RESUMO

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the relationship between estimated pulse wave velocity (ePWV) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in people living with HIV (PLWH), proposing a novel and convenient predictor for early detection of MetS in PLWH. Patients and Methods: A total of 485 PLWH were enrolled. These participants were categorized into two groups based on the estimated pulse wave velocity (ePWV) level. Demographic and clinical data were collected to investigate the correlation between ePWV and MetS. Results: The cohort of 485 PLWH was categorized into high-ePWV and low-ePWV groups based on ePWV cutoff value of 10 m/s. We observed significant differences in components of MetS including triglycerides (TG, P < 0.05), HDL cholesterol (HDL-C, P < 0.01), systolic blood pressure (SBP, P < 0.001), diastolic blood pressure (DBP, P < 0.05), and fasting plasma glucose (FPG, P < 0.001) between the two groups. Furthermore, we employed receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves to demonstrate the effectiveness of ePWV as a predictive indicator for MetS in PLWH (AUC = 0.739, P < 0.001). According to the ROC curve, the optimal cut-off value of ePWV was 7.4 m/s, and its sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing MetS in PLWH were 79.03% and 64.07%, respectively. Although the 7.4 m/s cutoff increased the false positive rate compared to the traditional cutoff, it significantly reduced the rate of missed diagnoses, effectively identifying 79.03% of PLWH with MetS. Conclusion: ePWV is a non-invasive and convenient novel biomarker with predictive capabilities for MetS in PLWH.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) electrodes are implanted using a variety of stereotactic technologies to treat refractory epilepsy. The value of the SINO robot for SEEG electrode implantation is not yet defined. The aim of the current study was to assess the value of the SINO robot in conjunction with Angio Render technology for SEEG electrode implantation and to assess its efficacy. METHODS: Between June 2018 and October 2020, 58 patients underwent SEEG electrode implantation to resect or ablate their epileptogenic zone (EZ). The SINO robot and the Angio Render technology was used to guide the electrodes and visualize the individual vasculature in a three-dimensional (3D) fashion. The 3D view functionality was used to increase the safety and accuracy of the electrode implantation, and for reducing the risk of hemorrhage by avoiding blood vessels. RESULTS: In this study, 634 SEEG electrodes were implanted in 58 patients, with a mean of 10.92 (range: 5-18) leads per patient. The mean entry point localization error (EPLE) was 0.94 ± 0.23 mm (range: 0.39-1.63 mm), and the mean target point localization error (TPLE) was 1.49 ± 0.37 mm (range: 0.80-2.78 mm). The mean operating time per lead (MOTPL) was 6. 18 ± 1.80 minutes (range: 3.02-14.61 minutes). The mean depth of electrodes was 56.96 ± 3.62 mm (range: 27.23-124.85 mm). At a follow-up of at least 1 year, in total, 81.57% (47/58) patients achieved an Engel class I seizure freedom. There were two patients with asymptomatic intracerebral hematomas following SEEG electrode placement, with no late complications or mortality in this cohort. CONCLUSIONS: The SINO robot in conjunction with Angio Render technology-in SEEG electrode implantation is safe and accurate in mitigating the risk of intracranial hemorrhage in patients suffering from drug-resistant epilepsy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Accurate detection of focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a pivotal role in the preoperative assessment of epilepsy. The integration of multimodal imaging has demonstrated substantial value in both diagnosing FCD and devising effective surgical strategies. This study aimed to enhance MRI post-processing by incorporating positron emission tomography (PET) analysis. We sought to compare the diagnostic efficacy of diverse image post-processing methodologies in patients presenting MRI-negative FCD. METHODS: