RESUMO

The shelled pteropod Creseis acicula is a marine pelagic shellfish widely distributed from temperate to tropical seas around the world. From June to July 2020, a C. acicula bloom first happened in the Daya Bay, southern China, and its density reached the highest value (5600 ind. m-3) ever recorded around the world. However, few studies have investigated the responses of bacterial communities to the C. acicula bloom. In the present study, we examined the community profiles of three communities of bacteria including the free-living and particle-attached bacteria in the blooming and reference waters, and bacteria attached to the whole body and shell of C. acicula using a high-throughput sequencing method. The results indicated that the C. acicula bloom had a greater impact on particle-attached bacteria than free-living bacteria. Among the bloom-sensitive particle-attached bacteria, the predominant bacterial phyla were Pseudomonadota, Bacteroidota and Verrucomicrobiota in the blooming areas, whereas they were Actinomycetota and Planctomycetota in the reference areas. Specifically, fecal bacteria Haloferula and Halioglobus spp. were significantly enriched in the blooming waters and accumulated on C. acicula shells. Conversely, the significantly lower relative abundance of Nocardioides sp. in the blooming area and accumulated on the whole body of C. acicula indicated their attachment to particles consumed by C. acicula. Overall, our results suggested that the C. acicula bloom influenced marine bacteria, particularly particle-attached bacteria, by increasing (e.g. providing shells and feces) or decreasing (e.g. filter-feeding the suspended particles) the abundance of available substances.

Ocean microbiomes provide insightful details about the condition of water and the global impact of marine ecosystems. A fine-scale analysis of ocean microbes may shed light on the dynamics and function of the ocean microbiome community. In this study, we evaluated the changes in the community and function of marine bacteria, protists, and diatoms corresponding to different ocean depths using next-generation sequencing methods. We found that diatoms displayed a potential water-depth pattern in species richness (alpha diversity) and community composition (beta diversity). However, for bacteria and protists, there was no significant relationship between water depth and species richness. This may be related to the biological characteristics of diatoms. The photosynthesis of diatoms and their distribution may be associated with the fluctuating light regime in the underwater climate. Moreover, salinity displayed negative effects on the abundance of some diatom and bacterial groups, which indicates that salinity may be one of the factors restricting ocean microorganism diversity. In addition, compared to the global ocean microbiome composition, function, and antibiotic resistance genes, a water depth pattern due to the fine-scale region was not observed in this study. IMPORTANCE Fine-scale analysis of ocean microbes provides insights into the dynamics and functions of the ocean microbiome community. Here, using amplicon and metagenome sequencing methods, we found that diatoms in the northern South China Sea displayed a potential water-depth pattern in species richness and community composition, which may be related to their biological characteristics. The potential effects of the differences in geographic sites mainly occurred in the diatom and bacterial communities. Moreover, given the correlation between the environmental factors and relative abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), the study of ocean ARG distribution patterns should integrate the potential effects of environmental factors.

Microzooplanton play a crucial role in marine ecosystems, as they transfer matter and energy from pico- and nano-phytoplankton to mesozooplankton. In this study, we explored the seasonal variations of microzooplankton grazing derived from dilution experiments in a typical eutrophic coast of Southern China, as well as the abundance and biodiversity of its key group (ciliate), to further understand its function in the subtropical coastal food web associated with potential regulation factors. A total of 29 ciliate species belonging to 18 genera were identified, with the dominating species of Mesodinium rubrum, Strombidium globosaneum and Strombidium conicum. The spatial difference of ciliates abundance was attributed by the changes of temperature and salinity. Phytoplankton growth rate (µ) and microzooplankton grazing rate (m) ranged from 0.03 to 1.36 d-1 and 0.10 to 1.57 d-1, respectively, and both µ and m showed the highest values in summer and the lowest in winter. Moreover, microzooplankton grazing pressure on the phytoplankton standing stocks and potential primary production ranged from 10% to 79% and 58% to 471%, respectively. Our results indicated that temperature is the main environmental driving force for the seasonal changes of µ and m, and that the impacts of run-offs from the Pearl River and offshore seawater intrusion from the South China Sea are responsible for the spatial-temporal variations of phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing.

We report the first mitochondrial genome sequences for the three band pennant fish, Heniochus chrysostomus. The whole mitogenome of H. chrysostomus was circular in shape and 16,650 bp in length. The mitogenome consists of 13 typical vertebrate protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes (12S rRNA and 16S rRNA), and 2 putative non-coding regions. Phylogenetic tree analysis revealed that H. chrysostomus was closely related to Heniochus diphreutes. This study will provide useful genetic information for future phylogenetic and taxonomic classification of Chaetodontidae.

