OBJECTIVE: To investigate the community integration of patients following stroke and determine the predictors of their level of community integration at 1-year follow-up. DESIGN: A multicenter, longitudinal, and observational study. SUBJECTS: Sixty-five inpatients (41 men) with a mean age of 56.9 (standard deviation = 17.0) years, who had their first stroke at least 1 month prior to this study were recruited from 4 rehabilitation inpatient wards in China. METHODS: In the initial assessment, the participants were evaluated using the Community Integration Questionnaire, the Fugl-Meyer Assessment, the Berg Balance Scale, the Modified Barthel Index, the Mini Mental State Examination, and the Modified Ashworth Scale. In the follow-up assessments, which were conducted via telephone no less than 1 year after discharge, the participants were evaluated using the Community Integration Questionnaire and also assessed for other disease-related conditions. RESULTS: The participants' scores on the Community Integration Questionnaire in the follow-up assessment were significantly greater than those at the initial assessment (p < 0.05). In addition, the participants' Community Integration Questionnaire scores in the follow-up assessment were significantly correlated with their ages, numbers of years of education, and Modified Barthel Index, Berg Balance Scale, Mini Mental State Examination scores in the initial assessment (p < 0.05), and marginally significantly correlated with their scores on Fugl-Meyer Assessment in the initial assessment (p = 0.058). The participants' ages, numbers of years of education, and Modified Barthel Index, Berg Balance Scale, Mini Mental State Examination, Fugl-Meyer Assessment of the lower extremity, and Fugl-Meyer Assessment scores in the initial assessment were predictive of their Community Integration Questionnaire scores at follow-up, with coefficients of determination ranging from 0.254 to 0.056 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The level of community integration of the participants was generally low, but it was greater at 1-year follow-up than it was initially. Balance function and daily living ability may be key predictors of community integration of patients following stroke.

BACKGROUND: In patients with advanced soft tissue sarcoma (STS), surgery had been reported to be associated with superior overall survival (OS). Chemotherapy details for such patients were less reported, and whether multimodal treatment with surgery and chemotherapy provides extra survival benefit remains unclear. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients with newly diagnosed advanced STS treated at National Taiwan University Hospital from January 1, 2011, to December 31, 2017. OS was calculated from the day of diagnosis of advanced STS to the day of death or last follow-up. Baseline patient characteristics and details regarding surgery and chemotherapy were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 545 patients were diagnosed with STS from 2011 to 2017, of which 226 patients had advanced STS. The median age was 54.7 years, and 54% of patients were women. Approximately 38% of patients with advanced STS underwent surgery and exhibited a trend of longer OS compared with who did not (median = 18.6 vs. 11.9 months, p = 0.083). In the chemotherapy subgroup, the benefit of surgery was more prominent (median = 21.9 vs. 16.5 months, p = 0.037). Patients who received chemotherapy prior to surgery exhibited numerically longer OS than those who underwent surgery first (median = 33.9 vs. 18.3 months, p = 0.155). After adjusting other clinical factors, chemotherapy remained an independent factor associated with favourable OS. CONCLUSION: Surgery may be more beneficial for the patients who receive chemotherapy. Our results support evaluation of sequential multimodal treatments strategy including surgery and chemotherapy in patients with advanced STS.

Objectives: Primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) is a common disease in young and thin male. Operation has been regarded as definitive treatment for it. However, the operative methods for those patients are under dispute. This study aims to directly compare the outcomes of uniportal VATS vs. needlescopic VATS in the treatment of PSP, focusing on postoperative pain and safety outcomes. Methods: From July 2013 to December 2017, the patients who underwent video-assisted thoracic surgery for pneumothorax in National Taiwan University Hospital were retrospectively collected. The preoperative condition, surgical results, and postoperative outcomes was analyzed. Results: There were 60 patients undergoing needlescopic VATS and 91 undergoing uniportal VATS during the study period. There was no significant difference between the patients who underwent needlescopic VATS and those who underwent uniportal VATS in their demographic and clinical characteristics. The post-operative pain score was significantly lower in the uniportal VATS group compared to the needlescopic VATS group at day 1 (2.65 ± 1.59 vs. 1.74 ± 1.35, p = 0.001). Conclusion: Uniportal VATS offers an effective, safe alternative for PSP treatment, with benefits including reduced post-operative pain. Our findings support the use of uniportal VATS, supplemented by a wound protector, as a viable option for PSP patients.

Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the most common malignant tumors in the world and shows strong metastatic potential. Current medicine for hepatocellular carcinoma therapy is invalid, while Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi exhibits the pharmaceutical potential to treat liver diseases and liver cancer. Herein, we verified the inhibitory properties and the pivotal molecules regimented by Scutellaria baicalensis on advanced hepatocellular carcinoma. At first, the viability of SK-Hep-1 cells was significantly reduced under treatment of Scutellaria baicalensis extract in a dose-dependent manner without affecting the growth of normal hepatocyte. Scutellaria baicalensis extract application could remarkably cause apoptosis of SK-Hep-1 cells through p53/cytochrome C/poly-ADP ribose polymerase cascades and arrest the cell cycle at the G1/S phase by downregulating cyclin-dependent kinases. Meanwhile, administration of Scutellaria baicalensis extract remarkably attenuated the migration capability as well as suppressed matrix metalloproteinase activity of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma cells. The proteome profiles and network analysis particularly implied that exposure to Scutellaria baicalensis extract downregulated the expression of HSP90ß, and the clinical stage of hepatocellular carcinoma is also positively correlated with the HSP90ß level. Combined treatment of Scutellaria baicalensis extract and HSP90ß siRNAs could markedly enhance the ubiquitination activity and the degradation of vimentin to subsequently inhibit the metastatic property of SK-Hep-1 cells. Moreover, application of Scutellaria baicalensis extract and HSP90ß siRNAs depleted phosphorylation of AKT, which stimulated the expression of p53 and consecutively triggered cell apoptosis. These findings suggest that HSP90ß may be a prospective target for the effective therapy of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma via accelerating apoptosis of hepatocellular carcinoma cells and eliciting mesenchymal-epithelial transition with the administration of Scutellaria baicalensis extract.

PURPOSE: To provide updated evidence about the effects of MT with ES for recovering upper extremities motor function in people with stroke. METHODS: Systematic review and meta-analysis were completed. Methodological quality was assessed using the version 2 of the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. The GRADE approach was employed to assess the certainty of evidence. RESULTS: A total of 16 trials with 773 participants were included in this review. The results demonstrated that MT with ES was more effective than sham (standardized mean difference [SMD], 1.89 [1.52-2.26]) and ES alone (SMD, 0.42 [0.11-0.73]) with low quality of evidence, or MT alone (SMD, 0.47[0.04-0.89]) with low quality of evidence for improving upper extremity motor control assessed using Fugl-Meyer Assessment. MT with ES had significant improvement of (MD, 6.47 [1.92-11.01]) the upper extremity gross gripping function assessed using the Action Research Arm Test compared with MT alone with low quality of evidence. MT combined with ES was more effective than sham group (SMD, 1.17 [0.42-1.93) for improving the ability to perform activities of daily living with low quality of evidence assessed using Motor Activity Log. CONCLUSION: MT with ES may be effective in improving upper limb motor recovery in people with stroke.


Combining Mirror Therapy (MT) and Electrical Stimulation (ES) modality could improve upper limb motor control, gross gripping function, and performance in ADLs based on ICF for people with stroke.Those individuals with subacute stroke are recommended as the optimal target group for the combined MT and ES.

