STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) has been used in several clinical areas. However, the effect of TENS on the masticatory muscles of young individuals with normal occlusion remains unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to assess the effect of TENS on the surface electromyographic (sEMG) activity of masticatory muscles in a young population with normal occlusion. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty residents (5 men and 15 women, mean 24.27 ±2.59 years) of Dalian Stomatological Hospital were enrolled as the study participants. A trained operator collected the required information from the participants. The experiment was divided into 3 stages: pre-TENS acquisition, TENS application, and post-TENS acquisition. The pre-TENS stage was performed using surface electromyography (sEMG) (Myotronics Inc) to acquire the potential values of masticatory muscles in the following 3 states 5 times each: resting, intercuspal occlusion (ICO), and maximum voluntary clench (clenching). The potential values of the anterior of temporalis (TA), the masseter (MM), the sternocleidomastoid (SCM), and the anterior digastric (DA) muscles were collected in the resting state, and TA and MM were collected in the ICO and clenching states. During the TENS application phase, a TENS Unit device (J5 Myomonitor) (J5) was used on each participant for 45 minutes. The post-TENS acquisition phase involved the same procedure as the pre-TENS phase. The experimental data were recorded, and the normality of each group was analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test in a statistical software program (IBM SPSS Statistics, v26.0). The paired-sample t test was used to compare the differences in the mean values of sEMG and the asymmetry index (As); the independent-sample t test was used to compare the activity index (Ac) and torque index (To) (α=.05). RESULTS: Significant differences were observed in the mean potential values of TA, MM, LSCM, and RDA before and after TENS in the resting state and RTA, LMM, and RMM before and after TENS in the clenching state (P<.05). Moreover, although AsDA values showed a significant difference (P=.027) before and after TENS in the resting state, the differences in As values for the other muscles in the resting state were statistically similar. Furthermore, in each state, the mean values of Ac and To after TENS showed no significant differences before and after TENS (P>.05). CONCLUSIONS: The resting EMG values of the TA and MM differed significantly before and after TENS. After TENS, the resting EMG activity decreased, whereas the functional EMG activity tended to increase.

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is an important evolutionary force in the formation of prokaryotic and eukaryotic genomes. In recent years, many HGT genes horizontally transferred from prokaryotes to eukaryotes have been reported, and most of them are present in arthropods. The Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei, an important economic species of arthropod, has close relationships with bacteria, providing a platform for horizontal gene transfer (HGT). In this study, we analyzed bacteria-derived HGT based on a high-quality genome of L. vannamei via a homology search and phylogenetic analysis, and six HGT genes were identified. Among these six horizontally transferred genes, we found one gene (LOC113799989) that contains a bacterial chondroitinase AC structural domain and encodes an unknown glycosaminoglycan (GAG) lyase in L. vannamei. The real-time quantitative PCR results showed that the mRNA expression level of LOC113799989 was highest in the hepatopancreas and heart, and after stimulation by Vibrio parahaemolyticus, its mRNA expression level was rapidly up-regulated within 12 h. Furthermore, after injecting si-RNA and stimulation by V. parahaemolyticus, we found that the experimental group had a higher cumulative mortality rate in 48 h than the control group, indicating that the bacteria-derived GAG lyase can reduce the mortality of shrimp with respect to infection by V. parahaemolyticus and might be related to the resistance of shrimp to bacterial diseases. Our findings contribute to the study of the function of GAGs and provide new insights into GAG-related microbial pathogenesis and host defense mechanisms in arthropods.

