(AU)

RESUMO

Impaired motion perception in schizophrenia has been associated with deficits in social-cognitive processes and with reduced activation of visual sensory regions, including the middle temporal area (MT+) and posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS). These findings are consistent with the recent proposal of the existence of a specific 'third visual pathway' specialized for social perception in which motion is a fundamental component. The third visual pathway transmits visual information from early sensory visual processing areas to the STS, with MT+ acting as a critical intermediary. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate functioning of this pathway during processing of naturalistic videos with explicit (real) motion and static images with implied motion cues. These measures were related to face emotion recognition and motion-perception, as measured behaviorally. Participants were 28 individuals with schizophrenia (Sz) and 20 neurotypical controls. Compared to controls, individuals with Sz showed reduced activation of third visual pathway regions (MT+, pSTS) in response to both real- and implied-motion stimuli. Dysfunction of early visual cortex and pulvinar were also associated with aberrant real-motion processing. Implied-motion stimuli additionally engaged a wide network of brain areas including parietal, motor and frontal nodes of the human mirror neuron system. The findings support concepts of MT+ as a mediator between visual sensory areas and higher-order brain and argue for greater focus on MT+ contributions to social-cognitive processing, in addition to its well-documented role in visual motion processing.

RESUMO

Remote sensing data and numerical simulation are important tools to rebuild any oil spill accident letting to identify its source and trajectory. Through these tools was identified an oil spill that affected Oaxacan coast in October 2022. The SAR images were processed with a standard method included in SNAP software, and the numerical simulation was made using Lagrangian transport model included in GNOME software. With the combining of these tools was possible to discriminate the look-alikes from true oil slicks; which are the main issue when satellite images are used. Obtained results showed that 4.3m3 of crude oil were released into the ocean from a punctual point of oil pollution. This oil spill was classified such as a small oil spill. The marine currents and weathering processes were the main drivers that controlled the crude oil displacement and its dispersion. It was estimated in GNOME that 1.6 m3 of crude oil was floating on the sea (37.2 %), 2.4 m3 was evaporated into the atmosphere (55.8 %) and 0.3 m3 reached the coast of Oaxaca (7 %). This event affected 82 km of coastline, but the most important touristic areas as well as turtle nesting zones were not affected by this small crude oil spill. Results indicated that the marine-gas-pump number 3 in Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, is a punctual point of oil pollution in the Southern Mexican Pacific Ocean. Further work is needed to assess the economic and ecological damage to Oaxacan coast caused by this small oil spill.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of liver abnormalities in Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) has gained significant recognition. Identifying key factors at the clinical and molecular level can help to detect high-risk patients for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in PsA. OBJECTIVES: to investigate the influence of PsA and cumulative doses of methotrexate on liver function through comprehensive in vivo and in vitro investigations. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving 387 subjects was conducted, 200 patients with PsA, 87 NAFLD-non-PsA patients, and 100 healthy donors (HDs), age and sex-matched. Additionally, a retrospective longitudinal study was carried out, including 83 PsA patients since initiation with methotrexate. Detailed clinical, and laboratory parameters along with liver disease risk were analyzed. In vitro, experiments with hepatocyte cell line (HEPG2) were conducted. RESULTS: PsA patients present increased liver disease risk associated with the presence of cardiometabolic comorbidities, inflammatory markers, onychopathy, and psoriasis. The treatment with PsA serum on hepatocytes encompassed inflammatory, fibrotic, cell stress, and apoptotic processes. At the molecular level, methotrexate impacts liver biology, although the cumulative doses did not affect those alterations, causing any potential damage to liver function at the clinical level. Finally, anti-PDE-4 or anti-JAK decreased the inflammatory profile induced by PsA serum on hepatocytes. CONCLUSION: 1)This study identifies the complex link between liver disease risk, comorbidities, and disease-specific features in PsA patients. 2)Methotrexate dose in PsA patients had no significant effect on liver parameters, confirmed by hepatocyte in vitro studies. 3)Anti-PDE-4 and anti-JAK therapies show promise in reducing PsA serum-induced hepatocyte activation, potentially aiding liver complication management.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to explore the impact of arthritis on liver function using different approaches in vivo and in vitro. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed on 330 non-obese/non-T2DM subjects: 180 RA patients, 50 NAFLD non-RA patients, and 100 healthy donors (HDs). A longitudinal study was conducted on 50 RA patients treated with methotrexate for six months. Clinical and laboratory parameters and markers of liver disease were collected. Mechanistic studies were carried out in both the CIA mouse model and hepatocytes treated with anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPAs). RESULTS: RA patients have an increased risk of suffering from liver disease independent of obesity or T2DM. This risk was associated with factors such as insulin resistance, autoantibodies, inflammation, and component C3. Methotrexate treatment for six months was associated with liver abnormalities in those newly-diagnosed patients having CV risk factors. ACPAs induced a defective hepatocyte function, promoting IR and inflammation. The induction of arthritis in mice caused the infiltration of immune cells in the liver and increased inflammatory, apoptotic, and fibrotic processes. CONCLUSION: RA patients may experience mild to moderate liver inflammation due to the infiltration of T, B cells, and macrophages, and the action of ACPAs. This is independent of obesity or diabetes and linked to systemic inflammation, and disease activity levels. The negative effects of methotrexate on liver function could be restricted to the concomitant presence of cardiovascular risk factors.

