RESUMO

Due to the fact that the existing generation of wireless communication cannot possibly keep up with the current traffic explosion and emerging applications, research and development on next-generation (i.e., sixth generation, 6G) wireless technologies is being carried out worldwide. In this regard, it is anticipated that the space-air-ground (SAG) network with free space optics (FSO) communication can provide the terabits per second throughput necessary to sustain various potential 6G applications. However, FSO communications are susceptible to atmospheric turbulence, pointing errors, and beam scintillation effects. To remedy the severe atmospheric effects, we propose a multiple high-altitude platform station (HAPS)-based SAG network with a HAPS selection scheme. For the proposed system, we have derived the closed-form expressions for outage probability, average symbol error rate (SER), ergodic capacity, and outage capacity over Málaga distribution with pointing errors. Further, the asymptotic expressions for outage probability, average SER, and outage capacity were derived to enhance the comprehension of the system from a practical standpoint. It is observed from the numerical results that the multiple HAPS-based FSO system performs better than the existing HAPS-based FSO systems.

The increasing daily use of cosmetic and personal care ingredients (CPCIs) requires improved understanding of the fate and impacts of CPCIs in environmental systems. Effects of CPCIs on colloidal properties of various geocolloids such as iron oxides (goethite, haematite), clay minerals (kaolinite, bentonite) and soil clays (kaolinitic-, illitic- and lateritic soil clays) were studied by tracking time-resolved changes in zeta potential (ζ) and observing suspended particle density. Two polymers representing anionic CPCIs, i.e., polyacrylate crosspolymer-11 (PC11) and cationic CPCIs, i.e., polyDADMAC (PD) show contrast effects on ζ and colloidal properties of the selected materials. While PC11 tended to associate with Fe oxides, PD can be adsorbed by clay minerals and soil clays. The neutralization due to the sorption of either PC11 or PD onto opposite-charge sign surface sites can lower the net surface charge of the materials, thereby enhancing electrostatic attraction, stimulating particle size growth, and eventually intensifying co-aggregation. The observed colloidal properties of iron oxides, clay minerals and soil clays under the presence of PC11 and PD may reflect what are happening in many aquatic environments where CPCIs co-exist with various mineral colloids. Therein, CPCIs likely delay the transport of the opposite-charge sign colloids, while they increase the dispersibility and transportability of the same-charge sign colloids. This implies that intensifying presence of a given CPCI could have selective effects on colloid systems. As a whole, CPCIs can change the fate and the final destination of mineral colloids and themselves; therefore, their effects and relevant treatment techniques need to be included into the future agenda.

Understanding the burden and factors related to chemotherapy-induced toxicity is important in treatment planning for breast cancer patients. We conducted a prospective study among 396 newly diagnosed and chemotherapy-treated breast cancer patients recruited in two major cancer hospitals in northern Vietnam. Toxicities were captured through medical chart reviews and patient self-reports and graded using NCI CTCAE classification. Associations for sociodemographic and clinical factors with chemotherapy-induced toxicities during first-line chemotherapy were evaluated via multivariable logistic regression. Severe (i.e., grade ≥ 3) hematological (38.6%), and gastrointestinal (12.9%) toxicities were common. A pre-existing nephrological condition was significantly associated with the risk of severe hematological toxicity with adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of 2.30 (1.32-4.01). Patients living in rural areas had a lower risk of severe hematological toxicity (OR = 0.48; 95% CI, 0.30-0.77). Patients diagnosed with stage II and stage III-IV had a lower risk of severe gastrointestinal toxicity with ORs and 95% CIs of 0.26 (0.12-0.59) and 0.47 (0.20-1.10), respectively. Triple-negative/basal-like subtype was associated with a higher risk of severe hematological (OR = 3.15; 95% CI, 1.56-6.34) and gastrointestinal toxicities (OR = 3.60; 95% CI, 1.45-8.95) comparing to hormone receptor (HR)-positive HER2-negative subtype. Further research investigating underlying mechanisms would facilitate the development and delivery of personalized treatment and care plans.

Viral spillover from animal reservoirs can trigger public health crises and cripple the world economy. Knowing which viruses are primed for zoonotic transmission can focus surveillance efforts and mitigation strategies for future pandemics. Successful engagement of receptor protein orthologs is necessary during cross-species transmission. The clade 1 sarbecoviruses including Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-related Coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and SARS-CoV-2 enter cells via engagement of angiotensin converting enzyme-2 (ACE2), while the receptor for clade 2 and clade 3 remains largely uncharacterized. We developed a mixed cell pseudotyped virus infection assay to determine whether various clades 2 and 3 sarbecovirus spike proteins can enter HEK 293T cells expressing human or Rhinolophus horseshoe bat ACE2 proteins. The receptor binding domains from BtKY72 and Khosta-2 used human ACE2 for entry, while BtKY72 and Khosta-1 exhibited widespread use of diverse rhinolophid ACE2s. A lysine at ACE2 position 31 appeared to be a major determinant of the inability of these RBDs to use a certain ACE2 sequence. The ACE2 protein from Rhinolophus alcyone engaged all known clade 3 and clade 1 receptor binding domains. We observed little use of Rhinolophus ACE2 orthologs by the clade 2 viruses, supporting the likely use of a separate, unknown receptor. Our results suggest that clade 3 sarbecoviruses from Africa and Europe use Rhinolophus ACE2 for entry, and their spike proteins appear primed to contribute to zoonosis under the right conditions.

