RESUMO

Four new coordination polymers (CPs) have been prepared and evaluated for their efficacy in adsorbing hydrogen sulfide. The reactions of the structurally flexible assembling dithione ligand, L, with different silver(I) salts lead to four new metal-organic coordination architectures (CPs I, III, V, and VIII) exhibiting either one- or two-dimensional networks. CP I, 2D-[(Ag2Cl2)L]n, exhibits a linear series of rhomboid (S)2Ag(µ2-Cl)2Ag(S)2 secondary building units (SBUs) where S is one of the thione functions of L, altogether forming a 2D-network. CP III, 2D-[(AgI)L]n, is built upon parallel staircase-shaped 1D-[Ag2(µ3-I)2]n SBUs bridged by S atoms of L that form a 2D-grid. CP V, 2D-[(AgL)(NO3)]n, presents parallel 1D-folded S-shaped [AgL]n+ chains linked by strong argentophilic Ag···Ag interactions, forming a 2D-scaffolding. CP VIII, 1D-[(Ag2L3)(Cr2O7)]n, shows 1D-zigzag [{Ag(η2-µ2,η-µ,µ-L)}2]n2n+ chains accompanied by Cr2O72- counteranions. The adsorption isotherms of H2S gas by these new CPs were examined and compared to those of related CPs [(Ag2Br2)L]n (II), [(AgCN)4L]n (IV), [(Ag2L)(CF3SO3)2]n (VI), and [(Ag2L)(NO3)(ClO4)]n (VII). Among the tested polymers, the 3D-CP IV featuring cyanide anions exhibits the highest adsorption capacity of the CPs studied in this work. In order to determine the reason for this marked difference, density functional theory (DFT) computations were used. All in all, it turns out that the electrostatic interactions (CN-···H-SH) are significantly stronger than the O-···H-SH ones. This investigation provides a valuable conceptual tool for other designs of CPs and MOFs having the purpose of capturing toxic gases.

RESUMO

The optimal treatment strategy for men with localised prostatic cancer of low and intermediate risk is an actively evolving field. It is important to strike a balance between maximal oncological control and minimal treatment-related complications, which helps preserve the patients' quality of life. MR-guided transurethral ultrasound ablation (TULSA) has emerged as a minimally invasive treatment option for this group of patients. This article aims to provide of a background on TULSA technology, a step-by-step procedural guide of MR-guided TULSA and to summarise the current evidence of TULSA in management of localised prostatic cancer, as well as other potential indications.

Background: Soil animal communities include more than 40 higher-order taxa, representing over 23% of all described species. These animals have a wide range of feeding sources and contribute to several important soil functions and ecosystem services. Although many studies have assessed macroinvertebrate communities in Brazil, few of them have been published in journals and even fewer have made the data openly available for consultation and further use. As part of ongoing efforts to synthesise the global soil macrofauna communities and to increase the amount of openly-accessible data in GBIF and other repositories related to soil biodiversity, the present paper provides links to 29 soil macroinvertebrate datasets covering 42 soil fauna taxa, collected in various land-use systems in Brazil. A total of 83,085 georeferenced occurrences of these taxa are presented, based on quantitative estimates performed using a standardised sampling method commonly adopted worldwide to collect soil macrofauna populations, i.e. the TSBF (Tropical Soil Biology and Fertility Programme) protocol. This consists of digging soil monoliths of 25 x 25 cm area, with handsorting of the macroinvertebrates visible to the naked eye from the surface litter and from within the soil, typically in the upper 0-20 cm layer (but sometimes shallower, i.e. top 0-10 cm or deeper to 0-40 cm, depending on the site). The land-use systems included anthropogenic sites managed with agricultural systems (e.g. pastures, annual and perennial crops, agroforestry), as well as planted forests and native vegetation located mostly in the southern Brazilian State of Paraná (96 sites), with a few additional sites in the neighbouring states of São Paulo (21 sites) and Santa Catarina (five sites). Important metadata on soil properties, particularly soil chemical parameters (mainly pH, C, P, Ca, K, Mg, Al contents, exchangeable acidity, Cation Exchange Capacity, Base Saturation and, infrequently, total N), particle size distribution (mainly % sand, silt and clay) and, infrequently, soil moisture and bulk density, as well as on human management practices (land use and vegetation cover) are provided. These data will be particularly useful for those interested in estimating land-use change impacts on soil biodiversity and its implications for below-ground foodwebs, ecosystem functioning and ecosystem service delivery. New information: Quantitative estimates are provided for 42 soil animal taxa, for two biodiversity hotspots: the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes. Data are provided at the individual monolith level, representing sampling events ranging from February 2001 up to September 2016 in 122 sampling sites and over 1800 samples, for a total of 83,085 ocurrences.

