BACKGROUND: Little is known about the effects of different seasons on the cryopreservation success of buffalo sperm in terms of kinematics and sperm functional parameters. OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of three seasons (winter, comfort and summer) and cryopreservation on sperm kinematics and functional properties in buffalo bulls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Semen ejaculates (n = 90) collected during three seasons i.e. winter (n = 30), comfort (n = 30), summer (n = 30) were evaluated for sperm kinematics and functional properties. RESULTS: Sperm kinematics with respect to total (TM), progressive (PM) and rapid motility (RM) was higher (P < 0.05) in fresh sperm compared to sperm that had been frozen-thawed. Similarly, all kinematic parameters [viz. average path velocity (VAP), straight linear velocity (VSL), curvilinear velocity (VCL), beats cross frequency (BCF), lateral head displacement (ALH), linearity (LIN) and straightness (STR)] were higher (P < 0.01) at the fresh stage. With respect to season, frozen-thawed semen TM (57.67 ± 115 %), PM (50.2 ± 1.15 %) and RM (51.6 ± 1.19 %) were higher (P < 0.01) when using sperm collected during winter. The stage of cryopreservation (i.e., equilibration and freeze-thawing) also showed significant effects (P < 0.01) on mitochondrial superoxide positive status (MSPS), mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), acrosome status and intra-cellular calcium status. CONCLUSION: The season of sperm collection and cryopreservation have significant effects on buffalo bull sperm kinematics and functional properties. Doi.org/10.54680/fr24410110612.

Global trends show that the rapid increase in maize production is associated more with the expansion of maize growing areas than with rapid increases in yield. This is possible through achieving possible higher productivity through maize production practices intensification to meet the sustainable production. Therefore, a field experiment on "Ecological intensification of climate-resilient maize-chickpea cropping system" was conducted during consecutive three years from 2017-2018 to 2019-2020 at Main Agricultural Research Station, Dharwad, Karnataka, India. Results of three years pooled data revealed that ecological intensification (EI) treatment which comprises of all best management practices resulted in higher grain yield (7560 kg/ha) and stover yield compared to farmers' practice (FP) and all other treatments which were deficit in one or other crop management practices. Similarly, in the succeeding winter season, significantly higher chickpea yield (797 kg/ha) was recorded in EI. Further EI practice recorded significant amount of soil organic carbon, available nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, and iron after completion of third cycle of experimentation (0.60%, 235.3 kg/ha,21.0 kg/ha,363.2 kg/ha,0.52 ppm and 5.2 ppm respectively). Soil enzymatic activity was also improved in EI practice over the years and improvement in each year was significant. Lower input energy use was in FP (17,855.2 MJ/ha). Whereas total output energy produced was the highest in EI practice (220,590 MJ ha-1) and lower output energy was recorded in EI-integrated nutrient management (INM) (149,255 MJ/ha). Lower energy productivity was noticed in EI-INM. Lower specific energy was recorded in FP and was followed by EI practice. Whereas higher specific energy was noticed is EI-INM. Each individual year and pooled data showed that EI practice recorded higher net return and benefit-cost ratio. The lower net returns were obtained in EI-integrated weed management (Rs. 51354.7/ha), EI-recommended irrigation management (Rs. 56,015.3/ha), integrated pest management (Rs. 59,569.7/ha) and farmers' practice (Rs. 67,357.7/ha) which were on par with others.

Small non-coding RNAs called microRNAs (miRNAs) control the expression of genes post-transcriptionally. Their correlation with commercial economic traits including milk, meat and egg production, as well as their effective role in animal productivity, fertility, embryo survival and disease resistance, make them significant in livestock research. The miRNAs exhibit distinct spatial and temporal expression patterns, offering insights into their functional roles within cells and tissues. Aberrant miRNA production can disrupt vital cellular processes and genetic networks, contributing to conditions like metabolic disorders and viral diseases. These short RNA molecules are present in extracellular fluids, displaying remarkable stability against RNA degradation enzymes and extreme environmental conditions. miRNAs preservation is facilitated through packaging in lipid vesicles or complex formation with RNA-binding proteins. Numerous studies have illuminated the roles of miRNAs in diverse physiological processes, including embryonic stem cell differentiation, haematopoietic stem cell proliferation and differentiation and the coordinated development of organ systems. The integration of miRNA profiling, next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics analysis paves the way for transformative advancements in livestock research and industry. The present review underscores the applications of miRNAs in livestock, showcasing their potential to improve breeding strategies, diagnose diseases and enhance our understanding of fundamental biological processes.

