters. However, the biomass concentration, pretreatment time, enzyme dosage and enzymatic hydrolysis time had no remarkable effect. The bacterial content of the biomass had no relevant impact on carbohydrate and protein solubilisation but had a remarkable effect on the degradation of the released carbohydrates (57, 60 and 37% for P, W and S), while also affecting lipid solubilisation. Pretreatment with HCl 2 M at 120 °C resulted the optimal conditions, achieving a monosaccharide recovery of 53, 59 and 80% for P, W and S biomasses, respectively.

RESUMO

In the Balearic Islands, different trammel net designs have been adopted to promote fisheries sustainability and reduce discards. Here, we compare the catch performance of three trammel net designs targeting the spiny lobster Palinurus elephas in terms of biomass, species composition and revenue from commercial catches and discards. Designs differ in the netting fiber type (standard polyfilament, PMF, or a new polyethylene multi-monofilament, MMF) and the use of a guarding net or greca, a mesh piece intended to reduce discards. Catches were surveyed by an on-board observer from 1,550 netting walls corresponding to 70 nets. The number of marketable species captured indicated that the lobster trammel net fishery has multiple targets, which contribute significantly to the total revenue. The discarded species ranged from habitat-forming species to elasmobranches, but the magnitude of gear-habitat interactions on the long term dynamics of benthos remains unclear. No relevant differences in revenue and weight of discards were detected after Bayesian analyses. However, the species composition of discards was different when using greca. Interestingly, high immediate survival was found for discarded undersized lobsters, while a seven day survival assessment, using captive observation, gave an asymptotic estimate of survival probability as 0.64 (95% CI [0.54-0.76]). Therefore, it is recommended that it would be beneficial for this stock if an exemption from the EU landing obligation regulation was sought for undersized lobsters in the Balearic trammel net fishery.

RESUMO

Direct ethanol fuel cells are one of the most promising electrochemical energy conversion devices for portable, mobile and stationary power applications. However, more efficient and stable and less expensive electrocatalysts are still required. Interestingly, the electrochemical performance of the electrocatalysts toward the ethanol oxidation reaction can be remarkably enhanced by exploiting the benefits of structural and compositional sensitivity and control. Here, we describe the synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical behavior of cubic Pt-Sn nanoparticles. The electrochemical activity of the cubic Pt-Sn nanoparticles was found to be about three times higher than that obtained with unshaped Pt-Sn nanoparticles and six times higher than that of Pt nanocubes. In addition, stability tests indicated the electrocatalyst preserves its morphology and remains well-dispersed on the carbon support after 5000 potential cycles, while a cubic (pure) Pt catalyst exhibited severe agglomeration of the nanoparticles after a similar stability testing protocol. A detailed analysis of the elemental distribution in the nanoparticles by STEM-EELS indicated that Sn dissolves from the outer part of the shell after potential cycling, forming a ∼0.5 nm Pt skin. This particular atomic composition profile having a Pt-rich core, a Sn-rich subsurface layer, and a Pt-skin surface structure is responsible for the high activity and stability.

RESUMO

Methane production from pretreated and raw mixed microalgae biomass grown in pig manure was evaluated. Acid and basic pretreatments provided the highest volatile solids solubilisation (up to 81%) followed by alkaline-peroxide and ultrasounds (23%). Bead milling and steam explosion remarkably increased the methane production rate, although the highest yield (377 mL CH4/g SV) was achieved by alkali pretreatment. Nevertheless, some pretreatments inhibited biogas production and resulted in lag phases of 7-9 days. Hence, experiments using only the pretreated solid phase were performed, which resulted in a decrease in the lag phase to 2-3 days for the alkali pretreatment and slightly increased biomass biodegradability of few samples. The limiting step during the BMP test (hydrolysis or microbial inhibition) for each pretreatment was elucidated using the goodness of fitting to a first order or a Gompertz model. Finally, the use of digestate as biofertilizer was evaluated applying a biorefinery concept.