BACKGROUND: Delays in diagnosis and treatment from first noticeable breast cancer symptoms are associated with poor outcomes. Understanding the reasons and barriers for patients' delay in seeking medical care is critical to mitigating the problem. METHODS: In-person surveys were conducted among 462 women, aged 18-79, with incident breast cancer cases, recruited from two cancer hospitals in North Vietnam. Delay, defined as the time interval between symptom recognition to the diagnosis and initiation of treatment equal to or exceeding 3 months, was categorized as follows: no delay (<3 months), moderate delay (3-8 months), and serious delay (≥9 months). Multivariable multinomial logistic regression was applied in data analyses. RESULTS: Over one-quarter patients (31.5%) experienced moderate delays, and close to one-fifth (17.5%) experienced serious delays. Adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for moderate and serious delays were 5.60 (3.00-10.47) and 4.25 (2.05-8.85) for financial and physical barriers, respectively. Moderate delay was positively associated with psychological barriers (5.55 [1.75-17.57]) and lack of proper knowledge (3.15 [1.47-6.74]). The associations of barriers with delays in diagnosis and treatment appeared stronger among women living in rural areas. A lack of proper knowledge was significantly associated with delay among young women (<45 years old) and those with high incomes, while psychological barriers were significantly associated with delay among older women (≥45 years old). CONCLUSION: Delays in diagnosis and treatment are common among Vietnamese breast cancer patients and are affected by several noted barriers. Proper policy needs to be developed to address this public health issue.

Labeling data for classification requires significant human effort. To reduce labeling cost, instead of labeling every instance, a group of instances (bag) is labeled by a single bag label. Computer algorithms are then used to infer the label for each instance in a bag, a process referred to as instance annotation. This task is challenging due to the ambiguity regarding the instance labels. We propose a discriminative probabilistic model for the instance annotation problem and introduce an expectation maximization framework for inference, based on the maximum likelihood approach. For many probabilistic approaches, brute-force computation of the instance label posterior probability given its bag label is exponential in the number of instances in the bag. Our contribution is a dynamic programming method for computing the posterior that is linear in the number of instances. We evaluate our method using both benchmark and real world data sets, in the domain of bird song, image annotation, and activity recognition. In many cases, the proposed framework outperforms, sometimes significantly, the current state-of-the-art MIML learning methods, both in instance label prediction and bag label prediction.

Previous studies show that, compared to on-off keying (OOK) signaling, pulse-position modulation (PPM) is favorable in FSO/CDMA systems thanks to its energy efficiency and simple detection. Nevertheless, when the system bit rate increases and the transmission distance is far, the FSO/CDMA systems using PPM signaling critically suffer from the impact of pulse broadening caused by dispersion, especially when the modulation level is high. In this paper, we therefore propose to use multi-wavelength PPM (MWPPM) signaling to overcome the limitation of PPM. To further improve the system performance, avalanche photodiode (APD) is also used. The performance of the proposed system is theoretically analyzed using a realistic model of Gaussian pulse propagation. To model the impact of intensity fluctuation caused by the atmospheric turbulence, the log-normal channel is used. We find that, by using MWPPM, the effects of both intensity fluctuation and pulse broadening are mitigated, the BER is therefore significantly improved. Additionally, we quantitatively show that the system performance is further improved by using APD, especially when the average APD gain is chosen properly.

In this paper, we comprehensively analyze the impact of four wave mixing (FWM) on the performance of incoherent multi-wavelength optical code-division multiple-access (MW-OCDMA) systems. We also consider many other interferences and noises, including multiple access interference, optical beating interference, and receiver noise, in the analysis. From the numerical results, we can find the power ranges of different MW-OCDMA systems, in which the impact of FWM is dominant and consequently results in an increase in the bit-error rate of the systems. We also find that the impact of FWM becomes more severe when the frequency spacing is small and/or dispersion-shifted fiber is used. In addition, we quantitatively discuss the impact of FWM on the number of supportable users and power penalty in the MW-OCDMA systems.

Potential irreversible ligands were prepared, based on a series of 3-(1-piperazinyl)propyl-N,N-bis(4-fluorophenyl)amines, as molecular probes for the dopamine transporter (DAT). Both azido- and isothiocyanato-substituted phenylalkyl analogues were synthesized and evaluated for displacement of [(3)H]WIN 35 428 in rat caudate putamen tissue. All of the analogues showed moderate binding potencies at the DAT. The azido analogue, 16b, was radioiodinated and used to photolabel human DAT-transfected HEK 293 cell membranes. [(125)I]16b irreversibly labeled an approximately 80 kDa band corresponding to the DAT detected by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. This radioligand provides a novel addition to the growing arsenal of structurally diverse irreversible ligands that are being used to identify binding domains on the DAT. Characterizing points of attachment of these irreversible probes to the DAT protein will ultimately help elucidate the three-dimensional arrangement of the transmembrane domains, identify individual binding sites of the DAT inhibitors, and direct future drug design.