Notch signaling is aberrantly activated in approximately 30% of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), significantly contributing to tumorigenesis and disease progression. Expression of the major Notch receptor, NOTCH1, is upregulated in HCC cells and correlates with advanced disease stages, although the molecular mechanisms underlying its overexpression remain unclear. Here, we report that expression of the intracellular domain of NOTCH1 (NICD1) is upregulated in HCC cells due to antagonism between the E3-ubiquitin ligase F-box/WD repeat-containing protein 7 (FBXW7) and the large scaffold protein abnormal spindle-like microcephaly-associated protein (ASPM) isoform 1 (ASPM-i1). Mechanistically, FBXW7-mediated polyubiquitination and the subsequent proteasomal degradation of NICD1 are hampered by the interaction of NICD1 with ASPM-i1, thereby stabilizing NICD1 and rendering HCC cells responsive to stimulation by Notch ligands. Consistently, downregulating ASPM-i1 expression reduced the protein abundance of NICD1 but not its FBXW7-binding-deficient mutant. Reinforcing the oncogenic function of this regulatory module, the forced expression of NICD1 significantly restored the tumorigenic potential of ASPM-i1-deficient HCC cells. Echoing these findings, NICD1 was found to be strongly co-expressed with ASPM-i1 in cancer cells in human HCC tissues (P < 0.001). In conclusion, our study identifies a novel Notch signaling regulatory mechanism mediated by protein-protein interaction between NICD1, FBXW7, and ASPM-i1 in HCC cells, representing a targetable vulnerability in human HCC.

Microtubule-targeting agents represent one of the most successful classes of anticancer agents. However, the development of drug resistance and the appearance of adverse effects hamper their clinical implementation. Novel microtubule-targeting agents without such limitations are urgently needed. By employing a gene expression-based drug repositioning strategy, this study identifies VU-0365114, originally synthesized as a positive allosteric modulator of human muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M5 (M5 mAChR), as a novel type of tubulin inhibitor by destabilizing microtubules. VU-0365114 exhibits a broad-spectrum in vitro anticancer activity, especially in colorectal cancer cells. A tumor xenograft study in nude mice shows that VU-0365114 slowed the in vivo colorectal tumor growth. The anticancer activity of VU-0365114 is not related to its original target, M5 mAChR. In addition, VU-0365114 does not serve as a substrate of multidrug resistance (MDR) proteins, and thus, it can overcome MDR. Furthermore, a kinome analysis shows that VU-0365114 did not exhibit other significant off-target effects. Taken together, our study suggests that VU-0365114 primarily targets microtubules, offering potential for repurposing in cancer treatment, although more studies are needed before further drug development.

INTRODUCTION: In-center automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) has been more frequently adopted in clinical practice for maintenance PD patients in China. For a better understanding of its clinical uptake, this retrospective study reviewed incident PD patients for a period of 6 years, investigating the practice pattern of in-center APD, factors associated with the use of in-center APD, and report on the patient survival compared to the non-users of APD among hospitalised PD patients. METHODS: This was a cohort study of all incident PD patients who met the inclusion criteria from 2013/01/01 to 2018/09/30, and were followed until death, cessation of PD, loss to follow-up, or 2018/12/31. Clinical characteristics, patient outcomes, and detailed data on APD sessions were recorded. We used time-dependent Cox model to estimate the variables associated with the initiation of in-center APD, and marginal structural model through inverse probability weighting to adjust for time-varying APD use on the causal pathway to all-cause mortality. RESULTS: A total of 651 subjects over 17501 patient-months were enrolled. Of these, 633 (97.2%) PD patients were hospitalised at least once during follow-up, and 369 (56.7%) received in-center APD at a certain point, and the timing of APD use during the first 3 months, first year and first 2 years since PD inception were 14.8%, 45.4% and 74.8%, respectively. A total of 12553 in-center APD sessions were recorded, where 85.9% used 4 bags of 5L-exchanges per prescription. Time-dependent Cox model showed that diabetes (hazard ratio [HR], 1.39, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.09-1.76), urine output (HR 0.80, 95% CI 0.70-0.92), serum albumin (HR 0.84, 95%CI 0.72-0.99), hemoglobin (HR 0.88, 95%CI 0.77-0.99), and Ca×P (HR 1.19, 95%CI 1.06-1.35) were significantly associated with in-center APD use. Among all hospitalised PD patients, the estimated hazard ratio corresponding to the marginal causal effect of in-center APD use on all-cause mortality is 0.13 (95% CI 0.05-0.31, P<0.001). Significant survival benefit (adjusted-HR 0.56, 95%CI 0.33-0.95) associated with starting APD after the first PD year was observed among in-center APD users. CONCLUSIONS: In-center APD is used intensively during the first 2 years of PD and is associated with certain clinical features. Over all a significant survival benefit of in-center APD use was observed.

