The authors summarize the results of investigations of specific anatomical features of paranasal sinuses in more than 12,000 subjects. The patients with suspected cerebral pathology and lesions in the paranasal sinuses were examined using computed tomography. Structural variants of ethmoid bone and ethmoidal labyrinth, nasal septum, maxillary, frontal, and sphenoidal sinuses are described. The morphometric analysis revealed the zonal relationship between different structures of nasal mucosa and the new variants of regulatory structures in the cavernous sinus vessels.

This paper summarizes the experience with the treatment of 275 patients presenting with inflammatory diseases and traumatic lesions of the frontal sinus. Based on the results of the present study, recommendations have been developed designed to optimize surgical interventions for the enhancement of treatment efficiency and the prevention of relapses.

In small anastomoses of the paranasal sinuses blocking in inflammation we observe acute pyo-exudative inflammation; in large anastomoses--chronic productive form with development of the cysts and polyps. By the authors' experience, 8-10% of the population have no maxillary anastomosis in the crescentic fissure. It locates in the posterior part of its medial wall.

The paper presents a detailed description of blood circulation in the mucosa of the turbinated bones (TB), cavernous plexuses of the conchae (CPC). The operation of submucous vasotomy is suggested basing on morphological features of CPC blood supply. The technique of the procedure is described. The results of this sparing surgery are available for 530 patients with hypertrophic and basomotor rhinitis.

The 5-year experience gained in the ENT hospital of the Kursk Medical Institute and the ENT department of the Central Hospital of the USSR Ministry of Health proved effective the use of polymer-based drugs in chemotherapy of acute and chronic maxillary sinusitis. The drugs carried by polymers were introduced into the maxillary sinus by puncture or drainage. As a rule, these are antibiotics or the latter in combination with hormones and enzymes. Drugs with addition of polymers can be produced in any pharmacy.

Cytological and histochemical methods were used in order to establish that the intercalated cells of the ciliated epithelium of the rabbit's maxillary sinus mucosa performed gland function giving secretion formed in the shape of granules and represented by neutral mucopolysaccharides. Analysis of the morphology of intercalated cells, the amount of secretion in them, the shape and disposition of the Golgi apparatus and the nucleus allowed establishing 4 successive phases in their secretory cycle: the phase of synthesis, accumulation, aquosity and sectering. Under normal conditions of life the secretory activity of intercalated cells was asynchronous. In experiments with synchronization of the secretory activity by administration of pilocarpine it was established that the duration of the intercalated cells secretory cycle was 16-18 hours. Active participation of alkali phosphatase in the synthesis of secretion in the ciliated epithelium was noted.
