Fecal incontinence is the involuntary passage or the incapacity to control the release of fecal matter through the anus. It is a condition that significantly impairs quality of life in those that suffer from it, given that it affects body image, self-esteem, and interferes with everyday activities, in turn, favoring social isolation. There are no guidelines or consensus in Mexico on the topic, and so the Asociación Mexicana de Gastroenterología brought together a multidisciplinary group (gastroenterologists, neurogastroenterologists, and surgeons) to carry out the «Mexican consensus on fecal incontinence¼ and establish useful recommendations for the medical community. The present document presents the formulated recommendations in 35 statements. Fecal incontinence is known to be a frequent entity whose incidence increases as individuals age, but one that is under-recognized. The pathophysiology of incontinence is complex and multifactorial, and in most cases, there is more than one associated risk factor. Even though there is no diagnostic gold standard, the combination of tests that evaluate structure (endoanal ultrasound) and function (anorectal manometry) should be recommended in all cases. Treatment should also be multidisciplinary and general measures and drugs (lidamidine, loperamide) are recommended, as well as non-pharmacologic interventions, such as biofeedback therapy, in selected cases. Likewise, surgical treatment should be offered to selected patients and performed by experts.

Women with a history of preeclampsia (PE) have a greater risk of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). In turn, pregnancy at high altitude is a risk factor for PE. However, whether women who develop PE during highland pregnancy are at risk of PAH before and after birth has not been investigated. We tested the hypothesis that during highland pregnancy, women who develop PE are at greater risk of PAH compared to women undergoing healthy highland pregnancies. The study was on 140 women in La Paz, Bolivia (3640m). Women undergoing healthy highland pregnancy were controls (C, n = 70; 29 ± 3.3 years old, mean±SD). Women diagnosed with PE were the experimental group (PE, n = 70, 31 ± 2 years old). Conventional (B- and M-mode, PW Doppler) and modern (pulsed wave tissue Doppler imaging) ultrasound were applied for cardiovascular íííassessment. Spirometry determined maternal lung function. Assessments occurred at 35 ± 4 weeks of pregnancy and 6 ± 0.3 weeks after birth. Relative to highland controls, highland PE women had enlarged right ventricular (RV) and right atrial chamber sizes, greater pulmonary artery dimensions and increased estimated RV contractility, pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance. Highland PE women had lower values for peripheral oxygen saturation, forced expiratory flow and the bronchial permeability index. Differences remained 6 weeks after birth. Therefore, women who develop PE at high altitude are at greater risk of PAH before and long after birth. Hence, women with a history of PE at high altitude have an increased cardiovascular risk that transcends the systemic circulation to include the pulmonary vascular bed.

Encapsulation of biostimulant metabolites has gained popularity as it increases their shelf life and improves their absorption, being considered a good alternative for the manufacture of products that stimulate plant growth and fruit production. Cell-free supernatants (CFS) were obtained from nine indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) producing bacterial strains. Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (PT53T) produced the highest concentration of IAA (15.88 µg/mL) after 48 h of incubation. CFS from this strain, as well as an IAA standard were separately encapsulated in chitosan microparticles (CS-MP) using the ionic gelation method. The CS-MP were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), showing absorption bands at 1641, 1547, and 1218 cm-1, associated with the vibrations of the carbonyl C=O, the N-H amine, and the bond between chitosan (CHI) and sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP). The effects of unencapsulated CFS, encapsulated CFS (EN-CFS), and encapsulated IAA standard (EN-IAA) on germination and growth of seven-day-old tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) seedlings were studied. Results showed that both EN-CFS and EN-IAA significantly (p < 0.05) increased seed germination rates by 77.5 and 80.8%, respectively. Both CFS and EN-IAA produced the greatest increase in aerial part length and fresh weight with respect to the treatment-free test. Therefore, it was concluded that the application of EN-CFS or EN-IAA could be a good option to improve the germination and growth of tomato seedlings.