While phonon anharmonicity affects lattice thermal conductivity intrinsically and is difficult to be modified, controllable lattice defects routinely function only by scattering phonons extrinsically. Here, through a comprehensive study of crystal structure and lattice dynamics of Zintl-type Sr(Cu,Ag,Zn)Sb thermoelectric compounds using neutron scattering techniques and theoretical simulations, we show that the role of vacancies in suppressing lattice thermal conductivity could extend beyond defect scattering. The vacancies in Sr2ZnSb2 significantly enhance lattice anharmonicity, causing a giant softening and broadening of the entire phonon spectrum and, together with defect scattering, leading to a ~ 86% decrease in the maximum lattice thermal conductivity compared to SrCuSb. We show that this huge lattice change arises from charge density reconstruction, which undermines both interlayer and intralayer atomic bonding strength in the hierarchical structure. These microscopic insights demonstrate a promise of artificially tailoring phonon anharmonicity through lattice defect engineering to manipulate lattice thermal conductivity in the design of energy conversion materials.

Differentiating between a salvageable Ischemic Penumbra (IP) and an irreversibly damaged Infarct Core (IC) is important for therapy decision making for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients. Existing methods rely on Computed Tomography Perfusion (CTP) or Diffusion-Weighted Imaging-Fluid Attenuated Inversion Recovery (DWI-FLAIR). We designed a novel Convolutional Neural Network named I2PC-Net, which relies solely on Non-Contrast Computed Tomography (NCCT) for the automatic and simultaneous segmentation of the IP and IC. In the encoder, Multi-Scale Convolution (MSC) blocks were proposed to capture effective features of ischemic lesions, and in the deep levels of the encoder, Symmetry Enhancement (SE) blocks were also designed to enhance anatomical symmetries. In the attention-based decoder, hierarchical deep supervision was introduced to address the challenge of differentiating between the IP and IC. We collected 197 NCCT scans from AIS patients to evaluate the proposed method. On the test set, I2PC-Net achieved Dice Similarity Scores of 42.76 ± 21.84%, 33.54 ± 24.13% and 65.67 ± 12.30% and lesion volume correlation coefficients of 0.95 (p < 0.001), 0.61 (p < 0.001) and 0.93 (p < 0.001) for the IP, IC and IP + IC, respectively. The results indicated that NCCT could potentially be used as a surrogate technique of CTP for the quantitative evaluation of the IP and IC.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to examine the relationship between Toxoplasma gondii seropositivity and cognitive function in older adults. DESIGN: An observational cross-sectional study. SETTING: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) study took place at participants' homes and mobile examination centres. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 2956 older adults aged 60 and above from the NHANES from 2011 to 2014 were included in the study. Exposure of interest: participants had serum Toxoplasma gondii antibody analysed in the laboratory. A value>33 IU/mL was categorised as seropositive for Toxoplasma gondii infection; <27 IU/mL was categorised as seronegative for Toxoplasma gondii infection. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: Cognitive tests included the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease Word Learning subtest (CERAD-WL) for immediate and delayed memory, the Animal Fluency Test (AFT), and the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST). RESULTS: About half of the 2956 participants (mean age 70.0) were female (51.0%), non-Hispanic White (48.3%), and completed some college or above (48.3%). A total of 703 participants were positive for Toxoplasma gondii infection (23.8%). Adjusted linear regression showed that compared with participants with negative Toxoplasma gondii infection, those with positive Toxoplasma gondii infection had lower CERAD-WL immediate memory (beta (ß) -0.16, 95% CI -0.25 to -0.07), CERAD-WL delayed memory (ß -0.15, 95% CI -0.24 to -0.06), AFT (ß -0.15, 95% CI -0.24 to -0.06), DSST (ß -0.34, 95% CI -0.43 to -0.26), and global cognition (ß -0.24, 95% CI -0.32 to -0.16) z-scores after controlling for the covariates. CONCLUSIONS: Toxoplasma gondii seropositivity is associated with worse immediate and delayed verbal learning, language proficiency, executive functioning, processing speed, sustained attention, working memory, as well as global cognition in older adults. Public health measures aiming at preventing Toxoplasma gondii infection may help preserve cognitive functioning in older adults.

