RESUMO

Numerous studies have investigated ionospheric waves, also known as ionospheric disturbances. These disturbances exhibit complex wave patterns similar to those produced by solar, geomagnetic, and meteorological disturbances and human activities within the Earth's atmosphere. The radio wave phase imager described herein measures the power of the ionospheric waves using their phase shift seen in phase images produced by the Long Wavelength Array (LWA) at the New Mexico Observatory, a high-resolution radio camera. Software-defined radio (SDR) was used for processing the data to produce an amplitude image and phase image. The phase image revealed the ionospheric waves, whereas the amplitude image could not see them. From the phase image produced from the carrier wave received at the LWA, the properties of the ionospheric waves have been previously characterized in terms of their energy and wave vector. In this study, their power was measured directly from the phase shift of the strongest set of ionospheric waves. The power of these waves, which originated at Albuquerque, the local major power consumer, was 15.3 W, producing a power density of 0.018 W/m2. The calculated power density that should be generated from the local power generating stations around Albuquerque was also 0.018 W/m2, in agreement with the experimentally measured value. This correspondence shows that the power generated by power stations and being consumed is not lost but captured by the ionosphere.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of mirror therapy (MT) together with taping compared to modified constraint-induced movement therapy (mCIMT) and MT alone on the quality of upper extremity (UE) function, dexterity, and grip strength in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty children with hemiplegic CP ranging in age from 6 to 8 years were enrolled. The participants were randomly distributed into three groups. The three groups underwent the same suggested upper limb (UL) exercise programme for 1h/5 days/week for 12 successive weeks. Group A performed the programme with MT and taping. Group B performed the same programme using mCIMT alone, while group C performed this programme with MT alone. In addition, the three groups underwent a routine physical therapy programme for 1 h. The quality of UE function, dexterity, and grip strength was measured using the Quality of Upper Extremity Skills Test (QUEST), Box and Block Test (BBT), and hand-held dynamometer before and after 12 successive weeks of treatment. RESULTS: After treatment, the measurement of all variables in the three groups showed significant improvements with superior effects seen in group A. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results obtained in this study, MT with taping, mCIMT alone, and MT alone are good supplements to traditional physical therapy programmes in improving the quality of UE function, dexterity, and grip strength in children with hemiplegic CP with more superior effects seen after using MT together with taping.

BACKGROUND: In men undergoing definitive radiation for prostate cancer, it is unclear whether early biochemical response can provide additional prognostic value beyond pre-treatment risk stratification. METHODS: Prostate cancer patients consecutively treated with definitive radiation at our institution by a single provider from 1993 to 2006 and who had an end-of-radiation (EOR) PSA (n=688, median follow-up 11.2 years). We analyzed the association of an EOR PSA level, obtained during the last week of radiation, with survival outcomes. Multivariable-adjusted cox proportional hazards models were constructed to assess associations between a detectable EOR PSA (defined as ⩾0.1 ng ml-1) and biochemical failure-free survival (BFFS), metastasis-free survival (MFS), prostate cancer-specific survival (PCSS) and overall survival (OS). Kaplan-Meier survival curves were constructed, with stratification by EOR PSA. RESULTS: At the end of radiation, the PSA level was undetectable in 30% of patients. Men with a detectable EOR PSA experienced inferior 10-year BFFS (49.7% versus 64.4%, P<0.001), 10-year MFS (84.8% versus 92.0%, P=0.003), 10-year PCSS (94.3% versus 98.2%, P=0.007) and 10-year OS (75.8% versus 82.5%, P=0.01), as compared to men with an undetectable EOR PSA. Among National Comprehensive Care Network (NCCN) intermediate- and high-risk men who were treated with definitive radiation and androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), a detectable EOR PSA was more strongly associated with PCSS than initial NCCN risk level (EOR PSA: HR 5.89, 95% CI 2.37-14.65, P<0.001; NCCN risk level: HR 2.01, 95% CI 0.74-5.42, P=0.168). Main study limitations are retrospective study design and associated biases. CONCLUSIONS: EOR PSA was significantly associated with survival endpoints in men who received treatment with definitive radiation and ADT. Whether the EOR PSA can be used to modulate treatment intensity merits further investigation.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the relationship between PSA testing history and high-risk disease among older men diagnosed with prostate cancer. METHODS: Records from 1993 to 2014 were reviewed for men who underwent radiotherapy for prostate cancer at age 75 years or older. Patients were classified into one of four groups based on PSA-testing history: (1) no PSA testing; (2) incomplete/ineffective PSA testing; (3) PSA testing; or (4) cannot be determined. Outcomes of interest were National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) risk group (that is, low, intermediate or high risk) and biopsy grade at diagnosis. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine the association between PSA testing history and high-risk cancer. RESULTS: PSA-testing history was available in 274 (94.5%) of 290 subjects meeting study criteria. In total, 148 men (54.0%) underwent PSA testing with follow-up biopsy, 72 (26.3%) underwent PSA testing without appropriate follow-up, and 54 men (19.7%) did not undergo PSA testing. Patients who underwent PSA testing were significantly less likely to be diagnosed with NCCN high-risk cancer (23.0% vs 51.6%, P<0.001). On multivariable analysis, men with no/incomplete PSA testing had more than three-fold increased odds of high-risk disease at diagnosis (odds ratio 3.39, 95% confidence interval 1.96-5.87, P<0.001) as compared to the tested population. CONCLUSIONS: Older men who underwent no PSA testing or incomplete testing were significantly more likely to be diagnosed with high-risk prostate cancer than those who were previously screened. It is reasonable to consider screening in healthy older men likely to benefit from early detection and treatment.