In this retrospective investigation, we assembled a cohort of patients with negative preoperative MRI results. T1-weighted volumetric sequences were subjected to morphometric analysis program (MAP) and composite parametric map (CPM) post-processing techniques. We independently co-registered images derived from various methods with PET scans. The alignment was subsequently evaluated, and its correlation was correlated with postoperative seizure outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 41 patients were enrolled in the study. In the PET-MAP(p = 0.0189) and PET-CPM(p = 0.00041) groups, compared with the non-overlap group, the overlap group significantly associated with better postoperative outcomes. In PET(p = 0.234), CPM(p = 0.686) and MAP(p = 0.672), there is no statistical significance between overlap and seizure-free outcomes. The sensitivity of using the CPM alone outperformed the MAP (0.65 vs 0.46). The use of PET-CPM demonstrated superior sensitivity (0.96), positive predictive value (0.83), and negative predictive value (0.91), whereas the MAP displayed superior specificity (0.71). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggested a superiority in sensitivity of CPM in detecting potential FCD lesions compared to MAP, especially when it is used in combination with PET for diagnosis of MRI-negative epilepsy patients. Moreover, we confirmed the superiority of synergizing metabolic imaging (PET) with quantitative maps derived from structural imaging (MAP or CPM) to enhance the identification of subtle epileptogenic zones (EZs). This study serves to illuminate the potential of integrated multimodal techniques in advancing our capability to pinpoint elusive pathological features in epilepsy cases.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Due to the chronic nature of HIV, mental health has become a critical concern in people living with HIV (PLWHIV). However, little knowledge exists about the association between fear of progression (FoP) and medical coping modes (MCMs) in PLWHIV in China. METHODS: A cohort of 303 PLWHIV were consecutively enrolled and their demographic, clinical and psychological information was collected. The Fear of Progression Questionnaire-Short Form (FoP-Q-SF), Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), Internalized HIV Stigma Scale (IHSS) and MCMs Questionnaire were utilized. RESULTS: Of the participants, 215 PLWHIV were classified into the low-level FoP group, and 88 were grouped into the high-level FoP group based on their FoP-Q-SF scores, according to the criteria for the classification of dysfunctional FoP in cancer patients. The high-level group had a higher proportion of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) stage (P = 0.005), lower education levels (P = 0.027) and lower income levels (P = 0.031). Additionally, the high-level group had lower scores in social support (P < 0.001) and its three dimensions, with total SSRS scores showing a negative correlation with two dimensions of FoP-Q-SF, namely physical health (r2 = 0.0409, P < 0.001) and social family (r2 = 0.0422, P < 0.001). Further, the high-level group had higher scores in four dimensions of internalized HIV stigma, and a positive relationship was found to exist between IHSS scores and FoP-Q-SF scores for physical health (r2 = 0.0960, P < 0.001) and social family (r2 = 0.0719, P < 0.001). Social support (OR = 0.929, P = 0.001), being at the AIDS stage (OR = 3.795, P = 0.001), and internalized HIV stigma (OR = 1.028, P < 0.001) were independent factors for FoP. Furthermore, intended MCMs were evaluated. FoP were positively correlated with avoidance scores (r2 = 0.0886, P < 0.001) and was validated as the only factor for the mode of confrontation (OR = 0.944, P = 0.001) and avoidance (OR = 1.059, P = 0.001) in multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION: The incidence of dysfunctional FoP in our study population was relatively high. High-level FoP was associated with poor social support, high-level internalized HIV stigma and a negative MCM among PLWHIV.