RESUMO

Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are electrochemical devices that efficiently produce electricity and are characterized by a large flexibility for portable applications and high energy density. Methanol crossover is one of the main obstacles for DMFC commercialization, forcing the search for highly electro-active and methanol tolerant cathodes. In the present work, carbon-supported Pd and PdFe catalysts were synthesized using a sodium borohydride reduction method and physico-chemically characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray techniques such as photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX). The catalysts were investigated as DMFC cathodes operating at different methanol concentrations (up to 10 M) and temperatures (60 °C and 90 °C). The cell based on PdFe/C cathode presented the best performance, achieving a maximum power density of 37.5 mW·cm-2 at 90 °C with 10 M methanol, higher than supported Pd and Pt commercial catalysts, demonstrating that Fe addition yields structural changes to Pd crystal lattice that reduce the crossover effects in DMFC operation.

RESUMO

PtSn-based catalysts are one of the most active materials toward that contribute ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). In order to gain a better understanding of the Sn influence on the carbon monoxide (principal catalyst poison) and ethanol oxidation reactions in acidic media, a systematic spectroelectrochemical study was carried out. With this end, carbon-supported PtSnx (x = 0, 1/3 and 1) materials were synthesized and employed as anodic catalysts for both reactions. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIRS) and differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) indicate that Sn diminishes the amount of bridge bonded CO (COB) and greatly improves the CO tolerance of Pt-based catalysts. Regarding the effect of Sn loading on the EOR, it enhances the catalytic activity and decreases the onset potential. FTIRS and DEMS analysis indicate that the C-C bond scission occurs at low overpotentials and at the same potential values regardless of the Sn loading, although the amount of C-C bond breaking decreases with the rise of Sn in the catalytic material. Therefore, the elevated catalytic activity toward the EOR at PtSn-based electrodes is mainly associated with the improved CO tolerance and the incomplete oxidation of ethanol to form acetic acid and acetaldehyde species, causing the formation of a higher amount of both C2 products with the rise of Sn loading.

RESUMO

To achieve complete oxidation of ethanol (EOR) to CO2, higher operating temperatures (often called intermediate-T, 150-200 °C) and appropriate catalysts are required. We examine here titanium oxycarbide (hereafter TiOxCy) as a possible alternative to standard carbon-based supports to enhance the stability of the catalyst/support assembly at intermediate-T. To test this material as electrocatalyst support, a systematic study of its behavior under electrochemical conditions was carried out. To have a clear description of the chemical changes of TiOxCy induced by electrochemical polarization of the material, a special setup that allows the combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical measurements was used. Subsequently, an electrochemical study was carried out on TiOxCy powders, both at room temperature and at 150 °C. The present study has revealed that TiOxCy is a sufficiently conductive material whose surface is passivated by a TiO2 film under working conditions, which prevents the full oxidation of the TiOxCy and can thus be considered a stable electrode material for EOR working conditions. This result has also been confirmed through density functional theory (DFT) calculations on a simplified model system. Furthermore, it has been experimentally observed that ethanol molecules adsorb on the TiOxCy surface, inhibiting its oxidation. This result has been confirmed by using in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIRS). The adsorption of ethanol is expected to favor the EOR in the presence of suitable catalyst nanoparticles supported on TiOxCy.

RESUMO

The faradaic efficiency of CO2 electroreduction is significantly affected by the thickness of Pd nanoshells on Au cores. The ratio of hydrogen evolution to CO2 reduction was determined by differential electrochemical mass spectrometry. Decreasing the Pd shell thickness from 10 to 1 nm leads to a twofold increase in faradaic efficiency.

RESUMO

Small atomic gold clusters in solution, Au n , stabilized by tetrabutyl ammonium bromide (TBABr), have been synthesized by a simple electrochemical technique, based on the anodic dissolution of a gold electrode in the presence of TBABr salt, and using acetronitrile as solvent. The presence of clusters in the range Au3-Au11 were detected by MALDI-TOF spectroscopy, and further characterized by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, TEM, AFM, X-ray diffraction, and cyclic voltammetry. Clusters display a semiconductor behavior with a band edge of approximately 2.5 eV. We report here their extraordinarily high electrocatalytic activity toward the O2 reduction reaction in acid solutions, which can explain Zhang's results, showing that a four-electron mechanism seems to occur because of the facile reduction of H2O2 on gold clusters compared to bulk gold or larger gold nanoparticles.