Neuronal connectivity is regulated during normal brain development with the arrangement of spines and synapses being dependent on the morphology of dendrites. Further, in multiple neurodevelopmental and aging disorders, disruptions of dendrite formation or shaping is associated with atypical neuronal connectivity. We showed previously that Pdlim5 binds delta-catenin and promotes dendrite branching. We report here that Pdlim5 interacts with PalmD, a protein previously suggested by others to interact with the cytoskeleton (e.g., via adducin/spectrin) and to regulate membrane shaping. Functionally, the knockdown of PalmD or Pdlim5 in rat primary hippocampal neurons dramatically reduces branching and conversely, PalmD exogenous expression promotes dendrite branching as does Pdlim5. Further, we show that each proteins' effects are dependent on the presence of the other. In summary, using primary rat hippocampal neurons we reveal the contributions of a novel Pdlim5:PalmD protein complex, composed of functionally inter-dependent components responsible for shaping neuronal dendrites.

The prediction of the metal cluster within a coordination polymer or complex, as well as the dimensionality of the resulting polymer or complex (i.e., 0D, 1D, 2D, or 3D), is often challenging. This is the case for Ph2P(CH2)mPPh2 ligands (1 ≤ m ≤ 8) and CuX salts, particularly for X = I. This work endeavors a systematic statistical analysis combining studies in the literature and new data, mapping the nature of the resulting CuI aggregates with eight different diphoshphines in 2:1, 3:2, 1:1, 2:3, and 1:2 CuI:Ph2P(CH2)mPPh2 molar ratios as a function of m, which lead to either pure products or mixtures. Several trends are made relating stoichiometry and chain length to the CuI cluster formed (i.e., globular vs. quasi-planar). Four new X-ray structures were determined: [Cu3I2(L1)3]I, Cu3I3(L2)2, Cu2I2(L6)2, and Cu4I4(L8)2, where m is, respectively, 1, 2, 6, and 8, in which the CuxIy central aggregates adopt triangular bipyramid, diamond, rhomboid, and cubane shaped motifs, respectively. Photophysical measurements assisted the establishment of trends considering the paucity of the crystallographic structures. During this study, it was also found that the 0D-complex Cu2I2(Ph2P(CH2)5PPh2)2 exhibits thermally activated delayed fluorescence.

A new metal-organic framework (MOF; [Zn4O(hett)4/3(fluo)1/2(bdc)1/2]n; TFT-MOF) constructed on chromophoric ligands 5,5',10,10',15,15'-hexaethyltruxene-2,7,12-triacetate (hett), 9-fluorenone-2,7-dicarboxylate (fluo), terephthalate (bdc), and the Zn4O node has been prepared and identified by powder X-ray diffraction. This luminescent MOF exhibits large mesoporous pores of 2.7 nm based on computer modeling using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectra and photophysical parameters of TFT-MOF have been investigated and compared with those of the free ligands and their basic chromophores. All in all, TFT-MOF exhibits particularly efficient singlet-singlet energy-transfer processes described as 1(hett)* → (fluo) and 1(bdc)* → (fluo), leading to fluorescence arising for the fluo lumophore operating only through Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) with an efficiency of transfer of up to >95%. This experimental conclusion was corroborated by DFT and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT). For the 1(hett)* → (fluo) process, the approximated overall rate constant of energy transfer was evaluated to be at most 2.04 × 1010 s-1 (using a Stern-Volmer approach of solution data and the relationship between distance and concentration). This process was analyzed using the Förster theory, where two intrapore energy transfer paths of center-to-center distances of 13 and 25 Å have been identified. TFT-MOF photosensitizes the formation of singlet oxygen (1O2 (1Σg)) as detected by its phosphorescence signal at 1275 nm.

