RESUMO

Diffusion studies of adsorbates moving on a surface are often analyzed using 2D Langevin simulations. These simulations are computationally cheap and offer valuable insight into the dynamics, however, they simplify the complex interactions between the substrate and adsorbate atoms, neglecting correlations in the motion of the two species. The effect of this simplification on the accuracy of observables extracted using Langevin simulations was previously unquantified. Here we report a numerical study aimed at assessing the validity of this approach. We compared experimentally accessible observables which were calculated using a Langevin simulation with those obtained from explicit molecular dynamics simulations. Our results show that within the range of parameters we explored Langevin simulations provide a good alternative for calculating the diffusion procress, i.e. the effect of correlations is too small to be observed within the numerical accuracy of this study and most likely would not have a significant effect on the interpretation of experimental data. Our comparison of the two numerical approaches also demonstrates the effect temperature dependent friction has on the calculated observables, illustrating the importance of accounting for such a temperature dependence when interpreting experimental data.

RESUMO

The nonlinear optical signals from an open system consisting of a molecule connected to metallic leads, in response to a sequence of impulsive pulses, are calculated using a superoperator formalism. Two detection schemes are considered: coherent stimulated emission and incoherent fluorescence. The two provide similar but not identical information. The necessary superoperator correlation functions are evaluated either by converting them to ordinary (Hilbert space) operators which are then expanded in many-body states, or by using Wick's theorem for superoperators to factorize them into nonequilibrium two point Green's functions. As an example we discuss a stimulated Raman process that shows resonances involving two different charge states of the molecule in the same signal.

RESUMO

During a period of fifteen years, 9 children and 5 adults with a variety of urachal anomalies were treated. Infected urachal cysts were more common in children whereas adults more frequently had infected urachal sinuses. After careful physical examination, a preoperative diagnosis could be made in most patients, with ultrasound examination decisive in doubtful cases. Whenever feasible, complete excision of the umbilicovesical tract is performed, but in very ill patients, a staged treatment becomes necessary. The preoperative injection of methylene blue is helpful in the identification of communicating tracts, all of which should be removed. All affected children should undergo investigation for associated genitourinary anomalies.