Single crystals with chiral shapes aroused the interest of chemists due to their fascinating polarization rotation properties. Although the formation of large-scale spiral structures is considered to be a potential factor in chiral crystals, the precise mechanism behind their formation remains elusive. Herein, we present a rare phenomenon involving the multitransfer and expression of chirality at micro-, meso-, and macroscopic levels, starting from chiral carbon atoms and extending to the double-helical secondary structure, ultimately resulting in the chiral geometry of crystals. The assembly of the chiral double helices is facilitated by the dual characteristics of amide groups derived from amino acids, which serve as both hydrogen bond donors and receptors, similar to the assembly pattern observed in DNA. Crystal face analysis and theoretical morphology reveal two critical factors for the mechanism of the chiral crystal: inherent intrinsically symmetrical distribution of crystal faces and their acquired growth. Importantly, the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) study reveals the strong magneto-optical response of the hypersensitive f-f transition in the UV-vis-NIR region, which is much stronger than previously observed signals. Remarkably, an external magnetic field can reverse the CD signal. This research highlights the potential of lanthanide-based chiral helical structures as promising magneto-optical materials.

Considerable achievements were realized in illuminating underlying pathological mechanisms of patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN). Although IMN patients are well diagnosed before they reach renal failure, no currently available drug intervention is effective in halting IMN progression. In this study, we assess Moshen granule (MSG) effect on IMN patients and cationic bovine serum albumin (CBSA)-induced rats. Increasing studies has indicated that activation of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) was related to oxidative stress and inflammation. We further determine MSG effect on AHR, nuclear factor ƙB (NF-ƙB) and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) in the CBSA-induced rats. MSG markedly reduces proteinuria and improves kidney function in both IMN patients and rats induced by CBSA. MSG markedly inhibits increased mRNA expressions of intrarenal AHR and its four downstream target genes including CYP1A1, CYP1A2, CYP1B1 and COX-2 compared with untreated CBSA-induced rats. This is accompanied by markedly downregulated protein expressions of p-IƙBα and NF-ƙB p65 and its downstream gene products including MCP-1, COX-2, 12-LOX, iNOS, p47phox and p67phox, while markedly preserves protein expressions of Nrf2 and its downstream gene products including catalase, HO-1, GCLM, GCLC, MnSOD and NQO1 in the kidney tissues. These data suggests MSG blunts podocyte damage through inhibiting activation of NF-ƙB/Nrf2 pathway via AHR signaling. This finding may provide a promising therapy for treatment of IMN through oxidative stress and inflammation.

Intervertebral disc (IVD) herniation is a major cause of chronic low back pain and disability. The current nucleus pulposus (NP) discectomy effectively relieves pain symptoms, but the annulus fibrosus (AF) defects are left unrepaired. Tissue engineering approaches show promise in treating AF injury and IVD degeneration; however, the presence of an inflammatory milieu at the injury site hinders the mitochondrial energy metabolism of AF cells, resulting in a lack of AF regeneration. In this study, we fabricated a dynamic self-healing hydrogel loaded with melatonin (an endocrine hormone well-known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties) and investigate whether melatonin-loaded hydrogel could promote AF defect repair by rescuing the matrix synthesis and energy metabolism of AF cells. The protective effects of melatonin on matrix components (e.g. type I and II collagen and aggrecan) in AF cells were observed in the presence of interleukin (IL)-1ß. Additionally, melatonin was found to activate the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor signaling pathway, thereby safeguarding the mitochondrial function of AF cells from IL-1ß, as evidenced by the increased level of adenosine triphosphate, mitochondrial membrane potential, and respiratory chain factor expression. The incorporation of melatonin into a self-healing hydrogel based on thiolated gelatin and ß-cyclodextrin was proposed as a means of promoting AF regeneration. The successful implantation of melatonin-loaded hydrogel has been shown to facilitate in situ regeneration of AF tissue, thereby impeding IVD degeneration by preserving the hydration of nucleus pulposus in a rat box-cut IVD defect model. These findings offer compelling evidence that the development of a melatonin-loaded dynamic self-healing hydrogel can promote the mitochondrial functions of AF cells and represents a promising strategy for IVD regeneration.