Aging is an inevitable process with senescence being one of its hallmarks. Recent advances have indicated that the elimination of senescent cells can reduce the signs of aging and increase healthy life span. Here, we identify a negative modulator of aging, Sprr1a, and in turn a negative modulator of Sprr1a, miR-130b. We show that reductions in Sprr1a levels, including via miR-130b expression, promotes cell senescence-like phenotype. We find that mediators of senescence, such as inflammatory cytokines and cell cycle regulators, are modulated by the miR-130b and Sprr1a-related pathway. For example, the levels of p16, p53 and p21 become decreased or increased upon the respective expression of Sprr1a versus miR-130b. Further, as shown in relation to p16 levels and ß-galactosidase levels, cells expressing Sprr1a exhibit significant protection from senescence-inducing factors such as radiation or Doxorubicin, suggesting that Sprr1a might contribute to protection against age-related pathologies. Taken together, we introduce two modulators of properties associated with senescence-like phenotype.

PURPOSE: Chest x-ray (CXR) is the standard imaging used to evaluate children in acute respiratory distress and failure. Our objective was to compare the lung-imaging techniques of CXR and lung ultrasound (LUS) in the evaluation of children with acute respiratory failure (ARF) to quantify agreement and to determine which technique identified a higher frequency of pulmonary abnormalities. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a prospective observational study evaluating the sensitivity and specificity of LUS in children with ARF from 12/2018 to 02/2020 completed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA). Children > 37.0 weeks corrected gestational age and ≤ 18 years of age admitted to the PICU with ARF were evaluated with LUS. We compared CXR and LUS completed within 6 h of each other. Kappa statistics (k) adjusted for maximum attainable agreement (k/kmax) were used to quantify agreement between imaging techniques and descriptive statistics were used to describe the frequency of abnormalities. RESULTS: Eighty-eight children had LUS completed, 32 with concomitant imaging completed within 6 h are included. There was fair agreement between LUS and CXR derived diagnoses with 58% agreement (k/kmax = 0.36). Evaluation of imaging patterns included: normal, 57% agreement (k = 0.032); interstitial pattern, 47% agreement (k = 0.003); and consolidation, 65% agreement (k = 0.29). CXR identified more imaging abnormalities than LUS. CONCLUSIONS: There is fair agreement between CXR and LUS-derived diagnoses in children with ARF. Given this, clinicians should consider the benefits and limitations of specific imaging modalities when evaluating children with ARF. Additional studies are necessary to further define the role of LUS in pediatric ARF given the small sample size of our study.