RESUMO

Reversible three-electron redox of Cr3+ /Cr6+ in layered cathode materials for rechargeable batteries is very attractive in layered cathode materials, which leads to high capacity and energy density for rechargeable batteries. However, the poor reversibility and Cr-ion migration make it very challenging. In this work, by introducing V ions into tetrahedral sites of layer-structured NaCrO2 , reversible three-electron redox of Cr3+ /Cr6+ is realized successfully in NaCr0.92 V0.05 O2 (NCV05) cathode for potassium-ion batteries with a cut-off voltage of 4.0 V. V ions can weaken the attraction of Cr to electrons, leading to enhanced valence change of Cr ions. On the other hand, V in tetrahedral sites can facilitate the reversible migration of Cr between octahedral and tetrahedral sites via coulombic repulsion to realize the reversible redox between Cr3+ and Cr6+ during charge and discharge processes. In addition, V ions can inhibit the phase transition from O3 phase to O'3 phase during the charge process by adjusting the crystal lattices. As a result, the NaCr0.92 V0.05 O2 cathode exhibits a high reversible capacity of 130 mAh g-1 with promising cycle stability and rate capability. The strategy opens new opportunity for developing high-capacity cathode materials for potassium-ion batteries.

RESUMO

Protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) are critical regulators of signal transduction but have yet to be exploited fully for drug development. Receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase δ (RPTPδ/PTPRD) has been shown to elicit tumor-promoting functions, including elevating SRC activity and promoting metastasis in certain cell contexts. Dimerization has been implicated in the inhibition of receptor protein tyrosine phosphatases (RPTPs). We have generated antibodies targeting PTPRD ectodomains with the goal of manipulating their dimerization status ectopically, thereby regulating intracellular signaling. We have validated antibody binding to endogenous PTPRD in a metastatic breast cancer cell line, CAL51, and demonstrated that a monoclonal antibody, RD-43, inhibited phosphatase activity and induced the degradation of PTPRD. Similar effects were observed following chemically induced dimerization of its phosphatase domain. Mechanistically, RD-43 triggered the formation of PTPRD dimers in which the phosphatase activity was impaired. Subsequently, the mAb-PTPRD dimer complex was degraded through lysosomal and proteasomal pathways, independently of secretase cleavage. Consequently, treatment with RD-43 inhibited SRC signaling and suppressed PTPRD-dependent cell invasion. Together, these findings demonstrate that manipulating RPTP function via antibodies to the extracellular segments has therapeutic potential.

RESUMO

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) are an important group of emerging contaminants that may threaten organisms at trace concentrations. However, research on the occurrence of PPCPs in urban lakes in China is still scarce. In this study, 15 PPCPs in the Tangxun Lake and the Donghu Lake were collected using the diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) technique and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). Thirteen of the 15 targeted PPCPs were detected in the Tangxun Lake, and all PPCPs were detected in the Donghu Lake, with total concentrations ranging from 160 to 730 ng/L (average: 401 ng/L) and 187 to 1933 ng/L (average: 653 ng/L), respectively. Bisphenol A (BPA) was the dominant PPCP, followed by disinfectants in both lakes. The total concentrations of PPCPs in the Donghu Lake were higher than those in the Tangxun Lake. The spatial distribution characteristics of PPCPs in the two lakes were different, with higher total concentrations in the eastern part than in the western part of the Tangxun Lake spatially and higher in the north-western part than in the south-eastern part of the Donghu Lake. The results of the risk assessment showed that BPA and estrone posed high risks to the aquatic environment (RQ ≥ 1), while triclosan and estriol presented a medium risk (0.1 ≤ RQ < 1) in some sites. This study was the first attempt to apply DGT for providing vital data on the evaluation of the ecological risk of PPCPs in the two largest lakes in China, and attention should be paid to the long-term ecological effects caused by the occurrence of PPCPs in lakes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Ultrasound (US) plays an important role in the diagnosis and management of breast diseases; however, effective breast US screening is lacking in rural and remote areas. To alleviate this issue, we prospectively evaluated the clinical availability of 5G-based telerobotic US technology for breast examinations in rural and remote areas. METHODS: Between September 2020 and March 2021, 63 patients underwent conventional and telerobotic US examinations in a rural island (Scenario A), while 20 patients underwent telerobotic US examination in a mobile car located in a remote county (Scenario B) in May 2021. The safety, duration, US image quality, consistency, and acceptability of the 5G-based telerobotic US were assessed. RESULTS: In Scenario A, the average duration of the telerobotic US procedure was longer than that of conventional US (10.3 ± 3.3 min vs. 7.6 ± 3.0 min, p = 0.017), but their average imaging scores were similar (4.86 vs. 4.90, p = 0.159). Two cases of gynecomastia, one of lactation mastitis, and one of postoperative breast effusion were diagnosed and 32 nodules were detected using the two US methods. There was good interobserver agreement between the US features and BI-RADS categories of the identical nodules (ICC = 0.795-1.000). In Scenario B, breast nodules were detected in 65% of the patients using telerobotic US. Its average duration was 10.1 ± 2.3 min, and the average imaging score was 4.85. Overall, 90.4% of the patients were willing to choose telerobotic US in the future, and tele-sonologists were satisfied with 85.5% of the examinations. CONCLUSION: The 5G-based telerobotic US system is feasible for providing effective breast examinations in rural and remote areas.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Although the indications for antiviral therapy for patients with chronic hepatitis B have been gradually expanded in different guidelines, antiviral treatment efficacy remains unclear among HBeAg-seropositive patients with alanine aminotransferase (ALT) < 2 upper limits of normal (ULN). This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of antiviral therapy for these patients. METHODS: In total, 102 treatment-naive patients who were HBeAg seropositive with ALT < 2 ULN and had received nucleotide analogs were included, and their clinical data were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: After 96-week treatment, 84.3% (n = 86), 26.5% (n = 27) and 20.6% (n = 21) patients achieved virological response, HBeAg seroclearance and HBeAg seroconversion, respectively. Logistic regression analysis revealed that baseline AST (odds ratio [OR] = 1.069, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.014-1.127, p = 0.014), serum HBV DNA (OR = 0.540, 95% CI 0.309-0.946, p = 0.031) and quantitative HBsAg levels (OR = 0.147, 95% CI 0.036-0.597, p = 0.007) were independent factors for virological response. At baseline, HBsAg < 4.63 log10 IU/ml was identified as a strong predictor for the 96-week virological response, with a concordance rate of 0.902. Moreover, the levels of liver stiffness values (8.30 ± 3.86 vs. 6.17 ± 1.91, p < 0.001) at week 96 had significantly declined compared to baseline. CONCLUSION: Nucleotide analog treatment effectively suppressed HBV DNA in patients with HBeAg-seropositive chronic hepatitis B with ALT < 2 × ULN and greatly improved liver fibrosis. The study also found that HBsAg < 4.63 log10 IU/ml was a strong predictor of the virological response.