Effective therapies for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are urgently needed, as it is a type of cancer resistant to chemotherapy. Recent evidence showed that PF-429242, a membrane-bound transcription factor site-1 protease (MBTPS1) inhibitor, exhibited anticancer activities against glioblastomas, renal cell carcinoma, and pancreatic cancer. However, its anticancer activity against HCC has yet to be investigated. In this study, we found that PF-429242 induced autophagy-dependent cell death in HCC cells. RNA-sequencing analysis indicated that the primary effect of PF-429242 was inhibition of the sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP) signaling pathway. However, overexpression of SREBP proteins did not efficiently rescue PF-429242-induced autophagy and cell death. Mechanistically, PF-429242 induced forkhead box protein O1 (FOXO1)-dependent autophagic cell death. Additionally, PF-429242 caused FOXO1-independent upregulation of insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 1 (IGFBP1), ultimately leading to autophagy-independent cell death. The in vivo anticancer activity of PF-429242 against HCC cells was demonstrated in a tumor xenograft mouse model. Therefore, PF-429242 is a potential anticancer agent to treat HCC by triggering FOXO1-dependent autophagic cell death and IGFBP1-mediated anti-survival signaling in parallel.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) play a pivotal role in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, with their clinical application often hindered by cell senescence during ex vivo expansion. Recent studies suggest that MSC-deposited decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) offers a conducive microenvironment that fosters cell proliferation and accentuates stem cell differentiation. However, the ability of this matrix environment to govern lineage differentiation of tissue-specific stem cells remains ambiguous. This research employs human adipose-derived MSCs (ADSCs) and synovium-derived MSCs (SDSCs) as models for adipogenesis and chondrogenesis differentiation pathways, respectively. Genetically modified dECM (GMdECM), produced by SV40LT-transduced immortalized cells, was studied for its influence on cell differentiation. Both types of immortalized cells displayed a reduction in chondrogenic ability but an enhancement in adipogenic potential. ADSCs grown on ADSC-deposited dECM showed stable chondrogenic potential but increased adipogenic capacity; conversely, SDSCs expanded on SDSC-generated dECM displayed elevated chondrogenic capacity and diminished adipogenic potential. This cell-dependent response was confirmed through GMdECM expansion, with SDSCs showing enhanced chondrogenesis. However, ADSCs did not exhibit improved chondrogenic potential on GMdECM, suggesting that the matrix microenvironment does not dictate the final differentiation path of tissue-specific stem cells. Potential molecular mechanisms, such as elevated basement membrane protein expression in GMdECMs and dynamic TWIST1 expression during expansion and chondrogenic induction, may underpin the strong chondrogenic differentiation of GMdECM-expanded SDSCs.