Suspended mariculture has significantly influences on the benthic sediment. However, our understanding on how bacterial communities respond to mariculture induced changes in redox profiles is limited. In present study, sediments from two maricultures and reference areas were collected and incubated for 28 day. The results indicated that the dominant pathway of organic matter mineralization in the sediment varied from groups, in the reference, it was the iron reduction, but in the two mariculture groups it was the SO42- reduction. Remarkable changes of bacteria community were recorded in the aerobic zone, where the abundances of 14 OTUs belonging to Gammaproteobacteria and Alphaproteobacteria were significantly higher than that in oxidation and anaerobic zones. However, 4 keystone OTUs were strictly anaerobic and belonging to Desulfobacteraceae (n = 3) and Marinilabiaceae (n = 1). The main environmental drivers determining sediment bacterial distribution were the particle organic carbon, dissolve oxygen, NO3-, and moisture content.

Finfish cage culture is the most predominant form of mariculture. The rapid expansion of fish cage culture systems has raised concerns about their environmental impact, such as nutrient release. In this study, for the first time, we estimated the release of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from fish cage culture in Daya Bay, southern China, by constructing N and P budget models based on a mass balance principle. In addition, the contribution and importance of nutrients from fish culture and other nutrient sources, including submarine groundwater discharge, benthic sediments, local rivers, and atmospheric deposition were assessed. The annual amount of N and P released from fish cage culture was 205.6 metric tons (hereafter tons) of N and 39.2 tons of P, including 142.7 tons of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and 15.1 tons of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP). Among the analyzed nutrient sources, the contributions of DIN and DIP from fish culture were 7.0% and 2.7%, respectively. For cages consuming conventional trash fish, 142 kg of N and 26 kg of P were released into the environment per ton of fish products, much higher than the values (72 kg N and 17.3 kg P) for cages using formulated feed. In fish culture, the dissolved nutrients were more N rich, but the particulate nutrients were more P rich. The ratio of cage-derived N and P was 21.1, higher than the ratio of coastal seawater (27.1), indicating that cage culture may also impact the local nutrient forms around farming regions. Oyster cultivation and harvest removed 126.3 tons of N and 35.1 tons of P from of the bay. Replacing trash fish with formulated feed and co-culturing of nutrient extractive species (e.g., bivalves, macroalgae) and deposit-feeding species (e.g., sea cucumber) in fish culture zones can be efficient nutrient mitigation strategies.

Mariculture is known to contribute to oxygen depletion, pH decline and accumulation of nutrients and organic matter in sediments. However, studies on the bacterial vertical distribution of mariculture area are very limited. The bacterial abundance in the non-culture site (3.8 ±â€¯0.8 × 109 copies g-1) was significantly higher than that in the three mariculture sites (1.2 ±â€¯0.2 × 109 copies g-1), and bacterial diversity in the non-culture site was significantly higher than that in fish cage-TF (p < 0.05). The vertical distribution profiles of bacteria in non-culture and oyster culture sites were similar but very different from that of fish cage-TF. In addition, significant downward trends in bacterial abundance and diversity were observed as sediment depth increased (p < 0.05), and the most relevant environmental factors were moisture content, total nitrogen, total organic carbon and carbon/nitrogen. The dominant bacterial phyla in sediment were Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi and Bacteroidetes.

In recent years, the GPS wave buoy has been developed for in situ wave monitoring based on satellite GPS signals. Many research works have been completed on the GPS-based wave measurement technology and great progress has been achieved. The basic principle of the GPS wave buoy is to calculate the movement velocity of the buoy using the Doppler frequency shift of satellite GPS signals, and then to calculate the wave parameters from the movement velocity according to ocean wave theory. The shortage of the GPS wave buoy is the occasional occurrence of some unusual values in the movement velocity. This is mainly due to the fact that the GPS antenna is occasionally covered by sea water and cannot normally receive high-quality satellite GPS signals. The traditional solution is to remove these unusual movement velocity values from the records, which requires furthering extend the acquisition time of satellite GPS signals to ensure there is a large enough quantity of effective movement velocity values. Based on the traditional GPS wave measurement technology, this paper presents the algorithmic flow and proposes two improvement measures. On the one hand, the neural network algorithm is used to correct the unusual movement velocity data so that extending the acquisition time of satellite GPS signals is not necessary and battery power is saved. On the other hand, the Gaussian low-pass filter is used to correct the raw directional wave spectrum, which can further eliminate the influence of noise spectrum energy and improve the measurement accuracy. The on-site sea test of the SBF7-1A GPS wave buoy, developed by the National Ocean Technology Center in China, and the gravity-acceleration-type DWR-MKIII Waverider buoy are highlighted in this article. The wave data acquired by the two buoys are analyzed and processed. It can be seen from the processed results that the ocean wave parameters from the two kinds of wave buoys, such as wave height, wave period, wave direction, wave frequency spectrum, and directional wave spectrum, are in good consistency, indicating that the SBF7-1A GPS wave buoy is comparable to the traditional gravity-acceleration-type wave buoy in terms of its accuracy. Therefore, the feasibility and validity of the two improvement measures proposed in this paper are confirmed.