INTRODUCTION: Ketogenic therapy (KT) studies have focused in children older than 2 years and adults. Recently its efficacy in infants has been reported, but there are few studies in this age group. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report a case series of nine newborn and children younger than 4 months of age with refractory epilepsy treated with KT. We retrospectively reviewed charts of children treated at our center between 2015-2021. RESULTS: Data was collected on seven patients. Six patients began having seizures on day one of life, one had seizures starting on day 45. Different epilepsy etiologies were found. KT was started as soon as 9 days of life. The average age at which ketogenic therapy was started was 24 days of life. Initially, the diet was started at 1:1 or 2:1 ratio, and was progressed to a 4:1 ratio. After one month of KT 5/7 patients experienced a significant reduction in seizure frequency (>50%) and 2/7 had complete seizure control. At six months, 4/7 patients achieve complete seizure freedom and 1/7 had >50% seizure reduction. Two patients were lost to follow-up. None of our patients reported gastrointestinal side effects that required diet adjustments. One patient had mild and one mild hypertriglyceridemia. CONCLUSION: Even though evidence about KT in young children are starting to emerge, our experience shows it can be successful in controlling seizure burden without considerable adverse effects. There is great research potential regarding KT in young children.


TITLE: Tolerancia y respuesta a la terapia cetógena en neonatos y lactantes menores de 4 meses. Serie de casos en un centro hospitalario de Medellín, Colombia.Introducción. Los estudios para terapia cetógena (TC) se han concentrado en niños mayores de 2 años y adultos. Su eficacia en lactantes se ha descrito, pero hay pocos estudios en este grupo de edad. Pacientes y métodos. Se describe una serie de casos de nueve neonatos y lactantes menores de 4 meses de edad con epilepsia refractaria que recibieron tratamiento con TC. Se evaluaron, retrospectivamente, los registros clínicos de niños tratados entre 2015 y 2021. Resultados. Se recolectaron datos de siete pacientes. Seis pacientes iniciaron con crisis epilépticas el primer día de vida, y uno, el día 45. La etiología de la epilepsia fue variada (metabólica, genética y estructural). La TC se inició tan temprano como a los 9 días de vida. La edad promedio de inicio fue los 24 días de vida. Se inició con una tasa cetógena de 1:1 o 1:2, y se progresó posteriormente a 4:1. Después de un mes de TC, 5/7 pacientes presentaron una reducción significativa en la frecuencia de las crisis (>50%) y 2/7 experimentaron un control completo. A los seis meses, 4/7 pacientes lograron un control completo y 1/7 un control >50%. Dos pacientes se perdieron en el seguimiento. No se notificaron efectos gastrointestinales que obligaran al ajuste o la suspensión de la dieta. Se notificaron hipoglucemia e hipertrigliceridemia. Conclusión. A pesar de que la evidencia en la TC en lactantes y neonatos apenas está empezando a aparecer, nuestra experiencia muestra que puede ser una buena opción terapéutica para el control de las crisis epilépticas, sin efectos adversos importantes. Existe un gran potencial de investigación en el área de la TC en lactantes y neonatos.

BACKGROUND: The number of people diagnosed with dementia globally has dramatically increased in recent years. The objective of this study was to explore beliefs and knowledge among the Cuban population with regard to the risk factors that may lead to dementia and the actions that may be taken to prevent it. METHOD: In an exploratory cross-sectional study, we surveyed a total of 391 people aged between 18 and 96 years. The results were stratified by sex, age range, level of education, and contact with dementia. RESULTS: Dementia was the fourth most worrying disease. A total of 64.5% of participants believed that the risk of dementia could be reduced, and 60% that the appropriate time to begin prevention measures is after the age of 40. Cognitive stimulation and healthy diet were more frequently cited as useful activities to reduce risk. Survey respondents reported little presence in their lifestyle of behaviours that are beneficial for reducing the risk of dementia. CONCLUSIONS: Although dementia is an important health issue for respondents, their knowledge about disease prevention is still insufficient. The results obtained constitute a starting point for the design of policies aimed at increasing knowledge about the disease and improving prevention.