BACKGROUND: Application of autologous adipose-derived stem cells (ASC) for diabetic chronic wounds has become an emerging treatment option. However, ASCs from diabetic individuals showed impaired cell function and suboptimal wound healing effects. We proposed that adopting a low-glucose level in the culture medium for diabetic ASCs may restore their pro-healing capabilities. METHODS: ASCs from diabetic humans and mice were retrieved and cultured in high-glucose (HG, 4.5 g/L) or low-glucose (LG, 1.0 g/L) conditions. Cell characteristics and functions were investigated in vitro. Moreover, we applied diabetic murine ASCs cultured in HG or LG condition to a wound healing model in diabetic mice to compare their healing capabilities in vivo. RESULTS: Human ASCs exhibited decreased cell proliferation and migration with enhanced senescence when cultured in HG condition in vitro. Similar findings were noted in ASCs derived from diabetic mice. The inferior cellular functions could be partially recovered when they were cultured in LG condition. In the animal study, wounds healed faster when treated with HG- or LG-cultured diabetic ASCs relative to the control group. Moreover, higher collagen density, more angiogenesis and cellular retention of applied ASCs were found in wound tissues treated with diabetic ASCs cultured in LG condition. CONCLUSIONS: In line with the literature, our study showed that a diabetic milieu exerts an adverse effect on ASCs. Adopting LG culture condition is a simple and effective approach to enhance the wound healing capabilities of diabetic ASCs, which is valuable for the clinical application of autologous ASCs from diabetic patients.

Purpose: Circumferential radial margin (CRM) involvement by tumor after resection for esophageal cancer has been suggested as a significant prognostic factor. However, the prognostic value of CRM involvement after surgery with neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) is unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of and survival outcomes in CRM involvement as defined by the Royal College of Pathologists (RCP) and the College of American Pathologists (CAP) for patients with esophageal cancer undergoing neoadjuvant CCRT and esophagectomy. Methods: A total of 299 patients with esophageal cancer who underwent neoadjuvant CCRT followed by esophagectomy between 2006 and 2016 were enrolled in our study. The CRM status of the specimens obtained was determined pathologically according to both the CAP and RCP criteria. Survival analyses were performed and compared according to the two criteria. Results: Positive CRM was found in 102 (34.1%) and 40 (13.3%) patients according to RCP and CAP criteria, respectively. The overall and progression-free survival rates were significantly lower in the CRM-positive group than in the CRM-negative group according to both the RCP and CAP criteria. However, under multivariate analysis, in addition to pathological T and N staging of the tumor, only CAP-defined CRM positivity was a significant prognostic factor with adjusted hazard ratios of 2.64 (1.56-4.46) and 2.25 (1.34-3.78) for overall and progression-free survival, respectively (P < 0.001). Conclusion: In patients with esophageal cancer undergoing neoadjuvant CRT followed by esophagectomy, CAP-defined CRM positivity is an independent predictor of survival. Adjuvant therapy should be offered to patients with positive CRM.

The aim of this randomized study was to investigate whether stripping massage (SM) of myofascial trigger points in the lower rhomboid muscle could alleviate chest pain in patients following thoracoscopic surgery. In addition, a literature review was conducted to assess the effectiveness of various pain management techniques. Sixty adult patients who reported a visual analog scale (VAS) score of 4 or higher were randomly assigned to receive conventional analgesics alone (conventional group) or combined with SM twice daily for 2 weeks (SM group). VAS scores and the use of additional analgesics were evaluated on postoperative days 1, 3, 7, 14, and 30. Using the PubMed and Cochrane Library databases, a review of current pain management techniques was carried out up to January 31, 2022. A subgroup analysis was also performed to examine the treatment effect during different surgical periods and techniques. Results showed that the SM group had significantly lower VAS scores on postoperative days 3, 7, 14, and 30 (p < 0.001), as well as a shorter hospitalization duration and reduced need for additional analgesics (p < 0.001). The literature review included a total of 20 studies (2,342 cases of chest pain relief after thoracoscopic surgery), which indicated that serratus anterior plane (SAP) blocks were commonly used as a perioperative approach to reduce pain and opioid consumption. SM and SAP can both serve as adjuvant treatments for chest pain in patients following thoracoscopic surgery, with SM being a safe and noninvasive pain control option after hospital discharge.