RESUMO

Background and Hypothesis: Motion processing deficits in schizophrenia have been linked to impairments in higher-order social-cognitive processes. The neural underpinnings are not fully understood but it has been hypothesized that middle temporal area (MT+) may serve as a bridge between purely sensory and more cognitive proceseses. We investigated the interrelationship between MT+ sensory processing deficits and impairments in higher-order processing using naturalistic videos with explicit motion and static images with implied-motion cues. Study Design: Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to evaluate cortical and subcortical brain regions associated with real- and implied-motion processing in 28 individuals with schizophrenia and 20 neurotypical controls. These measures were related to face emotion recognition and motion-perception deficits, as measured behaviorally. Study Results: Activation of MT+ was abnormal in schizophrenia during both real- and implied-motion processing. Dysfunction of early visual cortex and pulvinar were also associated with impaired real-motion processing. During implied-motion-perception, MT+ participated in a wider network involving sensorimotor and prefrontal nodes of the human mirror neuron system, known to play a role in social-cognitive processes. Perception of both real- and implied-motion engaged the posterior superior temporal sulcus, a key node of the social brain network. Conclusions: The findings support concepts of MT+ as a bridge between visual sensory areas and higher-order brain regions especially in relationship to face emotion recognition and social cognition. Our data argue for greater focus on MT+ contributions to social-cognitive processing, in addition to its well-documented role in visual motion processing.

RESUMO

The influence of manganese modification on the spectroscopic features of manganese-doped CeO2 systems synthesized by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal route and their correlation with the presence of O defective structures were verified, focusing on their interaction with poisonous atmospheres. Raman and electron paramagnetic resonance studies confirmed the presence of defective clusters formed by dipoles and/or quadrupoles. The number of paramagnetic species was found to be inversely proportional to the doping concentration, resulting in an increase in the Mn2+ signal, likely due to the reduction of Mn3+ species after the interaction with CO. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data showed the pure system with 33% of its cerium species in the Ce3+ configuration, with an abrupt decrease to 19%, after the first modification with Mn, suggesting that 14% of the Ce3+ species are donating one electron to the Mn2+ ions, thus becoming nonparamagnetic Ce4+ species. On the contrary, 58% of the manganese species remain in the Mn2+ configuration with five unpaired electrons, corroborating the paramagnetic feature of the samples seen in the electron paramagnetic resonance study.

RESUMO

Boxing and other combat sports are associated with repetitive head trauma related to damage to the central nervous system. This work aimed to model the effect of a punch to the forehead given by a heavyweight boxer. Methodology: the Finite Element Method (FEM) was used. The research was based on simulating the effects of a dynamic impact and thus predicting, locating, and quantifying changes in the brain due to the blow. This simulation was validated by comparing medical research on brain injuries caused by impacts to the head. Results: The mathematical predictions showed significant brain effects: figures that exceed 100% risk. The MEF appears to be a practical, universal, inexpensive, and quick calculation tool, with important applications to detect evidence of brain trauma. (AU)

(AU)

RESUMO

Developing technological solutions that use yerba mate waste as precursors is key to reducing the environmental impact caused by the lack of treatment and its accumulation in landfills. Due to their physicochemical properties, these residues can be used to develop activated carbons. Activated carbon is a versatile material with a high surface area that can be used for energy storage. In this work, yerba mate residues were valued by producing chemically activated carbon to be used as electrode material in supercapacitors. Activated carbons were developed through chemical activation in two steps with KOH. Variables such as impregnation ratio and activation temperature are studied. The developed carbons were characterized by physicochemical and electrochemical techniques. They were found to have high surface areas, up to 1800 m2 g-1, with a hierarchical porous distribution. A maximum specific capacitance of 644 F g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, and power values of ca 32,000 W kg-1, at 33 A g-1 were found. All the synthesized carbons have excellent electrochemical properties and are suitable for use as active material in supercapacitors.