BACKGROUND: Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infection is the most common cause of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Only few studies correlated serotypes and stx genotypes with disease severity. This study aimed to update STEC serotypes, stx genotypes, and virulence factors (eae and ehxA) in a cohort of patients with STEC-HUS and investigate whether they influence the severity of disease. METHODS: In this multicentric study, children hospitalized between 2005 and 2016 with STEC-HUS confirmed by the National Reference Laboratory were included. Serotypes (O157, O145, O121, and others), stx genotypes (stx1a, stx2a, stx2c, stx2d, and others), and virulence factors were analyzed, and their association with dialysis requirement (>10 days); severe neurological, cardiovascular, and/or bowel involvement; and death was assessed. RESULTS: The records of 280 patients were reviewed; 160 females, median age 21 months (IQR18m). STEC O157 was isolated in 206 (73.6%) patients, O145 in 47 (16.8%), O121 in 15 (5.4%), and other serotypes in 12 (4.2%). The stx2a/2c genotype was carried by 179 (63.9%) strains, stx2a by 94 (33.6%), stx1a/stx2a by five (1.8%), and stx1a only by two (0.7%). All strains except six harbored eae and ehxA genes. Fifty-nine (21.1%) patients had severe neurological involvement, 29 (10.4%) severe bowel injury, 14 (5%) cardiovascular involvement, 53 (18.9%) required > 10 days of dialysis, and 12 (4.3%) died. Neither serotypes nor stx genotypes detected were significantly linked to severity. CONCLUSIONS: Serotype O157 and virulence stx2a/2c, eae, ehxA genotype are prevalent in Argentina, and no relationship was found between severity and serotypes and genotypes of STEC detected.

BACKGROUND: Management of acute kidney injury (AKI) in children with hemolytic uremic syndrome induced by a Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli infection (STEC-HUS) is supportive; however, 40 to 60% of cases need kidney replacement therapy (KRT). The aim of this study was to analyze procedure complications, especially peritonitis, and clinical outcomes in children with AKI secondary to STEC-HUS treated with acute PD. METHODS: This is a multicenter retrospective study conducted among thirty-seven Argentinian centers. We reviewed medical records of 389 children with STEC-HUS hospitalized between January 2015 and February 2019 that required PD. RESULTS: Complications associated with PD were catheter malfunction (n = 93, 24%), peritonitis (n = 75, 19%), fluid leaks (n = 45, 11.5%), bleeding events (n = 23, 6%), and hyperglycemia (n = 8, 2%). In the multivariate analysis, the use of antibiotic prophylaxis was independently associated with a decreased risk of peritonitis (hazard ratio 0.49, IC 95% 0.29-0.81; p = 0.001), and open-surgery catheter insertion was independently associated with a higher risk (hazard ratio 2.8, IC 95% 1.21-6.82; p = 0.001). Discontinuation of PD due to peritonitis, severe leak, or mechanical complications occurred in 3.8% of patients. No patient needed to be transitioned to other modality of KRT due to inefficacy of the technique. Mortality during the acute phase occurred in 2.8% patients due to extrarenal complications (neurological and cardiac involvement), not related to PD. CONCLUSIONS: Acute PD was a safe and effective method to manage AKI in children with STEC-HUS. Prophylactic antibiotics prior to insertion of the PD catheter should be considered to decrease the incidence of peritonitis.