This study was attempted to estimate the genetic parameters of semen quality traits in buffalo bulls. The study data consisted of 10975 ejaculates from 45 Murrah buffalo bulls (aged 24-72 months) used for breeding program during year 2010 to 2020. Semen quality traits (ejaculate volume, concentration of sperm, mass activity, initial and post-thaw motility, number of sperms per ejaculate, motile sperm number and discard rates) were studied. It was observed that average ejaculate volume was 2.82 ± 1.45 mL with mean concentration of 1040.12 ± 523.26 million/mL. Higher heritability was observed for number of sperms per ejaculate, number of motile sperm and sperm concentration. Significant phenotypic correlation was obtained between volume and number of sperms per ejaculate as well as volume and number of motile sperms. Likewise, significant phenotypic correlation was evident between sperm concentration with sperm number per ejaculate. Highest phenotypic correlation was obtained between sperm count per ejaculate and motile sperm count. Estimated genetic trends showed significant change in volume and motile sperm number. In conclusion, this study ascertains that genetic parameters of semen traits can be considered during the selection of buffalo bulls in breeding program.

This study aimed to investigate the incidence and effect of non-genetic factors on reproductive disorders in the Hardhenu cattle population over a period of 11 years (2010-2021). The study included a total of 1340 cattle for calculating the incidence of reproductive disorders and analysed the occurrence of different reproductive disorders. In the present study, retention of placenta had highest frequency, accounting for approximately 18.36% of the incidence, followed by repeater cows (11.19%), metritis (6.27%), dystocia (0.60%), anestrus (0.45%) and prolapse (0.37%). Chi-square analysis revealed a significant relationship between the year and the incidence of reproductive disorders (p < .05). Logistic regression analysis of temporal variability of reproductive disorders was also analysed, with an increase in the odds from 2014 to 2020, peaking in 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. Logistic regression analysis showed that season and parity did not significantly influence the incidence of reproductive disorders. However, period of calving had a significant impact. Cows calving between 2008 and 2014 had a significantly lower odds ratio (0.13, 95% CI: 0.06-0.30), indicating a decreased risk, while those calving between 2014 and 2017 had a higher odds ratio (0.59, 95% CI: 0.38-0.90), suggesting an increased risk of reproductive disorders. Compared to parity 3, parity 1 (1.344, 95% CI: 0.869-2.08) and parity 2 (1.193, 95% CI: 0.768-1.851) showed highest odds ratio. Similarly, the odds ratio for winter (1.64, 95% CI: 0.93-2.89), summer (1.71, 95% CI: 0.89-3.26) and rainy season (1.64, 95% CI: 0.92-2.91) was higher as compared to autumn. The present results provided valuable insights into the incidence of various reproductive disorders and associated risk factors in Hardhenu cattle. These results can be utilized for targeted interventions to enhance reproductive health and overall productivity in dairy cattle.

The present study investigated the presence of CXCR1 gene polymorphisms and their association with clinical mastitis, reproductive disorders and performance traits in Hardhenu cattle. Genotyping of the targeted SNP rs211042414 (C>T) at the g.106216468 loci of the CXCR1 gene was performed through PCR amplification and Bsa1 restriction enzyme digestion. The genotypic frequencies revealed three genotypes: CC, CT and TT, with the C allele being the most prevalent. Significant associations were found between the targeted SNP and clinical mastitis occurrence using chi-square and logistic regression analyses. The CC genotype showed higher susceptibility to clinical mastitis with a higher odds ratio of 3.47 compared to TT (1.00) and CT (2.90) genotypes (p < .05). Furthermore, least squares analysis revealed significant associations between genotypes and performance traits such as total milk yield, 305-day milk yield and peak yield (p < .05). The CC genotype exhibited higher milk yields than CT and TT genotypes, indicating a positive association between the C allele and increased milk production. These findings have practical implications for the genetic improvement of Hardhenu cattle. Incorporating the identified CXCR1 gene polymorphisms into existing selection criteria can help enhance disease resistance and milk production traits. However, further validation with a larger sample size is necessary to strengthen the observed associations and ensure their practical applicability.