RESUMO

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of high body mass index (BMI) and normal weight people living with HIV after antiretroviral therapy (ART) and establish a model. Methods: A total of 290 people living with HIV after 1 year of ART treatment were enrolled and divided into two groups based on whether their BMI index was <24 or ⩾24 at week 48. The demographic, clinical data were collected and analyzed. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed. A model was established and use to predict the occurrence of certain diseases. Results: A total of 290 people living with HIV were included in this study; 200 had a normal BMI (BMI < 24) and 90 were high BMI (BMI ⩾ 24) after 1-year ART. Their baseline characteristics were significantly different in relation to age (p = 0.007), sex distribution (p = 0.040), ART regimen (p = 0.040), alanine aminotransferase levels (p < 0.001), and three major serum lipid levels: triglycerides (p < 0.001), cholesterol (p = 0.011), and low-density lipoprotein (p = 0.005). A multivariate logistic regression analysis resulted in the development of a model for the diagnosis of high BMI and hyperlipidemia. The model score is an independent risk factor for hyperlipidemia (odds ratio = 2.674, p = 0.001) and high BMI (p < 0.001). The model score is significantly correlated with the controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) value (r = 0.230, p < 0.001) and can be used to divide the severity of liver steatosis based on CAP value. Conclusions: This study demonstrated a easy-to-use model to detect high BMI, hyperlipidemia, and liver steatosis in people living with HIV without risk factors for BMI changing at baseline after 1 year of ART treatment.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study investigated the value of synchronous tele-ultrasonography (TUS) for naive operators in thyroid ultrasonography (US) examinations. METHODS: Ninety-seven patients were included in this prospective, parallel-controlled trial. Thyroid scanning and diagnosis were completed by resident A independently, resident B with guidance from a US expert through synchronous TUS, and an on-site US expert. The on-site expert's findings constituted the reference standard. Two other off-site US experts analyzed all data in a blind manner. Inter-operator consistency between the two residents and the on-site US expert for thyroid size measurements, nodule measurements, nodule features, American College of Radiology (ACR) Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TI-RADS) categories, and image quality was compared. Two questionnaires were completed to evaluate the clinical benefit. RESULTS: Resident B detected more nodules consistent with the on-site expert than resident A did (89.4% vs. 56.5%, P<0.001). Resident B achieved excellent consistency with the on-site expert in terms of ACR TI-RADS categories, nodule composition, shape, echogenic foci, and vascularity (all intra-class correlation coefficients [ICCs] >0.75), while resident A achieved lower consistency in ACR TI-RADS categories, composition, echogenicity, margin, echogenic foci, and vascularity (all ICCs 0.40-0.75). Residents A and B had excellent consistency in target nodule measurements (all ICCs >0.75). Resident B achieved better performance than resident A for gray values, time gain compensation, depth, color Doppler adjustment, and the visibility of key information (all P<0.05). Furthermore, 61.9% (60/97) of patients accepted synchronous TUS, and 59.8% (58/97) patients were willing to pay for it. CONCLUSION: Synchronous TUS can help inexperienced residents achieve comparable thyroid diagnostic capability to a US expert.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To investigate the association between hypertension and clinical outcomes, including in-hospital mortality, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and invasive ventilation in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia. METHODS: We implemented a systematic search of PubMed for articles that assessed clinical outcomes of hypertensive patients infected with SARS-CoV-2. The primary outcomes evaluated included: in-hospital mortality, ICU admission, and the use of invasive ventilation. RESULTS: A total of 18 studies were included, involving 13,293 patients and covering from January 25, 2020, to April 20, 2020. The relationship between hypertension and prognosis in COVID-19 patients was evaluated. Results showed that hypertension was a risk factor for in-hospital mortality in COVID-19 patients (RR: 2.20, 95% CI, 1.83-2.65, P < .001). Moreover, patients with hypertension were more likely to be admitted to ICU (RR: 1.86, 95% CI, 1.13-3.07, P = .001) and to use invasive ventilation (RR: 2.99, 95% CI, 1.73-5.17, P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Among COVID-19 patients, those combined with hypertension had a significantly higher risk of in-hospital deaths, admission to ICU, and need for invasive ventilation.

