RESUMO

Background: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a multifactorial medical disorder often neglected in clinical practice between elderly men, defined as the inability to achieve and/or maintain a penile erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse and a common clinical entity among men and associated with impaired quality of life and cardiovascular diseases in elderly men. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association between ED and clinical, demographic and behavioral parameters in elderly men. Methods: A total of 2436 males aged 60 years and over who participated in the health screening between January 2008 and December 2018 were included in this study. Laboratory exams, clinical and behavior profiles were analyzed. Logistic regression models were used. Results: Men with ED were older (65.87±5.49 vs. 63.85±4.05 years old. p<0.001), higher prevalence of physical inactivity (23.8 vs. 19%, p = 0.039) and had a higher body mass index (BMI; 28.36±4.06 vs. 27.72±3.89 kg/m2. p<0.001) than men without ED. The multivariate model shown that hypertension (p = 0.001), diabetes mellitus (p<0.001), lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), depressive symptoms (p<0.001) and age (p<0.001), were strongly associated with ED. Conclusion: The main risk factors associated with ED in elderly men were hypertension, diabetes mellitus, LUTS, depressive symptoms and age.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: A comparative analysis of the association between sedentary behavior versus physical activity levels and tumor staging in women with breast cancer. METHODS: The present research adopted a cross-sectional study design to recruit a total of 55 adult and elderly women newly diagnosed with breast cancer for data collection and analysis. Inclusion criteria involved patients in procession of a formal approval for participation in the study by the treating physician and those not hitherto subjected to the first cycle of chemotherapy. RESULTS: Physical activity levels did not influence the pathological stage of breast cancer (p=0.26) or histological tumor grade (p=0.07) in the analyzed subjects. However, there was a significant association between physical activity levels and responsiveness to hormones (epidermal growth factor receptor (HER2), p<0.05) in the analyzed subjects. Significant difference was detected in the histological tumor grade in relation to the mean time spent sitting during the weekend (p<0.05). However, sedentary behavior had no influence on the tumor stage (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Physical activity levels did not influence the tumor stage and histological tumor grade. Sedentary behavior had a significant influence on the histological tumor grade.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Erectile dysfunction, defined as the inability to achieve and/or maintain a penile erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse is associated with impaired quality of life and cardiovascular diseases in men older than 40 years. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between erectile dysfunction and physical activity levels in a large cohort of men. METHODS: Data from 20,789 males aged 40 years and over who participated in the check-up screening between January of 2008 and December of 2018 were included in this study. In this sample, data about erectile dysfunction, physical activity levels, clinical profile and laboratory exams were obtained. Logistic regression models were performed. RESULTS: Individuals with erectile dysfunction were older (49.1 ±6.9 vs. 54.8±8.8 years old, p<0.001), had a higher body mass index (27.6 ±3.9 vs. 28.5 ± 4.3 kg/m2, p<0,001), and presented with a higher prevalence of physical inactivity (25 vs. 19%, p<0.001) than individuals without erectile dysfunction. The multivariate model revealed that age (p<0.001), hypertension (p = 0.001), diabetes mellitus (p<0.001), high body mass index (p<0.001), lower urinary tract symptoms and depressive symptoms (p<0.001) were independent risk factors for erectile dysfunction. Low or high physical activity levels (OR = 0.77; CI95%: 0.68-0.87, p<0.001 and OR = 0.85; CI95%: 0.72-0.99, p = 0.04 respectively) were protective factors against erectile dysfunction. CONCLUSION: Low and high physical activity levels were associated with more than 20% reduction in the risk of erectile dysfunction in men aged 40 years or older.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A central challenge of DNA gut content analysis is to identify prey in a highly degraded DNA community. In this study, we evaluated prey detection using metabarcoding and a method of mapping unassembled shotgun reads (Lazaro). RESULTS: In a mock prey community, metabarcoding did not detect any prey, probably owing to primer choice and/or preferential predator DNA amplification, while Lazaro detected prey with accuracy 43-71%. Gut content analysis of field-collected arthropod epigeal predators (3 ants, 1 dermapteran, and 1 carabid) from agricultural habitats in Brazil (27 samples, 46-273 individuals per sample) revealed that 64% of the prey species detections by either method were not confirmed by melting curve analysis and 87% of the true prey were detected in common. We hypothesized that Lazaro would detect fewer true- and false-positive and more false-negative prey with greater taxonomic resolution than metabarcoding but found that the methods were similar in sensitivity, specificity, false discovery rate, false omission rate, and accuracy. There was a positive correlation between the relative prey DNA concentration in the samples and the number of prey reads detected by Lazaro, while this was inconsistent for metabarcoding. CONCLUSIONS: Metabarcoding and Lazaro had similar, but partially complementary, detection of prey in arthropod predator guts. However, while Lazaro was almost 2× more expensive, the number of reads was related to the amount of prey DNA, suggesting that Lazaro may provide quantitative prey information while metabarcoding did not.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sitting time, screen time and low physical activity (PA) levels have been associated with several diseases and all-cause mortality. PA is related to better sleep quality and absence of daytime sleepiness, along with lower risks of obstructive syndrome apnea (OSA). However, studies on the relationship between sitting time, screen time and OSA are scarce in the literature. OBJECTIVE: To analyze associations between PA levels, sitting time, screen time and OSA among adults with suspected sleep disorder. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study conducted at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein. METHODS: Data were collected from 369 adults with suspected sleep disorders who visited the hospital's neurophysiology clinic between August 2015 and January 2017. RESULTS: Correlations between hypopnea and PA indicators were demonstrated for total sitting time (0.123; P = 0.019) and total screen time (0.108; P = 0.038). There was also a correlation between latency for rapid-eye-movement sleep (REM_LAT) and total sitting time (0.103; P = 0.047) and a negative correlation between mean oxyhemoglobin saturation (SaO_Avg) and total PA time (-0.103; P = 0.048). There were no associations between PA parameters and apnea-hypopnea index. After adjusting for confounding factors (body mass index, age and gender), sitting time and screen time were not associated with OSA. CONCLUSION: After adjusting for anthropometric and clinical factors, excessive sitting time or screen time was not associated with OSA in adults suspected of sleep disorders. Age, gender, hypertension, body mass index and waist circumference were associated with OSA.