BACKGROUND: The use of mobile phones is rapidly increasing all over the world. Few studies deal with the effect of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) on monoamine neurotransmitters in the different brain areas of adult rat. AIM: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of EMR on the concentrations of dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE) and serotonin (5-HT) in the hippocampus, hypothalamus, midbrain and medulla oblongata of adult rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult rats were exposed daily to EMR (frequency 1800 MHz, specific absorption rate 0.843 W/kg, power density 0.02 mW/cm2, modulated at 217 Hz) and sacrificed after 1, 2 and 4 months of daily EMR exposure as well as after stopping EMR for 1 month (after 4 months of daily EMR exposure). Monoamines were determined by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FD) using their native properties. RESULTS: The exposure to EMR resulted in significant changes in DA, NE and 5-HT in the four selected areas of adult rat brain. CONCLUSIONS: The exposure of adult rats to EMR may cause disturbances in monoamine neurotransmitters and this may underlie many of the adverse effects reported after EMR including memory, learning, and stress.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading killer in the United States. Patients with severe CAD and ischemia have worse prognosis. Therefore expansion of biomarker research, to identify at-risk individuals and explain the complex biology between cardiovascular growth factors and atherosclerosis is needed. Neuregulin-1ß (NRG-1ß) is a myocardial stress activated growth and survival factor released from endocardial and endothelial cells. NRG-1ß is essential for cardiovascular development and a regulator of angiogenesis. We postulated that plasma and serum levels of NRG-1ß would vary in relation to CAD severity and the presence of stress-induced ischemia. METHODS: We measured serum and plasma levels of NRG-1ß and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in 60 patients undergoing cardiac catheterization. CAD severity was calculated from angiographic results using a modified Duke jeopardy score. RESULTS: Serum NRG-1ß (sNRG-1ß), plasma NRG-1ß (pNRG-1ß), serum VEGF, and plasma VEGF were detectable in the majority of patients. The pNRG-1ß levels were approximately two-fold higher than sNRG-1ß. Both sNRG-1ß and pNRG-1ß correlated inversely with CAD severity. pNRG-1ß levels were statistically higher in patients with stress-induced ischemia denoted by a positive myocardial perfusion imaging study that correlated with angiographic findings (P=0.02). CONCLUSION: Both sNRG-1ß and pNRG-1ß correlated inversely with angiographic severity of CAD. pNRG-1ß levels were two-fold higher than serum and were higher in patients with stress-induced ischemia. Therefore we conclude that plasma is the optimal source for the further exploration of the biological significance of NRG-1ß as a biomarker of CAD severity and ischemia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Mobile phone radiation and health concerns have been raised, especially following the enormous increase in the use of wireless mobile telephony throughout the world. The present study aims to investigate the effect of one hour daily exposure to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) with frequency of 900 Mz (SAR 1.165 w/kg, power density 0.02 mW/cm2) on the levels of amino acid neurotransmitters in the midbrain, cerebellum and medulla of adult and young male albino rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult and young rats were divided into two main groups (treated and control). The treated group of both adult and young rats was exposed to EMR for 1 hour daily. The other group of both adult and young animals was served as control. The determination of amino acid levels was carried out after 1 hour, 1 month, 2 months and 4 months of EMR exposure as well as after stopping radiation. RESULTS: Data of the present study showed a significant increase in both excitatory and inhibitory amino acids in the cerebellum of adult and young rats and midbrain of adult animals after 1 hour of EMR exposure. In the midbrain of adult animals, there was a significant increase in glycine level after 1 month followed by significant increase in GABA after 4 months. Young rats showed significant decreases in the midbrain excitatory amino acids. In the medulla, the equilibrium ratio percent (ER%) calculations showed a state of neurochemical inhibition after 4 months in case of adult animals, whereas in young animals, the neurochemical inhibitory state was observed after 1 month of exposure due to significant decrease in glutamate and aspartate levels. This state was converted to excitation after 4 months due to the increase in glutamate level. CONCLUSION: The present changes in amino acid concentrations may underlie the reported adverse effects of using mobile phones.

Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are mobilized into the vascular space and home to damaged tissues, where they promote repair in part through a process of angiogenesis. Neuregulins (NRGs) are ligands in the epidermal growth factor family that signal through type I receptor tyrosine kinases in the erbB family (erbB2, erbB3, and erbB4) and regulate endothelial cell biology, promoting angiogenesis. Stimuli such as ischemia and exercise that promote EPC mobilization also induce cleavage and release of transmembrane NRG from cardiac microvascular endothelial cells (CMECs). We hypothesized that NRG/erbB signaling may regulate EPC biology. Using an embryonic (e)EPC cell line that homes to and repairs injured myocardium, we were able to detect erbB2 and erbB3 transcripts. Identical receptor expression was found in EPCs isolated from rat bone marrow and human whole blood. NRG treatment of eEPCs induces phosphorylation of kinases including Akt, GSK-3ß, and Erk1/2 and the nuclear accumulation and transcriptional activation of ß-catenin. NRG does not induce eEPC proliferation or migration but does protect eEPCs against serum deprivation-induced apoptosis. These results suggest a role for tissue-derived NRG in the regulation of EPC survival.

BACKGROUND: Neuregulin-1 (NRG-1) is a paracrine factor released by microvascular endothelial cells that has cardioprotective effects in animal models of heart failure. However, circulating NRG-1 has not been studied in human heart disease. We used a novel immunoassay to test whether circulating NRG-1beta is associated with disease severity and clinical outcomes in chronic heart failure. METHODS AND RESULTS: Serum NRG-1beta was quantified in 899 outpatients in the Penn Heart Failure Study, a referral cohort representing a broad spectrum of systolic heart failure. Circulating NRG-1beta was significantly elevated in patients with worse disease severity (median, 6.2 ng/mL for New York Heart Association class IV versus 4.4 ng/mL for class I; P=0.002). In adjusted models, NRG-1beta was independently associated with an increased risk of death or cardiac transplantation over a median follow-up of 2.4 years (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.58; 95% confidence interval, 1.04 to 2.39; P=0.03 comparing fourth versus first NRG-1beta quartile). Associations with outcome differed by heart failure cause and symptom severity, with the strongest associations observed in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy (interaction P=0.008) and New York Heart Association class III/IV symptoms (interaction P=0.01). These findings were all independent of brain natriuretic peptide, and assessment of NRG-1beta and brain natriuretic peptide jointly provided better risk stratification than each biomarker individually in patients with ischemic or New York Heart Association class III/IV heart failure. CONCLUSIONS: Circulating NRG-1beta is independently associated with heart failure severity and risk of death or cardiac transplantation. These findings support a role for NRG-1/ErbB signaling in human heart failure and identify serum NRG-1beta as a novel biomarker that may have clinical applications.

Measurements have been made to determine the solubilities of a number of gases in aqueous solutions of commercially available polyethoxylated octyl phenols at temperatures ranging from 25°C to 45°C (298-318 K). The solubilities determined for each gas increase linearly with surfactant concentration. The intramicellar gas solubilities derived from these data are found to be relatively insensitive to temperature and sodium chloride in the external aqueous phase. When analyzed in terms of surfactant composition, the intramicellar gas solubilities are found to depend solely on the octyl phenol content of each surfactant. This suggests that the ethylene oxide chains of the micellized surfactant molecules do not contribute directly to the solubilization process, even under conditions near the cloud point. Effects of tranquilizing agents on neurotransmitters in the heart have not been widely studied. Thus, the effect of intraperitoneal injection of reserpine, (2.5 mg/kg bw) on the concentrations of excitatory (glutamic acid, glutamine, aspartic acid, asparagine), inhibitory (GABA, glycine, alanine, taurine), neurotransmitters as well as the enzymes (GOT and GPT) and total protein were measured in both heart and serum chicks at different ages (1, 7, 30, 90 and 180 days). Reserpine induced a decrease in the excitatory amino acids and an increase in GABA in both heart and serum in most ages. Glycine and alanine increased in the heart and decreased in serum. Taurine increased in the heart of young ages (1 and 7 days) and decreased in older ones (90 and 180 days), however, it decreased in serum of most ages. Both GOT and GPT increased in heart but, in serum, GOT increased and GPT decreased in most ages. Total protein increased in the heart of young chicks and decreased in the 90- and 180-day-old chicks. In conclusion, reserpine induced a parallel decrease in the ratio glutamate, glutamine, aspartate/GABA in both myocardial tissue and serum of the different age groups. Changes observed in neurotransmitters of the heart suggest that these amino acids may play a similar role in the myocardial tissue, as is described in the central nervous system.

Preliminary phytochemical screening of the plant Thymus capitatus exhibited the presence of saponins, resins, flavonoids, essential and fixed oils. Aqueous and ethanolic extracts (10-200 mg/ml) as well as saponin, resin and essential oil of the plant (10-5000 micrograms/ml inhibited the growth of several bacteria and fungi.