The human gut microbiota plays a significant role in the pathophysiology of central nervous system-related diseases. Recent studies suggest correlations between the altered gut microbiota and major depressive disorder (MDD). It is proposed that normalization of the gut microbiota alleviates MDD. The imbalance of brain-gut-microbiota axis also results in dysregulation of the hypothalamicpituitary- adrenal (HPA) axis. This imbalance has a crucial role in the pathogenesis of depression. Treatment strategies with certain antibiotics lead to the depletion of useful microbes and thereby induce depression like effects in subjects. Microbiota is also involved in the synthesis of various neurotransmitters (NTs) like 5-hydroxy tryptamine (5-HT; serotonin), norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine (DA). In addition to NTs, the gut microbiota also has an influence on brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels. Recent research findings have exhibited that transfer of stress prone microbiota in mice is also responsible for depression and anxiety-like behaviour in animals. The use of probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics and proper diet have shown beneficial effects in the regulation of depression pathogenesis. Moreover, transplantation of fecal microbiota from depressed individuals to normal subjects also induces depression-like symptoms. With the precedence of limited therapeutic benefits from monoamine targeting drugs, the regulation of brain-gut microbiota is emerging as a new treatment modality for MDDs. In this review, we elaborate on the significance of brain-gut-microbiota axis in the progression of MDD, particularly focusing on the modulation of the gut microbiota as a mode of treating MDD.

PURPOSE: The present study reports a very rare case of Trypanosoma theileri like infection in the peritoneal fluid of a 6-year-old female Holstein Friesian (HF) cattle brought to Veterinary Clinical Complex, Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (LUVAS), Hisar. The aim of the clinical study was to report an unusual case of T. theileri-like infection associated with peritonitis and its therapeutic management. METHODS: For confirmatory diagnosis, peritoneal fluid and blood sample was collected from animal for haemato-biochemical examination, buffy coat examination and detection of Trypanosoma antigen by monoclonal antibody-based latex agglutination test. RESULTS: Animal had history of anorexia, high fever, oedematous swelling on the abdominal area and decrease in milk yield since 1 week. Clinical examination revealed high fever, congested conjunctival mucus membrane and oedematous inflammatory swelling on the abdominal region. Haematological examination on Day 1 revealed relative neutrophilia and eosinophilia, whereas other parameters measured were on the lower side of normal range. Thin blood smear examination did not reveal any parasite on first attempt. However, after confirmation of Trypanosoma species in peritoneal fluid collected by FNAC, buffy coat examination of blood sample was also found positive for Trypanosoma species. On Day 2, haematological examination revealed neutrophilic leucocytosis, eosinophilia and anaemia. Blood sample was also found serologically positive for Trypanosoma antigen by monoclonal antibody based latex agglutination test. Biochemical examination revealed increased blood urea nitrogen (BUN), gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels, hyperglycemia, hyperprotienemia and decreased levels of sodium and chloride ions. Animal was primarily treated with isometamidium chloride (Nyzom®) @ 0.5 mg/kg body weight (IM, single dose) along with supportive therapy. CONCLUSION: Animal showed clinical recovery after 10 days of treatment. Post-recovery, blood sample of the animal was re-examined for parasite and other blood parameters and it was found negative for presence of Trypanosoma infection along with restoration of haematological values. Hence, the present study concludes the confirmatory diagnosis and therapeutic use of isometamidium hydrochloride along with anti-inflammatory drugs to Trypanosoma infection.