BACKGROUND: Evaluate the safety, toxicity and efficacy of an institutional-simplified SBRT protocol with two short SBRT regimens (three or five fractions) for the treatment of lung cancer and oligometastases, according to the volume and localization of tumours. METHODS: Patients with stage I (T1 or T2) non-small cell lung cancer or lung oligometastases were treated from August 2011 to October 2015. Patients were required to be considered medically inoperable and were discussed in a multidisciplinary team. RESULTS: 100 patients were analysed, 59 had a peripheral location (P), and 41 a central location (C).All patients finished their SBRT course without interruptions related to acute toxicity. The most frequent acute toxicity was grade 1 asthenia, only one patient developed grade 3 toxicity (pneumonitis) and there were no grade 4 or 5 acute toxicities. Three asymptomatic radiation-induced rib fractures were identified, the 1 and 2-year rib fracture-free survival were 97% and 94%, respectively. Two-year progression-free survival and 2-year overall survival of all patients were 52% and 70%, respectively, with a median PFS and OS of 26 and 43 months. Survival free of local progression (SFLP) at 2 years was 89%. A higher PFS in primary lung cancer compared with metastatic tumours was observed, with a median of 35 months with 19 months (p = 0.01). However, no statistical difference was observed in terms of OS between both diseases. CONCLUSIONS: SBRT in lung cancer with three sessions for peripheral tumours and five sessions for central tumours may be safely delivered, with low morbidity.

Milk is a liquid food that possesses an important quantity of highly bioavailable macronutrients. In addition, it is readily accessible, as well as relatively inexpensive. Given that the knowledge of physicians about nutrition and food composition is deficient, in general, many of the dietary interventions recommended in diverse clinical settings lack a scientific basis. The aim of the present review was to produce a technical opinion that serves as a frame of reference to best sustain recommendations for consuming milk and dairy products as daily nutrition in the adult and older adult. The effects of milk and dairy products during the pediatric stage are not addressed in the present work. The Asociación Mexicana de Gastroenterología and the Asociación Mexicana de Gerontología y Geriatría jointly discussed and analyzed topics dealing with the legal designation of milk, the classification and nutritional profile of cow's milk, its nutritional characteristics, its consumption in the adult, intolerance to cow's milk, and associations of milk consumption with digestive tract alterations and other conditions. Finally, certain aspects of milk consumption in the older adult and its relation to overall health are briefly discussed.

Leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease caused by intracellular protozoa of the Leishmania genus that are spread and transmitted by sandflies. Natural infection and clinical disease in domestic cats and dogs appear to be rare or perhaps largely under-reported in endemic areas. However, previous reports on infected domestic animals usually implicate the same Leishmania species that affect humans in tropical and subtropical areas of the world suggesting a potential role for zoonotic transmission. In the present study we assessed a representative sample of cats and dogs from endemic urban / suburban areas of Lara state in central western Venezuela. In both dogs and cats, cutaneous disease exhibits a spectrum of manifestations that range from single papules or nodules, which may evolve into ulcerative, plaque-like or scaly lesions. Cytochrome b (cyt b) PCR gene sequence analysis revealed L. mexicana as the causative agent in all cases, including two human cases proceeding from the same study area at the same time the study was carried out. In order to improve our understanding on feline/canine infection with Leishmania mexicana, and address potential zoonotic concerns it is necessary to characterize its enzootic reservoirs and vectors as well as the possible anthropophilic players linking to the peridomestic and domestic cycles.

