RESUMO

Superatom electron shell and/or geometric shell filling underlies the thermodynamic stability of coinage and alkali metal clusters in both theoretical and experimental results. Factors beyond simple shell filling contribute substantially to the lifetime of ligated clusters in solution. Such factors include the nature of the solvent, the atmosphere and the steric size of the ligand shell. Here we systematically lay out a 'practical' stability model for ligated metal clusters, which includes both shell-closing aspects and colloidal stability aspects. Cluster decomposition may follow either fusion or fission pathways. Solvent polarity can be determinative of the decomposition pathway.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of a scalable obesity treatment program integrated with pediatric primary care (PC) and delivered using interactive voice technology (IVR) to families from underserved populations. DESIGN AND METHODS: Fifty parent-child dyads (child 9-12 yrs, BMI > 95th percentile) were recruited from a pediatric PC clinic and randomized to either an IVR or a wait-list control (WLC) group. The majority were lower-income, African-American (72%) families. Dyads received IVR calls for 12 weeks. Call content was informed by two evidence-based interventions. Anthropometric and behavioral variables were assessed at baseline and 3-month follow-up. RESULTS: Forty-three dyads completed the study. IVR parents ate one cup more fruit than WLC (P < 0.05). No other group differences were found. Children classified as high users of the IVR decreased weight, BMI, and BMI z-score compared to low users ( P < 0.05). Mean number of calls for parents and children were 9.1 (5.2 SD) and 9.0 (5.7 SD), respectively. Of those who made calls, >75% agreed that the calls were useful, made for people like them, credible, and helped them eat healthy foods. CONCLUSION: An obesity treatment program delivered via IVR may be an acceptable and feasible resource for families from underserved populations.

RESUMO

The reaction of ANCA with ANCA antigens on the surface of neutrophils may play a critical role in the pathogenesis of ANCA vasculitis. Therefore, an understanding of the circumstances that result in surface expression of these antigens is important for an understanding of pathogenic mechanisms. In this study we investigated the surface expression of ANCA antigens on quiescent, primed, and apoptotic neutrophils. ANCA antigens and other granule constituents were not detected on the surface of neutrophils in freshly heparinized blood. ANCA antigens were on the surface of neutrophils primed by in vitro incubation for 4 h and 8 h. These cells did not show evidence of apoptosis. After 24 h incubation, about 30% of the neutrophils were apoptotic, and ANCA antigens and other granule constituents were present on the surface of both apoptotic and non-apoptotic cells. Our data indicate that there are no ANCA antigens on the surface of quiescent neutrophils, but that they are on the surface of primed neutrophils before the cells become apoptotic, and remain on the surface of cells after they become apoptotic. Based on these observations, we hypothesize that ANCA can react in vivo with primed but not quiescent neutrophils. Previously published observations indicate that the interaction of ANCA with primed neutrophils results in neutrophil activation, which may be involved in the pathogenesis of ANCA vasculitis.

RESUMO

The command and control approach is compared with the Emergent Human Resources Model (EHRM) approach to emergency management. Four decades of systematic research shows that a rigid, bureaucratic command and control approach to emergency management generally leads to an ineffective emergency response. Previous studies and our own research suggest that flexible, malleable, loosely coupled, organizational configurations can create a more effective disaster response.