Despite the availability of COVID-19 vaccines, additional more potent vaccines are still required against the emerging variations of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). In the present investigation, we have identified a promising vaccine candidate against the Omicron (B.1.1.529) using immunoinformatics approaches. Various available tools like, the Immune Epitope Database server resource, and NetCTL-1.2, have been used for the identification of the promising T-cell and B-cell epitopes. The molecular docking was performed to check the interaction of TLR-3 receptors and validated 3D model of vaccine candidate. The codon optimization was done followed by cloning using SnapGene. Finally, In-silico immune simulation profile was also checked. The identified T-cell and B-cell epitopes have been selected based on their antigenicity (VaxiJen v2.0) and, allergenicity (AllerTOP v2.0). The identified epitopes with antigenic and non-allergenic properties were fused with the specific peptide linkers. In addition, the 3D model was constructed by the PHYRE2 server and validated using ProSA-web. The validated 3D model was further docked with the Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) and showed good interaction with the amino acids which indicate a promising vaccine candidate against the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2. Finally, the codon optimization, In-silico cloning and immune simulation profile was found to be satisfactory. Overall, the designed vaccine candidate has a potential against variant of SARS-Cov-2. However, further experimental studies are required to confirm.

OBJECTIVE: The present work aimed to obtain common effect sizes for the gene frequency and association of MspI derived variants of growth hormone (GH) gene with milk yield in dairy cows. METHODS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of 35 published studies identified in literature search from 2000 to 2020 (n = 4164). These studies were specific to fragment size (329) for genotypes viz., CC (224, 105 bp), CD (329, 224, 105 bp) and DD (329 bp). Pooled standard mean differences (SMDs) as effect sizes between allele pairs were derived using different genetic models. The heterogeneity between effects sizes across studies was estimated using I2 Index (%). RESULTS: The common effect size for gene frequency of allele C (224, 105 bp) was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in 2881 Bos taurus/cross cows (0.82; 95% CI: 0.74, 0.89; I2 = 97.81%) than 1283 Bos indicus cows (0.15; 95% CI: 0.12, 0.18; I2 = 71.90%), with overall gene frequency was 0.33 (95% CI: 0.21, 0.46; I2 = 99.29%). Additive (CC vs. DD) and dominant (CC + CD vs. DD) did not revealed significant (P > 0.05) association with milk yield. However, completely over dominant (CC + DD vs. CD) and recessive (CC vs. CD + DD) models showed significant (P < 0.05) and positive SMDs with milk yield specially at early lactations. There was no evidence of heterogeneity (I2 = 0.00%) between SMDs across studies. CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis suggested potential association of C allele for enhancing milk production of dairy cows.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (COVID-19) virus uses Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2) as a gateway for their entry into the human body. The ACE2 with cleaved products have emerged as major contributing factors to multiple physiological functions and pathogenic complications leading to the clinical consequences of the COVID-19 infection Decreased ACE2 expression restricts the viral entry into the human cells and reduces the viral load. COVID-19 infection reduces the ACE2 expression and induces post-COVID-19 complications like pneumonia and lung injury. The modulation of the ACE2-Ang (1-7)-Mas (AAM) axis is also being explored as a modality to treat post-COVID-19 complications. Evidence indicates that specific food components may modulate the AAM axis. The variations in the susceptibility to COVID-19 infection and the post-COVID its complications are being correlated with varied dietary habits. Some of the food substances have emerged to have supportive roles in treating post-COVID-19 complications and are being considered as adjuvants to the COVID-19 therapy. It is possible that some of their active ingredients may emerge as the direct treatment for the COVID-19.

