RESUMO

Predation risk may affect the foraging behavior of birds. However, there has been little research on the ability of domestic birds to perceive predation risk and thus adjust their feeding behavior. In this study, we tested whether domestic budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) perceived predation risk after the presentation of specimens and sounds of sparrowhawks (Accipiter nisus), domestic cats (Felis catus), and humans, and whether this in turn influenced their feeding behavior. When exposed to visual or acoustic stimuli, budgerigars showed significantly longer latency to feed under sparrowhawk, domestic cat, and human treatments than with controls. Budgerigars responded more strongly to acoustic stimuli than visual stimuli, and they showed the longest latency to feed and the least number of feeding times in response to sparrowhawk calls. Moreover, budgerigars showed shorter latency to feed and greater numbers of feeding times in response to human voices than to sparrowhawk or domestic cat calls. Our results suggest that domestic budgerigars may identify predation risk through visual or acoustic signals and adjust their feeding behavior accordingly.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to describe the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of cancer survivors in China by the five-level EuroQol-5-dimension (EQ-5D-5L) questionnaire and to explore the impact of the comorbidity of pre-existing chronic conditions on HRQoL in cancer survivors. METHODS: Data on cancer survivors were obtained from two cross-sectional surveys conducted in Shandong Province, China. The data of the Chinese general population, the Chinese diabetes population, the Chinese hypertension population, and the Chinese urban population from the published studies were used as the controls. The χ2 test was conducted to compare the incidence of five-dimensional problems between the study and control populations. The non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test were performed to examine the differences in EQ-5D-5L utility scores. Besides, the Tobit regression model was used to examine the variables influencing the EQ-5D-5L utility score. RESULTS: One thousand fifty-one adult cancer survivors were included. Cancer survivors had significantly lower EQ-5D-5L utility scores (Z = - 15.939, P < 0.001) and EQ-VAS scores (Z = - 11.156, P < 0.001) than the general adult population. The average EQ-5D-5L utility score of hypertensive cancer survivors was lower than that of the hypertensive population (Z = - 1.610, P = 0.107), but the difference was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Compared to the general population, the HRQoL of cancer survivors was extremely poor in all dimensions of the EQ-5D-5L. Pre-existing chronic conditions had significant antecedent effects on the HRQoL of cancer survivors. Therefore, more attention should be paid to chronic diseases, and effective interventions should be adopted based on this.

RESUMO

Gastric cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors of the digestive system. An anticancer bioactive peptide (ACBP) was previously shown to have an important role in inhibiting the differentiation of the MKN-45, N87 and GES-1 cell lines. However, to date, research on the effects of inflammatory factors in MKN-45, N87 and GES-1 cell lines after treatment with ACBP combined with oxaliplatin (OXA) has not been performed. To investigate the expression of immune regulatory factors, tumor growth factors and chemotactic factors in differentiated gastric cancer cells treated with ACBP combined with OXA, the expression of cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-1 receptor antagonist, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6-10, IL-12, IL-13, IL-15, IL-17, Eotaxin, basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), interferon (IFN)-γ, monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1, IFN-γ-induced protein-10, macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1α, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-BB, MIP-1ß, regulated upon activation, normal T cell expressed and presumably secreted, TNF-α and VEGF, was assessed with cell experiments using the Bio-Plex ProT Human Cytokine 27-plex Assay. The results indicated that immune regulatory factor, tumor growth factor and chemotactic factor expression levels were different after treatment with ACBP alone or ACBP combined with OXA. IFN-γ, IL-1ß, IL-17, IL-9, IL-10, IL-15, bFGF, GM-CSF and PDGF-BB expression was decreased in MKN-45 and N87 cells after ACBP treatment (P<0.01) and ACBP+OXA treatment (P<0.01) compared with the control cells, which indicated that ACBP inhibited tumor growth by regulating these cytokines, and the combination treatment inhibited tumor growth by regulating these cytokines. MIP-1ß, MCP-1 and IL-13 expression was decreased in MKN-45 and N87 cells after the combination treatment compared with ACBP treatment alone, which indicated that ACBP combined with OXA was able to inhibit tumor growth by regulating these cytokines, while the mechanism of action of the ACBP and OXA is actually different, e.g. for OXA, this would be to cause DNA damage response. Therefore, the ACBP and OXA combination treatment may be closely associated with tumor progression and metastasis with immunological competence by MCP-1, MIP-1ß and IL-13 expression.