Zn batteries show promise for microscale applications due to their compatibility with air fabrication but face challenges like dendrite growth and chemical corrosion, especially at the microscale. Despite previous attempts in electrolyte engineering, achieving successful patterning of electrolyte microscale devices has remained challenging. Here, successful patterning using photolithography is enabled by incorporating caffeine into a UV-crosslinked polyacrylamide hydrogel electrolyte. Caffeine passivates the Zn anode, preventing chemical corrosion, while its coordination with Zn2+ ions forms a Zn2+-conducting complex that transforms into ZnCO3 and 2ZnCO3·3Zn(OH)2 over cycling. The resulting Zn-rich interphase product significantly enhances Zn reversibility. In on-chip microbatteries, the resulting solid-electrolyte interphase allows the Zn||MnO2 full cell to cycle for over 700 cycles with an 80% depth of discharge. Integrating the photolithographable electrolyte into multilayer microfabrication creates a microbattery with a 3D Swiss-roll structure that occupies a footprint of 0.136 mm2. This tiny microbattery retains 75% of its capacity (350 µAh cm-2) for 200 cycles at a remarkable 90% depth of discharge. The findings offer a promising solution for enhancing the performance of Zn microbatteries, particularly for on-chip microscale devices, and have significant implications for the advancement of autonomous microscale devices.

Federated learning (FL) is a decentralized machine learning architecture, which leverages a large number of remote devices to learn a joint model with distributed training data. However, the system-heterogeneity is one major challenge in an FL network to achieve robust distributed learning performance, which comes from two aspects: 1) device-heterogeneity due to the diverse computational capacity among devices and 2) data-heterogeneity due to the nonidentically distributed data across the network. Prior studies addressing the heterogeneous FL issue, for example, FedProx, lack formalization and it remains an open problem. This work first formalizes the system-heterogeneous FL problem and proposes a new algorithm, called federated local gradient approximation (FedLGA), to address this problem by bridging the divergence of local model updates via gradient approximation. To achieve this, FedLGA provides an alternated Hessian estimation method, which only requires extra linear complexity on the aggregator. Theoretically, we show that with a device-heterogeneous ratio ρ , FedLGA achieves convergence rates on non-i.i.d. distributed FL training data for the nonconvex optimization problems with O ([(1+ρ)/√{ENT}] + 1/T) and O ([(1+ρ)√E/√{TK}] + 1/T) for full and partial device participation, respectively, where E is the number of local learning epoch, T is the number of total communication round, N is the total device number, and K is the number of the selected device in one communication round under partially participation scheme. The results of comprehensive experiments on multiple datasets indicate that FedLGA can effectively address the system-heterogeneous problem and outperform current FL methods. Specifically, the performance against the CIFAR-10 dataset shows that, compared with FedAvg, FedLGA improves the model's best testing accuracy from 60.91% to 64.44%.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop and validate a convolutional neural network (CNN) model to distinguish between cervical ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) and multilevel degenerative spinal stenosis using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and to compare the diagnostic ability with spine surgeons. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Some artificial intelligence models have been applied in spinal image analysis and many of promising results were obtained; however, there was still no study attempted to develop a deep learning model in detecting cervical OPLL using MRI images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, 272 cervical OPLL and 412 degenerative patients underwent surgical treatment were enrolled and divided into the training (513 cases) and test dataset (171 cases). CNN models applying ResNet architecture with 34, 50, and 101 layers of residual blocks were constructed and trained with the sagittal MRI images from the training dataset. To evaluate the performance of CNN, the receiver operating characteristic curves of 3 ResNet models were plotted and the area under the curve were calculated on the test dataset. The accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the diagnosis by the CNN were calculated and compared with 3 senior spine surgeons. RESULTS: The diagnostic accuracies of our ResNet34, ResNet50, and ResNet101 models were 92.98%, 95.32%, and 97.66%, respectively; the area under the curve of receiver operating characteristic curves of these models were 0.914, 0.942, and 0.971, respectively. The accuracies and specificities of ResNet50 and ResNet101 models were significantly higher than all spine surgeons; for the sensitivity, ResNet101 model achieved better values than that of the 2 surgeons. CONCLUSION: The performance of our ResNet model in differentiating cervical OPLL from degenerative spinal stenosis using MRI is promising, better results were achieved with more layers of residual blocks applied.

