RESUMO

The highest beam efficiency in a wireless power transfer (WPT) system that uses focusing components was 51%, using a [Formula: see text] diameter reflector for a transfer distance of [Formula: see text]. We have beaten that record, and present here a system that surpasses it by 25%. Using the quasioptical framework for reducing spillover losses in WPT, we present a double-reflector system that achieved a higher beam efficiency than the state-of-the-art. The transmitting and receiving antennas were 3D-printed conical smooth-walled horn antennas, specially designed for this purpose. The theoretical analysis enabled the design of a [Formula: see text] system, whose energy focus location has been experimentally verified. Then, the complete system was experimented upon, enabling a high beam transfer efficiency of 63.75%. Additionally, the advantage of using quasioptics in radiative wireless power transfer applications is discussed, as well as the sensitivity of its systems. Finally, a comparison with the state-of-the-art is done by the proposal of new figures-of-merit, relating the systems' physical dimensions and beam efficiency. This research is a paradigm shift by presenting a promising path for future WPT research through quasioptics, whose high efficiencies may enable commercial applications of this technology for solving power supply issues in our society.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: Obesity is the main risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus. Secondary metabolites with biological activities and pharmacological potential have been identified in species of the Baccharis genus that are specifically distributed in the Americas. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effects of methanol extracts from Baccharis dracunculifolia DC. Asteraceae on metabolic parameters, satiety, and growth in monosodium glutamate (MSG) induced-obesity model rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MSG was administered to 32 newborn rats (4 mg/g of body weight) once daily for 5 consecutive days. Four experimental groups (control, control + extract, MSG, and MSG + extract) were treated for 30 consecutive days with 400 mg/kg of B. dracunculifolia extract by gavage. Biochemical parameters, antioxidant activity, total extract phenolic content (methanolic, ethanolic, and acetone extractions), and pancreatic islets were evaluated. RESULTS: High levels of phenolic compounds were identified in B. dracunculifolia extracts (methanol: 46.2 ± 0.4 mg GAE/L; acetate: 70.5 ± 0.5 mg GAE/L; and ethanol: 30.3 ± 0.21 mg GAE/L); high antioxidant activity was detected in B. dracunculifolia ethanol and methanol extracts. The concentration of serum insulin increased 30% in obese animals treated with extract solutions (1.4-2.0 µU/mL, p < 0.05). Insulin secretion in pancreatic islets was 8.3 mM glucose (58%, p < 0.05) and 16.7 mM (99.5%, p < 0.05) in rats in the MSG + extract and MSG groups, respectively. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Treatment with B. dracunculifolia extracts protected pancreatic islets and prevented the irreversible cellular damage observed in animals in obesity and diabetes models.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Patients operated on for type A aortic dissection remain at risk of long-term aneurysm development, the main cause for late death. The aim of this study was to identify early predictors for aneurysm formation at three-years after surgery. METHODS: A study group of 70 consecutive patients (52 +/- 10 years-old, 41 male), operated on for aortic dissection with replacement of the ascending segment, was evaluated prospectively for three-years. In order to detect aneurysm formation, the dimension of residual distal aortic segments was obtained soon after surgery and then annually for three years using cardiovascular magnetic resonance. RESULTS: During follow-up (38 +/- 2.6 months), aneurysm was found in 25 patients (35%) involving residual segments. Larger initial dimension of segments, higher pulse pressure, lower distensibility of residual segments and the presence of a residual flap were univariately associated with aneurysm. Multivariate analysis identified the initial dimension (mm) of the descending thoracic aorta (OR 1.47, 95%CI: [1.19-1.82]) and pulse pressure (OR 1.43,95%CI: [1.10-1.86]) as independent variables for aneurysm formation. A risk score using pulse pressure and descending thoracic dimension was constructed. Patients with or=45 yielded 100% of aneurysm frequency. CONCLUSIONS: Type A aortic dissection treated by graft interposition is associated with a high risk of aneurysm formation. Early post-operative pulse pressure and the descending thoracic aortic dimension were independent variables and seem to be the main predictors for the outcome.