RESUMO

In this study, the bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis) was the object of research to compare and analyze the contents of conventional nutrients, amino acids, fatty acids, inosinic acid, and earthy-smelling compounds (geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol) in muscles of its dorsal, belly, tail, opercula, eye socket, and mandible in order to evaluate their quality. The findings could inform recommendations for the consumption and processing of different muscle parts of the bighead carp. The results showed that the water content in the abdominal muscle was significantly lower than that in other parts, and the crude fat content was significantly higher than that in other parts (p < 0.05, the same below). Seventeen kinds of amino acids were detected in the muscles of the six parts of the fish, and the dorsal muscles had the highest umami amino acids, essential amino acids and total amino acids, which were 6.45 g/100 g, 6.82 g/100 g and 17.26 g/100 g, respectively. The total amount of essential amino acids in the muscle was higher than that in the FAO/WHO standard model. According to the AAS standard, the first limiting amino acid in the muscle of the six parts was valine (Val). There were 26 kinds of fatty acids in the abdomen, under the gill cover and in the eye socket muscles, and the content of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the mandibular muscles was the highest (45.41%). The content of inosine in the dorsal muscle was significantly higher than that in other parts. Geosmin was the main substance in the muscle. There was no correlation between the distribution of earthy-smelling compounds and fat content, but the content of earthy-smelling compounds in the muscle of the belly and eye socket was the highest. Therefore, the muscle quality of different parts of the bighead carp has its own characteristics, and targeted development and utilization can make more efficient use of bighead carp resources.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Jieduquyuziyin prescription (JP) is a traditional Chinese medicine utilized to treat systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Its efficacy has been confirmed through clinical trials and empirical evidence, leading to its authorized use in Chinese hospitals. The development of JP exemplifies the integration of traditional wisdom and scientific approaches, demonstrating the interdisciplinary essence of ethnopharmacology. These results emphasize the potential value of traditional medicine in addressing autoimmune disorders. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aims to address the effect of JP in MRL/lpr mice and elucidate the pharmacological mechanism by which JP targets CD11a and CD70 DNA methylation via the miR-29b-sp1/DNMT1 pathway. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MRL/lpr mice were divided into three groups: the model group (received distilled water), the positive group (administered AAV/miR-29b-3p inhibitor), and the JP group (treated with JP decoction). C57BL/6 mice were constituted as a control group. Through ELISA assay, serum and urine samples were assessed for anti-dsDNA, TNF-α, TGF-ß, IL-2, and UP. HE and Masson staining were conducted to reveal renal pathology. Genome DNA was extracted from CD4+ T cells of mice spleens to evaluate methylation level. The methylation of CD11a, CD70, and CD40L promoter regions was analyzed by targeted bisulfate sequencing. Their expression at the mRNA and protein levels was examined using quantitative real-time PCR, western blot analysis, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence staining of kidney tissues. Furthermore, the molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of the miR-29b-sp1/DNMT1 pathway by JP were explored with Jurkat cells transfected with miR-inhibitors or miR-mimics. RESULTS: Mice treated with JP exhibited a significant decrease in anti-dsDNA, TNF-α, TGF-ß, and UP, accompanied by a significant increase in IL-2. HE staining revealed JP effectively mitigated renal inflammatory response, while Masson staining indicated a reduction in collagen fiber content. In addition, JP exhibited a significant impact on the global hypomethylation of SLE, as evidenced by the induction of high methylation levels of CD11a and CD70 promoter regions, mediated through the miR-29b-sp1/DNMT1 pathway. CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrate JP exerts a protective effect against spontaneous SLE development, attenuates renal pathological changes, and functions as a miRNA inhibitor to enhance CD11a and CD70 DNA methylation through the modulation of the miR-29b-sp1/DNMT1 pathway.

