RESUMO

Dementia often leads to behavior changes such as deficits in communication and social interaction; one effective antecedent strategy for improving communication involves rearranged or supplemental stimuli. In the present study, researchers placed individualized textual prompts on the dinner table of three women at an assisted-living facility. Textual stimuli included prompts such as "Debbie, ask Pat where she liked to travel," and led to increases in conversation duration. The results suggest that antecedent interventions can improve social interactions for individuals with dementia with minimal involvement of caregivers.Textual prompts may improve social communication between individuals with dementia.Salient stimuli, such as participants' names, may be necessary to facilitate conversation.The textual intervention requires minimal training and response effort from caregivers and care staff.Improvements in conversation duration maintained at 6 months post-study.

RESUMO

We evaluated a method for teaching children with autism spectrum disorder to respond to tactile stimulation of multiple body parts. Various objects (e.g., hairbrush) produced the sensations (e.g., prickly). In a multiple baseline design across participants, participants learned 9 sensation body part tacts and the evaluation concluded with tests of generalization to 3 novel body parts, 6 novel objects, and 3 novel sensations. Participants demonstrated generalization to novel objects, and to a lesser extent, novel body parts, but did not generalize tacts to novel sensations. These findings are discussed in terms of implications for teaching children with autism to tact sensations.

RESUMO

Engaging patients in shared decision making (SDM) is a professional requirement since the Montgomery ruling in 2015. Endodontic treatments present a specific challenge to achieving SDM, both for the clinician and the patient. The treatments are often perceived as more challenging to complete by the clinician, and the assessment of risk and likely outcome requires a deep understanding of the (limited) evidence base. For the patient, decisions can be required at a time of acute symptoms and prolonged treatments. There are health literacy demands in comparison to some less complex dental treatments. Treatment decisions may be based more on inherent biases and prior experiences than objective probabilities. This article discusses options and supports effective shared decision making in endodontic treatment.

Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) typically exhibit a range of social communication deficits. Presequenced stimulus arrangements, such as matrix training, can be used to facilitate generative responding. Accordingly, training procedures can lead to the acquisition of a greater number of targets that are not taught explicitly, with fewer learning trials. Matrix training provides a useful framework for selecting teaching targets to promote the emergence of untaught skills. Participants were 3 young boys diagnosed with ASD, who were taught noun-verb combinations of play actions as tact and listener responses. All participants learned the taught noun-verb targets and showed varying degrees of recombinative generalization to untaught targets. Across subsequent matrices, the rate of acquisition of new targets and the number acquired without direct teaching increased (i.e., recombinative generalization). This suggests matrix training stimulus arrangements can facilitate the acquisition of novel targets by teaching young children with ASD to recombine language components appropriately.