3D-[Zn4O(1,4-BDC)3•x(solvent)]n (MOF-5; BDC = 1,4-benzodicarboxylate) and 3D-[Zn2(BTTB)(DMF)2•(H2O)3]n (MOF-D; BTTB = 4,4',4″,4‴-benzene-1,2,4,5-tetrayltetrabenzoate) have been investigated by means of steady-state UV-visible and fluorescence and time-resolved emission spectroscopy, as a function of solvent and power of the excitation irradiation. The low-temperature X-ray structures (173 K) were permitted to locate solvent molecules (here H2O) in the lattice. They were found distributed in the middle in the voids with no evidence of specific interactions (H-bond, coulombic, and dipole-dipole) with the framework. The fluorescence decays of the ligands (ππ* excited state), τF, for the host-guest composites MOF-5@solvent and MOF-D@solvent (solvent = air, MeCN, EtCN, MeOH, EtOH, and DMF) were found bi-exponential (short τF1 (ps), and long τF2 (ns)) with one important feature: upon cooling from 298 to 77 K, MOF-5's τF1 decreases and τF2 increases, while the opposite trend is generally observed in MOF-D. The low values for τF1 (ps) in MOF-5 are associated with the augmented probability of solvent-ligand collisions leading to nonradiative deactivation, which upon cooling to 77 K increases further as the scaffolding contracts. The augmentation in τF2 is readily associated with the increased rigidity of the ligands that are not submitted to this effect (at the surface of the MOF and as pendent groups). For the low emitter MOF-D, the reversed situation is noted but not as clearly due to the uncertainties in the data. Upon increasing the excitation flux, the fluorescence intensity increases linearly with the laser power indicating the absence of singlet-singlet annihilation, inferring the absence of efficient exciton migration. This observation is explained by the small absorptivity coefficients, which leads to a small J spectral overlap between absorption and fluorescence according to the Forster and Dexter theories, and consequently, a small rate for energy migration. This conclusion drastically changes the perception of the photocatalytic mechanism of MOF-5 and other MOFs exhibiting similar absorption features (i.e., no antenna effect).

Most errors in clinical pathology originate in the preanalytical phase, which includes all steps from the preparation of animals and equipment to the collection of the specimen and its management until analyzed. Blood is the most common specimen collected in nonhuman primates. Other specimens collected include urine, saliva, feces, and hair. The primary concern is the variability of blood hematology and biochemistry results due to sampling conditions with the effects of capture, restraint, and/or anesthesia. Housing and diet have fewer effects, with the exception of food restriction to reduce obesity. There has been less investigation regarding the impact of sampling conditions of nonblood specimens.

Compared to most oncologic subspecialties, radiation oncology (RO) lacks a natural pathway for incorporation into the clinical clerkships, and few students ever complete a formal rotation in RO. The feasibility, and perceived value, of a 1-day "microclerkship" exposure in RO during other related clerkships was evaluated in this study. At a single institution, the RO clerkship director partnered with clerkship directors in medical oncology, palliative care, and radiology so that every 3rd or 4th year student would spend 1 day in RO during those clerkships. Afterwards, students completed an electronic survey containing multiple choice and 5-point Likert-type questions describing their experience. Descriptive statistics are reported. Ninety-seven students completed the RO microclerkship over 2 years, and 81 completed the survey (response rate 84%). Only 8 students (10%) had ever been in a RO department previously. During the microclerkship, 73 students (90%) saw at least one new patient consultation; 77 (95%) were involved in contouring or treatment planning; 76 (94%) saw treatment delivery; and 38 (47%) saw a brachytherapy procedure. Seventy-nine students (98%) felt that the microclerkship was at least moderately valuable (mean Likert-type rating 4.01, SD 0.73). Forty students (49%) were either somewhat or much more interested in participating in a longer (2-4 week) rotation in radiation oncology (mean Likert-type rating 3.59, SD 0.83). This study demonstrated the feasibility of incorporating a 1-day RO microclerkship into other related elective clerkships. Students viewed the experience favorably and found it valuable in their education.