Aim: We present multi-wavelength (MW) analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC) methods offering superior accuracy for adeno-associated virus characterization and quantification. Methods: Experimental design guidelines are presented for MW sedimentation velocity and analytical buoyant density equilibrium AUC. Results: Our results were compared with dual-wavelength AUC, transmission electron microscopy and mass photometry. In contrast to dual-wavelength AUC, MW-AUC correctly quantifies adeno-associated virus capsid ratios and identifies contaminants. In contrast to transmission electron microscopy, partially filled capsids can also be detected and quantified. In contrast to mass photometry, first-principle results are obtained. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates the improved information provided by MW-AUC, highlighting the utility of several recently integrated UltraScan programs, and reinforces AUC as the gold-standard analysis for viral vectors.

Kagome magnet has been found to be a fertile ground for the search of exotic quantum states in condensed matter. Arising from the unusual geometry, the quantum interactions in the kagome lattice give rise to various quantum states, including the Chern-gapped Dirac fermion, Weyl fermion, flat band and van Hove singularity. Here we review recent advances in the study of the R166 kagome magnet (RT6E6, R = rare earths; T = transition metals; and E = Sn, Ge, etc) whose crystal structure highlights the transition-metal-based kagome lattice and rare-earth sublattice. Compared with other kagome magnets, the R166 family owns the particularly strong interplays between thedelectrons on the kagome site and the localizedfelectrons on the rare-earth site. In the form of spin-orbital coupling, exchange interaction and many-body effect, the quantum interactions play an essential role in the Berry curvature in both the reciprocal and real spaces of R166 family. We discuss the spectroscopic and transport visualization of the topological electrons hosted in the Mn kagome layer of RMn6Sn6and the various topological effects due to the quantum interactions, including the Chern-gap opening, the exchange-biased effect, the topological Hall effect and the emergent inductance. We hope this work serves as a guide for future explorations of quantum magnets.

This study proposes a new arrangement-tuning method to maximize the potential of tuned mass dampers (TMDs) in decreasing the seismic responses of tall buildings. The method relies on a Grammian-based entropy index with the physical meaning of covariance responses to white noise without the involvement of external inputs. A twelve-story RC frame-shear wall building was used as an example to illustrate the method. Indices were computed for the building with TMDs placed on different stories and tuning to different modes and were compared with responses to white noise (colored) time histories. Results showed that greater index reduction cases agree well with greater story-drift reductions cases, despite the differences in the time step of the white noises and structural model types (pure shear vs. shear-bending), and the optimal TMD is not necessarily the traditional "roof-1st mode tuning" case. Comparisons were also made for the shear-bending building under seven earthquake excitations. It is found that, though TMDs are not full-band effective controllers, the index-selected TMDs still perform the best in three out of seven earthquakes. So, the proposed internal-property-based entropy index provides a good controller design for large-scale structures under unpredictable none-stationary excitations.

