RESUMO
To lessen anxiety and promote the acquisition of basic skills and professional values in novice students, faculty incorporated special groups, called Care Groups, in the curriculum. Care Groups promote caring relationships. They help students to succeed by decreasing their apprehension and anxiety when demonstrating basic nursing skills in a laboratory environment. The authors discuss the structure and process of Care Groups and the faculty's role as mentor.

Managing a patient with subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus subsequent to ultraviolet exposure is challenging to health care professionals. A discussion of the disease process, a case study, and practical strategies for patient care will be presented.

To promote clinical scholarship, critical thinking, problem-solving ability, and effective writing and research skills in their students, faculty replaced their major care plan with a capstone scholarly paper. The authors discuss how faculty, who serve as mentors, guide their students through the development of the scholarly paper.

We examined the outcome of active duty psychiatric inpatients (N = 101) 2 years after admission. Most patients were young with minor diagnoses (adjustment disorders), yet only 20% were still on active duty 2 years later. This compared poorly with national retention rates for all lengths of time in service (p < 0.0001). Longer time in service and low severity of diagnosis predicted a better outcome. We discuss implications of these findings.