Background: Mental disorders are a major health concern across the globe. Schizophrenia, one of the mental disorders, affects approximately 20 million people globally and 5 million people within the African continent. Schizophrenia can affect all areas of life, including participation in instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs). Objectives: The study aimed to explore personal barriers affecting participation in chosen IADLs among community-dwelling persons with schizophrenia in Kigali city, Rwanda. Method: A qualitative, embedded case study design and constructivist epistemology paradigm were used. Purposive sampling and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 participants that included 10 persons diagnosed with schizophrenia (case 1) and 10 of their caregivers (case 2). Data were analysed according to the seven steps of Ziebland and Mcpherson. Findings: The two themes identified were community negative attitudes and individual hindrances to participation in IADLs. Theme 1 demonstrated the community's poor support towards persons with schizophrenia due to the stigma attached to mental health illness, which is reported elsewhere. This paper reports on individual hindrances to participation, which revealed limited knowledge and skills, decreased motivation and interest, financial problems, maladaptive behaviours, medication side effects, loss of social interaction and isolation, and disorganised in performing activities to negatively affect persons with schizophrenia's full participation in their chosen IADLs. Conclusion: Community-dwelling persons with schizophrenia are experiencing various hindrances to participating in their chosen IADLs, which shows a need for support from different stakeholders to improve access and participation of persons with schizophrenia in their daily activities based on their abilities. Contribution: Different barriers affecting participation of the persons with schizophrenia in their chosen IADLs were highlighted together with the common affected IADLs. It is recommended that when right support is provided, persons with schizophrenia may function at their maximum abilities in their activities of choice and may live at their highest independence level.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) during pregnancy is associated with healthy gestational weight gain (GWG) and a reduced risk of developing gestational diabetes (GD), gestational hypertension (GHT) and fetal macrosomia. However, in Canada, less than 20% of pregnant women meet PA recommendations. This study assessed associations between an intervention including PA education by prenatal nurses and a PA prescription delivered by physicians and fetal and maternal outcomes. METHODS: This is a quasi-experimental study. Two groups of women who received their prenatal care at the obstetrics clinic of a university hospital were created. In the first group, 394 pregnant women followed at the clinic received standard care. In the second group, 422 women followed at the clinic received standard care supplemented with education on the relevance of PA during pregnancy and a prescription for PA. Data for both study groups were obtained from the medical records of the mothers and their newborns. Logistic regressions were used to compare the odds of developing excessive GWG, GD, GHT, and fetal macrosomia between the two study groups. RESULTS: The addition of PA education and PA prescription to prenatal care was associated with 29% lower odds of developing excessive GWG (adjusted odds ratios (OR) 0.71, 95% confidence intervals (CI) 0.51-0.99), 73% lower odds of developing GHT (0.27, 0.14-0.53), 44% lower odds of fetal macrosomia (> 4 kg) (0.56, 0.34-0.93), and 40% lower odds of being large for gestational age (0.60, 0.36-0.99). The intervention was not associated with a difference in odds of developing GD (0.48, 0.12-1.94). CONCLUSIONS: The inclusion of education and prescription of PA as part of routine prenatal care was associated with improvements in maternal and fetal health outcomes, including significantly lower odds of GWG, GHT and macrosomia.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: As residency programs in diagnostic radiology aspire to broaden trainee diversity, reliance on certain criteria may affect the selection of candidates from underrepresented groups. With the conversion of reporting of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 scores to pass/fail, programs may rely more on numerical USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) scores. The purpose of our investigation is to assess the effects of Step 2 CK scores on the selection of underrepresented minority (URM) and female candidates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Applications from United States senior allopathic medical students to a radiology residency program from the 2021-2023 National Residency Matching Program cycles were analyzed. Subjects were classified as male or female and URM or non-URM by self-identification. Step 2 CK scores were compared and the use of cutoff scores was examined for disparate effects. RESULTS: 1017 subjects fulfilled the entry criteria. There were 721 males and 296 females, with 164 URM and 853 non-URM candidates. Comparing males to females, there was no significant difference in the mean score (p = 0.21) and no disparate effects of cutoff scores. There was a significant difference between the mean score of URM versus non-URM candidates of eight points (p < 0.00011). The use of cutoffs showed a disparate effect on URM candidates with a cutoff score of 250 (average score for 2022 matched applicants) excluding 71% of URM candidates while excluding only 46% of non-URM candidates. CONCLUSION: Reliance on USMLE Step 2 CK scores to screen applications for radiology residency can disadvantage URM candidates. Females are not adversely affected.

