RESUMO

The chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has become a disease of public health importance. Among the various risk factors, smoking remains the main culprit. In addition to airway obstruction, the presence of intrinsic positive end expiratory pressure, respiratory muscle dysfunction contributes to the symptoms of the patient. Perioperative management of these patients includes identification of modifiable risk factors and their optimisation. Use of regional anaesthesia alone or in combination with general anaesthesia improves pulmonary functions and reduces the incidence of post-operative pulmonary complications.

RESUMO

Wheat flour fractioned by sieving into four different particle size fractions namely finer fractions (<75 and 75-118 µm), coarser fractions (118-150 and >150 µm) were analyzed for their chemical, rheological, bread & parotta making characteristics. The finer fractions had lower ash, higher dry gluten, damaged starch and sodium dodecysulphate (SDS)-sedimentation value than the coarser fractions. The flour from finer fractions gave bread with best sensory and textural attributes. The parottas from finer fractions showed significantly higher sensory scores for colour, texture, layers, mouthfeel and overall quality score than the coarser fractions. In the micrograph of finer flour fractions, higher number of loosened single starch granules than the aggregates of starch and protein matrix were seen as compared to coarser fractions. These studies indicate that the flour from the finer fractions produce higher quality bread, parotta owing to the presence of higher damaged starch content, quantity and quality of protein in these fractions than coarser fractions.

RESUMO

A small group of people belonging to a certain religion, called Jehovah's witness do not accept blood transfusion or blood products, based on biblical readings. When such group of people are in need of health care, their faith and belief is an obstacle for their proper treatment, and poses legal, ethical and medical challenges for attending health care provider. Due to the rapid growth in the membership of this group worldwide, physicians attending hospitals should be prepared to manage such patients. Appropriate management of such patients entails understanding of ethical and legal issues involved, providing meticulous medical management, use of prohaemostatic agents, essential interventions and techniques to reduce blood loss and hence, reduce the risk of subsequent need for blood transfusion. An extensive literature search was performed using search engines such as Google scholar, PubMed, MEDLINE, science journals and textbooks using keywords like 'Jehovah's witness', 'blood haemodilution', 'blood salvage' and 'blood substitutes'.

RESUMO

Bran dusters are used in the wheat flour milling process to increase flour extraction rate. Chemical, rheological and bread characteristics of bran duster flours (BDR1, BDR2, BDR3) and straight run flour (SRF) obtained from two commercial roller flour mills were analyzed. Important chemical characteristics such as ash, dry gluten content, sedimentation value, damaged starch and falling number of bran duster flours were determined. Rheological behavior was tested using farinograph and alveograph equipments. The results showed an increase in ash, dry gluten content and Zeleny's sedimentation value for bran duster flours compared to SRF. Rheological characteristics indicated higher farinograph dough development time and stability values for bran duster flours. Alveograph characteristics indicated higher extensibility and lower elasticity values for bran duster flours. Over all quality score of bread for BDR1 from A and B roller flour mills ranged from 73.4 to 74.7, BDR2 (79-81.8), BDR3 (69-70.4) as against SRF (85.4-86.3).

RESUMO

Flaxseed is a versatile functional ingredient owing to its unique nutrient profile. Studies on the effect of substitution of roasted and ground flaxseed (RGF) at 5, 10, 15 and 20% level on the wheat flour dough properties showed that amylograph peak viscosity, farinograph dough stability, extensograph resistance to extension and extensibility values decreased with the increase in the substitution of RGF from 0-20%. The cookie baking test showed a marginal decrease in spread ratio but beyond substitution of 15% RGF the texture and flavour of the cookies was adversely affected. The data on storage characteristics of control and cookies with 15% RGF showed no significant change with respect to acidity of extracted fat and peroxide values due to storage of cookies upto 90 days in metallised polyester pouches at ambient conditions. The gas chromatographic analysis of fatty acid profile indicated that the control cookies contained negligible linolenic acid and the flaxseed cookies contained 4.75 to 5.31% of linolenic acid which showed a marginal decrease over storage. Hence flaxseed could be used as a source of omega-3-fatty acid.

RESUMO

Abyssinones and related flavonoids were screened against 3 enzymes (3betaHSD, 17betaHSD and Aromatase) of steroidogenesis pathway. The virtual screening experiment shows high affinity for flavonones than their respective chalcones. A 4' -OH blocked prenylated flavonone 2b (2-(2', 2'-dimethyl chroman-6'-yl)-7-hydroxy chroman-4-one) had consistent binding affinity to all the three enzymes used in this study showing higher binding affinity to aromatase. A good correlation was observed between cytotoxic data (MCF-7, breast cancer cell line) and docking results indicating flavonone as a better steroidogenesis modulator in hormone dependent cancer.

