RESUMO

Pyroptosis can be triggered through both canonical and non-canonical inflammasome pathways, involving the cleavage of gasdermin (GSDM) protein family members, like GSDMD and GSDME. The impact of pyroptosis on tumors is nuanced, because its role in regulating cancer progression and anti-tumor immunity may vary depending on the tumor type, stage, location, and immune status. However, pyroptosis cannot be simply categorized as promoting or inhibiting tumors based solely on whether it is acute or chronic in nature. The interplay between pyroptosis and cancer is intricate, with some evidence suggesting that chronic pyroptosis may facilitate tumor growth, while the acute induction of pyroptosis could stimulate anti-cancer immune responses. Tumor hypoxia activates hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) signaling to modulate pyroptosis and immune checkpoint expression. Targeting this hypoxia-pyroptosis-immune escape axis could be a promising therapeutic strategy. This review highlights the complex crosstalk between hypoxia, pyroptosis, and immune evasion in the TME.

RESUMO

Numerous natural compounds have been identified that are able to induce apoptosis in cancer cells. These compounds have various chemical properties and are found in medicinal plants, vegetables, and fruits that are commonly consumed by humans. Phenols represent important compounds, which have been demonstrated to induce apoptosis in cancer cells, and some of the involved mechanisms have also been determined. The most important and abundant phenolic compounds are tannins, caffeic acid, capsaicin, gallic acid, resveratrol, and curcumin. Induction of apoptosis with the least or no toxicity to natural tissues is one of the useful effects of many plant-based bioactive compounds. Phenols, with anticancer potency at different degrees, serve to induce apoptosis through different pathways, including both extrinsic (Fas) and intrinsic (calcium release, ROS increase, DNA degradation, and mitochondrial membrane impairment). In this review, we report these compounds and their apoptosis-inducing mechanisms. Apoptosis or programmed cell death is a precise and systematic mechanism that is aimed at removing damaged or abnormal cells and is very useful to control, treat, and prevent cancer. Apoptotic cells are characterized by specific morphological features and molecular expression. In addition to physiological stimuli, there are many external factors that can be useful for inducing apoptosis. Also, these compounds can affect the regulatory proteins of the apoptotic pathways, such as the apoptotic proteins (Bid and BAX) and antiapoptotic proteins (Bcl-2). Taking these compounds and their molecular mechanisms into account can help use them in combination with chemical drugs and develop new drugs.

RESUMO

Despite various individual studies on the quality of life (QOL) in patients with CHF, a comprehensive study has not yet been conducted; therefore, this study aims to assess the QOL of CHF patients. In the present systematic review and meta-analysis, PubMed, Scopus, and the Web of science databases were searched from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2018, using QOL and heart failure as keywords. The searches, screenings, quality assessments, and data extractions were conducted separately by two researchers. A total of 70 studies including 25,180 participants entered the final stage. The mean QOL score was 44.1 (95% confidence interval (CI) 40.6, 47.5; I2 = 99.3%) using a specific random effects method in 40 studies carried out on 12,520 patients. Moreover, according to the geographical region, heart failure patients in the Americas had higher scores. In 14 studies, in which a general SF-36 survey was implemented, the average physical component score (PCS) and mental component score (MCS) were 33.3 (95% CI 31.9, 34.7; I2 = 88.0%) and 50.6 (95% CI 43.8, 57.4; I2 = 99.3%), respectively. The general and specific tools used in this study indicated moderate and poor QOL, respectively. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out periodic QOL measurements using appropriate tools as part of the general care of CHF patients.

RESUMO

Introduction Brain death (BD) is the irreversible termination of the functioning of the brain. The diagnosis should be first made by clinical criteria and confirmed by using paraclinical confirmatory techniques (ancillary tests). While conventional brain angiography remains the standard method of choice, computed tomography angiography (CTA) has emerged as an alternative method. In this study, we tried to evaluate the accuracy of CTA for the diagnosis of BD. Methods In this study, we included nine patients with a clinical diagnosis of BD, confirmed by electroencephalography (EEG). CTA was then performed to compare the results. Results The most frequent cause for BD was multiple trauma (7/9) in our patients, followed by aneurysm rupture and brain infarct. CTA examination in all patients showed opacification of extracranial arteries and major branches of external carotid artery (ECA), including superficial temporal arteries (STAs), while no opacification was observed in the internal carotid arteries (ICA) including and beyond the cavernous segment, middle cerebral arteries (MCAs), anterior cerebral arteries (ACAs), distal vertebral arteries (VAs), and basilar artery (BA). Moreover, no opacification was observed in the internal cerebral veins (ICVs) or great cerebral vein (GCV). Conclusion The accuracy rate of CTA in the detection of intracranial circulatory arrest was 100%. CTA examinations confirmed BD diagnoses in all patients who had clinical and EEG BD diagnoses, and no confliction between CTA findings and clinical diagnoses was observed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most common disorder caused by bacterial agents in pregnancy, which can lead to important complications in newborn of such mothers in case of inappropriate diagnosis and treatment. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to study the prevalence of UTI among pregnant women and its complications in their newborns during the birth in the hospitals of Dezful City, Iran, during 2012 - 2013. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional retrospective study, 1132 women admitted to Dr. Ganjavian and Ayatollah Nabavi Hospitals in Dezful City, Iran, during 2012 - 2013 were randomly allocated into the case and control groups and were matched based on their age, numbers of pregnancy, sex and diseases of their children. UTI was the only difference between the two groups. RESULTS: Twenty-two thousand six hundred deliveries occurred within the course of this study. Due to UTI, 5% of deliveries led to hospitalization of mothers (1132 patients).Weight and height of newborn infants of mothers afflicted with UTI (P < 0.001) were significantly lower compared to newborns of healthy women (P < 0.001). There was a significant association between the two groups of pregnant women with UTI in terms of type of delivery (normal and caesarean section) (P < 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: The lower incidence of UTI in pregnant women compared to other areas of Iran represents the role of climate and weather in the prevalence of UTI. In addition, the increased number of low-birth-weight infants had a remarkable correlation with UTI, which can influence the health of the next generation.