RESUMO

Background: The movement of the arm relative to the trunk results from 3-dimensional (3D) coordinated movements of the glenohumeral (GH) and scapulothoracic (ST) joints and dictates the scapulohumeral rhythm (SHR). Alterations in SHR increase joint overload and may lead to low functional scores, pain, and failures in patients undergoing reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RSA). The goal of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine 3D SHR kinematics after RSA and compare it to that of asymptomatic shoulders. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis of articles in English were performed using PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and SciELO. Additional studies were identified by searching bibliographies. Search terms included "Reverse shoulder arthroplasty", "3D", and "scapula". It was selected cross-sectional studies that reported SHR with 3D motion analysis systems in patients who underwent RSA and asymptomatic controls. Two authors independently performed the extraction of articles using predefined data fields, including study quality indicators. Results: Data from four studies were included in quantitative analysis, totaling 48 shoulders with RSA and 63 asymptomatic shoulders. Pooled analyses were based on random-effects model (DerSimonian-Laird). A statistically smaller SHR ratio was observed in the RSA group than that in the control group (P < .00001), meaning a greater contribution of ST joint in relation to GH joint for arm elevation. The standardized mean difference was -1.16 (95% confidence interval: -1.64, -0.67). A sensitivity analysis with three more studies that had imputed data on control group did not change the direction of the effect. The standardized mean difference on sensitivity analysis was -0.60 (P = .03; 95% confidence interval: -1.13, -0.06). It was detected as "not important heterogeneity" within the comparison (I2: 22%). Chi-square was not statistically significant (Chi2: 3.85), and I2 was 22%. Tau2 was not zero (Tau2: 0.05). Sensitivity analysis showed an I2 of 74%, which might represent substantial heterogeneity, Chi-square was not statistically significant (Chi2: 23.01), and Tau2 was not zero (Tau2: 0.37). Conclusion: This study found that RSA shoulders have an increased contribution of ST joint during arm elevation, compared with asymptomatic shoulders. More movement in ST joint in proportion to GH joint increases GH joint contact forces, which could lead to component loosening or other complications. Further studies should address the clinical implications of this kinematic finding.

RESUMO

Pest behavior studies are important to inform the periods when the pest is more exposed to pesticide. This study aimed to evaluate the movement and feeding of Helicoverpa armigera larvae in the first three instars during the reproductive phase of cotton. First, larval behavior was evaluated with a completely randomized design in a 3 × 5 factorial design with eight replications. The treatments were the instars versus behaviors (crawling, resting, waving, eating and dropping-off). In addition, another 3 × 6 factorial design with eight replications was performed to evaluate the plant region most preferred by the caterpillars. The treatments were the instars versus six parts of the plant (abaxial surface, adaxial surface, on floral bud, internal surface of bract, petiole, and terminal growth). Then, the period of the day when caterpillars are more active was also evaluated by a 3 × 2 factorial essay. The treatments were the instars versus periods of the day. Eating and resting are the most frequent behaviors for all instars. The plant regions preferred by the caterpillars for crawling are on the floral bud and the adaxial face of the leaf. There is no preferred period of the day for eating, resting, waving or dropping-off. Caterpillars (until the third instar) prefer to walk in the morning and other behaviors can occur at any period. Therefore, sprays should preferably occur in the morning, and the insecticide drops/spray should reach the flower buds and the adaxial surface of the leaves to contaminate the larvae.