RESUMO

Karst groundwater is an important water resource but it is vulnerable to contaminants, due to the distinctive geological features of abundant transmissive fractures and conduits in the karst area which connect the surface to the underground systems. Anthropogenic activity-derived polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the surface environment could enter groundwater easily and rapidly and threaten water security in karst areas. Samples in the multimedia environment from 10 specific karst spring systems from Western Hubei of Central China were collected to analyze 16 priority PAHs and to investigate their transport in these karst spring systems. The total concentrations of PAHs in the soil, river water, river sediments, spring water, and spring sediments ranged between 6.04 and 67.7 ng g-1, 4.56 and 11.4 ng L-1, 29.9 and 1041 ng g-1, 4.09 and 222 ng L-1, and 5.88 and 83.0 ng g-1, respectively. Levels of PAHs in this area were relatively low when compared to other karst areas. Proportions of low-molecular-weight (LMW)-PAHs in the water, sediments and soil (average 58.2-78.8%) were much higher than those of high-molecular-weight (HMW)-PAHs. The proportion of LMW-PAHs in the sediments (especially in river sediments) was higher than that in the soil. Characteristic ratio analysis and principal component analysis showed that PAHs were from high-temperature combustion of the mixture of coal and biomass, and vehicle emission, where coal and biomass combustion were the dominant sources. Significant correlations of PAH compositions in different media of karst spring systems were observed, especially in the Yuquangdong (YQD)-Migongquan (MGQ), Jiuzhenziquan (JZZQ), Xianyudong (XYD) and Fengdong (FD) karst spring systems, indicating the rapid PAH transport from the recharge area soil to the discharge area of spring water and sediments.