RESUMO

Expecting to gain an excellent operating temperature window and superior catalytic activity of the catalyst in SCR reaction, the Fe-Ce bimetallic oxide catalyst was firstly prepared and sulfated with two different sulfation strategies by H2SO4. It is interestingly found that both the two sulfation strategies can significantly broaden the operating temperature window of the catalyst. In particular, the SFC and FCS both exhibit superior resistance to H2O + SO2, and the NOx conversion of the SFC even displays no changes in the coexistence of H2O and SO2. The characterization results show that different sulfation strategies can generate amorphous sulfate species rather than bulk sulfate species. Furthermore, more surface-adsorbed oxygen as well as higher contents of Ce3+ and Fe3+ can be obtained on the sulfated catalysts, especially for the SFC catalyst. Meanwhile, different sulfation strategies will progressively enhance the redox ability and amounts of strong acid sites, which will contribute to broadening the operating temperature window for the NH3-SCR reaction. Additionally, different sulfation methods do not change the reaction pathway of catalysts. However, the adsorption of ad-NH3 species and reactivity of ad-NOx species are significantly changed. These lead to the reaction pathway shifts to E-R direct over the SFC and the promotion of E-R and L-H mechanisms over the FCS catalyst.

RESUMO

This paper estimates the impact of income level on household beverage consumption, analyzes the consumption trends of sugar-sweetened beverages and sugar-free beverages in households, explores the future changes in the beverage consumption market pattern, and predicts the possible impact of the sugar industry on the development of sugar substitutes based on the beverage consumption data of Kantar Consumer Index in China from 2015 to 2017. The research results show that, firstly, there is an "inverted U-shaped" relationship between income level and household consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, which indicates that as income rises, household consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages tends to increase and then decrease. Secondly, income level has a positive effect on the household consumption of sugar-free beverages. Finally, in the future stage, with the further growth of income and the promotion of a healthy China, a large amount of sugar substitutes will be added to beverages instead of the original sugar, and the relationship between sugar and sugar substitute consumption will change from complementary to substitution. The findings of this paper have implications for encouraging food and beverage suppliers to produce "healthy", "nutritious" and "innovative" low-sugar products to meet the health needs of residents and ensure the healthy and orderly development of the sugar industry.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Anti-TIF1γ antibodies are a class of myositis-specific antibodies (MSAs) and are closely associated with adult cancer-associated myositis (CAM). The heterogeneity in anti-TIF1γ+ myositis is poorly explored, and whether anti-TIF1γ+ patients will develop cancer or not is unknown at their first diagnosis. Here, we aimed to explore the subtypes of anti-TIF1γ+ myositis and construct machine learning classifiers to predict cancer in anti-TIF1γ+ patients based on clinical features. METHODS: A cohort of 87 anti-TIF1γ+ patients were enrolled and followed up in Xiangya Hospital from June 2017 to June 2021. Sankey diagrams indicating temporal relationships between anti-TIF1γ+ myositis and cancer were plotted. Elastic net and random forest were used to select and rank the most important variables. Multidimensional scaling (MDS) plot and hierarchical cluster analysis were performed to identify subtypes of anti-TIF1γ+ myositis. The clinical characteristics were compared among subtypes of anti-TIF1γ+ patients. Machine learning classifiers were constructed to predict cancer in anti-TIF1γ+ myositis, the accuracy of which was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. RESULTS: Forty-seven (54.0%) anti-TIF1γ+ patients had cancer, 78.7% of which were diagnosed within 0.5 years of the myositis diagnosis. Fourteen variables contributing most to distinguishing cancer and non-cancer were selected and used for the calculation of the similarities (proximities) of samples and the construction of machine learning classifiers. The top 10 were disease duration, percentage of lymphocytes (L%), percentage of neutrophils (N%), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), sex, C-reactive protein (CRP), shawl sign, arthritis/arthralgia, V-neck sign, and anti-PM-Scl75 antibodies. Anti-TIF1γ+ myositis patients can be clearly separated into three clinical subtypes, which correspond to patients with low, intermediate, and high cancer risk, respectively. Machine learning classifiers [random forest, support vector machines (SVM), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), elastic net, and decision tree] had good predictions for cancer in anti-TIF1γ+ myositis patients. In particular, the prediction accuracy of random forest was >90%, and decision tree highlighted disease duration, NLR, and CRP as critical clinical parameters for recognizing cancer patients. CONCLUSION: Anti-TIF1γ+ myositis can be separated into three distinct subtypes with low, intermediate, and high risk of cancer. Machine learning classifiers constructed with clinical characteristics have favorable performance in predicting cancer in anti-TIF1γ+ myositis, which can help physicians in choosing appropriate cancer screening programs.