The aim of the present paper was to summarize the gene polymorphisms of beta-lactoglobulin (BLG) gene and its effects on milk yield in 1840 genotyped Indian dairy cows reported in 17 published studies. The meta-analysis was undertaken using gene frequencies of individual studies under random effects model, whereas for association analysis of genotypes with milk yield, standardized mean differences (SMDs) along with 95% confidence interval (CI) were obtained under four genetic models such as additive (AA vs. BB), dominant (AA+AB vs. BB), completely over dominant (AA+BB vs. AB) and recessive (AA vs. AB+BB). The heterogeneity index (I2) was used to determine heterogeneity between studies. The results of meta-analysis suggested that the pooled allelic frequency of allele A was subsidiary as 0.29 (95% CI 0.24, 0.33, I2 = 88.54%) in targeted population, and also, it was non-significantly (P > 0.05) different between Bos indicus (0.28) and Bos taurus/cross cows (0.30). Egger's test indicated no risk of publication bias (P > 0.05). The results also revealed that BLG gene variants have non-significant (P > 0.05) association with milk yield under all genetic models. Although positive effects of SMDs under some models were observed, however, they failed to meet statistical significance (P > 0.05) due to high heterogeneity between studies which lead to conclusion of only uncertain influences of SNP genotypes with milk yield. It was concluded that BLG markers may not be beneficial for improving milk yield in Indian dairy cows. However, it is suggested that the revalidation of the present results should be done by using more number of studies.

Pravesh Dhiman, DNB (Medical Oncology).Background Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in women. Approximately 70% of patients with EOC are diagnosed in advanced stage [The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics(FIGO stage III and IV)] with an expected 5-year survival rate of 30%. Numerous studies have shown that survival with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) followed by interval debulking surgery (IDS) is noninferior to primary debulking surgery followed by chemotherapy. Materials and Methods In this retroprospective observational study, 50 patients with advanced ovarian cancer, diagnosed from January 2012 to January 2015, were included and followed-up till January 2017. Correlation of NACT with patient profile, CA125 levels, clinicopathologic parameters, progression-free survival (PFS), and treatment response was studied. Statistical analysis was performed using log-rank test and Kaplan-Meir survival plots. Results The extent of cytoreduction significantly correlated with PFS. The PFS was maximum in patients who had optimal cytoreduction (19 months) and 10 months in patients with suboptimal cytoreduction with p -value < 0.05. The survival was not significantly correlated with other parameters such as age, stage, preoperative CA125 levels, and ascites. Conclusions The extent of cytoreduction following NACT in this study was associated with statistically significant PFS advantage in patients who were able to undergo optimal cytoreduction, but not significantly correlated to other factors such as age, stage, preoperative CA125 levels, and ascites. NACT followed by interval cytoreduction is an important modality affecting survival in advanced EOC. Further studies and longer follow-up are needed to demonstrate survival advantage over standard treatment.

OBJECTIVES: To identify markers of left ventricular dysfunction in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the effects of diabetes mellitus on them. METHODS: This was a cross sectional study of 200 consecutive chronic kidney disease patients (stage III-V). Echocardiographic assessment of left ventricular function including left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), left ventricular mass index (LVMI), left atrial volume, grade of diastolic dysfunction, E/E', left and right ventricular myocardial performance indices (LVMPI, RVMPI) were compared between diabetic and non-diabetic CKD. RESULTS: LVMI significantly increased with increasing stage of CKD (p < 0.001) in both diabetics (158.82 ± 48.76 gm/m2 in stage III to 201.06 ± 63.62 gm/m2 in stage V) and non-diabetics (133.14 ± 43.06 gm/m2 stage III to 196.24 ± 58.75 gm/m2 in stage V). This was significantly higher among diabetics of similar CKD stage compared to non-diabetics (p = 0.001). The LVEF worsened with increasing stage of CKD (p = 0.002) and was significantly reduced in diabetic patients (LVEF 61.96 ± 8.48 % in stage III CKD to 51.62 ± 13.45 % in stage V CKD) (p < 0.001). Diastolic dysfunction (Grades ≥2) and LA volume increased significantly with stage of CKD (p < 0.001) and was higher among diabetics (p = 0.048). Pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) increased with increasing stage of CKD (p < 0.001), and was higher among diabetics (p = 0.035). E/E' worsened significantly with increasing stage of CKD and was also significantly higher in diabetics (p < 0.001). LVMPI (p < 0.001) and RVMPI (p < 0.001) were significantly reduced with worsening stage of CKD and in diabetics. CONCLUSION: Advancing CKD stage was linearly associated with progressive left ventricular dysfunction which was significantly greater in diabetics.