RESUMO

We present a rare double aortic arch (DAA) diagnosis incidentally on CT in a 60-year-old male who presented with pneumonia. DAA is a vascular ring that typically manifests in infants or children due to compression of the esophagus or trachea, resulting in dysphagia or dyspnea. Diagnosis of DAA in adulthood is usually due to the delayed emergence of obstructive symptoms. We present a case of DAA in an adult patient without dysphagia or dyspnea. We discuss factors that can lead to the presentation of DAA in adults. These include an absence of associated congenital disabilities, insufficient tracheal or esophageal constriction in childhood and the onset of compressive symptoms later in life from decreased vascular compliance.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy is a non-invasive tool used to measure regional cerebral tissue oxygenation (rScO2) initially validated in adult and pediatric populations. Preterm neonates, vulnerable to neurologic injury, are attractive candidates for NIRS monitoring; however, normative data and the brain regions measured by the current technology have not yet been established for this population. METHODS: This study's aim was to analyze continuous rScO2 readings within the first 6-72 h after birth in 60 neonates without intracerebral hemorrhage born at ≤1250 g and/or ≤30 weeks' gestational age (GA) to better understand the role of head circumference (HC) and brain regions measured. RESULTS: Using a standardized brain MRI atlas, we determined that rScO2 in infants with smaller HCs likely measures the ventricular spaces. GA is linearly correlated, and HC is non-linearly correlated, with rScO2 readings. For HC, we infer that rScO2 is lower in infants with smaller HCs due to measuring the ventricular spaces, with values increasing in the smallest HCs as the deep cerebral structures are reached. CONCLUSION: Clinicians should be aware that in preterm infants with small HCs, rScO2 displayed may reflect readings from the ventricular spaces and deep cerebral tissue. IMPACT: Clinicians should be aware that in preterm infants with small head circumferences, cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy readings of rScO2 displayed may reflect readings from the ventricular spaces and deep cerebral tissue. This highlights the importance of rigorously re-validating technologies before extrapolating them to different populations. Standard rScO2 trajectories should only be established after determining whether the mathematical models used in NIRS equipment are appropriate in premature infants and the brain region(s) NIRS sensors captures in this population, including the influence of both gestational age and head circumference.

Dendritic arborization is essential for proper neuronal connectivity and function. Conversely, abnormal dendrite morphology is associated with several neurological pathologies like Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia. Among major intrinsic mechanisms that determine the extent of the dendritic arbor is cytoskeletal remodeling. Here, we characterize and compare the impact of the four proteins involved in cytoskeletal remodeling-vertebrate members of the p120-catenin subfamily-on neuronal dendrite morphology. In relation to each of their own distributions, we find that p120-catenin and delta-catenin are expressed at relatively higher proportions in growth cones compared to ARVCF-catenin and p0071-catenin; ARVCF-catenin is expressed at relatively high proportions in the nucleus; and all catenins are expressed in dendritic processes and the soma. Through altering the expression of each p120-subfamily catenin in neurons, we find that exogenous expression of either p120-catenin or delta-catenin correlates with increased dendritic length and branching, whereas their respective depletion decreases dendritic length and branching. While increasing ARVCF-catenin expression also increases dendritic length and branching, decreasing expression has no grossly observable morphological effect. Finally, increasing p0071-catenin expression increases dendritic branching, but not length, while decreasing expression decreases dendritic length and branching. These distinct localization patterns and morphological effects during neuron development suggest that these catenins have both shared and distinct roles in the context of dendrite morphogenesis.

PURPOSE: To present one way of performing onlay preputial flap for hypospadias. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This procedure was performed following the methodology used in one hypospadias expert center to correct hypospadias in boys who are not elective for Koff procedure and in whom Koyanagi procedure is not needed. Operative details were described, and post-operative management were given as example. RESULTS: Long-term results of this technique showed a 10% complication rate (dehiscence, strictures or urethral fistulas) 2 years after surgery. CONCLUSIONS: This video is a step by step description of the onlay preputial flap technique giving the general methodology and also the details resulting from years of practice in one hypospadias expert center.