OBJECTIVES: (1) Evaluate mortality rate in patients with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli hemolytic uremic syndrome, (2) determine the leading causes of death, and (3) identify predictors of mortality at hospital admission. METHODS: We conducted a multicentric, observational, retrospective, cross-sectional study. It included patients under 18 years old with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli hemolytic uremic syndrome hospitalized between January 2005 and June 2016. Clinical and laboratory data were obtained from the Argentine National Epidemiological Surveillance System of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome. Clinical and laboratory variables were compared between deceased and non-deceased patients. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. ROC curves and area under the curve were obtained. RESULTS: Seventeen (3.65%) out of the 466 patients died, being central nervous system involvement the main cause of death. Predictors of death were central nervous system involvement, the number of days since the beginning of diarrhea to hospitalization, hyponatremia, high hemoglobin, high leukocyte counts, and low bicarbonate concentration on admission. In the multivariate analysis, central nervous system involvement, sodium concentration, and hemoglobin were independent predictors. The best cut off for sodium was ≤ 128 meq/l and for hemoglobin ≥ 10.8 g/dl. CONCLUSIONS: Mortality was low in children with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli hemolytic uremic syndrome, being central nervous system involvement the main cause of death. The best mortality predictors found were central nervous system involvement, hemoglobin, and sodium concentration. Hyponatremia may be a new Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli hemolytic uremic syndrome mortality predictor.

RESUMO

Gibberellins (GAs) are natural complex biomolecules initially identified as secondary metabolites in the fungus Gibberella fujikuroi with strong implications in plant physiology. GAs have been identified in different fungal and bacterial species, in some cases related to virulence, but the full understanding of the role of these metabolites in the different organisms would need additional investigation. In this review, we summarize the current evidence regarding a common pathway for GA synthesis in fungi, bacteria and plant from the genes depicted as part of the GA production cluster to the enzymes responsible for the catalytic transformations and the biosynthetical routes involved. Moreover, we present the relationship between these observations and the biotechnological applications of GAs in plants, which has shown an enormous commercial impact.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate a new organisational model, "process management" (PM), implemented in the Hospital Universitario Virgen de la Victoria (HUVV) compared with traditional models used in other Radiation Oncology Departments (RODs), in terms of efficacy and efficiency. METHODS: The study period ranged from September 2011 to August 2012. Efficacy was assessed, comparing the number of patients attended in first consultation and treated per month, average waiting time from referral to first visit and average waiting time from first visit to treatment. Data were collected from two public hospitals in Andalusia: the HUVV and another Public Hospital in Andalusia (PHA1). Efficiency was assessed comparing the costs per patient attended in first visit and treated at HUVV in 2012 compared with those of a second Public Hospital in Andalusia (PHA2) for 2008. The number of sessions saved using hypofractionation versus classical schemes during the year 2012 in HUVV was estimated, and the money saved was calculated. RESULTS: In the efficacy analysis, we found significant differences in the average waiting time for first visit, start of treatment, and the number of patients seen and treated annually. After calculating the total cost generated in the ROD, the efficiency analysis showed a lower cost per patient attended in first visit (EUR 599.17) and per patient treated (EUR 783.50), with a saving of 6035 sessions using hypofractionated schemes. CONCLUSIONS: Process management in an ROD reduces time, both to first medical visit and to treatment initiation, allowing an optimisation of linear accelerator (LINAC) capacity.

BACKGROUND: Scleroderma can present with esophageal involvement causing important morbidity. AIMS: To describe the manometric findings and clinical characteristics of patients with scleroderma and esophageal symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with scleroderma and esophageal symptoms were evaluated through esophageal manometry within the time frame of one year. Descriptive statistics were carried out and the continuous variables were expressed as means and standard deviation. Frequencies were expressed as percentages. RESULTS: The study included 24 female patients with a mean age of 53.5 years and mean disease progression of 7.84 years. The most frequent findings were short and hypotonic lower esophageal sphincter (mean length 1.58cm and mean tone 9.49mmHg) and ineffective esophageal motility (mean non-transmitted waves 92.91%, mean effective primary peristalsis 40.05%, and mean amplitude 13.11mmHg). The most frequent symptom was dysphagia. CONCLUSIONS: Scleroderma is associated with lower esophageal sphincter alterations and symptomatic ineffective esophageal motility.

