RESUMO

Stretchable electronics offer soft, biocompatible mechanical properties; these same properties make them susceptible to device failure associated with physical impact. This paper studies designs for stretchable electronics that resist failure from impacts due to incorporation of a viscoelastic encapsulation layer. Results indicate that the impact resistance depends on the thickness and viscoelastic properties of the encapsulation layer, as well as the duration of impact. An analytic model for the critical thickness of the encapsulation layer is established. It is shown that a commercially available, low modulus silicone material offers viscous properties that make it a good candidate as the encapsulation layer for stretchable electronics.

RESUMO

A mechanics model is developed for the encapsulated piezoelectric thin-film actuators/sensors system imperfectly bonded to the human skin to simultaneously determine the Young's moduli of the epidermis and dermis as well as the thickness of epidermis.

RESUMO

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the preferred treatment for uncomplicated cholelithiasis. After brief perioperative surveillance and a follow-up visit, most of patients who have undergone laparoscopic cholecystectomy are discharged from further surgical care and treated by their primary care physician. This case report discusses an unusual complication in a patient who presented to her family physician 4 years after a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The surgical literature on this complication is reviewed.

RESUMO

The telephone, a ubiquitous instrument in the practice of medicine, continues to have new applications for clinical practice. The goals of the ever-increasing managed care environment appear to fit nicely with these applications. Heightened attention toward telephone education, protocol development, and documentation are needed. This article reviews characteristics of telephone encounters, the telephone in managed care, trends in "telemedicine," telephone education, and medicolegal aspects of telephone care.
