The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) regulations establish 12 hours as the maximum pre-slaughter fasting period for broilers; however, many processing plants have considered this time is not sufficient, and consequently return the birds to the farms, with consequent economic losses and welfare problems. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the possible effects of longer pre-slaughter fasting times. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of pre-slaughter fasting times longer than those established by MAPA on broiler welfare, breast meat quality, and intestinal integrity. Forty 42-d-old broilers were submitted to different pre-slaughter fasting times: group I: 6 hours, group II 9h, group III 12h, and group IV 15h. Bird welfare was assessed before slaughter. After sacrifice, intestinal samples were collected to assess their morphology and morphometrics, and the Pectoralis major muscle was analyzed for pH and color. There was no influence (p>0.05) of treatments on breast muscle pH or color.There were no significant changes in intestinal morphometrics (p<0.05). Bird behavior was affected (p<0.05), suggesting that welfare was impaired as fasting time increased, but no differences in the analyzed parameters were detected between broilers fasted for 12 or 15 hours. It was concluded that the behavioral differences between birds fasted for 12 and 15 hours are not sufficient to assert that those fasted for 15 hours were in worse welfare conditions.(AU)

The spread of composted municipal waste (CMW) on land can be used for sustainable crop production. Nevertheless, heavy metals availability may be a problem. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to assess the impact of CMW disposal on heavy metal accumulation in soil and plants. The treatments consisted of an untreated plot (control) and four rates of CMW application. All plots were cultivated in succession of carrot, cauliflower, sweet corn, and radish. Cu and Pb significantly accumulated in the topsoil (0-5 cm) with a similar pattern in the depths of 5-10 cm and 10-20 cm. Cauliflower, for Fe and Cu, and radish, for Pb and Cu, had their tissue analysis significantly affected due to the increasing rates of application of CMW. Nevertheless, the levels of accumulation in both, soil and plant, are within permissible limits. The evidences provided by this experiment indicated that heavy metals are less likely to cause problems for the estimation of CMW loadings to Brazilian agricultural land.

OBJECTIVES: To present the videolaparoscopies performed by the Childrens Surgery Service, and study the main indications for pediatric laparoscopic surgeries, considering advantages and disadvantages over conventional open procedures. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 612 videolaparoscopies in children aged between 8 days and 17 years treated from November/95 to 2000. Basic principles of videolaparoscopy and the postoperative management of several pediatric diseases are described. The results, advantages, and complications were analyzed after a 5-year follow-up period. RESULTS: Laparoscopic surgery allowed for a wide series of abdominal procedures conventionally carried out through open surgery, mainly for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, inflammatory acute abdomen, adhesive intestinal obstruction, biliary lithiasis, tumors, cryptorchidism, ovarian diseases, splenectomies, aganglionosis, trauma and others. Morbidity was low (1%), and mortality due to laparoscopy was nonexistent. Conversion to laparotomy occurred in only 14 cases (2.3%), mainly because of trauma. The principal advantages included minimal surgical trauma, pain and reflex ileum, short hospital stay, almost no incisional hernias and better cosmetic scars. CONCLUSIONS: Videolaparoscopy seems to be a great advance in modern pediatric surgery, allowing safer and less invasive treatment of a wide series of abdominal diseases at all pediatric ages.