Metastatic breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease that presents in varying forms, and a growing number of therapeutic options makes it difficult to determine the best choice in each particular situation. When selecting a systemic treatment, it is important to consider the medication administered in the previous stages, such as acquired resistance, type of progression, time to relapse, tumor aggressiveness, age, comorbidities, pre- and post-menopausal status, and patient preferences. Moreover, tumor genomic signatures can identify different subtypes, which can be used to create patient profiles and design specific therapies. However, there is no consensus regarding the best treatment sequence for each subgroup of patients. During the SABCC Congress of 2014, specialized breast cancer oncologists from referral hospitals in Europe met to define patient profiles and to determine specific treatment sequences for each one. Conclusions were then debated in a final meeting in which a relative degree of consensus for each treatment sequence was established. Four patient profiles were defined according to established breast cancer phenotypes: pre-menopausal patients with luminal subtype, post-menopausal patients with luminal subtype, patients with triple-negative subtype, and patients with HER2-positive subtype. A treatment sequence was then defined, consisting of hormonal therapy with tamoxifen, aromatase inhibitors, fulvestrant, and mTOR inhibitors for pre- and post-menopausal patien ts; a chemotherapy sequence for the first, second, and further lines for luminal and triple-negative patients; and an optimal sequence for treatment with new antiHER2 therapies. Finally, a document detailing all treatment sequences, that had the agreement of all the oncologists, was drawn up as a guideline and advocacy tool for professionals treating patients with this disease.

As a first national surveillance of Acinetobacter in Cuba, a total of 500 Acinetobacter spp. isolates recovered from 30 hospitals between 2010 and 2012 were studied. Acinetobacter baumannii-calcoaceticus complex accounted for 96.4% of all the Acinetobacter isolates, while other species were detected at low frequency (A. junii 1.6%, A. lwoffii 1%, A. haemolyticus 0.8%, A. soli 0.2%). Resistance rates of isolates were 34-61% to third-generation cephalosporins, 49-50% to ß-lactams/inhibitor combinations, 42-47% to aminoglycosides, 42-44% to carbapenems and 55% to ciprofloxacin. However, resistance rates to colistin, doxycycline, tetracycline and rifampin were less than 5%. Among carbapenem-resistant isolates, 75% harboured different bla OXA genes (OXA-23, 73%; OXA-24, 18%; OXA-58, 3%). The bla NDM-1 gene was identified in an A. soli strain, of which the species was confirmed by sequence analysis of 16S rRNA gene, rpoB, rpoB-rpoC and rpoL-rpoB intergenic spacer regions and gyrB. The sequences of bla NDM-1 and its surrounding genes were identical to those reported for plasmids of A. baumannii and A. lwoffi strains. This is the first report of bla NDM-1 in A. soli, together with a high prevalence of OXA-23 carbapenemase for carbapenem resistance in Acinetobacter spp. in Cuba.

BACKGROUND: The low FODMAP diet eliminates carbohydrates and fermentable alcohols because they are not absorbed by the intestine, but are fermented by the microbiota, causing bloating and flatulence. AIMS: To evaluate the clinical response to the low FODMAP diet in patients with the different clinical subtypes of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients attended to at the Gastroenterology Department in 2014 that were diagnosed with IBS based on the Rome III criteria were included in the study. They were managed with a low FODMAP diet for 21 days and their response to the symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence, and stool form pre and post-diet were evaluated through the visual analogue scale, Bristol scale, and patient overall satisfaction. The results were analyzed by means, 95% CI, and the Student's t test. RESULTS: Of the 31 patients included in the study, 87% were women and the mean age was 46.48 years. Distribution was: IBS-C 64.5%, IBS-D 22.6%, and IBS-M 12.9%. The score for pain was 6.0 (95% CI 5.04-6.96) and the post-diet score was 2.77 (95% CI 1.60-3.95) (P<.001). The score for bloating was 7.10 (95% CI 6.13-8.06) and the post-diet score was 4.19 (95% CI 2.95-5.44) (P<.001). The score for flatulence was 5.94 (95% CI 4.79-7.08) and the post-diet score was 3.06 (IC95% 1.99-4.14) (P<.001). The pre-diet Bristol Scale result was 3.68 (95% CI 3.14-4.22) and the post-diet result was 4.10 (95% CI 3.66-4.54) (P=.1). The satisfaction percentage was 70.9%. CONCLUSIONS: In this first study on a Mexican population with IBS, there was significant improvement of the main symptoms, including pain, bloating, and flatulence after treatment with a low FODMAP diet.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a category of aggressive malignancies that represent clinically, molecularly, and etiologically heterogeneous tumors. The majority of OSCCs are associated with tobacco and alcohol use, acting both independently and synergistically, which suggests that the environment plays an important role in carcinogenesis; however, the mechanisms associated with the development of OSCC are not well understood. It has been proposed that the epigenetic components could be implicated in the initiation and progression of OSCC. Primarily, aberrant DNA methylation patterns have been widely addressed in the study of OSCC. Diverse studies have proposed that other epigenetic processes such as post-translational histone modification, the deposition of histone variants, histone chaperones, and recently non-coding RNA, can be also involved in the development of oral cancer. In this review we focus on describing the new insights of the epigenetics processes that are related with OSCC as histones variants and long non-coding RNAs.