With the rapid development of mariculture in China, large amounts of antibiotics are being discharged into the aquatic environment. Little information is available regarding antibiotics and corresponding antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) associated with maricultural environments in China. Sediments from eleven typical mariculture areas along the whole coastline of China were collected, and the sediment in Meijijiao in southern China was used as a non-mariculture control. The results revealed that antibiotics and their corresponding ARGs were widely distributed in most maricultural sediments, and present at low concentrations in samples from Meijijiao. The sulfonamide-resistance genes were prevalent, and the sul1 and sul2 in Penglai were the highest detected by using quantitative PCR. Moreover, remarkable differences in ARGs among different sites were observed. Due to the limited availability of primers to detect ARGs, illumina high-throughput sequencing was also used for profiling ARGs, and the results showed that the abundance of bacA in all samples was the highest compared to other ARGs, followed by mexF and mexB. This is the first study to comprehensively investigate the antibiotic resistance profile in typical mariculture areas along the whole coast of China. This study provides insights into the impacts of mariculture on the profiles of bacterial and ARG compositions in China.

More attention was previously paid to adverse effects of steroids on aquatic organisms and their ecological risks to the aquatic environment. So far, little information has been reported on the bioaccumulative characteristics of different classes of steroids in cultured fish tissues. The present study for the first time provided a comprehensive analysis of the occurrence, bioaccumulation, and global consumers' health risks via fish consumption of androgens, glucocorticoids and progestanges in typical freshwater cultured farms in South China. The numbers and total concentrations of steroids detected in the tissues of five common species of the cultured fish were in the order of plasma > bile > liver > muscle and plasma > bile, muscle > liver, respectively. The field bioaccumulation factors for the detected synthetic steroids ranged from 450 to 97,000 in bile, 450 to 65,000 in plasma, 2900 to 16,000 in liver, and 42 to 2600 in muscle of fish, respectively. This data suggests that steroids are bioaccumulative in fish tissues. Mostly important, 4-androstene-3,17-dione (AED) and cortisone (CRN) were found to be reliable chemical indicators to predict the levels of steroids in plasma and muscle of the inter-species cultured fish, respectively. Furthermore, the maximum hazard quotients (HQs) of testosterone and progesterone were 5.8 × 10-4 and 9.9 × 10-5, suggesting that human health risks were negligible via ingestion of the steroids-contaminated fish.

A marine algicidal bacterium N3 was isolated from a HABs area in Mirs Bay, a subtropical bay, in southern China. Algicidal activity and algicidal mode against Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Scrippsiella trochoidea, Prorocentrum micans and Skeletonema costatum were observed by the liquid infection method. The results showed that there were no algicidal activities against P. tricornutum and S. costatum. However, when the bacterial volume fractions were 2% and 10% , S. trochoidea and P. micans could be killed, respectively. S. trochoidea cells which were exposed to strain N3 became irregular in shape and the cellular components lost their integrity and were decomposed. While, the P. micans cells became inflated and the cellular components aggregated, followed by cell lysis. Strain N3 killed S. trochoidea and P. micans directly, and the algicidal activities of the bacterial strain N3 was concentration-dependent. To S. trochoidea, 2% (V/V) of bacteria in algae showed the strongest algicidal activity, all of the S. trochoidea cells were killed within 120 h. But the growth rates of cells, in the 1% and 0. 1% treatment groups, were only slightly lower than that in the control group. In all treatment groups, the densities of strain N3 were in declining trends. While, to P. micans, 10% and 5% of bacteria in algae showed strong algicidal activities, 78% and 70% of the S. trochoidea were killed within 120 h, respectively. However, the number of S. trochoidea after exposure to 1% of bacterial cultures still increased up to 5 incubation days. And in the three treatment groups, the densities of strain N3 experienced a decrease process. The isolated strain N3 was identified as Bacillus sp. by morphological observation, physiological and biochemical characterization, and homology comparisons based on 16S rRNA sequences.