RESUMO

The efficacy of the fungus Metarhizium rileyi (Farlow) Kepler, S. A. Rehner & Humber (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) against the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and the impact on the community of epigeans predators as well as the natural occurrence of native fungal strains were evaluated after sequential sprays in maize. In the first season, the infestation was lower than 0.2 larvae per plant throughout the three fungal sprays and no significant difference was observed in the number of infected larvae among treatments. In the second season, insect population reached an average of 0.8 larvae per plant between the second and third sprays and the number of larvae succumbed by M. rileyi was higher in fungal-treated plots in the following weeks. Molecular characterization of the collected isolates on mummified larvae revealed the introduction of a new isolate did not eliminate the native strain on the fungal-treated plots. In both seasons, the diversity and abundance of predator species in the plots were not affected by any of the treatments. We showed that applications of selected strains of M. rileyi early in the season have no significant impact on the occurrence of natural enemies in maize.

RESUMO

Exergames have already been used as therapeutic tools to enhance both physical and cognitive functions in older adults. AIM: To evaluate the effects of a Kinect-based physical activity program on the quality of life, depression, functional fitness and body composition in institutionalized older adults. METHODS: A total of 50 older adults aged >60 years were selected and randomized to a control and video game group. Body composition was determined by means of anthropometric measurements. Quality of life was assessed using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire, and depression was classified using the Beck Depression inventory. Functional fitness was assessed using the Arm Curl, Chair Stand, 8-foot up-and-go, sit and reach, and the aerobic endurance test. RESULTS: After 12 weeks of protocol, we observed a significant improvement in all functional fitness parameters. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that a Kinect-based physical activity program seems to positively impact the three domains related to quality of life and directly associated with age (physical, social and psychological domains), and to promote a more active lifestyle in institutions housing older individuals. RESUMO

The soybean looper (Chrysodeixis includens) is an important defoliation pest in crops such as soybean and cotton in Brazil. Its main control tactic is chemical insecticides. Considering the importance of chemical control for this pest, monitoring the susceptibility of C. includens populations is strategic for an efficient Insect Resistance Management. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the susceptibility levels of C. includens populations in the state of Mato Grosso - Brazil to lufenuron and spinosad. Seven populations were collected in soybean fields around the state. For the bioassays, early L3 larvae were exposed to insecticides using the diet-overlay method. Although the compounds have distinct modes of action, Tangará da Serra population had the highest resistance ratios for lufenuron (11.62) and spinosad (7.84), compared to laboratory population (susceptibility reference). Even with low resistance levels, it is necessary to maintain regional monitoring of C. includens susceptibility to the evaluated insecticides, as well as to extend the range of molecules monitored.(AU)

RESUMO

Aims: The present study aimed to assess the effect of a 24-week intervention on the physical activity level among adults at risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). Methods: It was included 129 individuals of both sexes who underwent the Preventive Health Check-up at the Albert Einstein Israelita Hospital between January and August 2010 and who were at high and very high risk of developing DM2. The risk of developing DM2 was assessed according to the FINDRISC criteria. All participants were evaluated by the International Physical Activity Questioner (IPAQ). Subjects were followed-up for 24 weeks by a physical education professional through emails during a 6 month period. The IPAQ was sent by email after 3 and 6 months of follow-up. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square test with p<0.05 and the Yule Coefficient test. Results: At baseline of the follow-up period, 80.3% of individuals failed to comply with the recommended weekly physical activity. In the end, motivational intervention by e-mail encouraged 74.2% of individuals to comply with the weekly-recommended physical activity and only 1.5% were classified as sedentary. Conclusion: Therefore, the follow-up protocol conducted by periodic and personalized e-mails proved to be effective in promoting physical activity among people at risk of developing metabolic diseases.(AU)

