RESUMO

We surveyed European infectious disease epidemiologists and microbiologists about their decisions to apply for Ebola response missions. Of 368 respondents, 49 (15%) had applied. Applicants did not differ from non-applicants in terms of age, sex or profession but had more training in field epidemiology and more international experience. Common concerns included lack of support from families and employers. Clearer terms of reference and support from employers could motivate application and support outbreak response in West Africa.

RESUMO

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder appearing during childhood. Multimodal strategies have been developed to treat this disorder, some of them including medication. To this day in France, prescriptions are mainly based on methylphenidate. Ever since this drug was marketed in France in 1995, it has been subject to enhanced monitoring, mainly because of the risk of dependence, abuse, and misuse. The present study aims at assessing (1) whether the recommendations on methylphenidate use for children are being respected, (2) the extent of problematic use of methylphenidate, and (3) the impact of said recommendations being respected on the development of problematic consumption. We studied patients who were treated with methylphenidate in an academic child psychiatry department. We specifically developed a semistructured interview grid for this study. Both parents and children were interviewed. In almost three out of four cases, at least one recommendation had not been followed (52% of patients did not follow the recommendation of stopping use during weekends and holidays). We found an average of 1.6 (range, 0-5) recommendations that were not respected. In almost two out of three cases, the consumption of methylphenidate was problematic; for 40% of children, this meant the search for at least one effect other than the expected therapeutic effects, such as an intellectual, creative, or athletic boosting effect. Approximately one-third of parents also sought an effect other than therapeutic for their child. Conversely, if all of the prescription recommendations were followed, less problematic consumption was observed. Methylphenidate-based treatments must therefore be implemented after a specialist has evaluated the patient and be prescribed following the recommendations. In this context, the treatment's benefits are undeniable.

RESUMO

Membrane targeting of the human immunodeficiency virus Gag proteins is dependent on phosphatidylinositol-(4,5)-bisphosphate [PI(4,5)P(2)] located in the plasma membrane. In order to determine if evolutionarily distant retroviral Gag proteins are targeted by a similar mechanism, we generated mutants of the matrix (MA) domain of murine leukemia virus (MuLV) Gag, examined their binding to membrane models in vitro, and analyzed their phenotypes in cell culture. In vitro, we showed that MA bound all the phosphatidylinositol phosphates with significant affinity but displayed a strong specificity for PI(4,5)P(2) only if enhanced by phosphatidylserine. Mutations in the polybasic region in MA dramatically reduced this affinity. In cells, virus production was strongly impaired by PI(4,5)P(2) depletion under conditions of 5ptaseIV overexpression, and mutations in the MA polybasic region altered Gag localization, membrane binding, and virion production. Our results suggest that the N-terminal polybasic cluster of MA is essential for Gag targeting to the plasma membrane. The binding of the MA domain to PI(4,5)P(2) appears to be a conserved feature among retroviruses despite the fact that the MuLV-MA domain is structurally different from that of human immunodeficiency virus types 1 and 2 and lacks a readily identifiable PI(4,5)P(2) binding cleft.

RESUMO

Two experiments examined the role of individual differences and of spatial organisation of items in the choice of strategy used in describing environments from memory. The three environments presented in slides had different spatial layouts: a linear order (the river), the complete absence of a linear order (the market), and a mixture of the two (the square). Experiment 1 assessed whether two groups of subjects who differed for the use of rotation in a mental rotation task "Rotators" and "Jumpers"), would also use different strategies (either "Tour" or "Jump") in describing an environment. Results showed that spatial organisation had a strong effect on the choice of strategy, but individual differences were also present. Strategy stability was then examined in Experiment 2 by repeating the description three times. The relevant effect of item spatial organisation on strategy choice was again found, but limited to "new" material, i.e. to the first presentation, while the Tour strategy appeared from trial two. Results are interpreted in terms of the role of the cognitive load the material imposes on short-term memory, explaining the effect of spatial layout, as well as individual differences. This explanation is also compatible with the observed predominance of the Tour strategy, especially when material is well known.

RESUMO

The present research was designed to investigate the concept of familiarity and how different kinds of familiarity could affect the coding and memory of places having specific and strong functional significance, i.e., sport courts. Tennis and basketball were selected. Users and nonusers of such sport courts had first to describe a sport court taking the necessary information from their stored schematic knowledge and then to describe a sport court previously seen in a photograph. Subjects' verbal reports showed a certain superiority of users' performance, a commonly found place effect, and the presence of errors only on the second task and mainly by the users group. The results are discussed in terms of the environmental schemata theory and of the different kinds of familiarity considered.

RESUMO

Recall and recognition of various aspects of three places were studied under incidental and intentional conditions. Data showed that subjects passing through a place incidentally remembered structural features such as walls better than variable features such as furniture. On the other hand, subjects passing through a place knowing they will be tested for memory of its remembered the variable elements better than the structural elements. The results are interpreted in terms of intentionally governed coding.