RESUMO

This study focused on the mental health of people living with HIV(PLWHIV) and explored their relationship between loneliness and perceived social support, health related quality of life (HRQoL) with a method of structural equation model. We collected clinical and psychological data from consecutively enrolled PLWHIV. A total of 201 PLWHIVs were enrolled and measured with self-reporting survey instruments of UCLA Loneliness Scale, Self-Rating Depression Scale, Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, Social Support Ratio Scale and Short Form Health Survey-36. The levels of loneliness, depression, anxiety, perceived social support and HRQoL were assessed. PLWHIV enrolled were divided into two groups of loneliness and non-loneliness based on their UCLA Loneliness Scale scores. Multivariable analysis indicated that being married is a protective factor associated with loneliness (OR = 0.226; P = 0.032). We further found the loneliness group had a higher level of depression (P < 0.001) and anxiety (P < 0.001), but lower level of HRQoL (P < 0.001) than the non-loneliness group. We found there was a positive linear correlation between social support and HRQoL among the enrolled PLWHIVs (r2 = 0.0592; P = 0.0005). A structural equation model (SEM) was established to evaluate whether the loneliness played as a mediation role between social support and HRQoL. The model showed loneliness as a mediation from social support leading to a decrease of HRQoL. Our findings showed a potential psychological pathway from social support to HRQoL, suggesting the need for interventions focusing on social support may improve poor HRQoL lead by loneliness.

RESUMO

Aim: To develop a nomogram based on neutrophil-to-platelet ratio (NPR) to predict in-hospital mortality in infective endocarditis (IE) patients. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 294 consecutive patients classified as survivors or nonsurvivors according to hospitalization outcome. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify independent predictors for in-hospital mortality. A nomogram based on them was established and assessed by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Results: Admission NPR (odds ratio [OR] = 1.095, 95% CI: 1.037-1.156), positive blood culture (OR = 9.220; 95% CI: 1.478-57.521) and left-sided endocarditis (OR = 5.099; 95% CI: 1.104-23.553) independently predicted in-hospital mortality in IE. The area under the ROC curve for the nomogram based on these predictors was 0.832. Conclusion: The nomogram based on NPR could be used for early risk stratification of IE patients.

RESUMO

ß-Cyclodextrin (ß-CD) is an inexpensive and reproducible material derived from corn starch. It is possible that tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile-crosslinked ß-cyclodextrin polymer (TFN-CD), a cheap but efficient adsorbent, could be a suitable binding agent for use in the passive sampling technique, diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT). Herein, the TFN-CD binding gel was prepared and then evaluated as the binding phase of DGT to sample six endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in water. The TFN-CD dispersed uniformly in the binding gel due to its hydrophilicity. The quantitative recoveries (99.3%-106%) of EDCs from the TFN-CD binding gel could be conveniently achieved by ultrasonic extraction using 5 mL methanol for 10 min. Compared with the excellent HLB (hydrophilic-lipophilic-balanced resin) binding gel, the TFN-CD binding gel had comparable or even faster adsorption kinetics, although the equilibrium adsorption capacity was slightly lower. The effective adsorption capacities of TFN-CD-based DGT (TFN-CD-DGT) were roughly estimated to enable a 7-days deployment in EDC solution of 25.7-30.0 µg L-1. Studies of influencing factors showed that the ionic strength (0-0.5 M), pH (3.73-9.13), dissolved organic matter (0-20 mg L-1) and long-term storage (204 days) had negligible influence on the performance of TFN-CD-DGT. Finally, the TFN-CD-DGT was successfully used to record sudden increases in bulk concentrations during simulated discharge events in pond water. These results demonstrate that TFN-CD is a suitable binding agent for sampling of EDCs, and the low cost of TFN-CD could be conducive to the application of DGT in large-scale sampling.