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare acute and sub-acute responses in hormonal profile and metabolic parameters in elderly people who participated in two methods of strength training (ST) with equalized loads. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A total of 12 elder individuals (65 ± 3 years) were randomly assigned to two training methods: constant intensity (CI, 3 sets of 10 repetitions with 75% of 1RM) and variable intensity (VI, 1st set: 12 repetitions at 67% of 1RM > 2nd set: 10 repetitions at 75% of 1RM and 3rd set: 8 repetitions at 80% of 1RM). Both methods included the following exercises: leg press, knee extension, and squat with 1 min rest intervals between sets. Free speed of execution and maximum range of movement were encouraged throughout each set for both protocols. Blood samples were analyzed included glucose, testosterone (T), cortisol (C), T/C rate, growth hormone (GH), and lactate at 2 and 24 h post intervention. RESULTS: There were no observed differences in glucose, testosterone, GH, and lactate concentrations both at 2 and 24 h after the execution of the two training methods. However, significant increases in the levels of T/C rate and decrease on cortisol were observed immediately post exercise for both protocols. CONCLUSIONS: Although no significant differences were observed between the two interventions in relation to the hormonal and metabolic parameters analyzed, both training methods promoted a favorable response, with a slight superiority noted for the CI method relative to the hormonal profile.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff disease (RCD) is a complex process influenced by a multitude of factors, and a number of gene pathways are altered in rotator cuff tears. Polymorphisms in these genes can lead to an extended tendon degeneration process, which explains why subsets of patients are more susceptible to RCD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-three single-nucleotide polymorphisms within 6 genes involved in repair and degenerative processes (DEFB1, DENND2C, ESRRB, FGF3, FGF10, and FGFR1) were investigated in 410 patients, 203 with a diagnosis of RCD and 207 presenting with absence of RCD. Exclusion criteria were patients older than 60 years and younger than 45 years with a history of trauma, rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune syndrome, pregnancy, and use of corticosteroids. Genomic DNA was obtained from saliva samples. Genetic markers were genotyped with TaqMan real-time polymerase chain reaction. The χ(2) test compared genotypes and haplotype differences between groups. Multivariate logistic regression analyzed the significance of many covariates and the incidence of RCD. RESULTS: Statistical analysis revealed female sex (P = .001; odds ratio, 2.07 [1.30-3.30]) and being white (P = .002; odds ratio, 1.88 [1.21-2.90]) to be risk factors for RCD development. A significant association of haplotypes CCTTCCAG in ESRRB (P = .05), CGACG in FGF3 (P = .01), CC in DEFB1 (P = .03), and FGFR1 rs13317 (P = .02) with RCD could be observed. Also, association between FGF10 rs11750845 (P = .03) and rs1011814 (P = .01) was observed after adjustment by ethnic group and sex. CONCLUSIONS: Our work clearly supports the role of DEFB1, ESRRB, FGF3, FGF10, and FGFR1 genes in RCD. Identification of these variants can clarify causal pathways and provide a clue for therapeutic targets.

The nanotechnology, through encapsulation of active ingredients, has showed an important way to avoid problems with quickly degradation of the pesticide molecules. Thus, neem (Azadirachta indica) oil nanoformulations containing ?-ciclodextrin and poli-?-caprolactone (PCL) were tested as to their control efficiency against eggs and nymphs of Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biotype B reared in soybean. The Lethal Concentration (LC50) was estimated using a commercial neem oil (Organic Neem®) on first-instar nymphs to establish the adequate volume of the nanoformulations per treatment. After that, they were sprayed on eggs and first-instar nymphs in laboratory and greenhouse and on third-instar nymphs in greenhouse. The commercial neem oil and distilled water were used as controls. Egg viability was not affected by any treatment. Among six nanoformulations, only one was efficient against the first-instar nymphs in laboratory conditions. However, its effective period was not increased as expected. In greenhouse, first-instar nymphs were more affected by two nanoformulations which were significantly different of the commercial neem oil - the most effective one. No mortality differences among the formulations in the third-instar test were observed. The nanoformulations were less efficient to control the B. tabaci biotype B nymphs than the commercial neem oil.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of cabbage genotypes (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala DC.) on growth of Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). The genotypes evaluated were: Manteiga of Ribeirão Pires I-2620, Roxa I919, Manteiga of São José, Manteiga of Monte Alegre, Pires 2 of Campinas, Couve Comum, Couve of Arthur Nogueira 2, Couve of Arthur Nogueira 1. Neonate larvae were reared in 8 cm leaf discs of each genotype. The parameters evaluated were: period and viability of the larval and pupal stages, sex ratio, longevity and fecundity of adults. Parametric and Cluster analyses were used for data analysis. Overall, it was observed a developmental delay in the P. xylostella cicle, larger pupal, higher viability and fecundity during the second generation. Couve of Arthur Nogueira 2 was less favorable to the development of P. xylostella in the two generations, and Couve Comum was not an appropriate host for the insect in the second generation. Manteiga of Ribeirão Pires I-2620 was the most susceptible in both generations belonging to the same cluster with Pires 2 of Campinas and Manteiga of São José in the second generation.