The present meta-analysis was carried to provide the more reliable estimates of gene frequency and association of Rsa 1 generated candidate genotype of prolactin gene within exon-3 with performance traits in 1198 Indian dairy cows using data from 15 published studies. Six genetic models viz., codominant (AA vs. AB, AA vs. BB and AB vs. BB), dominant (AA+AB vs. BB), completely over dominant (AA+BB vs. AB) and recessive (AA vs. AB+BB) were used to obtain standardized mean difference (SMD) between genotypes. Meta-analysis showed that the gene frequency of A allele (156 bp) was 0.60 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.54, 0.65). In association analysis, cows with AB genotype [SMD = 0.65, 95% CI 0.00, 1.30] had significantly (P < 0.05) higher lactation milk yield (LMY) as compared to BB genotype, whereas AA and AB genotypes had similar trend. Likewise, AA + AB also had larger effect [SMD = 2.31, 95% CI 0.21, 4.10] on LMY as compared to BB. Cows with AB genotype had significantly lower age at first calving (AFC) with small effect [SMD (AA vs. AB) = 1.38, 95% CI 0.06, 2.70] and medium effect [SMD (AB vs. BB) = - 3.83, 95% CI - 6.41, - 1.24] as compared to cows with AA and BB genotypes, respectively. This finding was confirmed under dominant and completely over dominant models. In case of fat%, AA genotype showed negative effect (SMD = - 0.51, 95% CI - 0.84, - 0.17) under recessive model. It was concluded that the propagation of allele A is promising to help dairy farmers to improve the genetic quality of their dairy cows.

Cell blocks and fine needle aspirations can be used for cytopathological diagnosis. Conventional fine needle aspiration smears provide limited material for diagnosis. The cell block technique provides more tissue, which improves diagnostic accuracy. We compared a modified cell block cytology to fine needle aspiration for providing optimal preservation of histochemical and immunocytochemical properties. We used 30 fine needle aspirates from oral lesions in two groups: group 1, fine needle aspiration cytology; group 2, cell block cytology. Smears of fine needle aspirates were stained with Papanicolaou. For the modified cell block technique, aspirated material was centrifuged to create a cell pellet, which then was fixed with Nathan alcohol formalin substitute. After routine histopathological processing, cell pellets were embedded in paraffin, then sectioned and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Sections were compared to Papanicolaou stained smears of fine needle samples. Cellular morphology and staining quality of modified cell block samples were superior to fine needle aspiration cytology; both methods exhibited distinct nuclear morphology. Modified cell blocks provide excellent cytopathologic features compared to fine needle aspiration cytology.

Due to the long half-life of 137Cs (t 1/2 ∼ 30 years), the selective extraction of cesium (Cs) from high level liquid waste is of paramount importance in the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle to avoid long term surveillance of high radiotoxic waste. As 1,3-di-octyloxycalix[4]arene-crown-6 (CC6) is suggested to be a promising candidate for selective Cs extraction, the improvement in the Cs extraction efficiency by CC6 has been investigated through the optimization of the effect of dielectric media on the extraction process. The effects of the feed acid (HNO3, HCl, and HClO4) and the composition of the diluents for the ligand in the organic phase on the extraction efficiency of Cs have been investigated systematically. In 100% n-octanol medium, Cs is found to form a 1 : 1 ion-pair complex with CC6 (0.03 M) providing a very high distribution ratio of D Cs ∼ 22, suggesting n-octanol as the most suitable diluent for Cs extraction. No significant interference of other relevant cations such as Na, Mg and Sr was observed on the D Cs value in the optimized solvent system. Density functional theory (DFT) based calculations have been carried out to elucidate the reason of ionic selectivity and enhanced Cs extraction efficiency of CC6 in the studied diluent systems. In addition to the ionic size-based selectivity of the crown-6 cavity, the polarity of the organic solvent system, the hydration energy of the ion, and the relative reorganization of CC6 upon complexation with Cs are understood to have roles in achieving the enhanced efficiency for the extraction of Cs by the CC6 extractant in nitrobenzene medium.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the total energy and micronutrient intakes of children 9-24 months of age and evaluate the probability of adequacy (PA) of the diet in seven MAL-ED sites. DESIGN: Cohort study. Food intake was registered monthly using 24-h recalls beginning at 9 months. We estimated PA for thirteen nutrients and overall mean PA (MPA) by site and 3-month periods considering estimated breast milk intake. SETTING: Seven sites in Asia, Africa and Latin America. PARTICIPANTS: 1669 children followed from birth to 24 months of age. RESULTS: Median estimated %energy from breast milk ranged from 4 to 70 % at 9-12 months, and declined to 0-39 % at 21-24 months. Iron bioavailability was low for all sites, but many diets were of moderate bioavailability for zinc. PA was optimal for most nutrients in Brazil and South Africa, except for iron and vitamin E (both), calcium and zinc (South Africa). PA for zinc increased only for children consuming a diet with moderate bioavailability. MPA increased 12-24 months as the quantity of complementary foods increased; however, PA for vitamin A remained low in Bangladesh and Tanzania. PA for vitamins D and E and iron was low for most sites and age groups. CONCLUSIONS: MPA increased from 12 to 24 months as children consumed higher quantities of food, while nutrient density remained constant for most nutrients. Ways to increase the consumption of foods containing vitamins D, E and A, and calcium are needed, as are ways to increase the bioavailability of iron and zinc.

