RESUMO

The concurrent role of morphodynamics and estuarine gradients in shaping population patterns in sandy beach macrofauna has not been adequately assessed. Here, we analyze the effects of beach morphodynamics, salinity, sea surface temperature, and chlorophyll-a (chl-a) on life-history traits of the wedge clam Donax hanleyanus in four sandy beaches located along the estuarine gradient generated by the Río de la Plata (RdlP, Argentina) over a 13-month period. A general linear model showed that chl-a and salinity were positively correlated with the abundance of D. hanleyanus, whereas between-beach differences in individual size, population structure, and growth performance were mainly explained by salinity fluctuations. These results indicate that the estuarine gradient of the RdlP plays a critical role in shaping life-history traits, population structure, and abundance of D. hanleyanus at local to regional scales, overriding the effects of local characteristics of the habitat. The study highlights the importance of conducting multi-scale studies that integrate environmental factors to elucidate the main physical drivers of population patterns in sandy beach ecosystems.

The Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) is a primary mechanism driving oceanic heat redistribution on Earth, thereby affecting Earth's climate and weather. However, the full-depth structure and variability of the MOC are still poorly understood, particularly in the South Atlantic. This study presents unique multiyear records of the oceanic volume transport of both the upper (<~3100 meters) and abyssal (>~3100 meters) overturning cells based on daily moored measurements in the South Atlantic at 34.5°S. The vertical structure of the time-mean flows is consistent with the limited historical observations. Both the upper and abyssal cells exhibit a high degree of variability relative to the temporal means at time scales, ranging from a few days to a few weeks. Observed variations in the abyssal flow appear to be largely independent of the flow in the overlying upper cell. No meaningful trends are detected in either cell.

We study the annual patterns and linear trend of satellite sea level anomaly (SLA) over the southwest South Atlantic continental shelf (SWACS) between 54ºS and 36ºS. Results show that south of 42°S the thermal steric effect explains nearly 100% of the annual amplitude of the SLA, while north of 42°S it explains less than 60%. This difference is due to the halosteric contribution. The annual wind variability plays a minor role over the whole continental shelf. The temporal linear trend in SLA ranges between 1 and 5 mm/yr (95% confidence level). The largest linear trends are found north of 39°S, at 42°S and at 50°S. We propose that in the northern region the large positive linear trends are associated with local changes in the density field caused by advective effects in response to a southward displacement of the South Atlantic High. The causes of the relative large SLA trends in two southern coastal regions are discussed as a function meridional wind stress and river discharge. Finally, we combined the annual cycle of SLA with the mean dynamic topography to estimate the absolute geostrophic velocities. This approach provides the first comprehensive description of the seasonal component of SWACS circulation based on satellite observations. The general circulation of the SWACS is northeastward with stronger/weaker geostrophic currents in austral summer/winter. At all latitudes, geostrophic velocities are larger (up to 20 cm/s) close to the shelf-break and decrease toward the coast. This spatio-temporal pattern is more intense north of 45°S.

The goal of this paper is to test the attenuation capability of seven models of protective eyewear used in routine clinical practice. Scattered radiation from a standard patient was simulated by using a water tank located over the treatment couch of a GE Innova 3100 x-ray angiography system. Seven protective eyewear models were tested using an anthropomorphic phantom mimicking the first operator. At each test, 4 thermoluminiscent dosimeters were placed on the phantom (respectively in front of the protective eyewear, under the eyewear, on the left earpiece and at chest level) in order to have an eyewear-independent reference. A test session without glasses was also acquired. Each model was tested with standard posterior-anterior (PA) projections and the two most common protective eyewear were tested using LAO90° and LAO45°CRA30° projections. A worst-case scenario was created to be sure of having an upper limit for the assessment of eyewear attenuation in routine clinical practice. In PA projections, the absolute attenuation value ranged between 71% and 81%, while relative attenuation between dose measured at eye lens and that measured at eyewear earpiece ranged from 67% to 85%. The slightly wider range was probably due to scatter radiation variability; anyway, differences are still included in the variable uncertainty of experimental measurements. It is worth noting that #3 eyewear model (the one without lateral protection) allows an attenuation similar to that of #5 eyewear model (with 0.5 mm lead lateral protection) in LAO90° and LAO45°CRA30° projections. Despite the experimental limitations, a description of the radiation properties of protective eyewear concerning radiation attenuation can be useful to rely on protection devices which can be used in routine clinical practice.

The aim of this preliminary, observational study was to evaluate the value of ImmuKnow (IK), a new tool to measure the net state of immunefunction among renal transplant recipients, in correlation with clinical and laboratory data among unselected renal transplant recipients. Forty-nine recipients of mean age of 51 years were enrolled and followed for 1 year after transplantation. All subjects received the same immunosuppressive strategy with basiliximab induction and tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil and steroid maintenance therapy. Samples for IK were collected before transplantation as well as at 7, 14, 21 and 42 days and after 3, 6, and 12 months. There were 54 samples with IK <225 ng/mL, 201 samples with normal IK values, and 135 samples with >525 ng/mL. We divided recipients into 3 groups with respect to their basal IK values: Group 1 (Gr1; IK <225 ng/mL); Group 2 (Gr2; normal values of IK between 226 and 524 ng/mL); and Group 3 (Gr3; IK >525 ng/mL). At 1 year, we observed a significant difference among IK values at the start and the end of the study: Gr1 vs Gr2, P<.0001; Gr2 vs Gr3, P<.06 and Gr 1 vs Gr 3, P<.01). We observed reduced IK values to predict an increased risk of infection, particularly with cytomegalovirus (CMV) replication while higher IK value did not correlate with an increased risk of acute rejection episodes. Reduction of serum creatine levels occurred within 1 year in all groups (P<.005), but there was a significant difference between Gr 2 versus Grs 1 and 3 (P<.0001 and P<.0005, respectively). There findings suggested that more stable IK values were associated with clinical quiescence and laboratory stability. In conclusion, our preliminary analysis showed a beneficial capacity of this assay to represent the global depression of the immune system. We noted that reduced IK values, as a sign of excessive immunosuppressive therapy, were associated with an increased risk of infection. We did not confirm the predictive value of higher IK values for an increased risk of an acute rejection episode.
