RESUMO

The purpose of the study was to analyze the prevalence of different forms of partial edentulism and the description of the various parameters associated with this disease. Materials and Methods. The study was conducted on a total of 204 subjects who presented themselves at the Clinic of Dental Prosthetics and Oral Rehabilitation Clinic of the Faculty of Dentistry Craiova between October 2015 and June 2016. Results. Of the 204 subjects diagnosed with partial edentulism, 51.47% belonged to the age group of 20-29 years, 52.46% were female and 82.84% came from the urban environment. The most frequent cause of the edentulism was dental caries and their complications. The present study has shown that the partial edentulism forms encountered, especially those of the Kennedy III class, had an increased frequency among the young population, especially in the maxillary arch.

RESUMO

Tuberculosis remains one of the most important infectious disease worldwide and skeletal form has an incidence between 3% and 10%, depending on geographic area. The thoracolumbar junction is the most commonly involved in vertebral tuberculosis; some radiologic features are specifics, but other could be indistinguishable from that of lymphoma or metastases. We discuss the case of a 80-year-old man presented with a 2-month history of thoracolumbar pain, fatigability and fever. The vertebral radiography showed narrowing of the intervertebral disc space between T1 and T12, adjacent irregularity, erosion and lisis of vertebres, features visibles also on computed tomography. After the exclusion of the other causes of osteolisis, we started a standard regimen of tuberculostatic treatment and after one month of treatment the symptoms of patient improved noticeably. Other problems of diagnostic and treatment modalities of spinal tuberculosis are discussed.

RESUMO

The increased uptake of hexose by mammalian cells is considered to be a general response to stress. Nowadays, mistletoe lectin separated from the extracts of the European mistletoe (Viscum album L.) is often used in adjuvant cancer therapy. The present work studies the effect of the lectin on unirradiated and x-irradiated tumour cells. The response of cultured human lung carcinoma cells (Calu-1) was followed by radioactive glucose uptake as well as by tritiated thymidine incorporation. The cells were maintained either in a complete or a so-called restrictive medium. Slight metabolic changes were found in the restrictive medium but not in the complete one. Mistletoe lectin I at a very low concentration (0.001 ng/mL) increased the glucose uptake and thymidine incorporation. Ionizing radiation (1 Gy) did not influence the hexose uptake but it enhanced the incorporation of thymidine. It seems that the actions of two different factors (mistletoe lectin I and radiation) proved to be rather provoking stress effects for the tumour cells as detected in the restrictive medium.

RESUMO

Forty-five patients with symptomatic established delayed union and nonunion of the scaphoid were operated between January 1983 and December 1997. The Russe anterior corticocancellous bone-grafting was performed in twenty-five cases. Using a grading system, we analyzed the suitability of this method, for three types of nonunion. We attained a 92% bony union rate of all nonunions grafted. Review of the relevant literature shows that there was same significant difference in union rates between the types of nonunion, the vascularity of the proximal fragment and the presence of dorsal intercalated segment instability (DISI). The aims of this procedure are to obtain a good functional wrist without pain and to prevent late arthritis.

RESUMO

A great deal of progress has been made in recent years with respect to understanding the normal and pathological anatomy of the wrist. A careful history and physical examination continued with a critical review of the standard radiographs, supplemented by additional studies as indicated, allow the astute clinician to identify specific patterns of instability and to formulate an effective treatment program for the patients. The most frequent type of ligamentous instability of the wrist was classical defined by Linscheid (1972) as "carpal injury in which a loss of normal alignment of the carpal bones develops early or late".

RESUMO

The aim of this work was to study the modification of some biochemical parameters induced in animals irradiated by in vivo contamination with tritiated water (HTO). Four groups of animals were chronically irradiated by ingestion over 145 d. Irradiation doses were, respectively, 4, 9, 27, and 49 cGy. Another group was a control (nonirradiated) group. We followed the peroxidation level in bone marrow tissue using the thiobarbituric acid test, and results are expressed by malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration (mol MDA/mg protein). We adapted known methods to the study of a very small amount of tissue. We also followed the variation of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) concentration (mol/mg protein) in the tissue. The studied parameters seem to be influenced by irradiation, but not necessarily in a monotonous way with respect to irradiation dose. The peroxide level reported to mg protein is modified in a statistically significant way only for the highest dose. DNA content was found to decrease for irradiated rats starting with the lowest dose, and the peroxide level reported for DNA content increased for irradiated animals.

RESUMO

The inhibition of water diffusion across the rat erythrocyte membrane was studied by NMR using two basically different types of inhibitory agents: PCMB and in vivo irradiation. The contribution of lipid and protein to water permeability revealed the inhibitory effect of each pathway. Internal contamination with tritium (25-115 mGy) reduces water permeability due to protein modifications; for doses higher than 100 mGy the lipid mediated mechanism seems also to be impaired. The same procedure enables one to assess the extent to which the higher water permeability of rat, compared to human, erythrocyte is due to one of the two pathways.

RESUMO

Based on their own experience and literature, the authors review the etiopathogenic, anatomo-clinical, diagnostic and management aspects of torso-metatarsal dislocations. The surgical treatment by open reduction or reposition-arthrodesis, as a first or secondary step, using Kirschner wire and staples, are more and more used. The early and late complications, which may aggravate the long-term functional prognosis are detailed.

RESUMO

Electrofusion was employed for hybrid construction in ergosterol-producing yeast strains. Some fusion products proved to be hybrid with respect to ergosterol content and to remain stable over several generations.

RESUMO

The effects produced by chronic in vivo tritium contamination on the process of water diffusion across the rat erythrocyte membranes were investigated using an NMR relaxation method. As the level of tritium intake increased, an inhibition of the water permeability was observed, reaching values of 40% for corresponding absorbed doses of about 100 mGy. The activation energy of the transport process was also significantly increased, suggesting that the mechanism of the water diffusion across the membrane had changed.