Introduction: Visual spatial attention can be captured by a salient color singleton that is contingent on the target feature. A previous study reported that theta (4-7 Hz) and alpha (8-14 Hz) oscillations were related to contingent attentional capture, but the corresponding attentional mechanisms of these oscillations remain unclear. Methods: In this study, we analyzed the electroencephalogram data of our previous study to investigate the roles of capture-related theta and alpha oscillation activities. Different from the previous study that used color-changed placeholders as irrelevant cues, the present study adopted abrupt onsets of color singleton cues which tend to elicit phase-locked neural activities. In Experiment 1, participants completed a peripheral visual search task in which spatially uninformative color singleton cues were inside the spatial attentional window and a central rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task in which the same cues were outside the spatial attentional window. In Experiment 2, participants completed a color RSVP task and a size RSVP task in which the peripheral color singleton cues were contingent and not contingent on target feature, respectively. Results: In Experiment 1, spatially uninformative color singleton cues elicited lateralized theta activities when they were contingent on target feature, irrespective of whether they were inside or outside the spatial attentional window. In contrast, the same color singleton cues elicited alpha lateralization only when they were inside the spatial attentional window. In Experiment 2, we further found that theta lateralization vanished if the color singleton cues were not contingent on target feature. Discussion: These results suggest distinct roles of theta and alpha oscillations in the process of contingent attentional capture initiated by abrupt onsets of singleton cues. Theta activities may reflect global enhancement of target feature, while alpha activities may be related to attentional engagement to spatially relevant singleton cues. These lateralized neural oscillations, together with the distractor-elicited N2pc component, might consist of multiple stages of attentional processes during contingent attentional capture.

Magnetic skyrmions have garnered considerable attention due to their topological properties and potential applications in information storage. These unique structures can be found in chiral magnets, including well-known compounds like MnSi and FeGe with a B20-type crystal structure. In this study, we utilized Lorentz transmission electron microscopy to investigate the influence of magnetic skyrmions on the Hall effect in FeGe under low magnetic fields. Additionally, we examined the magnetoresistance (MR) and Hall effect of FeGe under a high magnetic field of 28 T. Our findings reveal distinct mechanisms governing the MR at low and high temperatures. Notably, the anomalous Hall effect plays a significant role in the Hall resistivity observed at low magnetic fields. Meanwhile, the contribution of the skyrmion-induced topological Hall signal in the FeGe is ignorable. Furthermore, by employing a two-carrier model and fitting the carrier concentration of FeGe under high magnetic fields, we demonstrate a transition in the dominant carrier type from electrons to holes as the temperature increases. These results contribute to a deeper understanding of the intrinsic magnetic properties of FeGe.