The mechanical properties and material constitution of the aorta are important in forensic science and clinical medicine. Existing studies on the material constitution of the aorta do not satisfy the practical requirements of forensic and clinical medicine, as the reported failure stress and failure strain values for human aortic materials have a high dispersion. In this study, descending thoracic aortas were obtained from 50 cadavers (dead within 24 h) free of thoracic aortic disease, aged from 27 to 86 years old, which were divided into six age groups. The descending thoracic aorta was divided into proximal and distal segments. A customized 4-mm cutter was used to punch a circumferential and an axial dog-bone-shaped specimen from each segment; the aortic ostia and calcification were avoided. Instron 8,874 and digital image correlation were used to perform a uniaxial tensile test on each sample. Four samples from each descending thoracic aorta produced ideal stress-strain curves. All parameter-fitting regressions from the selected mathematical model converged, and the best-fit parameters of each sample were obtained. The elastic modulus of collagen fiber, failure stress, and the strain showed a decreasing trend with age, while the elastic modulus of elastic fiber showed an increasing trend with age. The elastic modulus of collagen fiber, failure stress, and strain of circumferential tensile were all greater than those for axial tensile. There was no statistical difference in model parameters and physiological moduli between the proximal and distal segments. The failure stress and strain in the proximal circumferential, distal circumferential, and distal axial tensile were all greater for the male group than for the female group. Finally, the Fung-type hyperelastic constitutive equations were fitted for the different segments in different age groups.

Myocardial hypertrophy plays a crucial role in cardiovascular disease (CVD) development. Myocardial hypertrophy is an adaptive response by myocardial cells to stress after cardiac injury to maintain cardiac output and function. Angiotensin II (Ang-II) regulates CVD through the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and its signaling in cardiac myocytes leads to excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Sesamin (SA), a natural compound in sesame seeds, has anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects. This study investigated whether SA could attenuate hypertrophic damage and oxidative injuries in H9c2 cells under Ang-II stimulation. We found that SA decreased the cell surface area. Furthermore, Ang-II treatment reduced Ang-II-increased ANP, BNP, and ß-MHC expression. Ang-II enhanced NADPH oxidase activity, ROS formation, and decreased Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) activity. SA treatment reduces Ang-II-caused oxidative injuries. We also found that SA mitigates Ang-II-induced apoptosis and pro-inflammatory responses. In conclusion, SA could attenuate Ang-II-induced cardiac hypertrophic injuries by inhibiting oxidative stress, apoptosis, and inflammation in H9c2 cells. Therefore, SA might be a potential supplement for CVD management.

Purpose: This study aimed to translate the English version of the Short Orientation-Memory-Concentration (SOMC) test into a Chinese version, denoted the C-SOMC test, and to investigate the concurrent validity, sensitivity, and specificity of the C-SOMC test against a longer and widely used screening instrument in people with a first cerebral infarction. Methods: An expert group translated the SOMC test into Chinese using a forward-backward procedure. Eighty-six participants (67 men and 19 women, mean age = 59.31 ± 11.57 years) with a first cerebral infarction were enrolled in this study. The validity of the C-SOMC test was determined using the Chinese version of Mini Mental State Examination (C-MMSE) as the comparator. Concurrent validity was determined using Spearman's rank correlation coefficients. Univariate linear regression was used to analyze items' abilities to predict the total score on the C-SOMC test and the C-MMSE score. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was used to demonstrate the sensitivity and specificity of the C-SOMC test at various cut-off values distinguishing cognitive impairment from normal cognition. Results: The total score for the C-SOMC test and the score for item 1 on this test exhibited moderate-to-good correlations with the C-MMSE score, with respective ρ-values of 0.636 and 0.565 (P < 0.001). The scores for each of items 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 yielded fair correlations with C-MMSE score, with ρ-value from 0.272 to 0.495 (P < 0.05). The total score on the C-SOMC test and the item score were good predictors (adjusted R2 = 0.049 to 0.615) of the C-MMSE score, and six items were good predictors (adjusted R2 = 0.134 to 0.795) of the total score. The AUC was 0.92 for the C-SOMC test. A cut-off of 17/18 on the C-SOMC test gave optimal performance: correct classification of 75% of participants, with 75% sensitivity and 87.9% specificity. Conclusion: The C-SOMC test demonstrated good concurrent validity, sensitivity and specificity in a sample of people with a first cerebral infarction, demonstrating that it could be used to screen for cognitive impairment in stroke patients.