RESUMO

The structure of Escherichia coli chaperonin GroEL was studied using various experimental tools. Such studies produced information about its structure with increasing details. Moreover, remarkable advances in experimental methods provided a step forward in understanding the reaction cycle involved in GroEL-mediated protein folding. In the current review we summarize recent progress, focus on the structure of GroEL and understand the mechanism involved in GroEL-mediated protein folding. This review is divided into the following sections: (i) Section 1 provides basic understanding on protein folding, (ii) Section 2 not only describes various tools used to elucidate the structural aspects of GroEL but also provides details about its structure with particular emphasis, (iii) Section 3 describes allosteric transitions and the reaction cycle involved in GroEL-mediated protein folding, (iv) Section 4 explains iterative annealing and smoothing of the energy landscape model and finally (v) Section 5 discusses applications and recent progress.

RESUMO

Isonicotinoylhydrazones were synthesized from a natural product anacardic acid, a major constituent of cashew nut shell liquid. The unsaturated side chain in anacardic acid and its 5-nitro derivative were converted into C(8')-aldehydes by oxidative cleavage. C(8')-aldehydes are then coupled with isoniazid (an anti-TB drug) to obtain N-isonicotinoyl-N'-8-[(2'-carbohydroxy-3'-hydroxy) phenyl] octanal hydrazone (5) and N-isonicotinoyl-N'-8-[(2'-carbohydroxy-3'-hydroxy-6-nitro) phenyl] octanal hydrazone (6). These isonicotinoylhydrazones of anacardic aldehydes showed potent antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium smegmatis mc(2)155. The synergistic studies of 5 and 6 with isoniazid showed more inhibitory activities than isoniazid alone. Compounds 5 and 6 also showed activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H(37)Rv.

RESUMO

Culture of the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii as an alternative to penaeid shrimp has recently increased in coastal areas of southern India in order to avoid numerous problems, particularly with white spot syndrome virus (WSSV). However, M. rosenbergii culture is now threatened by a new disease, appendage deformity syndrome (ADS), that also results in high mortality. Analysis of ADS prawns for viruses such as WSSV, monodon baculovirus (MBV) and infectious hypodermal and hematopoeitic necrosis virus (IHHNV) gave negative results. ADS prawns were also negative for bacterial pathogens and affected animals did not respond to antibiotic therapy. A study of potential nutritional deficiency revealed that carotenoid supplementation in the diet led to a significant decrease in ADS prawns.

RESUMO

Determination of blood glucose levels is very important to know the physiological condition of the human beings as the hormonal imbalance may cause abnormalities in glucose metabolism. The traditional methods of glucose estimation by colorimetric and titrimetric methods were involved with huge expenditure and time. The modified colorimetric microwell reader method proposed in the present study was performed with small quantities of sample and reagents with the same linearity that was observed in the normal colorimetric analysis. The modified method not only reduces the cost of the test to almost one third of the normal colorimetric method but also provide an opportunity to screen the large number of samples in a short duration of time.

RESUMO

Osteoporosis is characterized by decreased bone mineral density and mechanistic imbalances of bone tissue that may result in reduced skeletal strength and an enhanced susceptibility to fractures. Osteoporosis in its most common form affects the elderly (both sexes) and all racial groups of human beings. Multiple environmental risk factors like acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) are believed to be one of the causes of osteoporosis. Recently a high incidence of osteoporosis has been observed in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected individuals. The etiology of this occurrence in HIV infections is controversial. This problem seems to be more frequent in patients receiving potent antiretroviral therapy. In AIDS, the main suggested risk factors for the development of osteoporosis are use of protease inhibitors, longer duration of HIV infection, lower body weight before antiretroviral therapy, high viral load. Variations in serum parameters like osteocalcin, c-telopeptide, levels of elements like Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, concentration of vitamin-D metabolites, lactate levels, bicarbonate concentrations, amount of alkaline phosphatase are demonstrated in the course of development of osteoporosis. OPG/RANKL/RANK system is final mediator of bone remodeling. Bone mineral density (BMD) test is of added value to assess the risk of osteoporosis in patients infected with AIDS. The biochemical markers also aid in this assessment. Clinical management mostly follows the lines of treatment of osteoporosis and osteopenia.

RESUMO

A survey for scabies was conducted in 14 primary-and 2 high schools of one rural block of Dakshina Kannada district on the west coast of Karnatak from November 1982 to March 1983. A total of 5,128 (84.9%) out of the 6,041 registered children were examined. Prevalence of scabies among children aged 6 to 15 years was 8.2%, prevalence was higher among boys than girls; higher among children of backward communities than those of other communities- and higher among Muslims than among Hindus. History of another case of scabies at home was found in 37.37o of the cases.Secondary pyoderma was observed in 16.59'o of the, cases. Distribution of Lesions conformed to the pattern described in other studies. Results of follow-up after 3-5 weeks of treatment with 25% benzyl benzoate are also reported.
