RESUMO

PURPOSE: To critically evaluate the evidence on knowledge changes observed after the application of evidence-based dentistry (EBD) educational interventions to dental students. METHODS: We included studies that assessed EBD knowledge after applying educational interventions to undergraduates. Studies that evaluated post-graduate students or professionals, that exclusively described educational interventions, programs, or the application of curriculum revisions were excluded. Electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science), unpublished gray literature, and manual searches were performed. Data concerning "perceived" and "actual knowledge" was extracted. The quality of the studies was appraised according to the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. RESULTS: The 21 selected studies enrolled students at different stages, and the intervention formats were diverse. The educational interventions could be categorized into three modalities, that is, regular, EBD-focused disciplines or courses, and other educational interventions including one or more of the EBD principles, methods, and/or practices. Despite the format, knowledge was generally improved after the implementation of educational interventions. Overall, perceived and actual levels of knowledge increased considering EBD general concepts, principles, and/or practices, and concerning the "acquire" and "appraise" skills. Among the selected studies, two were randomized controlled trials, while most were non-randomized or descriptive studies. CONCLUSIONS: EBD-related educational interventions seem to improve dental students' perceived and actual knowledge, according to literature with a high risk of bias. Therefore, more complete, methodologically rigorous, and longer-term studies are still recommended to confirm and expand the current knowledge.

Laser acupuncture can be used to treat neurosensory alterations and motor disorders caused by dental treatments. This study aimed to review the existing literature on the effects of laser acupuncture on neuropathies in the context of dentistry and to search for treatment modalities in which this technique is used. This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Cochrane Collaboration guidelines and the PICOS strategy. Randomized clinical trials that evaluated laser acupuncture as a primary intervention for facial neuropathy were included. We searched the database for relevant studies and manually searched the gray literature until April 2022, and finally included four studies. The study was considered eligible if it included patients with paresthesia, facial paralysis, or neuralgia, neuropathies within dentistry, and referred to the application of laser acupuncture as a treatment method. The risk of bias was assessed using the RoB 2 tool. It was observed that the recommended wavelengths ranged from 790 nm to 810 nm, with a frequency of at least two applications per week, and to a greater or lesser degree, all evaluated studies obtained an improvement in sensory or motor recovery of the facial nerves. The use of laser acupuncture presented itself as a viable alternative in dentistry for the treatment of paresthesia and facial paralysis due to its therapeutic potential in neuropathic treatment (CRD42022344339).

BACKGROUND: The aim of this in vivo study was to quantitatively evaluate pain after rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in young rats by analyzing the activation of nociception-related structures, that is, the caudalis, interpolaris, and oralis subnuclei, according to the Fos expression. METHODS: A total of 65 Wistar rats were assigned to three groups: control group (n = 15) with no treatment, positive control group (n = 25), and experimental group (n = 25) with RME. The experimental animals were euthanized at 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours after RME, and the brain was later carefully collected. Coronal sections through the spinal trigeminal caudalis, spinal trigeminal interpolaris, and spinal trigeminal oralis were cut (thickness of 40 µm) on a cryostat and processed for Fos immunohistochemistry. Images from the sections were captured under light microscopy, and ImageJ software was used to count Fos-like immunoreactive neurons. The Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey test were used for statistical analysis, and the significance level was set at 5%. RESULTS: RME induced incisor distalization and opening of the midpalatal suture, as well as neuronal activation of the spinal trigeminal nucleus. The experimental group demonstrated significantly more Fos-positive neurons in subnuclei caudalis and subnuclei interpolaris 6 hours after the maxillary expansion. The Fos immunoreactivity significantly decreased at 12 hours and increased again at 24 and 48 hours (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The RME increases the neural activation of brain regions involved in the nociception region, as determined by the Fos expression. The most intense Fos-like immunoreactive expression was detected in the brain 6 hours after the start of the palatal expansion.