RESUMO

An imbalance in the lineages of immunosuppressive regulatory T cells (Treg cells) and the inflammatory TH17 subset of helper T cells leads to the development of autoimmune and/or inflammatory disease. Here we found that TAZ, a coactivator of TEAD transcription factors of Hippo signaling, was expressed under TH17 cell-inducing conditions and was required for TH17 differentiation and TH17 cell-mediated inflammatory diseases. TAZ was a critical co-activator of the TH17-defining transcription factor RORγt. In addition, TAZ attenuated Treg cell development by decreasing acetylation of the Treg cell master regulator Foxp3 mediated by the histone acetyltransferase Tip60, which targeted Foxp3 for proteasomal degradation. In contrast, under Treg cell-skewing conditions, TEAD1 expression and sequestration of TAZ from the transcription factors RORγt and Foxp3 promoted Treg cell differentiation. Furthermore, deficiency in TAZ or overexpression of TEAD1 induced Treg cell differentiation, whereas expression of a transgene encoding TAZ or activation of TAZ directed TH17 cell differentiation. Our results demonstrate a pivotal role for TAZ in regulating the differentiation of Treg cells and TH17 cells.

RESUMO

An adaptive optics (AO) system provides real-time compensation for atmospheric turbulence. However, an AO image is usually of poor contrast because of the nature of the imaging process, meaning that the image contains information coming from both out-of-focus and in-focus planes of the object, which also brings about a loss in quality. In this paper, we present a robust multi-frame adaptive optics image restoration algorithm via maximum likelihood estimation. Our proposed algorithm uses a maximum likelihood method with image regularization as the basic principle, and constructs the joint log likelihood function for multi-frame AO images based on a Poisson distribution model. To begin with, a frame selection method based on image variance is applied to the observed multi-frame AO images to select images with better quality to improve the convergence of a blind deconvolution algorithm. Then, by combining the imaging conditions and the AO system properties, a point spread function estimation model is built. Finally, we develop our iterative solutions for AO image restoration addressing the joint deconvolution issue. We conduct a number of experiments to evaluate the performances of our proposed algorithm. Experimental results show that our algorithm produces accurate AO image restoration results and outperforms the current state-of-the-art blind deconvolution methods.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common type of malignant transformation in mature cystic teratoma (MCT) of the ovary. The SCC is difficult to preoperatively diagnose. We conducted a retrospective study to seek the possible risk/prognostic factors and treatments for SCC arising from MCT of the ovary. METHODS: Using an institutional database, we identified 3 women treated for SCC arising from an MCT of the ovary at the Kaohsiung Veteran General Hospital. A retrospective chart review was conducted, with information obtained from radiographs, operative reports, pathology reports, and radiation oncology records. RESULTS: A total of 1551 cases of MCT were diagnosed at Kaohsiung Veteran General Hospital from 1990 to 2009, of which, malignant teratoma SCC type was noted in 3 cases (0.19%). The median age of the subjects was 39 years. Abdominal fullness was the most common symptom (3/3 cases). The mean diameter of the ovarian tumor was 17.3 cm, ranging from 16 to 18 cm. All 3 patients received simple right salpingo-oophorectomy or debulking surgery. Two of the patients reached stage IIIC and died. CONCLUSIONS: : With our review as basis, we recommend being cautious of the following risk factors: patient age, tumor size, ultrasound characteristics, sonar tumor vessel wave form, computed tomography, and levels of SCC and CA125 tumor markers. We suggest that patients have regular ovarian ultrasound examination. Based on our literature review, stage IA patients who undergo standardized operational procedures do well without adjuvant treatment, but such patients must be confirmed accurately with complete surgical staging to be in stage IA before undergoing conservative management. The optimal approach to the management of patients with advanced stage and recurrent disease is unclear. Surgical cytoreduction with proper staging, adjuvant therapy with platinum-based or paclitaxel-based chemotherapy, and concurrent whole pelvic radiation have been recommended as possible methods of treatment.
