RESUMO

Lake ecosystems process and cycle organic substrates, thus serving as important bioreactors in the global carbon cycle. Climate change is predicted to increase extreme weather and precipitation events that can flush nutrients and organic matter from soils to streams and lakes. Here we report changes in stable isotopes (δ2H, δ13C, δ15N, or δ18O) of water, dissolved organic matter (DOM), seston, and zooplankton in a subalpine lake at short time resolution following an extreme precipitation event between early July to mid-August 2021. Water from excess precipitation and runoff remained in the lake epilimnion and coincided with increasing δ13C values of seston (-30 ‰ to -20 ‰), due to the input of carbonates and terrestrial organic matter. Particles settled into deeper lake layers after two days and contributed to the uncoupling of C and N cycling as the lake responded to this extreme precipitation event. Following the event, there was an increase in bulk δ13C values of zooplankton (from -35 ‰ to -32 ‰). Throughout this study, δ13C values of DOM remained stable throughout the water column (-29 ‰ to -28 ‰), while large isotopic fluctuations in DOM δ2H (-140 ‰ to -115 ‰) and δ18O (+9 ‰ to +15 ‰) values suggested DOM relocation and turnover. Integrating isotope hydrology, ecosystem ecology, and organic geochemistry offers an element-specific, detailed approach to investigating the impact of extreme precipitation events on freshwater ecosystems and particularly aquatic food webs.

The study of invasive species often focuses on regions of recent introduction rather than native habitats. Understanding an invasive species in its natural environment, however, can provide important insights regarding the long-term outcome of invasions. In this study we investigated the diet of the invasive spiny water flea, Bythotrephes longimanus, in two Austrian perialpine lakes, where it is native. The gut contents of wild-caught Bythotrephes individuals were estimated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction, targeting species-specific fragments of the barcoding region of the cytochrome c oxidase I gene of potential prey. The observed prey spectrum of Bythotrephes in the study lakes consisted primarily of Eudiaptomus gracilis and Diaphanosoma brachyurum. The Daphnia longispina complex, Leptodora kindtii and Mesocyclops leuckarti also contributed to the diet. Results indicate that Bythotrephes is a generalist feeder with a preference for epilimnetic prey.

Lakes in the Alps represent a considerable fraction of nutrient-poor lakes in Central Europe, with unique biodiversity and ecosystem properties. Although some individual lakes are well studied, less knowledge is available on large-scale patterns essential to general understanding of their functioning. Here, we aimed to describe crustacean zooplankton communities (Cladocera, Copepoda) and identify their environmental drivers in the pelagic zone of 54 oligotrophic lakes in the montane region of the Alps (400-1200 m) in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, covering a spatial scale of 650 km. Moreover, we aimed to provide data on the distribution and ecological requirements of the North American invader Bythotrephes longimanus in its Central European native range. Communities were mainly dominated by widespread species typical of lowland habitats, and only a few true specialists of oligotrophic alpine lakes were present. The most frequent taxa were the Daphnia longispina complex and Eudiaptomus gracilis, with 48 and 45 occurrences, respectively. Species richness decreased with altitude and increased with lake area. The main structuring factors of community composition were chlorophyll a concentration and depth, which drove an apparent separation of mesotrophic and oligotrophic communities. Bythotrephes had 13 occurrences, showing a preference for deep oligotrophic lakes. Its presence was not coupled with lower crustacean species richness, as was repeatedly observed in North America. Additionally, it frequently co-occurred with the other large predatory cladoceran, Leptodora kindtii. B. longimanus might be considered a truly montane species in Central Europe, given its absence in lowland and alpine lakes.

Mixotrophs combine photosynthesis with phagotrophy to cover their demands in energy and essential nutrients. This gives them a competitive advantage under oligotropihc conditions, where nutrients and bacteria concentrations are low. As the advantage for the mixotroph depends on light, the competition between mixo- and heterotrophic bacterivores should be regulated by light. To test this hypothesis, we incubated natural plankton from the ultra-oligotrophic Eastern Mediterranean in a set of mesocosms maintained at 4 light levels spanning a 10-fold light gradient. Picoplankton (heterotrophic bacteria (HB), pico-sized cyanobacteria, and small-sized flagellates) showed the fastest and most marked response to light, with pronounced predator-prey cycles, in the high-light treatments. Albeit cell specific activity of heterotrophic bacteria was constant across the light gradient, bacterial abundances exhibited an inverse relationship with light. This pattern was explained by light-induced top-down control of HB by bacterivorous phototrophic eukaryotes (PE), which was evidenced by a significant inverse relationship between HB net growth rate and PE abundances. Our results show that light mediates the impact of mixotrophic bacterivores. As mixo- and heterotrophs differ in the way they remineralize nutrients, these results have far-reaching implications for how nutrient cycling is affected by light.