QM protein was previously discovered as a tumor suppressor, and numerous studies have shown that QM protein also played important roles in the immune responses. To investigate the potential roles of the QM protein gene in Eriocheir sinensis, the QM protein gene (designated as EsQM) has been cloned from E. sinensis using the rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) technique. The cDNA of EsQM is 781 bp in length, consisting of a 654 bp open reading frame (ORF), encoding 219 amino acids, a 27 bp 5' untranslated region (UTR) and a 94 bp 3' UTR. The EsQM protein has a calculated molecular weight of 25.4 kDa and a theoretical isoelectric point of 10.10. The deduced protein sequence of EsQM contains a Ribosomal_L16 domain, an SH3-binding motif, an N-acylation site, two putative antibiotic binding sites, two putative protein kinase C phosphorylation sites, and two amidation sites. EsQM is extremely conserved and exhibits more than 85% similarities to previously identified arthropod QM protein genes. By real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) analysis, we found that EsQM mRNA transcripts were detectable in all the examined tissues, with the highest expression in hemocytes. The mRNA expression of EsQM in hemocytes was significantly upregulated after the stimulation of Aeromonas hydrophila or polybrominated diphenyl ether-47 (BDE-47). Moreover, EsQM mRNA expression in hemocytes responded more quickly and lasted longer when stimulated by A.hydrophila than BDE-47. Thus, EsQM can respond to bacterial infection and environmental pollution, and might be involved in the defense mechanism to both biological and non-biological stimulation of arthropods.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco contains carcinogens called tobacco-specific nitrosamines. Among the tobacco-specific nitrosamines, is nicotine-derived nitrosamine ketone (NNK) which produces the metabolite 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL). We aimed to examine the association between urinary tobacco-specific NNAL and cognitive functioning among older adults. METHODS: A total of 1673 older adults aged ≥60 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2014 were included. Urinary tobacco-specific NNAL was analyzed in the laboratory. Cognitive functioning was measured using the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease Word Learning subtest (CERAD-WL) immediate and delayed memory tests, the Animal Fluency test (AFT), and the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST). Test-specific and global cognition z-scores were calculated based on means and standard deviations of the cognitive test scores. Multivariable linear regression models were constructed to examine the independent association between quartiles of urinary tobacco-specific NNAL and cognitive test-specific and global cognition z-scores controlling for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education level, depressive symptoms, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, urinary creatinine, hypertension, diabetes, alcohol use, and smoking status. RESULTS: About half of the participants (mean age 69.8 years) were female (52.1%), non-Hispanic White (48.3%), and completed some college and above (49.7%). Multivariable linear regression results showed that participants in the 4th quartile (highest quartile) of urinary NNAL, compared with those in the 1st quartile (lowest quartile), had lower DSST z-scores (ß= -0.19; 95% CI: -0.34 - -0.04). CONCLUSIONS: Tobacco-specific NNAL was negatively associated with processing speed, sustained attention, and working memory in older adults.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to examine the relationship between seropositivity for toxocariasis and cognitive functioning in a nationally representative sample of US older adults. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. SETTING: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data collection took place in the US at participants' homes and mobile examination centres with specialised equipment. PARTICIPANTS: The study population consisted of 3188 community-dwelling US older adults aged 60 and above from the NHANES 2011 to 2014. OUTCOME MEASURES: IgG antibody against Toxocara spp was tested by a Luminex assay using recombinant rTc-CTL-1 antigen. A value >23.1 mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) indicated positive for toxocariasis and a value ≤23.1 MFI as negative for toxocariasis. The Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease Word Learning subtest immediate and delayed memory, the Animal Fluency test and the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST) were used to assess cognitive functioning. Cognitive test-specific and global cognitive z scores were computed using sample means and SD. RESULTS: The study population consisted of 3188 participants who represented a total of 111 896 309 civilian citizens in the USA. The mean age of the participants was 69.6 years (standard deviation 6.8). The prevalence of toxocariasis in this population was 7.3% (95% confidence interval [CI] 6.1% to 8.5%). The survey-weighted linear regression model showed that compared with participants who were toxocariasis seronegative, those who were seropositive had lower DSST z score (beta [ß] = -0.12, 95% CI -0.22 to -0.01) and global cognition z score (ß=-0.11, 95% CI -0.22 to -0.01), after controlling for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, depressive symptoms, smoking status, body mass index, prevalent coronary heart disease, prevalent stroke, and systolic blood pressure, physical activity, and total cholesterol. CONCLUSIONS: In our study, seropositive toxocariasis was independently and significantly associated with worse working memory, sustained attention, processing speed and global cognition in older adults. If this association is causal, public health measures to prevent human toxocariasis might help protect older adults' cognitive function.

As intelligent microsystems develop, many revolutionary applications, such as the swallowing surgeon proposed by Richard Feynman, are about to evolve. Nonetheless, integrable energy storage satisfying the demand for autonomous operations has emerged as a major obstacle to the deployment of intelligent microsystems. A reason for the lagging development of integrable batteries is the challenge of miniaturization through microfabrication procedures. Lithium batteries, generated by the most successful battery chemistry, are not stable in the air, thus creating major manufacturing challenges. Other cations (Na+ , Mg2+ , Al3+ , K+ ) are still in the early stages of development. In contrast, the superior stability of zinc batteries in the air brings high compatibility to microfabrication protocols and has already demonstrated excellent practicability in full-sized devices. To obtain energy-dense and high-power zinc microbatteries within square-millimeter or smaller footprints, sandwich, pillar, and Swiss-roll configurations are developed. Thin interdigital and fiber microbatteries find their applications being integrated into wearable devices and electronic skin. It is foreseeable that zinc microbatteries will find their way into highly integrated microsystems unlocking their full potential for autonomous operation. This review summarizes the material development, configuration innovation, and application-oriented integration of zinc microbatteries.