Four marine bacterial strains P1, P5, N5 and N21 were isolated from the surface water and sediment of Mirs Bay in southern Chinese coast using the liquid infection method with 48-well plates. These bacteria were all shown to have algicidal activities against Skeletonema costatum. Based on morphological observations, biochemical tests and homology comparisons by 16S rDNA sequences, the isolated strains P1, P5, N5 and N21 were identified as Halobacillus sp., Muricauda sp., Kangiella sp. and Roseivirga sp., respectively. Our results showed that bacterial strain P1 killed S. costatum by release of heat labile algicide, while strains P5, N5 and N21 killed them directly. The algicidal processes of four bacterial strains were different. Strains P1, N5 and N21 disrupted the chain structure and S. costatum appeared as single cells, in which the cellular components were aggregated and the individual cells were inflated and finally lysed, while strain P5 decomposed the algal chains directly. We also showed that the algicidal activities of the bacterial strains were concentration-dependent. More specifically, 10 % (v/v) of bacteria in algae showed the strongest algicidal activities, as all S. costatum cells were killed by strains N5 and N21 within 72 h and by strains P1 and P5 within 96 h. 5 % of bacteria in algae also showed significant algicidal activities, as all S. costatum were killed by strains N5, P5 and N21 within 72, 96 and 120 h, respectively, whereas at this concentration, only 73.4 % of S. costatum cells exposed to strain P1 were killed within 120 h. At the concentration of 1 % bacteria in algae, the number of S. costatum cells continued to increase and the growth rate of algae upon exposure to strain N5 was significantly inhibited.

Based on samples collected in the waters around Nansha Islands from August 25 to September 28, 2011, the characteristics of net phytoplankton community and their relationships to environmental factors were investigated. A total of 113 species, belonging to 34 genera of 3 phyla were identified, among which 57.5% belonged to Pyrrophyta and 40.7% belonged to Bacillariophyta. Ceratium in Pyrrophyta had the most species accounting for 30.1% of the 113 species. The average abundance of net phytoplankton was 2.12 x 10(4) cell x m(-3) and high abundances were encountered in the complex gyre adjacent to Reed Tablemount and in the Cyclonic Gyre adjacent to Wan'an Tan. Trichodesmium in Cyanophyta was the dominant functional group, taking up 77.0% of the total net phytoplankton abundance. Trichodesmium thiebautii, T. erythraeum and Pyrocystis noctiluca were the major dominant species. The dominant species varied with locations. Cyanophyta widely dominated at stations 3, 5, 6 and 10-14, Pyrrophyta were the dominant phytoplankton in the central locations at stations 4 and 7-9, while Bacillariophyta dominated only at the southernmost stations 1 and 2. The values of Shannon index and Pielou evenness index of net phytoplankton community were 3.10 and 0.62, respectively. The salinity, water temperature, contents of ammonium, nitrite, phosphate and silicate, as well as mesoscale gyres and the west Nansha coastal current were the important environmental factors affecting the characteristics of net phytoplankton community. The ordination plots by canonical correspondence analysis could well display the characteristics of net phytoplankton community and their relationships to environmental factors.

The rapid development of human activities has caused serious eutrophication of coastal waters in China in the recent decades. The study of the biofiltration capacity of Laminaria japonica under laboratory conditions showed a significant nutrient uptake. After 36 h of incubation, around 42%, 46%, 44% of N and 45%, 42%, 35% of P were removed from three gradients of medium concentrations, respectively. In the conditions of different ratios of N/P and NO(3)-N/NH(4)-N, the optimum N/P ratio for nutrient uptake was 7.4 and L. japonica preferred NO(3)-N rather than NH(4)-N as nitrogen source. Temperature and irradiance affected uptake rates significantly. The maximal N uptake rate appeared at 10°C and 18 µmol photons m(-2)s(-1) and the maximal P uptake rate was found at 15°C and 144 µmol photons m(-2)s(-1). Moreover, further studies were needed to investigate the bioremediation potential of L. japonica in the open sea.

Uptake of Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis and variations of trypsin amylase activity acid phosphatase and superoxide dismutase in tissue of the scallop Patinopecten yessoensis were detected. The results showed that P. yessoensis accumulated E. faecalis in larger numbers and more rapidly than E. coli, both with the highest concentration in the digestive tract and lowest in hemolymph. Compared to E. coli, all scallops exposed to E. faecalis showed significantly higher trypsin and AMS activity. SOD activity in hemocytes and ACP activity in hemolymph was significantly higher in the treatments with 5 log(10)CFU/ml E. coli than with E. faecalis. But no significant differences in ACP activity of P. yessoensis exposed to a 3 log(10)CFU/ml inoculum of both bacteria were recorded. In conclusion, the mass retention of gut microflora in P. yessoensis is positively correlated with digestive enzymes activity and negatively correlated with ACP activity in the hemocyte.