RESUMO

The Yabotí Biosphere Reserve (Prov. Misiones, Argentina) with 221,155 ha, represents one of the southernmost relicts of the Paranaense forest. Currently, a project is being developed in the area to inventory and describe the ferns and lycophytes. As a result of these studies, we identify a new species of Amauropelta, A. yabotiensis. Within this genus, it belongs to the group of species with uncinate hairs and presents a unique combination of diagnostic features, including the type of pubescence on the rhizome scales, the shape of the fronds and segments and type of venation. Here, we described and illustrated the species and we analyzed its taxonomic affinities and geographic distribution. Additionally, we provided a distribution map and a key to distinguish it from other Amauropelta species from Misiones province. With this new finding, we highlighted the importance of the Yabotí Reserve as a reservoir of biodiversity in the region.

RESUMO

This study reports the synthesis of hybrid nanostructures composed of cerium dioxide and microcrystalline cellulose prepared by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal route under distinct temperature and pH values. Their structural, morphological and spectroscopic behaviors were investigated by X-Rays Diffraction, Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscopy, High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy, and Fourier-Transform Infrared, Ultraviolet-Visible, Raman and Positron Annihilation Lifetime spectroscopies to evaluate the presence of structural defects and their correlation with the underlying mechanism regarding the biocide activity of the studied material. The samples showed mean crystallite sizes around 10 nm, characterizing the formation of quantum dots unevenly distributed along the cellulose surface with a certain agglomeration degree. The samples presented the characteristic Ce-O vibration close to 450 cm-1 and a second-order mode around 1050 cm-1, which is indicative of distribution of localized energetic levels originated from defective species, essential in the scavenging of reactive oxygen species. Positron spectroscopic studies showed first and second lifetime components ranging between 202-223 ps and 360-373 ps, respectively, revealing the presence of two distinct defective oxygen species, in addition to an increment in the concentration of Ce3+-oxygen vacancy associates as a function of temperature. Therefore, we have successfully synthesized hybrid nanoceria structures with potential multifunctional therapeutic properties to be further evaluated against the COVID-19.

RESUMO

Lipoic acid (LA, 6,8-dithiooctanoic acid) is a sulfur containing coenzyme essential for the activity of several key enzymes involved in oxidative and single carbon metabolism in most bacteria and eukaryotes. LA is synthetized by the concerted activity of the octanoyltransferase (LIP2, EC 2.3.1.181) and lipoyl synthase (LIP1, EC 2.8.1.8) enzymes. In plants, pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH), 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase or glycine decarboxylase are essential complexes that need to be lipoylated. These lipoylated enzymes and complexes are located in the mitochondria, while PDH is also present in plastids where it provides acetyl-CoA for de novo fatty acid biosynthesis. As such, lipoylation of PDH could regulate fatty acid synthesis in both these organelles. In the present work, the sunflower LIP1 and LIP2 genes (HaLIP1m and HaLIP2m) were isolated sequenced, cloned, and characterized, evaluating their putative mitochondrial location. The expression of these genes was studied in different tissues and protein docking was modeled. The genes were also expressed in Escherichia coli and Arabidopsis thaliana, where their impact on fatty acid and glycerolipid composition was assessed. Lipidomic studies in Arabidopsis revealed lipid remodeling in lines overexpressing these enzymes and the involvement of both sunflower proteins in the phenotypes observed is discussed in the light of the results obtained.