Raising older adults' frailty knowledge level and encouraging them to actively engage in the prevention and treatment of frailty is essential to promote healthy aging. This cross-sectional study investigated frailty knowledge level and its influencing factors in community-dwelling older adults in China. A total of 734 older adults were included in the analysis. About half of them misjudged their frailty state (42.50%), and 17.17% obtained frailty knowledge in the community. Those who were female, lived in rural areas, lived alone, had not attended school, had a monthly income <3,000RMB, were at risk for malnutrition, were depressed, and were socially isolated were more likely to have lower frailty knowledge level. Those with advanced age and pre-frailty or frailty stage were more knowledgeable about frailty. The group with the highest proportion of low frailty knowledge level was those who had never attended school or completed primary school and had loose friend ties (98.7%). It is crucial to develop tailored intervention to raise frailty knowledge level in older adults in China.

It is well known that feature search is efficient, whereas conjunction search is usually inefficient. However, prior studies have shown that some conjunction search could become very efficient through perceptual learning, behaving like a traditional feature search. An unanswered question is whether a new feature is learned when an inefficient conjunction search become efficient after extensive training. A popular view is that the trained conjunction has been successfully unitized into a new feature and thus could pop out from neighboring distractors. Here, by using stimulus specificity and transfer of perceptual learning as an approach, we investigate whether a new feature is learned when an initially inefficient conjunction search becomes highly efficient after extensive training. In two experiments, we consistently found that long-term perceptual learning over days could induce an inefficient-to-efficient pattern change in a color-orientation conjunction search. Moreover, the learning effect of the conjunction target could partly transfer to a new target that shared a same color or a same orientation with the trained target. Remarkably, the total amount of the learning effect was approximately equal to the sum of the transfer effects of individual features. Such additive learning pattern could last for at least several months, although the learning of separate features showed different patterns of persistence. These results do not support that the trained conjunction is unitized into a new and inseparable feature after learning. Instead, our findings point to a feature-based attention enhancement mechanism underlying long-term perceptual learning and its persistence of color-orientation conjunction search.

Introduction: The pathophysiology of coronary chronic total occlusion (CTO) has not been fully elucidated. Methods: In the present study, we aimed to investigate the potential plasma biomarkers associated with the pathophysiologic progression of CTO and identify protein dynamics in the plasma of CTO vessels immediately after successful revascularization. We quantitatively analyzed the plasma proteome profiles of controls (CON, n = 10) and patients with CTO pre- and post- percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) (CTO, n = 10) by data-independent acquisition proteomics. We performed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to further confirm the common DEPs in the two-group comparisons (CON vs. CTO and CTO vs. CTO-PCI). Results: A total of 1936 proteins with 69 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were detected in the plasma of patients with CTO through quantitative proteomics analysis. For all these DEPs, gene ontology (GO) analysis and protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis were performed. The results showed that most of the proteins were related to the negative regulation of proteolysis, regulation of peptidase activity, negative regulation of hydrolase activity, humoral immune response, and lipid location. Furthermore, we identified 1927 proteins with 43 DEPs in the plasma of patients with CTO vessels after immediately successful revascularization compared to pre-PCI. GO analysis revealed that the above DEPs were enriched in the biological processes of extracellular structure organization, protein activation cascade, negative regulation of response to external stimulus, plasminogen activation, and fibrinolysis. More importantly, we generated a Venn diagram to identify the common DEPs in the two-group comparisons. Seven proteins, ADH4, CSF1, galectin, LPL, IGF2, IgH, and LGALS1, were found to be dynamically altered in plasma during the pathophysiological progression of CTO vessels and following successful revascularization, moreover, CSF1 and LGALS1 were validated via ELISA. Conclusions: The results of this study reveal a dynamic pattern of the molecular response after CTO vessel immediate reperfusion, and identified seven proteins which would be the potential targets for novel therapeutic strategies to prevent coronary CTO.