RESUMO

Residential solid fuel combustion (RSFC) is a key cause of air pollution in China. In these serial studies, field measurements of RSFC from 166 rural households in eastern China were conducted to update the database of emission factors (EFs) and chemical profiles of gaseous and particulate organic pollutants, and the present study focuses on the intermediate volatile organic compounds (IVOCs), which are precursors of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). The results show that the averaged EFs of IVOCs (EFIVOC) for crop straw, fuelwood, and coal are 550.7 ± 397.9, 416.1 ± 249.5, and 361.9 ± 308.0 mg/kg, respectively, which are among the EFIVOC of gasoline vehicle, diesel vehicle, non-road machinery, and heavy fuel oil vessel, and are significantly affected by fuel, stove, and combustion efficiency. The percentages of normal alkanes (n-alkanes), branched alkanes (b-alkanes), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and unresolved complex mixture from RSFC are 3.5 ± 1.6, 8.0 ± 3.7, 17.6 ± 6.7, and 70.9 ± 8.1%, respectively, and the compositions are featured by lower b-alkanes and higher PAHs than those of vehicle sources. The proportions of some individual n-alkanes and PAHs (such as n-C12-n-C15, naphthalene, and its alkyl substituents) can be used as indicators to differentiate RSFC from vehicle sources, while methoxyphenols can be used to distinguish biomass burning from coal combustion. Based on China's energy statistics, the total IVOC emissions from RSFC in 2014 were 175.9 Gg. These data will help to update the IVOC emission inventory and improve the estimates of SOA production in China.

RESUMO

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) destroys tumor cells mainly through singlet oxygen (1O2) generated by light-irradiated photosensitizers (PSs). However, the fleeting half-life of 1O2 greatly impairs PDT efficacy. Herein, we propose an unreported unsaturated fatty acid (UFA)-assisted PS co-assembly strategy to address this problem. Three UFAs, namely, oleic acid (OA), linoleic acid (LA) and linolenic acid (LNA), are capable of co-assembling with 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin (TAPP) into uniform nanoparticles. Under irradiation, TAPP produces 1O2, which directly attacks tumor cells and simultaneously oxidizes UFAs to generate lipid hydroperoxides with sustained damage. Interestingly, the unsaturation degree of UFAs is not only related to their peroxidation rate but also has a remarkable impact on the intracellular TAPP release characteristic of the nanoparticles (NPs). The TAPP-LA NPs could release the cargo rapidly and produce the highest lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species levels upon irradiation. Such a unique finding sheds new light on UFA-based combination applications for enhanced photodynamic efficacy by boosting lipid peroxidation.

RESUMO

The residential sector is a major source of air pollutant emission inventory uncertainties. A nationwide field emission measurement campaign was conducted in rural China to evaluate the variabilities of realistic emission factors (EFs) from indoor solid fuel combustion. For a total of 1313 burning events, the overall average EFs (±standard deviation) of PM2.5 were 8.93 ± 6.95 and 7.33 ± 9.01 g/kg for biomass and coals, respectively, and 89.3 ± 51.2 and 114 ± 87 g/kg for CO. Higher EFs were found from burning of uncompressed straws, while lower EFs were found from processed biomass pellets, coal briquettes, and relatively clean anthracite coals. Modified combustion efficiency was found to be the most significant factor associated with variations in CO EFs, whereas for PM2.5, fuel and stove differences determined its variations. Weak correlations between PM2.5 and CO indicated high uncertainties in using CO as a surrogate for PM2.5. EFs accurately fit log-normal distributions, and obvious spatial heterogeneity was observed attributed to different fuel-stove combinations across the country. Emission estimation variabilities, which are determined by the interquartile ranges divided by the median values, were notably reduced when spatially resolved EFs were adopted in the inventory.

RESUMO

To investigate the concentrations, spatial distribution, potential sources and mass fluxes of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in waters from the Danshui River Basin, a total of 20 water samples were collected and analyzed from a karstic river in Western Hubei of Central China. The average concentrations of total OCPs and PAHs in the river water were 4719 pg·L-1 and 26.2 ng·L-1, respectively. The characteristic ratios of different isomers and the composition analysis of individual OCPs and PAHs revealed that HCHs originated from a mixed input of technical HCHs and Lindane, DDTs were mainly from technical DDTs, and PAHs mainly originated from biomass and coal combustion. The mass flux analysis showed that PAHs had a higher emission and heavier burden than OCPs in the Danshui River Basin. OCPs and PAHs emitted from agricultural or other human activities could enter the groundwater and then be transported to the surface/river water in the karst area. The adsorption of OCPs and PAHs by particles and the sedimentation of particles could be the primary processes to intercept these pollutants in the water of the karstic river system.