(AU)

Objetives: The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between muscle strength and bone fragility in patients with DM2. Methods: This observational cross-sectional study included 60 patients with DM2 (60% men and 40% postmenopausal women) ranging in age from 49 to 85 years. Demographic, anthropometric, clinical and biochemical variables were studied. Bone mineral density (BMD) in the lumbar spine (LS), femoral neck and total hip was determined using DXA (Hologic QDR 4500), and TBS values (TBS iNsight Software, version 3.0.2.0, Medimaps, Merignac, France). Hand grip (kg/cm2) was measured with a Jamar® manual hydraulic dynamometer (5030j1; Jackson, MI). To assess the level of mobility and the risk of falls, the Time Up and Go test was carried out. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS program (SPSS, inc, v 25.0). Results: The mean age of the patients was 66.3±8.3 years. The mean HbA1c was 7.7±1.1%, with inadequate glycemic control (HbA1c >7.5%) observed in 73.3% of the patients. 91.7% of the women and 77.8% of the men had low muscle strength. 41.7% of women and 25% of men presented a high risk of falls. Subjects with low hand grip strength and those with high risk of falls had significantly lower TBS values than those with greater hand grip strength (0.99±0.17 vs 1.12±0.15; p=0.03) and low risk of falls (0.94±0.13 vs 1.04±0.19; p=0.02). Patients with normal and partially degraded TBS had greater hand grip strength than subjects with degraded TBS (p=0.031). Hand grip strength was positively associated with TBS (p<0.05) regardless of age, waist circumference, 25OH vitamin D levels, and BMD in LS. There were no significant differences in hand grip strength as a function of BMD values. Conclusions: Our study shows that the reduction in muscle strength may be related to bone microarchitecture deterioration determined by TBS in patients with DM2. (AU)

RESUMO

Histone modifications are of paramount importance during plant development. Investigating chromatin remodeling in developing oilseeds sheds light on the molecular mechanisms controlling fatty acid metabolism and facilitates the identification of new functional regions in oil crop genomes. The present study characterizes the epigenetic modifications H3K4me3 in relationship with the expression of fatty acid-related genes and transcription factors in developing sunflower seeds. Two master transcriptional regulators identified in this analysis, VIV1 (homologous to Arabidopsis ABI3) and FUS3, cooperate in the regulation of WRINKLED 1, a transcriptional factor regulating glycolysis, and fatty acid synthesis in developing oilseeds.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Gamification consists of the use of games in non-playful contexts. It is widely employed in the motor rehabilitation of neurological diseases, but mainly in adult patients. The objective of this review was to describe the use of gamification in the rehabilitation of children and adolescents with neuromotor impairment. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of clinical trials published to date on the MEDLINE (PubMed), Scielo, SCOPUS, Dialnet, CINAHL, and PEDro databases, following the PRISMA protocol. The methodological quality of the studies identified was assessed using the PEDro scale. RESULTS: From a total of 469 studies, 10 clinical trials met the inclusion criteria. We analysed the gamification systems used as part of the rehabilitation treatment of different neuromotor conditions in children and adolescents. Cerebral palsy was the most frequently studied condition (6studies), followed by developmental coordination disorder (3), and neurological impairment of balance and coordination (1). CONCLUSION: The use of gamification in rehabilitation is helpful in the conventional treatment of neuromotor disorders in children and adolescents, with increased motivation and therapeutic adherence being the benefits with the greatest consensus among authors. While strength, balance, functional status, and coordination also appear to improve, future research should aim to determine an optimal dosage.

Abstract Introduction: The echocardiogram is the gold standard, in the diagnosis of the hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (hs-PDA) of the premature newborn (PNB). Type B natriuretic peptide (BNP) may be useful in the diagnosis and management of CAP-hs. Objective: To assess the utility of BNP as a marker of hemodynamic overload of the patent ductus arteriosus in newborns with gestational age < 32 weeks or weight < 1500 grams, and to identify the best cut-off point for BNP levels that would best predict a PDA with hemodynamic impact requiring pharmacological and/or surgical treatment. Methods: Retrospective, observational and descriptive study of PNB < 32 weeks gestation or weight < 1500 grams, in which echocardiogram and BNP determination was performed. Analysis of the global sample and by subgroups, depending on the hs-PDA status was performed. Results: A total of 29 patients were analyzed. A significant correlation was found between the PDA/weight ratio and BNP levels (Spearman: 0.71; 95% confidence interval: 0.45-0.87; p < 0.001). The best BNP cut-off point to predict CAP-hs was 486.5 pg/ml with a sensitivity of 81% and specificity of 92% (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The BNP cut-off point identified in the present study was correlated with the presence of CAP-hs.