Over the last decade, research has intensified worldwide on the use of low-temperature plasmas in medicine and healthcare. Researchers have discovered many methods of applying plasmas to living tissues to deactivate pathogens; to end the flow of blood without damaging healthy tissue; to sanitize wounds and accelerate its healing; and to selectively kill malignant cancer cells. This review paper presents the latest development of advanced and plasma-based technologies used for applications in neurology in particular. Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), an aided institute of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), has also developed various technologies in some of these areas. One of these is an Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet (APPJ). This device is being studied to treat skin diseases, for coagulation of blood at faster rates and its interaction with oral, lung, and brain cancer cells. In certain cases, in-vitro studies have yielded encouraging results and limited in-vivo studies have been initiated. Plasma activated water has been produced in the laboratory for microbial disinfection, with potential applications in the health sector. Recently, plasmonic nanoparticle arrays which allow detection of very low concentrations of chemicals is studied in detail to allow early-stage detection of diseases. IPR has also been developing AI-based software called DeepCXR and AIBacilli for automated, high-speed screening and detection of footprints of tuberculosis (TB) in Chest X-ray images and for recognizing single/multiple TB bacilli in sputum smear test images, respectively. Deep Learning systems are increasingly being used around the world for analyzing electroencephalogram (EEG) signals for emotion recognition, mental workload, and seizure detection.

BACKGROUND: The 90-day BCR-ABL1 (breakpoint cluster region-Abelson 1) level has been one of the accepted milestones for predicting the molecular response in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The rate of decline in BCR-ABL1 has been considered a better predictor of the response but has not been uniformly accepted. A paucity of evidence is available to predict the accuracy of the rate of decline in the Indian context. Therefore, we tested the accuracy of the rate of decline of BCR-ABL1 in predicting the molecular response compared with the single 90-day values in a retrospective cohort study of selected cancer centers in south India. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients with chronic-phase CML diagnosed from January 2013 to December 2018, the serial BCR-ABL1 levels were estimated at 0, 45, and 90 days, 6 months, and 1 year. Data on patient demographics, risk stratification assessed using the Sokal and EUTOS (European Treatment and Outcome Study) scores were extracted using a mobile-based data capture tool from the medical records of the enrolled patients. The halving time, determined by log reduction, was compared with the 90-day BCR-ABL1 values using the receiver operating characteristic curve for the major and complete molecular response at 6 months and 1 year as standards. Accuracy was determined from the area under the curve. The cutoff for the halving time was chosen to balance the sensitivity and specificity. RESULTS: The rate of decline had more predictive accuracy compared with the 90-day BCR-ABL1 values (area under the curve for rate of decline, 0.83; 90-day, 0.80). A halving time of < 20 days identified 95% of the patients who had achieved major molecular response at 12 months compared with 80% using the single 90-day BCR-ABL1 response. CONCLUSIONS: The halving time of BCR-ABL1 appears promising as a predictor of the outcomes for patients with CML.