El uso excesivo de fármacos en la industria veterinaria genera bioacumulación en órganos, tejidos, músculos y grasa animal. Dependiendo de la concentración, estos residuos llegan al hombre vía cadena alimentaria. La normatividad para dicha problemática en algunos países, no es suficiente, por eso es fundamental establecer normas estipuladas por la unión europea, sentando bases para su vigilancia y control a nivel nacional. La seguridad alimentaria está relacionada con el uso de fármacos y sus residuos, ejemplo de ellos, son las sulfonamidas, quinolonas y cloranfenicol, que se han encontrado en diferentes animales de abasto. En esta revisión, se incluyen técnicas analíticas empleadas para la identificación de los residuos generados por fármacos, enfatizando en aquellas tecnologías de reciente desarrollo y que son herramientas fundamentales para el control de esta problemática. La cromatografía líquida combinada con la espectrometría de masas y sus diferentes sistemas de interfaces, son las tecnologías más recomendadas para la detección de este tipo de residuos en diferentes matrices alimentarias.


The excessive use of drugs in the veterinary industry generates bioaccumulation in animal organs, tissues, muscles and fat. Depending on the concentration, these residues can reach man via the food chain. Food safety comprehends the use of these drugs and their residues such as sulfonamides, chloramphenicol and quinolones, which have been found in different slaughter animals. Some countries have limited regulations to control this issue. The implementation of standards set by the European Union is essential to monitor and control this problem at a national level. In this review, we use analytical techniques to identify the residues produced by these drugs, focusing on recently developed technologies that are essential tools to control this problem. Liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry and its various interface systems is the most recommended technology to detect residues in various food matrices.


O uso excessivo de drogas na indústria veterinária gera bio-acumulação em órgãos, tecidos, músculos e gordura animal. Dependendo da concentração, estes resíduos chegam ao homem através da cadeia alimentar. Os regulamentos para este problema em alguns países não é suficiente, por isso é essencial estabelecer normas estipuladas pela União Europeia, que determina as bases para o monitoramento e controle a nível nacional. A segurança alimentar está relacionada com o uso de fármacos e seus resíduos, por exemplo, sulfonamidas, quinolonas e cloranfenicol os quais foram encontrados em diferentes animais para abate. Nesta revisão, incluem-se técnicas analíticas utilizadas para a identificação dos resíduos gerados pelos fármacos, enfatizando as tecnologias recentemente desenvolvidas as quais são ferramentas essenciais para controlar este problema. Cromatografia líquida combinada com a espectrometria de massa e seus vários sistemas de interfaces são as tecnologias mais recomendadas para a deteção deste tipo de resíduos em diversas matrizes alimentares.
